WELCOME TO ST. BRUNO CHURCH/BIENVENIDOS
At our Sunday Mass, we come together from
all our small communities and celebrate our
oneness in Christ. Take a little time to get to
know the folks you are celebrating Mass with.
Misa.
BULLETIN DEADLINE: Tuesday 3:00 p.m.
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
FIAT
FIAT is Latin for faith. We are saved by our faith in Jesus so St.
Paul writes. Faith alone, however, without work is dead, so St.
James states in his letter (2, 14-24).
The other Friday, reflecting on St. James’ letter in his early morning mass, Pope Francis said, “"You may know all the commandments, all the prophesies, all the truths of the faith, but if this
isn't put into practice, is not translated into works, it serves nothing.” He continued, “There can be people who know very little or
nothing about doctrine, ‘but have lots of faith’ because rather
than embracing "abstract truths," they embrace the living Christ.”
He concluded, “A faith without works, a faith that doesn't get you
involved is words and nothing more than words."
That powerful statement should shake us up from timidity to
boldness in exercising our faith. A faith that is not heartfelt, that
is nothing more than verbal pronouncement and a mental adherence to doctrines, is hollow and empty. I think FIAT is an acronym. It means Faith In Action Today. We have to make our faith
tangible. It is not a theory but a practice. It has to move us to
action, not in the distant future, but today.

When I was a chaplain at San Francisco General Hospital, I
worked under the Volunteers Department. One of the volunteers
I met is Marlis Tanner, a Catholic, dubbed as the “Shampoo
Lady”. Already in her late 70’s at that time, once a week, she
would walk the floors of the hospital pushing a shopping cart
filled with curlers, hair dryers, hair spray, shavers, shaving cream,
scissors, towels, mirror and a smock. She would offer a haircut,
shave and shampoo. The patients were just too happy to receive
a free 20-minute grooming service plus chit-chat. For many of
them, Marlis is their only visitor.
Another volunteer whose name I never learned but whose services I will never forget is a guy. Like Marlis, he would make a
round of the hospital floors once a week. If Marlis worked on the
head, this guy worked on the feet. He gave foot massage – to the
dying. I saw him at work. He would walk quietly to the bed of the
patient, take a bedside chair and position it at the foot of the
bed, sit down, pulls out a Discman (yep!) from his pocket and sets
it on the bed and switches it on. A barely-audible, calming music
would drift from the machine. Then very slowly and carefully, he
peels blanket and bed sheet from the dying patient, uncovering
one foot. With ointment, he would rub the toes, the sole, the
ankle and the topside summoning warmth and color to those
cold and pale extremities. He’d do one foot, then the other. In
half hour, he is done. He would pull back sheet and blanket,
pocket the Discman, return chair to its place, give a light tap on
the massaged feet and is gone. Not a word is spoken. How does
that line go again, the one attributed to St. Francis? Preach always, use words, if needed.

We have sent by wire-transfer the $25K to the Diocese of Borongan for church-roof repair in one parish and rectoryreconstruction in another parish. However, the mission is not
over. To better show our solidarity with the people of Eastern
Samar, we plan to send volunteers to work side by side with the
people, listen to their stories, laugh at their jokes and be inspired
by their resiliency.
Fr. Michael
FIAT

A, música relajante apenas
parte superior convocando calidez y color a esas extremidades
