Spring 06 - Elite Security Hawaii
What’s New? Aloha from Ricky W I T H S W E E T I E PA C A R R O It’s always good to have a backup — especially when it comes to your security system. Most fixed-alarm systems depend on phone lines to communicate an alarm signal to a central station. But phone lines are not foolproof. GE Interlogix They can be broken or cut, meaning an alarm signal may never reach its destination. The Secure Communications System from GE Interlogix is designed to provide your security system with a backup plan — giving you peace of mind. Using the Cellemetry® network, the Secure Communications System transmits a full three-watt cellular signal — five times the strength of a regular cell phone signal — for fast and secure alarm-signal transmission to the central station. The Secure Communications System offers unprecedented protection in the event of a service failure due to a broken or interrupted phone line. It is an effective and sensible add-on to an existing phone line security alarm and now available from Elite Security Systems. Cost including installation is $595 plus tax and there is an additional monthly charge of $25 each month for the cellular service. For more information, call Elite Security Systems at 732-5552. It’s more important than ever for us to band together to keep our neighborhoods crime-free. One way to prevent crime is to start a Neighborhood Security Watch (NSW), a program sponsored by the Honolulu Police Department. Getting started is simple: 1. The first step is to contact HPD’s Informational Resources Section at 529-3351, or log on at www.honolulupd.org, to request an officer to come to your community to present an informational lecture on NSW. 2. You and your neighbors will decide which program or programs work best for your area. Participants will select a Coordinator and Block Captain, to serve as the conduit between your neighborhood and HPD. The new year is in full gear and spring is here. We’re excited about the first issue of Elite Connection for 2006. Our cover story this month is about a company that has been serving Hawaii’s appliance needs since the 1930s. We’ll tell you about Servco’s newly-remodeled Home and Appliance Showroom in Mapunapuna — it’s truly a must-see for those in the market for appliances. We’re also introducing a new section — a special treat for our Elite clients. “Side Street Inn’s Recipe Corner” offers some taste-tempting recipes from this favorite local eatery. Finally, we think you’ll be interested in a new product designed to make your current security system even better. In “What’s New with Sweetie,” find out about the Secure Communications System from GE Interlogix, designed to give your security system a backup plan. So sit back and enjoy this issue of Elite Connection! 3. Members will then sign up to be part of the NSW and receive informational materials. 4. Members will be trained in home security techniques, observation skills and crime reporting. Residents will also learn about the types of crime affecting the area. 5. Regular meetings will be held to help residents work together on a common goal of preventing crime in their neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch programs are the foundation of community crime prevention and have been proven to be one of the most effective and least costly answers to crime. Lois Miyashiro is Elite Security’s “voice with a smile.” She has been with the company for more than 10 years, wearing many different hats — from receptionist to being Elite’s first female apprentice installer. FROM ELITE SECURITY SYSTEMS E L I T E N E W S L E T T E R W R I T T E N B Y: S TA C Y Y U E N H E R N A N D E Z VOLUME IIII SPRING 2006 Stepping into the new Servco Home and Appliance Showroom is like walking through the pages of a glossy, sophisticated kitchen design magazine. Whether you’re in the market for the latest in kitchen appliances and accessories or just imagining what your dream kitchen might actually look like, Servco’s sparkling, remodeled Mapunapuna showroom will fulfill your needs. “Our 7,000-square-foot showroom is the most diverse of its kind in Hawaii,” says Craig Washofsky, Servco group vice president who oversees the distribution center. “Prior to the remodeling, we had about 3,000 square feet of display area, but our new configuration now shows off our appliances in 22 different kitchen vignettes created by 13 Hawaii designers.” In existence since 1996, the showroom had its grand reopening boasting its new look on Jan. 31. And according to Washofsky, it has been more popular than ever. The showroom features some of the latest in cutting-edge technology and then some. Through the kitchen vignettes, consumers are able to see how an appliance looks in an actual setting and in many cases, see and hear how it works, too. “They can experience for themselves how the quietest dishwasher made in the U.S. sounds — or doesn’t sound,” says Washofsky. The Bosch Integra Vision dishwasher is one of the many items on display, but there are many other cutting-edge products to get up close and personal with — and some are really “hot” — both figuratively and literally. “We have the GE Monogram’s Pro Range which has four burners, a grill, griddle and two ovens,” he says. “We also have an This ultra-modern kitchen is one induction of 22 vignettes in the Servco Home burner from and Appliance Showroom. Continued on page 9 Tom Moffatt Showman of the Pacific Island baby boomers fondly remember him as one of the original “Poi Boy” deejays on K-POI radio back in the ’60s and ’70s. Hawaii’s Generation X knows him as the promoter who brought The King of Pop to Aloha Stadium for two sold-out shows. Anyone who has paid any attention to Hawaii’s music and entertainment industry over the last five decades, knows that Tom Tom Moffatt Moffatt is a legend in Hawaii. And now he’s sharing a half-century of musical memories in a 234-page autobiography, released earlier this year. “Showman of the Pacific: 50 Years of Radio and Rock Stars” is filled with revealing anecdotes and more than 400 classic photos for the inside story of Hawaii show business and some unforgettable recollections. One moment is embedded in his memory, says Moffatt. It was when he Continued on page 2 We named the company after our customers! SPOTLIGHT: Continued from page 1 “Tom Moffatt” introduced Elvis Presley at the Old Stadium in The King’s first Hawaii appearance back in 1957. “It was the first time I had seen a real rock ‘n’ roll star perform,” recalls Moffatt. “Elvis finished ‘Hound Dog,’ the version as we know it on record, then he did an encore of it — the whole tempo came down slowly and he did the whole song that way and ended by jumping off the stage to the ground and falling to his knees. I thought, ‘Wow — this is rock ‘n’ roll … this is entertainment … this is it.” In his illustrious career Moffatt has worked with nearly every major act in the music business, from Elvis to Elton John, to Frank Sinatra to the Rolling Stones. And to say he has been successful as a promoter is an understatement. “To be successful in this business, or any business, the number one thing is to know the business,” explains Moffatt. “Henry J. Kaiser once said ‘find a need and fill it.’ The key is knowing your marketplace. In the promotion business, you can’t let your own tastes get in the way. You need to bring in what you feel people want.” Moffatt does that by talking to people and listening. On a recent Neighbor Island trip, he did just that and learned that it seems that folks would like to see Canadian crooner Michael Buble. And that wasn’t really a surprise since he knows the local market. “Hawaii style is softer. They like ballads, love songs — I can bring Earth, Wind & Fire and have a sellout crowd.” Hawaii also loves Elton John. And Moffatt’s friendship with the British star also has an interesting story. Moffatt recalls traveling to Osaka, Japan in the 1990’s to see two “piano men” in concert — Elton John and Billy Joel. “I had brought leis for them and presented one to Billy before the concert and was told that Elton was going to arrive at the last minute. I asked a girl who worked for a friend who was a promoter in Japan to please give the lei to Elton and that I would come back after the show to see him,” recalls Moffatt. “After the concert, I went backstage and learned (Above): Tom Moffatt welcomes that Elton had Elvis Presley to Hawaii in 1957. just left on a bullet train to Tokyo so I didn’t get to see him.” A few months later, Moffatt received a call from Emme Tomimbang, who is a friend of someone in Elton’s immediate circle of friends. “Emme called to tell me that “Elton was so happy you remembered his birthday and brought him the lei!” Not long after, Moffatt got a call from Elton’s agent which eventually resulted in three performances at the Blaisdell Arena. It’s been, literally, a star-studded career for Tom Moffatt, but the work is far from done. “I’m now doing a column for MidWeek and I hope to bring more great concerts to Hawaii —I hope to someday bring Paul McCartney if he’s planning to go to Japan or the West Coast and Madonna or Cher, and Tina Turner if she ever comes out of retirement,” he says. “I really enjoy what I’m doing and I’m always looking for a new act that will draw lots of people — as long as people keep coming to the concerts, I’m not letting up.” (Left): Tom Moffatt with Carlos Santana. “The Showman of the Pacific: 50 Years of Radio and Rock Stars” by Tom Moffatt: Watermark Publishing, $34.95 Available at bookstores or on the Web at www.bookshawaii.net 2 Elite Connection A & E Creations 2222 Kalakaua Ave. #1218 Honolulu, Hawaii 96815 Phone: 926-8886 Agatha Paris - Ala Moana Ala Moana Shopping Center Honolulu, Hawaii 96814 Phone: 944-5100 Agatha Paris - Waikiki 2342 Kalakaua Avenue Honolulu, Hawaii 96815 Phone: 923-3383 Aina Haina 76 830 West Hind Drive Honolulu, Hawaii 96821 Phone: 373-2311 Air Balance Hawaii 3023 Kaimuki Avenue Honolulu, Hawaii 96816 Phone: 737-2710 Air Source Air Conditioning 935 Dillingham Blvd. Unit 9 Honolulu, Hawaii 96819 Phone: 847-7500 Akal Security 6650 Hawaii Kai Drive #250 Honolulu, Hawaii 96825 Phone: 396-6866 Ala Wai Chevron 407 Kapahulu Ave. Honolulu, Hawaii 96815 Phone: 737-7986 Aloha Airlines Honolulu International Airport Honolulu, Hawaii 96820 Phone: 836-7431 Aloha State Brokerage 1001 Dillingham Blvd. #212 Honolulu, Hawaii 96817 Phone: 847-4640 American Restaurant Supply 98-107A Kamehameha Hwy.
