History of Evanston
Stretching north from Howard Street and west from Lake Michigan, Evanston is a vibrant
community comprising many strong neighborhoods, races, religions and levels of income.
Northwestern University, a major landmark of Evanston, was actually founded before the
City itself. In 1851, the plans for Northwestern began and in 1855, Northwestern University
opened its doors for the first time to 10 students. The founders of Northwestern, one
being John Evans, submitted to the county judge their plans for a city and their wishes to
rename the town Evanston in 1854. In 1857, the town of Evanston was named.
During the Civil War, the town of Evanston fought on the side of
the abolitionists. After the war, Evanston saw a huge economic
and population boom. Between 1860 and 1870, the population
quadrupled.
Also during this time, an amendment was passed that prohibited
the sale of alcohol within four miles of the Northwestern campus.
Evanston became a town that supported the prohibition
movement and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was founded in Evanston in
1874.
Evanston continued to grow and remain independent of Chicago. The city became known
for its architecture and beautiful homes on the lake. Between 1920 and 1930, there was a
70 percent population increase.
Today, Evanston is sill thriving as an independent city. There are many cultural outlets in
Evanston, there is a thriving business economy and public lakefront recreation activities.
Evanston continues to prosper and refuses to be overshadowed by Chicago.

Welcome!
Nichols Middle School is home to approximately 550 students in grades six through eight. The Nichols
community strongly supports the school and the district’s mission to educate each child to succeed in and
contribute to our global community by cultivating creativity, compassion and the pursuit of excellence.
School staff work in cooperation with students, their families, and the larger community to promote
academic achievement, creativity, and positive character development that help prepare students as lifelong
learners and responsible, productive citizens. Teachers have opportunities for continued learning to keep
them current in best educational practices.
The middle school experience fosters critical thinking for the pre-adolescent youngsters. Students can
explore their creative interests and advanced learning needs. They take foreign language instruction, may
be eligible for advanced and honors level mathematics courses, and have access to advanced technologies
that support the curriculum and learning and help prepare these students for high school.
Learning and Curriculum
All students in the district are taught using the same standards-based curriculum, textbooks, and
materials. Classroom instruction is enhanced through the use of advanced technologies, fine arts, physical
education, media library, safe online databases and reference materials, enrichment opportunities, and
after-school clubs and activities.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is part of the school culture. It promotes behaviors that
help children understand and value learning in a well-disciplined school environment. Many other supports
are available at Nichols. These include school social work services, a health office, vision and hearing
screenings, and special education services.
Extracurricular Activities
There are lots of opportunities to pursue individual interests at Nichols School. Interscholastic sports are
offered to give boys and girls a chance to compete with students from the District’s other middle or magnet
school teams. Intramural athletics also are offered throughout the school year.
Musical talents can be explored in the music labs where students can write, mix, record and play back their
creations or through participation in concert and jazz bands, or orchestra. Nichols’ students also participate
annually in the national WordMasters competition and frequently post top scorers in the most difficult
division of the challenge. The school teams traditionally rank among the top in the nation in this
prestigious event that introduces complex vocabulary words that students learn and use.
Students can join one of the many school-sponsored activities and groups, such as Student Action Theater,
Sewing Club, Science Enrichment Club, Student Council, Yearbook, Chess Team and Chess Club, Nichols
Newbery Book Club, Woodshop Club, Math Counts, Foreign Language Club, and Garden Club.
Whatever a child’s interest, there’s something at Nichols to engage them and satisfy their creative
endeavors.
