Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. But early in the
morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the
people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught
them. Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a
woman who had been caught in adultery and made her
stand in the middle. They said to him, “Teacher, this
woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such
women.* So what do you say?” They said this to test him,
so that they could have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with
his finger. But when they continued asking him, he
straightened up and said to them, “Let the one among you
who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Again he bent down and wrote on the ground. And in
response, they went away one by one, beginning with the
elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him.
Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, “Woman,
where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She
replied, “No one, sir.” Then Jesus said, “Neither do I
condemn you. Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

En aquel tiempo, Jesús se fue al monte de los Olivos. Al
amanecer volvió al Templo y toda la multitud venía a él.
Entonces se sentó para enseñar. Los maestros de la Ley y
los fariseos le trajeron una mujer que había sido
sorprendida en adulterio. La colocaron en medio y le
dijeron: “Maestro, han sorprendido a esta mujer en pleno
adulterio. La Ley de Moisés ordena que mujeres como
ésta deben morir apedreadas.* Tú, ¿qué dices?” Con esto
querían ponerlo en dificultades para poder acusarlo. Jesús
se inclinó y se puso a escribir en el suelo con el dedo.
Como le seguían preguntando, se enderezó y dijo: “El que
no tenga pecado lance la primera piedra”. Se inclinó de
nuevo y siguió escribiendo en el suelo. Y todos se fueron
retirando uno a uno, comenzando por los más viejos. Jesús
quedó solo con la mujer que seguía de pie en el mismo
lugar. Entonces se enderezó y le dijo: “Mujer, ¿dónde
están? ¿Ninguno te ha condenado?”. Ella contestó:
“Ninguno, Señor”. Jesús le dijo: ”Yo tampoco te condeno.
Vete y no vuelvas a pecar en adelante”.

Brief commentary
Chapters 7 and 8 of John’s Gospel record a series of
dialogues and controversies as the story turns toward the
passion. These theological disagreements between Jesus
and the Jewish religious authorities brought Jesus to the
cross. By the time this Gospel was written, John’s
community had already been forced out of the synagogue
because of the apparent contradiction between their
interpretation of the law of Moses and Jesus’ emphasis on
love and forgiveness. In this passage, the scribes and
Pharisees are trying to trap Jesus. They have a great case:
“the very act of committing adultery!” Jesus’ initial
silence and the mysterious writing on the ground put a
stop to the angry malice of his opponents. Jesus’
consequent words do not approve of adultery, but
demonstrate in a dramatic way the extent of God’s
forgiveness.
Today’s reading offers significant message:
Jesus points to the difference between the sin and the
sinner. His final words combine forgiveness with the
encouragement to sin no more.
As Jesus draws closer to his passion, his actions
become more entangled in disagreements with the local
authorities and a serious threat to their uncontested
power.
The words, “If you are without sin...” pretty much
excludes all stone throwing .
Comentario
Los capítulos 7 y 8 del Evangelio según San Juan narran
los desacuerdos teológicos entre Jesús y los líderes
religiosos judíos. Fueron estas disputas las que
contribuyeron a llevar a Jesús hasta la cruz. Cuando este
Evangelio se escribió, la comunidad jónica ya había sido
expulsada de la sinagoga. Esto se debió en parte a la
manera literal en que los judíos interpretaban la Ley de
Moisés y el énfasis de Jesús en la ley del perdón y del
amor. En este pasaje, los maestros de la Ley y los fariseos
tratan de hacerle quedar mal ante todos. Le presentan un
caso indiscutible: “¡la han sorprendido en pleno
adulterio!” El silencio inicial de Jesús y su misterioso
escribir en el suelo paralizan la actitud maliciosa de sus
oponentes. Las palabras de Jesús al final del episodio no
aprueban el adulterio, sino que demuestran de una forma
dramática el alcance del perdón de Dios.
La lectura de hoy nos presenta una idea importante:
Jesús distingue entre el pecado y el pecador. Sus últimas
palabras enlazan su perdón con la
admonición de
no volver a pecar en adelante.
A medida que la pasión se acerca, las acciones de Jesús
chocan más con las autoridades religiosas judías que
temen perder su poder sobre el pueblo.

Questions and Answers about Lent and Lenten Practices
Q. Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the days from Ash
Wednesday through Holy Saturday, there are 46.
A. It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within Lent." Historically, Lent has
varied from a week to three weeks to the present configuration of 46 days. The forty day fast, however, has
been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed
days of fast and abstinence.
Q. So does that mean that when we give something up for Lent, such as candy, we
can have it on Sundays?
A. Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday, and the days of abstinence every Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally
chosen additional penitential practices for the whole Time of Lent. These practices are
disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e., kept on
Sundays as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated by the Church, but by
individual conscience.
Q. I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but
I'm not sure what is classified as meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products?
A. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs --- all
of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid
foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consomme, soups cooked or flavored with meat,
meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not
forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animalderived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat
taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles,
(cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.
Q. I've noticed that restaurants and grocery stores advertise specials on expensive
types of fish and seafood on Fridays during Lent. Some of my Catholic friends take
advantage of these deals, but somehow I don't feel right treating myself to the
lobster special on Fridays during Lent.
A. While fish, lobster and other shellfish are not considered meat and can be consumed
on days of abstinence, indulging in the lavish buffet at your favorite seafood place sort of
misses the point. Abstaining from meat and other indulgences during Lent is a
penitential practice. On the Fridays of Lent, we remember the sacrifice of Christ on
Good Friday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice through abstinence and prayer.
Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on
Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts?
A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the
other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed
at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.
Q. Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday?
A. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or
mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are
pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not
further jeopardize their health by fasting.
