During the 11:00 a.m. Traditional Worship Service the congregational hymns will be: “The God of Abraham Praise,” “Seek Ye First,” and “We Walk By Faith and Not By Sight.” The anthem “A Simple Song” from Mass, by Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), will be sung by Patti Wetzel, soprano. The offertory will be played by Dr. Michael Yenny Hymn Story Praise and Worship Contemporary Service – 9:00 a.m. “Shout to the Lord” "Shout to the Lord" is a worship anthem, written by singer/songwriter Darlene Zschech in 1993, published by Hillsong Music Australia. It has also been covered by other CCM artists including Kevin Jonas/Christ for the Nations, Carman, Don Moen, Rich Mullins, Matt Redman, Chris Tomlin, Michael W. Smith, Lincoln Brewster, John Tesh, Sandi Patty and Diante do Trono (Ana Paula Valadão) (Portuguese version "Aclame ao Senhor"). On 9 April 2008, "Shout to the Lord" was the closing song on Idol Gives Back, sung by the remaining eight contestants of American Idol and a gospel choir. The lyrics of the song were altered, changing the word "Jesus" to "Shepherd" in the first line, without the approval of Zschech or Hillsong Church. At the request of the song's publishers, the song was performed again at the opening of the next show the following night, this time using the original lyrics. The studio version of the performance charted at number 43 in the Billboard Hot 100, based on digital download sales alone. In 1998, the Brazilian band Diante do Trono, re-recorded Shout to the Lord in Portugese as Aclame ao Senhor on the album Diante do Trono. The Diante do Trono is the biggest worship ministry in Latin America, led by singer and pastor Ana Paula Valadão, who also re-recorded the album Shout to the Lord in Portuguese in 2000. The song is a hit in Brazil and worldwide. Traditional Worship – 11:00 a.m. The God of Abraham Praise Thomas Olivers was orphaned as a young child and grew up as what we would know today as a juvenile delinquent -- a boy headed for major trouble. Then one day he heard George Whitefield preach. How Olivers happened to be in attendance at a religious service, we have no idea -- but he was there. Whitefield was a stem-winding preacher, and he preached that day on the text from the prophet Zechariah, "Is not this man a brand plucked from the fire?" (Zechariah 3:1). The story behind that phrase is a conversation between God and Satan. The subject was Joshua, whom God had plucked from the fire. Joshua stood before the angel dressed in filthy clothes, but told Joshua, "See, I have taken your guilt away from you, and I will clothe you with festal apparel." When he heard that sermon, Olivers saw himself as that man dressed in filthy clothes -and he realized for the first time that there was hope for himself. He was converted that night, and became an evangelist serving under John Wesley. One day he happened to be worshiping in a Jewish synagogue in London -- we don't know how that happened either -- and heard Cantor Meyer Lyon sing a lovely song based on the thirteen articles of Jewish faith. He was so impressed that he went home and wrote our hymn, "The God of Abraham Praise" -- a song of praise to the God of Abraham -- the same God that we as Christians worship. In tribute to Cantor Lyon, Olivers named his hymn tune Leoni. They are of no certain age – as any and all women are welcome! The group meets each Tuesday at noon to study the Bible or other current Christian literature. It is designed to be completed in an hour so that women working outside the home may attend during the noon hour. You may bring your lunch. They are using Beth Moore’s book James: Mercy Triumphs. Childcare is available beginning at 11:45 a.m. Women’s In-Depth Bible Study (Conference Room) The Women’s In-depth Bible Study group meetings on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m., in the Conference Rm. This will insure your privacy while you pray. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” Matthew 18:20 A fun ministry we have that’s been going on for several years now, is our ministry to feed local high school students on Wednesdays during lunch. While any and all local high school students are welcome, we cater the time frame to Central High School. Most Wednesdays SAISD is in session beginning at 12:37 p.m., CHS students come and enjoy a delicious “free” lunch. Our Pastor Joel is going to add a more intentional spiritual component to the lunch time – feeding not only the students’ bodies, but their souls as well. If you would like to help feed our local high school students, please call the church office, 655-5694. It can be as elaborate as your preparing the meal, or as simple as picking up pizzas! Additionally, a financial donation may be made and we here at the church will take care of the details in providing the lunch! The church provides a salad, dessert and beverages. Ground Up meets Sundays at 5:00 in the Youth Center Youth Luncheons on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., in the Youth Center Upcoming Activities: The Middle School fellowship trip to the Great Escape in Gunnison, CO, will take place June 21 - 27. The Sr. High Mission Trip to Houston will take place July 6 - 11. If you are interested in these youth events please call Joel, 655-5694. CHILDREN’S MUSIC FOR PALM SUNDAY! We are planning to have a group of children – ages 3 through 5th grade – sing a song during the traditional service on Palm Sunday, April 13. Rehearsals will begin during the Sunday school hour – at 10:00 a.m. in Room 101. The upper elementary children are needed, to play the hand chimes. This Palm Sunday Children’s Choir will be under the direction of Yvonne Kappelmann and Julie Pucci. Please consider this special opportunity for your child – it will be a meaningful beginning to Holy Week 2014. VBS 2014 In just a little more than two months it will be time for VBS 2014! We can’t host VBS without our amazing volunteers—so, it’s that time again—time to sign-up to help lead the children of our church and community to a closer relationship with Jesus by volunteering for VBS! Weird Animals—Where Jesus’ Love is One-of-a-Kind from Group Publishing, will take place Sunday, June 1 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at our church Lake Lodge and then Monday, June 2 through Thursday, June 5 at our main church campus from 9:00 a.m. – noon. Many volunteers are needed to make the week a success! Thank you to four of our earliest volunteers – Laura Behrens, Morgan Moore, Julie Pucci and Janet Phillips – these ladies have come on board to help in a big way and we are very thankful. As always we need leaders for the many and varied stations – Sing & Play Stampede & the Tail End; Imagination Station, KidVid Cinema (formerly Chadder’s Theatre); Critter Café; Untamed Games; Spotlight VBS; Pre-School Bible Adventures & Missions, Pre-School KidVid Cinema; and Pre-School Craft & Play. Also, two directors are needed to lead the preschool portion of VBS. If you’ve done it before, you know it’s truly a fun-filled-Jesus loving four days! If you’ve never done it, make this the year you become a seasoned VBS volunteer – you won’t be sorry. Please call the church office, 655-5694 for more information or to volunteer. MISSION OPPORTUNITY: Another medical and construction mission trip to Guatemala is planned for July 20-27, 2014. We still need nurses to assist the doctors and individuals interested in helping in moderate and light construction work. The Helping Hands organization has identified low-income, elderly homeowners in the San Angelo community that are in much need of some home repair but are unable to do it themselves and have no family members available to help them. The Youth Program and the Mission/Service Outreach Committee are working together to form a team of youth and adults to participate in the Helping Hands Blitz Day which will be April 5. If you’d like to volunteer, please call Shawn Sellers, 655-5694 or Richard Crisp, 942-9696.
