Produced by: Bud Wilfore Retiring from Yancey After 23 Years of Service Bud Wilfore, Yancey Bros. Co.’s Chief Operating Officer, recently advised the company’s Board of Directors’s of his plans to retire at the end of January, 2012. Wilfore began his Caterpillar Dealer career in 1974 as a Management Trainee at Carter Machinery Company, the Caterpillar Dealer for Virginia and Southeastern West Virginia. He joined Yancey in 1989 as General Sales Manager. After four years, he was promoted to Vice President. He was named chief operating officer with responsibility for total company operations in 2006. During his time with Yancey, Bud led several key acquisitions including the purchase of The Carlton Company, which expanded Yancey’s Caterpillar territory to encompass the entire state of Georgia, and Pioneer Machinery, resulting in a complete line of Caterpillar and Prentice forest products. Bud also directed the launch of the Cat Rental Store and Building Construction Products Division in 1999. On his pending retirement, Wilfore commented, “It is with both excitement and sadness that I am announcing my decision to retire at the end of January. It goes without saying that recent years have been difficult on everyone. However, I believe the worst is behind us and most importantly, I will be leaving behind a team fully capable of handling whatever challenges and opportunities the future may hold. At the same time, it saddens me to know I will be leaving behind a family of business friends, employees and customers, who have made this such an enjoyable and rewarding career.” Jim Stephenson, Yancey Bros. Co. President and CEO, reflected on his time with Bud. “In the 97 year history of Yancey Bros. Co., it would be hard to name anyone whose contributions have been more consequential in the growth and success of our great company. Bud has been a great partner for me in the leadership of Yancey Bros. Co. and though he will surely be missed, he has well earned a long and happy retirement. I am also glad to announce that he will continue to serve Yancey Bros. Co. as a member of our Board of Directors. I do believe he leaves us with a team in place that will carry us to yet new levels of exceptional performance.” “Following Wilfore’s departure, Trey Googe, Vice President, Machine Sales, will be promoted to the position of Machine Division General Manager. He will be joined by Eric Arnold, Engine Division Vice President and General Manager, and Marshall Ford, Vice President And Chief Financial Officer. These three experienced leaders will report directly to me and provide the direction for the entire Team Yancey to ensure that we continue to deliver on our company mission, ‘Serve, Solve, Succeed.’” Marshall Ford joined Yancey Bros. Co. in 2010 as Chief Financial Officer. In addition to the corporate finance office, his responsibilities include Information Technology, Human Resources and Credit departments. Prior to joining the company, Marshall was Executive Vice-President Finance with Sage Software, Director of Finance with Deere & Co. and Manager, at KPMG, Atlanta. He is a CPA and a graduate of Tulane University. Marshall, his wife, Nancey, and their four children, reside in Atlanta. Trey Googe has been with Yancey since 2007 and currently serves as Vice President, Machine Sales, with responsibility for the company’s Machine Division Sales activities, as well as Corporate Marketing. Trey also serves as the company Strategy Champion. Prior to his current responsibilities, he had management responsibility for General Construction, which included The Cat Rental Store and Caterpillar compact machine business. He began his career as an attorney with King and Spalding, then worked in investment banking with Robinson-Humphrey and Robertson Stephens focusing on mergers and acquisitions. Trey is a native of Tifton, Ga., and graduated from both the Terry College of Business and law school at the University of Georgia. Trey and his wife, Lesee, live in Atlanta with their three children. Eric Arnold has had responsibility for all Engine Division businesses since joining Yancey Bros. Co. four years ago. In addition to the traditional Caterpillar Power Systems business, he has responsibility for Yancey Engineered Solutions (Generator-set packaging and testing services), Blue Bird Bus Sales and Service, and International Truck Sales and product support operations. Prior to joining the company, Eric was with Caterpillar Inc. for 16 years with field sales responsibilities in Europe. Later, he was responsible for the North American Perkins distribution network and was Manager for Caterpillar’s On-Highway Truck Engine business in the Southeast. He is a CPA and a graduate of Eastern Illinois University. He and his wife, Melanie, have three children and reside in Cobb County. Bud Wilfore Marshall Ford Trey Googe Eric Arnold 80,000 Hours and Still Going Strong! 330 Lee Industrial Blvd. Austell, GA 30168 PAID PRSRT STD U.S. Postage Permit No. 68 Wichita, Ks In 1984 Donald Evans purchased a new Caterpillar 973 from Yancey Bros. Co. to use for loading dirt and clearing land. Thirtyseven years later that loader has passed the 80,000 hour mark and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Since he started his business in 1976, Donald Evans has been a Caterpillar user beginning with his very first machine, a Caterpillar 977 Track Loader. His fleet has grown over the years to more than 40 machines used primarily for demolition and land clearing in the Rome, Georgia area. His diligent maintenance practices have resulted in very long lives for much of his equipment, highlighted by his prized 973. “We have used that loader for just about everything over the years and it just keeps on going. It’s been rebuilt four times and I know we have replaced the undercarriage at least six times. We’ve ordered parts for that machine that Cat had never even sold before because they hadn’t seen one wear out,” said Donald. As remarkable as the performance of the machine has been, equally remarkable is the fact that one operator, Harvey Poole, has been responsible for putting 98% of those hours on the machine. “Harvey and that loader just came together. People would wait on Harvey if they needed work done because he was so good at working that machine. He could do things with it that I haven’t seen many others do. He could do finish grading with it simply by looking at the tracks to see if he was level. He’d run it on debris piles and The 80,000-hour 973 Track Loader along with (L-R) Donald Evans, Donnie Nixon, and Bob Smallwood of Evans Construction Company, Silver Creek, GA. slopes that most people wouldn’t go on. It’s always been impressive to watch him working.” No original sheet metal remains. There are fingerprints etched into the controls and knobs. There is nothing original on it other than the frame. And it is out working in the northwest Georgia area as you read this. So when you hear “Built to be Rebuilt”, there is no better example than Donald Evans’ 973. www.YanceyBros.com Safety First! Page 3 Caterpillar Earthmoving Machines are Designed, Engineered and “Built to Be Rebuilt” A Cat machine is the best investment in productivity you can make and there is a way to improve it – a Cat Certified or Yancey Rebuild. When most competitive models would require replacement, Cat equipment can be rebuilt to deliver a cost-effective “second life.” Cat machines are “built to be rebuilt.” Yancey offers three rebuild programs: Cat Certified Rebuilds The entire machine is rebuilt from the bare frame up (including the power train). Cat Certified Power Train Rebuilds A complete rebuild of the power train. Yancey Custom Rebuilds The rebuild is customized to suit your particular needs – includes a Certified Power Train Rebuild in addition to any other components you choose to include. Like New Each rebuild offered by Yancey Bros. Co. incorporates the very latest critical engineering updates into your machine at a fraction “Before” and “After” shots of a D7H operated by Advanced Disposal. This tractor underwent a Yancey Custom of the cost of buying a new machine. Rebuild in Yancey’s Austell Machine Service Center in 2011. This custom-tailored rebuild gave Advanced Disposal a landfill machine with a “second life” after a 9,900-hour “first life”. Cat Certified Rebuilds undergo a thorough evaluation, including more than 350 tests and inspections and the automatic replacement of approximately 7,000 parts. Upon completion of the Cat Certified Rebuild your machine will receive a new serial number from Caterpillar that recognizes it as a “new” machine. Yancey Rebuilds and Certified Power Train Rebuilds include over 200 tests and inspections of power train components and replacement or reconditioning of 3,000 parts. This can eliminate small repairs on older machines, saving you both money and downtime. This 826G Compactor, owned and operated by the Toombs County Public Works Department, was rebuilt this Spring in Yancey’s Statesboro Machine Service Center. Certified Power Train Rebuilds give customers “like new” performance, an extended warranty on the power train, and a lower operating cost-per-hour than other alternatives. Warranty The rebuild program doesn’t end with the rebuild process. The value of your machine is further increased with parts warranties and extended power train coverage. Choose from a 3-year/5,000 service hour option or a 3-year/6,000 service hour option. For large mining equipment a 2-year/10,000 service hour option is also available on rebuilt machines. Special Financing There has never been a better time to rebuild your Cat equipment. Take advantage of special financing available through Cat Access including 0% interest on select major components. Contact your Yancey Product Support Specialist or the Service Manager at your nearest Yancey Service Center today to find out how you can experience the benefits from a Cat Certified, Cat Power Train, or a Yancey Custom Rebuild. Why You Should Choose a Caterpillar Certified Powertrain Rebuild from Yancey The simple facts are that before failure repairs are predictable, while after failure repairs are avoidable and expensive. It’s a question of knowing and understanding the repair indicators. There are two types of repair indicators — planned and problem. Problem indicators such as metal filings on a magnetic plug, slippage, over heating and excessive oil consumption indicate an impending, costly after failure repair. Planned indicators are more difficult to see and obey, however, they have the greatest impact on lowering your operating costs and avoiding the unwanted storm! They include S.O.S. (Scheduled Oil Sampling) results, coolant analysis results, fuel consumption and service hours. One option to consider when following planned indicators is the Caterpillar® Certified Power Train Rebuild Program. The Caterpillar Certified Power Train Rebuild Program offers a second power train life for your Cat construction equipment. The program covers the radiator, engine, transmission, torque converter, transfer gear box, universal joints and drive shafts, differentials, final drives, brakes, power train electrical switches, sensors and sending units. All power train electronic control modules and software and new engine wiring harness are also covered. The program also includes incorporating all critical engineering updates and improvements and restores the power train to like new performance and productivity. It all starts with a complete power train inspection. Then the power train is completely disassembled and rebuilt. A Caterpillar Certified Powertrain Rebuild Includes: • Clean and inspect machine. • Lift and block machine. • Remove cab, tin wear, air intake system, radiator, engine, transmission, torque converter and transfer gear box. • Remove front and rear axle groups. • Supply and install exchange engine, transmission, torque and transfer gear box. • Reseal transmission control valve and replace solenoid valve groups. • Reseal transmission selector valve. • Rebearing and resealing transmission oil pump. • Reseal torque converter valve groups. • Rebearing and reseal axle groups using all new bearings, seals, thrust washers, locks, shims and duo cone wheel seals. • Rebearing and resealing differentials (excludes discs and plates in limited slip differentials). • Rebearing rear oscillating axle unit. • Rebearing and reseal drive shaft slip joint. • Replace all universal joints with new. • Recondition service brake assemblies including new friction discs and plates. • Reseal service brakes and control valve. • Reseal brake accumulator and valve. • Rebearing and reseal parking brake. • Replace parking brake cable with new. • Replace all brake hoses with new. • Replace engine and transmission wiring harness with new. • Replace all power train related sensors and switches with new. • Replace all power train oil hoses with new. • Clean, flush and reseal radiator. • Clean, flush and reseal hydraulic oilcooler. • Replace all radiator hoses. • Replace transmission oil cooler with exchange. Atumn 2011 New Articulated Trucks Feature More Powerful Engines B-Series Articulated Trucks Caterpillar’s new B Series Articulated Trucks now include the 735B, offering a 36-ton payload, the 740B with its 43.5-ton payload, and the 740B EJ with popular ejector body, carrying a 42-ton payload. Both configurations feature revised transmission and traction control systems that enable higher productivity. The new trucks also focus on reducing driver effort and cutting operator fatigue through improved cab design. Reduced exhaust emissions Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB The three B Series trucks will be available with Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB certified Cat® diesel engines. These systems produce 90% less particulate matter (PM) and reduce nitrous oxides (NOx) emissions by as much as 50 percent. Emissions controls include a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to trap soot. The necessary process of removing the soot is called regeneration. The “on-the-go” regeneration system allows the regeneration to take place without operator intervention and without sacrificing working time. Optimized drive train Caterpillar has further improved its sixwheel-drive system. A new, fully proportional torque-distribution automatic traction control (ATC) system eliminates the need for any driver intervention to maintain maximum traction in difficult operating conditions. The automatic system leaves the operator free to concentrate on driving the truck, without having to think about how to gain the best traction in different ground conditions. The new proportional ATC system works in harmony with the hydraulic steering system—without compromise in tight turning maneuvers. The combination of increased engine power, improved transmission and proportional ATC results in improvements in machine and operator efficiency, cutting cycle times and boosting productivity. Smoother gear changing and reduced operator stress also improves overall operator satisfaction and comfort throughout the working shift. Improved operator environment The B Series trucks are designed and built around the operator. Behind the tough exterior, with its powerful new styling, integrated heavy-duty bumper and fully enclosed belly guards, the Cat truck offers the ideal operator environment. A new injection molded dash panel with revised trim provides an improved fit and a more aesthetically pleasing working environment. The redesigned instrument cluster and fully customizable Color Multi-Purpose Display (CMPD) give the operator all of the information needed. Machine monitoring includes information as diverse as regeneration status, fuel levels, autolube status, load count and major component temperatures. The CMPD also incorporates a live feed from the rear view camera, which is automatically engaged when reverse gear is selected. Page 5 Caterpillar Introduces Two New Asphalt Pavers AP1000E and AP1055E Asphalt Pavers Caterpillar’s new AP1000E and AP1055E asphalt pavers are the newest additions to the paving products machine family. Excellent mobility, superb visibility, powerful C7.1 or C6.6 engine with ACERT™ Technology, and comfortable operating environment are just some of the features that you can expect from these new asphalt pavers. Engine In markets that require U.S. EPA Tier 4 Interim standards, the AP1000E and AP1055E will feature a Cat® C7.1 engine with ACERT Technology, while machines that are only required to meet U.S. EPA Tier 3 standards come equipped with the Cat C6.6 engine with ACERT Technology. Both engines deliver 225 hp of power. The Cat C7.1 engine utilizes the building blocks of ACERT technology including the Cat NOx Reduction System and Cat Clean Emissions Module in order to comply with Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emission standards. This innovative combination yields extremely clean combustion and continues to deliver steady power in all operating conditions with outstanding fuel efficiency. A top-mounted cooling system with high ambient temperature capability provides cool intake air in order to maximize fuel efficiency and minimize emissions. Exhaust air exits toward the hopper providing a cool engine compartment and cleaner working environment for the crew. Operator Environment Dual swing-out stations, tilting consoles and low profile design of the cooling system provide good forward visibility that enables the operator to communicate effectively with the truck driver while monitoring mix in the hopper. The Advisor Monitoring System located on the left operating station provides an interactive, text-based interface to assist the operator. It is available in multiple languages for today’s diverse paving crews. The system includes fuel saving features including engine speed control that automatically adjusts engine rpm when the propel lever moves to and from neutral. An eco-mode feature also conserves fuel by lowering the engine speed to 1650 rpm when less demanding operating conditions exist. The display provides project-planning calculators, start-up checklist, engine operating conditions, and service code information that can also be easily accessed for quick problem-solving capability. Undercarriage The highly reliable Mobil-Trac undercarriage on the AP1055E provides excellent flotation and limits disturbance on soft base materials, ensuring uniform mat thickness. The Mobil-Trac undercarriage can be equipped with one of two belt designs. The tread-bar design provides better traction when grade conditions are soft, while the smooth belt provides more contact surface for good performance when pushing trucks and less base disruption when turning. Material Handling & Operations Mobility and consistent speeds are keys to efficient paving operations. The Cat system is equipped with three propel/ steering modes: PAVE, TRAVEL and MANEUVER. The PAVE mode enables the automatics for mix delivery, while the TRAVEL mode maximizes speed. When operating in MANEUVER mode, the AP1055E enables the machine to rotate within its own footprint, while the AP1000E permits an inside turning radius of 1.5 ft for superb mobility in confined areas. The material handling system is the most advanced in the paving industry. Automated controls and welldesigned components reduce segregation potential and maximize efficiency for higher mat quality. The system can be equipped with a two sonic sensor design or four sonic sensor design; depending on customer preference. Each of these systems signal the augers and conveyors to run faster or slower when changing paving widths, thus keeping the head of material at the set level. When paving around obstacles the system automatically makes the necessary adjustments for uniform delivery. Cat asphalt pavers can be equipped with the Cat Grade and Slope system. The system is factory-integrated and removes irregularities from the surface while controlling mat thickness for increased production, lower operating costs, and higher profitability. It is entirely supported by Caterpillar; ensuring the grade control system and paver are setup to optimize performance and meet job site requirements. The engine is also capable of meeting future U.S. EPA Tier III marine exhaust emissions requirements. Reduced engine noise is achieved through innovative design in the two-piece CGI cylinder block. The High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system also provides quieter performance through the pilot injection of fuel. “Vessel owners will immediately notice the quieter performance of the C6.4 due to significant reductions in gear train and valve noise as well as the addition of the HPCR fuel system,” noted Tony Pattle, Marine Products Engineering Manager. The new engine model will be manufactured in the Wimborne Marine Power Center, located in Wimborne, United Kingdom. Standard equipment on the C6.4 includes a built-in oil cooler, centrifugal water pump, self-priming sea water pump, low profile oil pan, top access to service oil level and oil fill locations as well as a single Cat heavy-duty spin-on high efficiency oil filter. The engine is equipped with an automatic fuel priming pump, 12V DC electric accessories and a solid-mounted Cat 70-pin electric plug-in connector for yacht control harness. The new C6.4 is fully compatible with the Cat Multi-Station Control System (MSCS) and MSCS II components for shift and throttle integration and Cat helm displays, including the Color Marine Power Display (CMPD).
