WWW.VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News PREMIUM ›› VOL. 88 ›› JANUARY 2007 McGowan’s Musings: Well here we are in the year of James Bond - 007, licensed to – what? Improve, be happier, clean up the mess in Iraq and elsewhere, or thrill even?! Let’s see shall we, but whatever happens Happy New Year to you all. I’m writing this on a train to Groningen on my way to Noorderslag/Eurosonic, a fine event of which you will hear more further on in this Newsletter. Anyway I thought it was only us Brits that had slow running overcrowded trains – apparently not! It could be the weather though, on the flight into Amsterdam the winds took us – just after the serving of drinks– the mayhem of spilling and splashing of beverages was not particularly calmed by the matter tasteless) BA coffee! I hope she’s managed to resume her tap dancing career! Anyway I digress, and here I am on the train back from Groningen, the sun is shining and the Dutch countryside is picturesque and very – flat! Manfred Tari will give you the full report of this year’s very successful event, as I was more concerned with the presentation of two panels. In the first we continued the adventures of The Hypotheticals, our imaginary (for now!) European band striving for stardom. The roles of manager, record company, agent, promot- What’s the betting that with The Rolling Stones off the road the top grossing box office figures will feature two, not quite so old, but definitely vintage names, with Genesis, and now it appears The Police back on the road – now just who else can we think of that may jump – or in some cases, be helped, onto the reformation bandwagon? Suggestions on a postcard please! Allan McGowan er and financial advisor were humorously and more than impressively acted out by Frank Ströbele, Marcel Albers, Tobbe Lorentz, Christophe (Doudou) Davy and Dick Molenaar. There is now much interest in the career of The Hypotheticals and who knows what successes await them in 2007! Laughter was also a mainstay of the second session, ‘Off the Record with a Smile’, this was more of a chat show, and I had the privilege of asking Tapio Korjus, Claudio Trotta and Dan de Vita to present on the road anecdotes from their long careers. An hour was not enough for both those on stage and off, hilarious, sometimes scary and often dangerous stories flowed, and the session could well have run on and on – still there’s always next year! Since the last Newsletter, we have lost another legend with the unexpected death of James Brown; I think it’ll be a long time till we see a live performer quite like him again, RIP. On Sunday the VIP team will be seeking some blue sky in Cannes, South of France for the longest established international music trade market MIDEM. The event will be focussing much more on the live business than ever before and VIP News will be directly involved as media partners for the event. We will report on the goings on in the next issue. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, have a great year, and for the first time in 2007 – here is the news! The VIP-Booking European Live Entertainment Book Advertising in the VIP Book will make you visible to 10.000 business professionals all over Europe. In Europe we’re not too good on compiling statistics from the live industry, and perhaps this is something that we should concern ourselves with this year. However it is worth paying attention to the following from the US and the UK, although these concern themselves with the recording industry they do of course have a bearing and influence on the live industry. 2006: U.S. album sales continued to decrease, and were down nearly 5 percent from the previous year, but due to a huge increase in digital downloads, total music sales increased According to year-end sales figures released by Nielsen SoundScan, 588.2 million albums were sold in 2006 - a 4.9 percent decline from 2005. Digital sales were up 65 percent over the previous year, with582 million tracks sold, and digital album sales more than doubled, with nearly 33 million sold last year. COLOPHON ›› VIP-News is published by: VIP-Booking 26 York Street London W1U 6pZ Managing Director: Ronni Didriksen [email protected] New music had a great year in the UK, according to a BPI press release; with fourteen UK debut albums reaching the Top 100 and home-grown acts claiming a 61.9% share of best-selling albums, the best performance since 1997.The biggest-selling album of 2006 was Snow Patrol’s Eyes Open, which sold more than 1.5m copies. Another four UK acts sold over 1m copies of their albums - Take That, Arctic Monkeys, Kooks and Razorlight - and seven of theTop 10 albums of the year were by British acts. New acts coming through included singer-songwriters such as Paolo Nutini and James Morrison, rock acts Arctic Monkeys and The Fratellis and soul from Corinne Bailey Rae. The Arctic Monkeys’ Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not holds the record for the fastest selling debut album of all time, with 363,812 sales in the first seven days of its release. It went on to be the best selling debut of the year. The Kooks’ and hit singles Naive and She Moves In Her Own Way backed up by extensive touring helped their album Inside In/Inside Out into second place on the debut chart. The beginnings of the digital albums market saw 2.2m units sold between April and December 2006; digital sales now comprise 1.4% of the overall album market. Two UK-signed acts featured in the American year end Top 10 singles chart; James Blunt’s ‘You’re Beautiful’ at number four and Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten was at number six. Blunt appeared in the album charts also, where he joined fellow new UK acts KT Tunstall and Corinne Bailey Rae with debut platinum album success. This year has not kicked off too well though. EMI have sacked their top management and are desperately trying to regroup in the face of declining returns, HMV has reported losses and sacked its MD and Music Zone has gone into administration. Sales for December ’06 into January ’07, normally a peak sales period were not good in the UK and there is speculation that the decline of the CD will give retail more problems over the year. the Mean Fiddler in London last summer. Singer and bassist Joe Murphy told the BBC News website it was all down to their manager and “awesome” fans.” Without them we would not have done it,” he said.” Just four days ago nobody had heard of us, now it seems like everyone has. I can’t get my head around it.” The band has since been contacted by a number of big record labels, so look out for the name this year! But the year could not have started off any better for one as yet unsigned band, who have been together for seven years in various forms, Koopa, from Colchester in the UK have made chart history by becoming the first unsigned band to land a UK top 40 hit. A change to Chart rules was instigated at the start of the and digital single sales now count towards a chart position even if there is no CD version, as a result their download-only single Blag, Steal & Borrow debuted at number 31. Koopa have built up a fanbase on the internet and, I’m glad to see, on the live circuit. having played almost 500 gigs in the past three years, including a headline show at Koopa Guitar Sales Boom in the UK Allan McGowan [email protected] According to figures released by the Music Industries Association, the era of the DJ in Britain at least may be coming to a close if the continuing boom in guitar sales is anything to judge by. Sales to young people, and it seems their parents who are having another attempt at the instrument of the guitar heroes of their youth, are booming. to £150. The guitar is now the most popular instrument to learn in school, inspired by a wave of guitar bands such as Arctic Monkeys and The Kooks. Nearly a million guitars were sold in 2006, 470,000 electric and bass guitars and 520,000 acoustic instruments. This is twice the number sold in 1999 and the value of guitar sales is now put at £110 million. A drop in price of 25 per cent over the past two years has encouraged sales by lowering the average cost of an electric guitar Guitar sales boom 3 VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 WOMEX Director Steps Down Allan McGowan [email protected] The 2007 edition of WOMEX will take place from 24-28 Oct 07 in Seville, Spain, but this year there will be a different pair of hands directing the team responsible for this leading worldwide music expo and global market event, which covers world music, folk, roots, traditional and future sounds. Having taken over from founding Director Ben Mandelson in 1997, Christoph Borkowsky Akbar is stepping down as day-to-day director of WOMEX. Gerald Seligman will assume the new role of WOMEX General Director. While he will still maintain close contact with the team in an advisory role, Christoph felt that it was time to devote more attention to his other activities. Christoph told VIP News, “When I became WOMEX director in 1997 I committed myself for 7 years. It became 3 years more because we were waiting for the right successor to take over. Now I will have hopefully more of the time i need for my 2 other companies, Piranha Records and Piranha Events, my family and some new adventures too. Particularly Piranha Events looks very challenging with more events outside of Berlin in the pipeline, organising and programming in connection with the German leadership in the European union, the Olympic games in Peking and the next soccer world championship in South Africa are very promising aims indeed.” This year the WOMEX offspring project PORTO MUSICAL will take place from Christoph Borkowsky 4 VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 7 - 11 February in Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil, and will be joining forces with the Brazilian Ministry of Culture under Gilberto Gil. Hugely expanded, this one-off partnership will be held under the name Feira Música Brasil. Extended projects like this and others have meant that the overall conditions for WOMEX have become much more complex . Christoph continues, “Each football team needs a new coach from time to time, WOMEX as well. I’m most happy that Gerald is taking over. He’s got the right skills, experience -- and respect in the community that the job requires. But I think he is in for a much harder ride than I had a decade ago. Both the whole operation itself as well as the surrounding field for WOMEX are more challenging now.” Gerald Seligman came to WOMEX in January 2006 after over 20 years in the music business. He began his career as a journalist and radio programmer based in New York, before turning to freelance production. After moving to Brazil in 1990, he worked first for Polygram (now Universal), then EMI, which soon moved him to London to take over international direction of its 43-country strategic marketing division. While there he created Hemisphere, the well-respected world music label that saw over 2 million sales during his tenure. As a Grammy-nominated producer and compiler, he has delivered over 120 CDs and is a frequent international conference speaker and consultant. Gerald says, “A new director brings new ideas, of course, but he should always tread carefully,” he says. WOMEX grew from 250 to 2,500 delegates in only a dozen years. It’s remarkable how much foresight Christoph and Ben had when they developed the overall WOMEX philosophy and structure, amazing how durable it was. But a new Director will inevitably have new ideas about how an event and company can adapt to a changing marketplace. And the challenges that come with adapting to WOMEX’s growth mean special effort has to be expended to stay true to the event’s original aims. “There is always room for some evolution. As part of a general restructuring, WOMEX announces other additions and changes. Evelyn Bardow is now Director of Production & Special Projects and will be working with Gerald on WOMEX Offspring projects. To complete the team, Christine Semba, WOMEX’s tireless Director of Content & Programmes, will be joined by Alex Walter as Content & Programmes Manager, Software Engineer Alexander VIPach now works fulltime with WOMEX IT Director Stephan Siedler, and Anna Pötzsch, Media & Communications Manager, will be taking a maternity leave in Feburary with Nisha Anders replacing her temporarily for the months to come. Two new stages at Roskilde ‘07 Allan McGowan [email protected] Astoria and Cosmopol. These are the names of two brand-new stages at Roskilde Festival 2007. They share the idea of housing musical fusions in special stage designs. At the same time the festival waves goodbye to the stages Ballroom and Metropol after many years of faithful service Each year Roskilde Festival makes big and small adjustments on the music stages. Last year the big sound tower in front of the Orange Stage was removed, and this year it is time to freshen up the contents and designs on two of the festival’s other stages. tributed to changing the audience’s view on world music. But now the time has come for trying new things. Roskilde Astoria has room for new forms of expression and display – both in the range of music and in the design of the stage tent. ‘Delicate’ and intimate acts play in the daytime, while the late hours present a club stage with energetic parties in the closed tent. Roskilde Astoria makes room for intimacy between artists and the audience. Naturally, this does not mean goodbye to world music – it can still be heard as rich and surprising as it comes on all the festival’s stages. Intimacy in Roskilde Astoria After 10 successful years, the festival says goodbye to Roskilde Ballroom. Since 1997 the stage has offered some of the biggest surprises at Roskilde Festival and has con- Roskilde Cosmopol – music from the big city and the underground Electronic music has fused with other forms of expression. Therefore, the festival is looking forward to presenting Roskilde Cosmopol, a new hot spot for the underground urban genres. Here the audience can hear hip hop, dancehall, grime, R&B, urban world music, neo soul and music from the more organic electronic scene. It all takes place in a new stage design with room for bands, DJs, breakdance and rap battles, visuals and much more. Of course, the decoration has to match the music, so expect a cosmopolitical urban environment with inspiration from the pulsating beat of the big city. Roskilde Cosmopol has capacity for 6,000 people so there will also be plenty of space for dancing in the tent. Roskilde Festival 5 VIP-BOOKING.COM VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 Glastonbury Again Attempts to Beat the Touts Allan McGowan [email protected] In a further bid to defeat the ticket touts who target the Festival every year, tickets for this year’s Glastonbury festival will feature a photo of the buyer. Tickets will be non-exchangeable and if ticket holders do not match the picture they will be will be denied entry to the event.. Those wanting to attend will have to preregister during February to be able to buy the £150 tickets that go on sale on 1 April. An extra 25,000 tickets will be available this year. Organiser Michael Eavis is determined to wipe out ticket touts, and according to the BBC, said, “Hopefully this ploy will be successful - it could really put the ticket touts out of business. At the last festival, official tickets were on sale for £125 but there were instances of them changing hands for up to £700. This is just not fair for the people who want to come along and enjoy the music. Technology has improved so much that we can now include a picture of the purchaser on the ticket and if you don’t match the picture at the gate you won’t get in.” This year’s line up, following last year’s break to allow the farmlands to recover, is still a matter of speculation. According to Music Week magazine, Chumbawamba, are the first band to be confirmed, and acts including the Chemical Brothers, Kasabian, Razorlight, Scissor Sisters and The Who are all rumoured to have been approached. News that The Police are to reform to play dates this year have added the band to the possibilities. This year’s event is due to be held from 2224 June at Eavis’ Worthy Farm in Somerset, subject to licence. DF Concerts, one of Europe’s leading concert promoters, is gearing up for a phenomenal year in 2007 with the addition of a brand new festival to its already successful calendar of events. When the evening’s attraction Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 returned to the stage for an encore they were accompanied by REM vocalist Michael Stipe and bassist Mike Mills and performed two tracks, one being the 1997 classic ‘Electrolite’ and a brand new, as yet, unreleased track. Robyn Hitchcock has been a key influence in England’s alternative pop for some 30 years now, both solo and with the Soft Boys. The Venus 3 is his new group and features REM and Minus 5 members Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey & Bill Rieflin. Michael Stipe and Robyn Hitchcock at the Zodiac Early bird tickets for 2007’s Connect festival, went on sale on Saturday (16th December) as a special early Christmas present for music fans. Connect will take place in the grounds of the stunning Inveraray Castle in Argyll, from Friday 31st August until Sunday 2nd September. The three day event will be full to bursting with an eclectic mix of bands, artists, DJ’s, performers, cabaret, visual artists and installations. 2006 has been DF Concerts’ busiest year to date with 776 shows by artists including Morrissey, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Hot Chip, Guillemots, Paolo Nutini, Muse, Kasabian, The Fratellis, The Killers, The Kooks, My Chemical Romance, Snow Patrol and Razorlight taking place over 62 venues. King Tut’s was also named ‘Best UK Venue’ at the Music Week Awards in March as well as being included in New York Magazine’s ‘Follow Your Bliss List’ as one of the top 50 places to visit in the world. October saw T in the Park being crowned ‘Best Major Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards for a second consecutive year as 7 VIP-BOOKING.COM well as being named ‘Music Festival of the Year’ in the List Magazine end of year reader’s poll. T in the Park fans showed their dedication to the festival when they snapped up over a third of the tickets for the 2007 event, in under 70 minutes. On top of the awards and faithful fans, a study conducted after the 2005 event revealed that the overall impact of T in the Park to Scotland’s economy was £18 million using a strigent research model developed by EventScotland not yet adopted by other events. Taking place during the Edinburgh International Festival in August, T on the Fringe also enjoyed its most fruitful year to date with 57 shows (an increase of 380% from 2000), including more outdoor shows than ever before and the media evaluation for the event being valued at almost £2 million alone. Ticket sales for the month totalled 120,000 making it one of the biggest music festivals in the UK and the line up was one of the most exciting yet with outstanding performances the likes of Muse, Kasabian, Belle & Sebastian, Scritti Politti, Regina Spektor and Snow Patrol. 2007 is shaping up to be another fantastic year for live music in Scotland with shows already announced by some of the biggest artists in the world including The Killers, Faithless, Snoop Dogg, P.Diddy and Il Divo plus a record breaking four shows in a row from Paolo Nutini at the Glasgow Academy and over 10,500 tickets sold for break-through band, The Fratellis. T in the Park will return to Balado on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th July while Connect while make its debut at Inveraray Castle on Friday 31st August until Sunday 2nd September. VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 Mangels Moves On To FKP Scorpio Manfred Tari [email protected] Yan Mangels has left Wir Kümmern Uns. Mangels who founded the agency 7 years ago previously worked for MZEE-Booking and has been booking since the early nineties. He has been in Hamburg for 8 years and decided to take on a new post as a booking agent at FKP Scorpio. VIP-News: What was the reason for the change from Wir Kümmern Uns (WKU) to FKP Scorpio? FKP Scorpio or not. This depends whether the name could be integrated. Otherwise I will hold on to it. VIP-News: What will happen to the WKU personnel? Mangels: My assistant Steffi Jaspers will go with me. The rest I will unfortunately have to dismiss because there are no jobs for them at FKP Scorpio. Yan Mangels Yan Mangels: This isn’t so much of a change after all. I will take most of my acts from WKU and continue to work with them at FKP Scorpio, but this will be supplemented by further activities. How it came to this is relatively simple: Apart from some fair achievements, especially with Fettes Brot, WKU has stagnated throughout the last years. I’m sorry to say so, but this is the case. As a result I was searching for new prospects. One opportunity resulted from a conversation I had with Folkert Koopmanns, with whom I had worked very happily with at a lot of festivals, the result was that in the future I will work for FKP Scorpio. VIP-News: How does your agenda look for 2007? VIP-News: Will you take a lot of acts along to FKP Scorpio? VIP-News: Have you noticed differences between the work in a small firm in comparison to a big company? Mangels: At the moment I can’t really say how many acts. But the proposition to change to FKP was made to most of the artists at WKU. Naturally this is a good opportunity for most of them and as such I should be representing more of them in the future. Mangels: I expect 2007 to be come an exciting year, because I am now in a much bigger company. I’m keen to see how fast I can transcribe my way of working to the new company and what will fit in or what will change. It is all about reorientation and of course some new activities will supplement the old ones. I hope that I can prove myself quickly at FKP Scorpio following on from what I have done over the years and that some of this will work well in the new position.. VIP-News: What will happen to WKU? Mangels: In my first days at FKP Scorpio I had to familiarise myself with the software and the company details and so on, so as I’ve only been working here for two weeks this has been taking up the time. But what I am able to say is that this is definitely another dimension of doing business. Mangels: It is not fully clear whether I will use the name for this specific booking section at VIP-News: When will you have your first FKP Scorpio tours taking place? strip_v2_vip_booking_250x70 15/01/07 18:18 Mangels: The tours that were already booked in the last year will certainly proceed. We had a Jahcoustix tour start last week, Dendemann this week and in February Epo555 will start their tour. Beside this we have some single events, too. The aspiration is that all will continue without big breaks. VIP-News: What was the trigger for your decision? Mangels: WKU was a small firm in which you depended on searching for the acts on your own in a very early stage of their career. You have to build the artists up on your own, too, because established acts more often work together with big agencies. Moreover the time you need to establish a new act has expanded in the last years. Of course there are some exceptions that have been successful right from the beginning, but otherwise you have to undertake huge efforts. I have put in these efforts but there came a point when I had to realise that it couldn’t go on this way. I came to a crossroad: Do I want to keep on keeping on by myself or do I want to try something new? FKP Scorpio offered such a chance. Page 1 Come to the source! So the following are some representatives quotes that give an overall impression for this incomparable business event: Claudio Trotta - Barley Arts Steve Strange - X Ray Touring Claudio Trotta Steve Strange VIP-News: What is your opinion of Noorderslag? Steve Strange: I think it is great. I was here four years ago and it has grown so much since then. I really like it. Good topics, good bands, nice venues and a great city. VIP-News: Any favourite bands already discovered yet? Strange: I saw Oh No Ono from Denmark last night and I think they were really good. I really loved them. VIP-News: Are you happy that there are not so many English booking agencies around? Strange: This doesn’t affect me really. I’m not here on a competition trip. It is just a model to get my business done. It is good to close some festivals quite early on before ILMC, before they are all gone. Getting ahead of the game, that´s what I call it. VIP-News: First impression Noorderslag Weekend 2007? about Claudio Trotta: It is fantastic as always. First of all I love this little town of Groningen, very nice, always bicycles around and the people. You know living in a town like Milan you have to be scared of the car riders here you have to be scared of the bicycle drivers! Anyway it is great because I mean there are a lot of people around from all over Europe, a lot of good music. Yesterday I saw very interesting acts like Juli Finlay, Oh No Ono from Denmark, Shitgo from Glasgow and a French act, I can’t remember the name now. It all seems very well organised. I think it is worthwhile, yes. VIP-News: Italy was the guest country of Noorderslag this year. Are you satisfied with the choice of the acts that appeared here? Trotta: Mauro Valenti is a good friend of mine. Having said this I would say that if I was involved I would maybe add some different styles or some different act. As a 9 VIP-BOOKING.COM matter of fact, they did a great job anyway. Malenko is a very good band; Sud Sound System is a very good band. Some of the Italian bands that are here I have to say I don’t know, but in general terms it is great that there is a focus on Italy. It is not easy because when Italian music is too typical, too close to the Italian roots, maybe it is not easy to cross the border. If Italian music is copying an Anglo-American style then, as a matter of fact, probably the Anglo-American bands do it better than all the others. But I think some Italian acts are really interesting because they mix the genres. I think in general what is interesting to me, is that it doesn’t make any difference whether it is Italian, Spanish, American or whatever, trying to cross over with the music, going outside of the proper roots. It is not easy for Italian music to go outside of Italy. There are so many very interesting European bands that I have to say that they are probably better than ours, than the Italian acts. But some Italian acts are very good, even outside of Italy. Maybe we will see some new alternative Italian acts. VIP-News: In most European countries, including Italy domestic talents have really gained market share over the last couple of years. Do you think that there is a better awareness for European acts since Noorderslag has been following a very European approach towards the support of talent? Trotta: First of all I may have to correct what you said. In Italy the domestic music was stronger than in the rest of Europe, especially in northern Europe. Ten, fifteen years ago, we always had a strong Italian domestic scene, like it was in Spain, in Germany, in France. The rest of Europe started in the last four or five years. Yes I think there is space for European Music outside every single country and as a matter of fact new technology and also new possibilities like MySpace or YouTube and this type of conference is help- VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 ing to spread the music. The only concern is that if this LiveNation monopoly in so many countries will reduce the chances for domestic acts. I think that most, if not all, multi national companies are the same; it makes no difference if they sell bubblegum or live music or records, they want to sell the same products all over the world. One of my concerns for the future years is that I hope that the independent scene will get stronger and stronger in live and in media and the record business. Because we need independent sources and we need local resources to live in a global world and to succeed in a global world. Guisi Nibbi – FAWI Fondazione Arezzo Wave Italia (FAWI) with others were responsible for putting Italy on the Eurosonic/Nooderslag Agenda. VIP-News spoke with Giusi Nibbi who was involved in the organisation of delivering acts, arts and artists to Groningen. VIP-News: What is your opinion about Noorderslag 2007 from an Italian point of view? Giusi Nibbi: Yes, it was a great year because for the first time 19 Bands were presented in the heart of Europe and it is a great festival. I think we had the opportunity of showing the diversity and the many genres of Italian music from electronic to folk to pop to rock music. The attendance of these acts was a really good thing. And also thanks to the European Talent Exchange Program (ETEP), we had some positive feedbacks for these bands. FAWI Foundation of Italy, which is the Italian export office, intends to organize a big festival, also we had the occasion to see very good bands. We have heard that these kinds of European festivals will grow and grow and will have much more impact in the music industry and we think as festivals, that we work the hardest which we thank a lot, was the first step to have further investment for the exportation and importation of European music. VIP-News: Who funded you in this case? Nibbi: Actually apart from our usual local public investors and some private banks that give funding to the foundation, there weren’t specific other partners, except for the two I mentioned before. Some of the agencies that back the artists that came here invested money and we did the coordination altogether, to bring money together, to do the compilation, to do the flyers, to do all the publicity and advertisement, which I hope will bring some good feedback. VIP-News: Did you have to raise a huge investment? VIP-News: Noorderslag is very much focused on the live music side. Did you have any support from the record labels? Nibbi: I mean the most important investment was the hard work everybody had to do in order to have these yet unknown bands in Europe, to have them here. I think that the involvement from Italian institutions like the embassy or the Italian institute of culture, Nibbi: No, there was just a little support for our compilation from MEI (Meeting delle eticheti Indipendenti), but other record companies or other organisation didn’t really support us. In Italy what we are doing as a foundation is that we are working a lot Having the right tools for the job is often the key to success. VIP-NEWS VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 on gathering all the different association of category in the music field in order to have a common regulation from the government that can support many activities. But it is also about bringing together the various organisations to support Italian music. It is not a real thing yet, unfortunately. VIP-News: And your final comment is? Nibbi: I would like to than Buma Cultuur, of course, and I would like also to say that Italy I think is a great market. We hope that you gotsome clue about what happens in the Italian scene. Thanks to the Italian Foundations, Public Radio RAI Uno of course and the many talented journalists of top magazines and TV channels, magazines like radio publica. I think this is another very important aspect of this event. I think it will bring further knowledge of the European scene of Noorderslag Seminar and it will give the Italians the chance to explore further what we are doing with these European programs and with Eurosonic. VIP-News: To which conventions you are going next? Nibbi: We certainly do Midem and South By South-West. There will be a focus on two Italian bands, maybe an Italian talents show at SXSW. Peter Smidt – Creative Director Noorderslag introduced the separate entrances for audience and professionals. I think we have to improve it again, but I think we made a start and there was better circulation for professionals than last year. I still think we can improve it more next year. Amongst the panels there were a lot of live music professionals at the session with Dick Molenaar and Harald Grams regarding the fact that Holland has stopped the artist tax,. I have never seen a panel that busy. I think this is an example that should be followed by Germany and other countries. And I think everyone is now aware that they should put their pressure on tax ministers to do this as Holland did. VIP-News: Are you already able to foresee which acts are going to be hot? VIP-News: Could it be the case that you have to give the lobbyists in the other European countries some lessons? Could they learn something from the Netherlands? Were there any meetings going on with politicians this year? VIP-News: The financial backing by the European Commission for ETEP in 2007 isn’t confirmed yet? Peter Smidt: Yes, there was one debate about pop and politics at the seminar on a Dutch level and there were several informal meetings. At this specific moment we weren’t aware of a lot of common problems that we should address right now. So it was on the national level. VIP-News: Do you have anything to say about the future of Noorderslag in 2008? Peter Smidt: Well, we have the new date and the basic settings will remain the same. We are going ahead. We are very happy with the changes we made regarding the festival lounge and the network lounge. We also going to evaluate and see how we can continue improving facilities for participants. Ruud Berends – Musicxport Netherlands Peter Smidt VIP-News: Are you happy with Noorderslag 2007? Peter Smidt: Yes, Im very happy. We just had the first selection of acts meeting and the selections are from 128 shows, which is very good. I think it’s going to be a very good ETEP year. I think the program was pretty o.k. We VIP-News: How did the ETEP selections for 2007 go? Ruud Berends: Oh, we had a new record. We just had a first selection meeting. It was very interesting to see this year that 53 of the 54 ETEP festivals took part in at the Noorderslag weekend 2007. And the amount of bands being mentioned at the first selection meeting is once again promising a new record for 2007. 11 VIP-BOOKING.COM Berends: I think The Magic Numbers made a wise decision to restart their career by performing for all the festivals that are present at the Noorderslag weekend because their name was mentioned quite a lot amongst others. VIP-News: Other names? Berends: Goose for example, but I don t remember them all. The View, Oh No Ono those were the ones mentioned most. Berends: The EU-part is not confirmed yet, but together with the European music platform members, the European export offices, Buma Cultuur we managed to have a limited budget for one year to keep the program running on a decent level. And all the involved festivals understand this situation and nobody is leaving the program. In fact on the contrary, I have 25 festivals who have entered the program. We hope for a positive decision from the EU somewhere in 2007 for 2008 and onwards. VIP-News: What is the general mood of the involved parties such as Europe and the EBU, are they interested in continuing with the program? Is it possible that even without the support of the EU it may still succeed? Berends: I like to think in many possible scenarios, from the most negative to the most positive. The most negative one is that we wouldn’t have enough funding to invest in paying the festivals. Basically I don’t think that the bonuses are the deciding factor for ETEP festivals to say yes or no or to stay or to leave the program. I think they like the cooperation of partners and ETEP is a visibility program and I think this is strongest point and the main reason for everybody to be involved. According to latest news, out of 49 ETEP Bands the following were the first to pick up bookings for the ETEP festival season 2007: The View (UK/11 bookings), Magic VIP- News - J a n u a r y 2 0 0 7 Numbers (UK/ 9), Goose (B/8), O No Ono (DK/ 6) and Peter Bjorn & John (SW/ 6). Robert Meijerink – Artistic Director Eurosonic VIP-News: What are your first summaries and conclusions? Robert Meijerink: This was my second year actually but the first year in full charge. I saw the ETEP results this afternoon, which was more or less, I will call it, successful. People were quite positive or really positive. There are always a few people who are complaining about the fact that there are too many UK-bands, that it’s too commercial.. But if you have 170 acts, there are always a few weak players you know? It’s not only quality, you can’t guarantee quality, it’s about music from other regions, from other countries. Not even all the English bands are good. Still, it doesn’t matter where it comes from, Belgium or Czechoslovakia, it´s about the quality and about the music. VIP-News: How long does it take you, do to all the research and the booking itself. Meijerink: A whole year, seven days a week. It’s not a nine to five job, I’m always looking for new acts, fresh acts, talking to people from New York, booking festivals, running labels. Even if there is a tour manager and I see there’s good support during their tour in Italy and he gives his contact to me, I visit him. The European market is still growing really strong. The Scandinavian part is getting stronger and stronger during the last year, but now there are more countries that are still growing and growing on a musical level. Like the Belgian band “Goose”, I saw “Dead Trombone“ from Portugal yesterday; I thought it was really amazing. Portugal has quite a good reputation on the musical level, but on another level, not on the Pop/ Rock-music level, but from my point of view, it’s becoming stronger. VIP-News: Is there anything, you would like to change on the infrastructure settings for Eursonic/Noorderslag. Will you keep all the same venues? Meijerink: No, we are trying to avoid the student theatre. We’ve been using it for two years and we’ll use it again, but we are trying to keep it fresh in a way. If you are visiting the event each year, you must have the feeling that something new is going on. It’s not good to have the same thing every year, and of course, it’s also really important, that the people know the way to the venues, that they find the venues. VIP-News: In the “Dag Blad van het Noordens” I’ve seen a little article this morning, reporting about the “Voordringer”. It looks like that the people, the true passionate music lovers who pay en- trance, are feeling a little bit upset about the numbers of professionals getting into town now and getting in to the gigs. Meijerink: I think we could at least explain to the people, what kind of event we organise. Of course, they have the point, but it’s also really, really important, that the people notice the importance of a showcase festival. People are investing in the event, there’s radio involved, people from Sweden or France are coming with their radio and trucks to Groningen. It’s really important to let the people know what the event is about, but it’s always hard to make a difference between the audience and the professionals relevance. I think it’s good that they write about it, but it’s more important to make sure, that everybody knows, what the event is about. VIP-News: Which acts have been your favourites and are they the same as those that appear in the first selection of the ETEP-members? Meijerink: Well, not really. A few like Leningrad from Russia are winners. People like the show and I saw the band live before but I didn’t know the public reactions. I didn’t know what to expect, but it was packed inside and everybody loved the show. So it always surprising. If an act is playing very well and convinced the audience, then it’s the start of a success. Leningrad is a winner, “Goose” from Belgium is a winner, “The View” from England is a winner. “Oh No Ono”, I think it’s number two or three; I loved the band and they’re winners too. VIP-News: Tell me a little bit about your history. Meijerink: I started to work in a U-Centre when I was 15 years old and I started to organise the festival ‘Those were the days.’ Then I became a student of culture and psychology. I kept working on with bands: I was tour manager, light producer, manager, booker. Then I was organising a festival in Nijmegen called Valkof Affair. That’s a free festival with 5000 visitors during mid-July, I’m still doing that. Then I became a promoter of Doornrosje in Nijmegen, the venue and I’m still doing that. Last year I was asked to become the booker of Eurosonic.
