PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER 06/03/15
At the end of the event, traditional
cookies and Ang Pau Packets were
distributed to all the children. The
event was a terrific success, greatly
enjoyed by one and all and ended this
festive season with great aplomb.
The School played host to a wide
variety of events provided by both our
own and other students on Monday, all
to celebrate the Chinese New Year
period drawing to a close.
During the entire Chinese New Year Period,
the School has been awash with red
lanterns, blossoms and other traditional
decorations (for which, many thanks to the
PTA New Year committee and Zamri and the
maintenance team for all their work).
A visit from SMK Chung Hua Miri
The whole School congregated in the
cafeteria on Monday afternoon to enjoy the
performances. Traditional music was
provided by the orchestra from SMK Chung
Hua Miri School, and this was matched by
singers from Years Five and Six under Ms
Ling’s leadership, showing what they have
learned in their Chinese lessons.
We also enjoyed a spectacular dance from
the student-run Lion Dance troupe,
featuring not one but two Lions and sets of
six of the traditional twenty-four drums.
The students adapted their usual routine,
spelling out ’Happy New Year’ in English so
all the TIS Miri students could understand
their message.
We are extremely grateful for the kind
sponsorship of the whole event by Mr
and Mrs James Ling and Mr and Mrs
Eric Que. The hard work of all the
parents and PTA committee which
went into the decorations, cookies and
gifts for all students is also appreciated
hugely. In particular, we must extend
particular thanks to both Sharon Ho
and Josephine Tan for their
organisation and coordinating of the
whole event in conjunction with the
PTA. It was enjoyed by one and all;
another excellent international event
for the whole community.

CURRICULUM FOCUS: GEOGRAPHY
Recently, students from Year Seven
have been out collecting data as
part of a unit on “Safer Roads”
within their geography studies.
The groups have conducted traffic and
pedestrian counts on the streets
immediately adjacent to the School as
well as assessing the quality of the
environment in and around our local
area. This will form part of a broader
study that Year Seven pupils are
completing on the School and local
environment. We look forward to
presenting the results of this and other
environmental studies which will be
presented to the wider community at an
open day later in the year. We also
hope to encourage more students in
their studies of geography; it will be
taught as a entirely separate lesson from
History from the start of the next
academic year, and, depending on
optional uptake, will also be offered as a
new IGCSE at the School from
September 2015.

NON-UNIFORM FRIDAY
On Friday, students arrived at
School in a wide variety of costumes
and apparel to raise funds for some
different causes.
Literary Characters around School
The Primary Students and Year Seven
were encouraged to celebrate the UK
date for World Book Day by dressing as
characters from the diverse world of
literature. The range on offer is vast,
and we were treated to some extremely
inventive costumes, some of which are
shown to the left. Each student paid 5
RM which will be shared amongst the
three local charities which we routinely
support.
Secondary Students from Year Eight and
above were given the option of wearing
their own ‘home clothes’ as part of the
drive by the Student Leaders to raise
money for the Secondary Prom
scheduled to be held at the end of the
year.
International World Book Day is set for
23 April this year, early on in Term
Three. On that date, the whole School
will be asked to come to School in
character. Planning is already
underway for the activities involved in
World Book Day, with storytelling and
the library at its heart.
