PREPARATION – ALL STYLES:
Note: RS = Right Side, RST = Right Sides Together, WS = Wrong Side, WST = Wrong Sides Together, WSU = Wrong Side Up
1. Press fabric and lining. (Do not press Stabilizer fabric.)
2. Choose desired view and note the required pattern pieces. Cut patterns on appropriate size lines. Note: When choosing
cutting lines, consider the width of your foot. For skinny feet, you can choose one size smaller. For wide feet, choose one size
larger.
3. Place lining and outer fabric RST. Pin pattern pieces to fabric, aligning arrows with fabric grain. Cut one set with each
pattern piece facing up. Mark dots and placement lines on RS of outer fabric with removable fabric marker. Unpin patterns
and flip toe pattern over so it is facing down. Pin, cut, and mark another set of each. Use a piece of masking tape to mark toes
as LEFT and RIGHT.
4. STABILIZER FABRIC: Fold stabilizer fabric in half widthwise, RST. Pin stabilizer toe and heel patterns to stabilizer, aligning
arrow with fabric grain, and cut out. Center stabilizer pieces on WS of outer fabric of toes and heels. Fuse stabilizer following
package instructions.

FLATS – Series One – INSTRUCTIONS
VIEW A – Espadrilles with connected sides and open toe
1. Follow PREPARATION – ALL STYLES, steps 1 – 4, using
pattern pieces 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Mark center back of heel
and dart as in Preparation, Step 3.
6. Trim seam allowance of heel and toe diagonally at
corners. Trim seam allowance to 1/8”. Do not trim seam
allowance at opening.
2. TOE: Pin lining to outer fabric, RST. Stitch 3/8” seam
around edges, leaving 2” opening on one side about ¾”
from wide end.
6
2
3. HEEL: Fold heel RST along center back line. Stitch dart
from top to point. Use scissors to cut the dart down the
center to within 1/2” of the point of the dart. Press the
dart open. Repeat for heel lining.

7. Turn RS out; use point turner to gently push out corners
and shape curved seams. Fold seam allowance of
unstitched openings to inside. Press edges.
7
4. Optional HEEL BAND: Press the long edges of the heel
band ¼” to the wrong side. Center the pressed piece WS
down over the dot on the RS, at the center of the heel.
Stitch to bottom edge of heel only.
4
8. For Optional Band: pin band to center back line of heel.
Fold top edge of band down about 7/8” so top end is
looped and cut end extends about 3/8” below top edge
of heel. Tuck cut edge of band between heel and band.
Topstitch edges of band to heel. Then topstitch
completely around toe and heel, ¼” from edge, crossing
the band to secure.
8
5. HEEL: Follow Step 2, leaving a 2” opening just past the
center bottom of the heel so band can hang through
opening. Do not catch loose end of band in stitching.
5
9. Place toes lining side up. Use ruler to mark a line 1/2”
from and parallel to, the wide curved edge of each toe
piece. This is your overlap guideline.

VIEW C – Sandal
1. Follow Step 1, View A using pattern pieces 2, 3, 8 and 9.
2. TOE: Follow Step 2, View A.
2
3
3. HEEL: Mark strap placement and dots as in Preparation,
Step 3 on RS of heels outer fabric and lining.
4. Staystitch each heel outer fabric and lining piece
between dots on the lower curve of the heel. Clip the
seam allowance every 3/8” to, but not through, the
stitched line. Press the clipped edge toward the WS
along the stitched line.
4
7. On RS of heel outer fabric, position strap (or ribbon)
between marks on left side of heel. Pin in place following angle of marked lines and baste at seam line. Pin
buckle (or second piece of ribbon), WSU, between
marks on right side of heel. Elastic and strap or ribbon
ends will extend into seam allowance. Baste. Repeat for
second heel, switching strap and buckle positions.
Buckle goes on outside of shoe. Use a piece of masking
tape to mark heels as LEFT and RIGHT.
7
8. Pin lining to heel outer fabric, RST. Stitch 3/8” seam
around edges, leaving staystitched bottom curve open
to turn. Straps or ribbon should extend through opening. Trim seam allowance diagonally at corners. Trim
seam allowance to 1/8”. Do not trim the ends of the
ribbon or straps. Do not trim the seam allowance at
staystitched edge.
Do not trim straps
5. Shoes can be secured to the ankle with ribbon ties or a
strap and buckle. For RIBBON, cut 2 pieces of 3/8” wide
grosgrain ribbon 27” long. Position as in Step 7 and
baste at seam line. For STRAP and BUCKLE: Cut two
3/8” x 12” strips of vinyl. Lay on top of each other, WST.
(Wash Away™ Wonder Tape is a great tool for holding
the pieces together.) Stitch along both edges to secure.
Cut a 2-1/2” piece of 3/8” braided elastic. Fold in half,
matching up short ends. Make a very small clip in the
center of the elastic. Unfold elastic and loop over center
bar of buckle, inserting prong through hole in elastic.
Bring ends of elastic together and baste.

8
9. Follow Step 6, View A
for toe pieces.
9
10. Follow Step 7, View A. Press edges, being careful not to
touch vinyl strap with hot iron.
10
6. Repeat Step 5 to create a second set of ribbon ties or
straps and buckles.

STITCHING TO SOLE
NOTE: Stitching instructions are written and illustrated
for a right handed sewer. For left hand stitching, hold
shoe in right hand and stitch around shoe sections in
the opposite direction while holding yarn to the right of
each stitch.
1. Cut yarn to a length required by chosen view. Pull
through yarn wax several times. (TIP: Press waxed yarn
to help make it even smoother.) Thread needle and knot
one end. Trim excess yarn close to knot.
2. Start each section with a double Whipstitch at heel or
toe corner. View A: Start stitching at the open toe
corner. (For View A no added whipstitch is needed at
joined sections.) Views B and C: Start stitching at a
corner of any shoe section. To start, insert needle into
jute ¼” down from edge of sole, and then up through
fabric about ¼” from edge. (Use topstitching as a guide
while stitching shoe pieces.) Pull yarn sharply to snug
knot into jute.
2
5
FLATS – Series One – INSTRUCTIONS
3. Make a whipstitch by inserting the needle back into the
jute below the knot and coming up at the first stitch.
4. Make a second whipstitch right next to the first one.
3
4
6. To finish off the yarn, take your last stitch in the corner
of the shoe section. Insert the needle down into the
fabric on the opposite side of the last stitch, coming out
below that stitch.
7. Make 1 whipstitch by inserting the needle back into the
fabric right next to that last stitch.
6
5. Continue with a Blanket Stitch. To do this: hold yarn to
left (away from the stitch) and in the direction of stitching. Move over ¼” and take a second stitch, coming up
within loop of yarn. Sharply pull yarn to secure the
stitch. Hold previous stitch in place with free hand,
while taking next stitch. This is a blanket stitch. Continue to pull yarn tightly while stitching around shoe
pieces. (TIP: To help avoid tangles allow yarn and
needle to dangle after every few stitches.)
5
7
8. Take a small stitch around the blanket and whipstitch.
9. Pass needle back through the stitch loop. Pull yarn
tightly.
