August 5–7 | Bozeman, Montana
a festival of the arts
August 5–7 | Bozeman, Montana
Welcome!
Welcome to Sweet Pea Festival 2011, our 34th year! We are thrilled to invite the community, volunteers, and visitors to enjoy all the fantastic events
that are planned this year. I have found that volunteering, attending, and supporting such a unique event has always been an exciting opportunity
filled with an overwhelming sense of community. I hope you, your family, and friends have the same chance to experience the excitement, whether
you are at the park or taking part in the many other activities during the week prior to Festival weekend. The events kick off with the Sweet Pea Ball,
followed by Chalk on the Walk, Bite of Bozeman, and the Sweet Pea Art Show. All of this, along with an event-packed weekend at Lindley Park,
will demonstrate again the strong, simple mission of the Festival—to promote and cultivate the arts.
Your support with your admission purchase and attendance, along with all our volunteer and community support, is what allows us to continue the
tradition of the Sweet Pea Festival—so thank you! We hope to see you this year and for many years to come.

T-Shirt Art Contest Winners
14 Years and Up Category
“Sweet Pea Stacked”
by Nikki Erickson
Born in Roswell, New Mexico, Nikki holds a fine
arts degree with an emphasis in Graphic Design
from Eastern New Mexico University. Nikki enjoys
designing in Photoshop and also creates custom
letterpress invitations. For her t-shirt design, Nikki
was inspired by typography and wanted to create a
design that was simple and clean.
5–13 Years Category
“Pull Along Sweet Peas”
BY Karen Phillips
Karen, a 6th grader at Sacajawea Middle School,
was inspired by things planted in wagons for her
t-shirt design. She also thought that since kids
like wagons, it would make a good children’s
t-shirt. Karen has won the state competition for
the Smokey the Bear poster contest two years in a
row. She enjoys riding horses and playing soccer. When she grows up
Karen would like to be a wildlife biologist, a marine biologist, or an
archeologist.
Poster Contest Winner
Mother-daughter duo Karen Lucky
and Ivy Davis, both from Montana,
were very pleased and surprised to
learn that they had won the poster
contest. Karen began pursuing oil
painting seriously when pushed
by her daughter Ivy in the early
’90s. Since then, she has been
juried into numerous galleries. Ivy
has enjoyed success as a freelance
graphic designer and illustrator in
Bozeman.
Karen and Ivy wanted a fine art
feel in their entry, to set them apart
from other artists, so they decided
to include one of Karen’s oil paintings. They wanted a festive design
with bright colors, the recognizable mountains around Bozeman, and
the soft aspects of sweet pea flowers contrasted against the hard sense
of barbed wire. Karen and Ivy will sign posters during the Sweet Pea
Festival on Saturday, August 6, from 1–3pm at the merchandise tent.
Sweet Pea Festival posters will be on sale at various outlets (please visit
www.sweetpeafestival.org for listings). Posters are $20 and postcards
are $1. If your business is interested in displaying a poster in your
workplace, contact the Sweet Pea office at 586-4003.

Saturday 7/30 • 6:30pm • GranTree Inn Ballroom
Saturday 8/6 • 10am (Precedes parade) • Main Street
Get ready for a topsy-turvy evening at this year’s Sweet Pea Ball. The
GranTree Inn’s Grand Ballroom will be turned “Head Over Heels” and
Little Elmo & the Mambo Kings will have you swinging, swaying, and
be-bopping across the dance floor.
The fun starts here! As is tradition, the Sweet Pea Children’s 1K Run
will lead the Sweet Pea Parade. What a great way for your family to
spend their Saturday morning! The race begins 10am sharp at Main St.
and 8th Ave. and ends at S. Church Ave.
The Ball is the official kick-off for
the Sweet Pea Festival. Doors to
the GranTree Inn’s Grand Ballroom
open at 6pm, and a complimentary
one-hour dance lesson begins at
6:30pm. The evening officially
begins at 7:30pm and you can dance
to your heart’s content, or 11:30pm,
whichever comes first. Dance
competitions for Swing, West Coast
Swing, Lindy Hop, Salsa, and Argentine Tango will highlight the
evening—enter one or all. 1950s attire is encouraged so polish your
saddle shoes, dig out your horn-rimmed glasses, and dust off your
poodle skirt! All ages are welcome.
Advance tickets are $15 per person at Cactus Records, Vargo’s Jazz City,
and the Sweet Pea Office, or $18 at the door. For more information
please direct all inquiries to [email protected].

Music—Bowl/Main Stage
The Yes Team
Friday 8/5 • 6:30pm
This San Diego-based trio is comprised of seasoned musicians TJ Moss,
Kinnie Dye, and Jonathan Walsh. They are making waves coast to coast,
charting hits with their unique brand of pop-rock and soul. Their debut
album, Back to the Sea, includes a roster of original tunes, helmed by
catchy hooks and soulful lyrics, guaranteed to make an audience dance.
Bearfoot
Friday 8/5 • 8pm
Originally hailing from Alaska, Bearfoot
has become one of the top names in the
progressive bluegrass movement. Described
as a “string band for the 21st century,” the
quintet mixes “new-timey” bluegrass, folk,
and alternative country to create the perfect
blend of instrumentals and harmonies. The band has covered a lot
of ground: recording four albums, winning top honors at the 2001
Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and garnering top reviews from national
periodicals. Their latest album release, Doors and Windows, debuted in
the number one spot on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts.
Shawn Mullins
Sunday 8/7 • 3pm
Shawn is one of the finest singer-songwriters
working in the industry today. Although
he’s best known for his radio hits “Lullaby,”
“Shimmer,” and “Beautiful Wreck,” Shawn’s
music spans several genres including rock,
soul, blues, alt country, and acoustic. His
lyrics tell a story; they are filled with poetic introspection and quality
hooks. His voice is soulful, captivating the listeners’ ears. His latest
release, Light You Up, is roots and Americana music at its best.
Trees West Stage
Bebe LeBoeuf
Saturday 8/6 • 12pm
Bozeman’s premier Cajun-Zydeco band fuses accordion, fiddle, and a
toe-tapping rhythm section into a guaranteed good time.
Jawbone Railroad

Suzanne Ford play traditional folk, bluegrass, and original tunes.
Saturday 8/6 • 3pm
Landlocked
These award-winning musicians delve into music from Pink Floyd
and Rush, to Vivaldi and House of the Rising Sun, as well as their
own originals that have been featured everywhere from NPR to the
Travel Channel. Montana Skies’ seemingly non-stop touring has taken
them all across the US, and to Canada, Asia, and Russia. Combining
elements of classical technique, jazz improv, and rock n’ roll, Jonathan’s
guitar wizardry and Jenn’s blazing electric cello merge to create a truly
remarkable sound. It is a fusion in the truest sense of the word.
Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot
Skillet Lickers
Saturday 8/6 • 8pm
Led by the sultry vocals of Lavay Smith,
this seven piece all-star band from San
Francisco puts their own irresistible spin on

Washington, among others. The band has headlined shows at New
York’s Lincoln Theatre, the Hollywood Bowl, and Chicago Jazz Festival.
They have earned top reviews from numerous national publications.

Dance Kaleidoscope
Regina Carpenter, Storyteller
Saturday 8/6 • 6:30pm •
bowl/main stage
Saturday 8/6 • 12pm • family stage
Sunday 8/7 • 12pm • family stage
Founded in 1972, Dance Kaleidoscope is Indiana’s premier professional
contemporary dance company. DK’s
repertoire includes over 50 pieces,
ranging from dark and dramatic to
light and hysterical. At the Festival,
they will perform a light, fun concert
called Summer Musicals/Elvis Sizzle. The first act, entitled There’s No
Business Like Show Business, is set to several songs from Broadway
musicals, and the second act features Elvis Presley tunes with a
funky 1960s vibe. Dance Kaleidoscope’s afternoon family workshop
on the Cypress Point stage includes The Dance Show, an interactive
performance-based program focusing on the basic definition of dance
(shapes moving through space to a beat). All audience members are
invited to join dancers on the stage to create a community dance.
Theatre Highlights
for performance times and locations, see pages 6–7
This year’s theatre offerings showcase
an exciting variety of genres! Events
kick off on Friday with a beloved
Sweet Pea tradition, Bozeman’s own
Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. This
nationally recognized company will
perform Shakespeare’s delightfully witty
comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. The
fun continues Saturday with an original,
fully-costumed production entitled, The
Secret Life of Toys by the Kaleidoscope
Theater Players. Next, The Spontaneous
Combustibles will light up the stage with
their fast-paced, hilarious style of improv. The Equinox Theatre rounds
out Saturday’s offerings with a wonderful variety of performances,
including an original radio play that features a full cast and live music
and sound effects. On Sunday, watch Desert Adventures and Ancient
Treasures to see the amazing talent produced by Kaleidoscope Youth
Theater Camp. Sunday features more improvisational merriment
from the Spontaneous Combustibles, followed by the Silly Moose’s
zany brand of improv for children of all ages. Montana Shakespeare
in the Parks winds up the weekend with Shakespeare’s multi-faceted
romantic comedy, The Merchant of Venice.
Since 1993, Regina has been motivating and
inspiring audiences throughout the country
with a diverse repertoire of world stories,
folktales, myths, music, and personal stories
of her hometown, Clayton, New York. In
each story, Regina mixes mirth, music, and
everyday events into myths and muses about
life, death, and nothing in particular.
Regina’s voice can, at a moment’s notice, be
light as a feather or leap with sudden power.
Best of all is the sheer joy she communicates
in telling her tales. Regina is a nationally acclaimed performer and
educator and has received the Parents’ Choice Gold Award, the
Parent’s Guide to Children’s Media Award, and the Leonard Bernstein
Fellowship for Artists in Education.
Matt Baker Comedy and Stunt Show
Saturday 8/6 • 1pm • family stage
Sunday 8/7 • 1pm • family stage
Voted Seattle’s funniest prop comic, Matt
Baker doesn’t really know how he decided
to become a juggler, but he does know
that ever since he was a little kid, he’s
had a passion for making people laugh.
Imagine a job description that involves
spearing catapulting vegetables in mid-air
and juggling with your mouth. Matt has
performed in 14 different countries and
appeared on numerous television shows.
His show is action-packed with audience
participation and perpetual laughter.
Thank You JoAnn Brekhus!
2011 marked the close of JoAnn Brekhus’ 19 years
as Executive Director of the Sweet Pea Festival. We
greatly appreciate her steadfast dedication and
commitment to this important community event.

Celebrating Sweet Pea’s Roots and YOU—Our Sponsor!
The Sweet Pea Festival was created in 1978 by a group of approximately seventeen Bozemanites dedicated to staging a three-day arts festival. This gathering was meant to be a “celebration
of creativity” among area artists and the community. The group derived the Festival’s name
and some of the planned events from the Sweet Pea Carnivals that were held in Bozeman in
the early 1900s. Now in its 34th year, the Sweet Pea Festival remains true to its original vision of
celebrating the arts. From refusing corporate sponsorship to relying on over 1,500 volunteers to
make the Festival happen, Sweet Pea truly is your event!
