Why I Give Back… Brad Boyes
Y
ou may know Brad Boyes as #24, Right Wing for
the NHL Florida Panthers. Here at Toronto East
General we know Brad as a kind-hearted, generous
community member.

said Brad, who had shopped for 50 toys to brighten the
days of our youngest patients. Check out our website at
foundation.tegh.on.ca to hear more from Brad Boyes about
why he gives back.
Over the past few years, Brad has volunteered his time
at a number of our events. He joined us at our inaugural
Laughter is the Best Medicine comedy gala, has raced
hospital beds down the Danforth twice as part of the annual
Danforth Dash, and has signed autographs for fans to help
raise money during two past McHappy Days.
N
ew Diagnostic Assessment Units (DAUs) for Breast,
Colorectal and Chest have recently opened at
Toronto East General to provide expedited care for
patients who are suspected of having cancer. A win for both
residents and family physicians in this community, the new
DAUs are modelled on TEGH’s groundbreaking lung cancer
rapid diagnosis program (Time-to-Treat), which successfully
reduced the time from suspicion of lung cancer to diagnosis
and treatment by 71 per cent, and has become the standard
of care across Ontario.
DAUs are cost-effective for the hospital and excellent for
patient care. Patients referred to a DAU get additional
support and rapid access to diagnostic testing and specialist
doctors during a very stressful time in their lives. The entire
process takes place with the help of a clinical navigator who
During the 2012 holiday season, Brad, accompanied by his
wife, Elissa, and their daughter, Taylor, visited the Hospital
to donate his time and a large number of toys to the young
patients staying in the hospital over the holidays. “It was
something we wanted to do, make a donation to a hospital,”

helps guide patients through their journey, ensuring they
are well informed and their appointments are coordinated.
This means that the number of visits from presentation of
symptoms to final diagnosis is minimized and the sequence
of diagnostic visits takes place correctly.
Penny Walcott, Director of Surgery, says that “establishing
the TEGH DAUs was only possible due to the extraordinary
cooperation of many hospital departments including
Pathology and Diagnostic Imaging. All service areas rearrange
their schedules to ensure access to care for these patients.”
Family doctors in the community recently attended an
information session about the new DAUs and were
delighted to have access to this service close to home.

Joseph Neale | Grateful Patient Story
H
e’d never tried smoking, but when Joseph Neale was
20 years old, he was diagnosed with lung cancer. This
is his story about courage and the power of music.
“Thinking that I might either die or might not be able to sing,
it was just very hard for me,” remembers Joseph.
It was coughing fits that alerted the Toronto-based singer
and songwriter to get medical attention. They were so bad,
he couldn’t get through a sentence. “During a conversation,
I would have coughed at least 100 times. I would be
coughing between words and I couldn’t get a word out,”
Joseph recalls.
When Joseph first met with TEGH Chief of Surgery and
thoracic surgeon, Dr. Carmine Simone, he wanted to make
sure that he explored all of his options. Once he had all of
the answers to his satisfaction, he realized that surgery was
his best option.
“I think when I was with Dr. Simone that he probably looked
at me as a son, and let me know that if it were his son
he would do the surgery right now. At the end of it all, I
listened to him and I survived. He saved my life.“ Within
two months, as a cancer survivor, Joseph was already back
in studio making music.
We are immensely proud to announce that 100% of our
Hospital’s dedicated physicians have contributed to the
campaign. Each and every physician here at TEGH has
stepped forward to demonstrate his or her support of the
TEGH provided Joseph with the services, equipment
and testing needed to face this disease. Joseph credits
the compassionate and committed staff, cutting-edge
technology and innovative programs like the Chest
Diagnostic Assessment Unit for helping him beat cancer.
In a few days Joseph will be launching a special campaign
to raise funds for Toronto East General Hospital. Visit
foundation.tegh.on.ca/Joseph to watch Joseph’s touching
story and join our email list to be the first to hear about his
exciting campaign.

Gifts In Your Will
D
uring the next few months you may hear about and we hope you will take advantage of - one of
the free public education sessions that are part
of a wider national Leave A Legacy TM campaign. This
program is designed to inform members of the public on
the importance of leaving a charitable gift in their Wills.
It encourages all of us to stop and consider how we can
help make our communities a better place by leaving a
charitable gift in our Will and shows us how straightforward
this type of giving can be.
Legacies work wonders at our hospital. No matter what the
size, bequest gifts help us buy vital medical equipment
and enhance facilities. Over the past few years, gifts
through Wills have helped to purchase chemotherapy
treatment chairs, cardiology monitors, and mattresses in
Palliative Care. As well, they have allowed us to redecorate
and furnish the Intensive Care Waiting Room, Oncology
Treatments Rooms and build the new Paediatric Isolation
Room in the Stavro Critical Care Emergency Department.
None of this would have been possible without the help
of the men and women who so thoughtfully remembered
Toronto East General Hospital in their Wills.

Here at Toronto East General Hospital, we are privileged to
benefit from a long tradition of members of our community
donating through gifts in their Wills. In fact, the hospital’s
very beginnings were made possible, in part, as a result of
money contributed through an estate. During the campaign
to establish a hospital in east Toronto, led by Joseph H.
Harris, an East York MP, William McKay donated 1.5 acres
of farmland. A generous bequest from the Estate of William
Hill was used to purchase the additional land necessary to
make the dream of a community hospital a reality.
Now 85 years later, donations through estates continue to
be an important source of funds for our hospital. These
gifts come from people just like you, men and women
who support Toronto East General Hospital through regular
giving — people who want to do more but may want to
maintain current income and capital. A gift in your Will
allows you to do just this, while making a meaningful
contribution to the future of patient care at Toronto East
General. It allows you to create a Legacy of Health for
generations to come.
