GARRETT Major General Garrett is a former NROTC student and 1978 graduate of the University of Washington, where she received her B.A. in English. She was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in June 1978. Upon completion of the Basic School, as well as her occupational specialty school, she served on active duty with the 1st Marine Division through June of 1981. On 1 November 2011, the newly forming Force Headquarters Group (FHG), Marine Forces Reserve, reached its Initial Operational Capability (IOC). At this time, MajGen Garrett assumed her duties as Commanding General, Force Headquarters Group, pending publication of the Marine Corps Bulletin 5400 required for establishment of the FHG. Her duties as Commanding General, Force Headquarters Group, will become official during a forecasted timeframe in Spring 2012. MajGen Garrett is a graduate of the Reserve Amphibious Warfare Course, Reserve Command and Staff SERGEANT MAJOR MICHEAL P. BARRETT Micheal P. Barrett was born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and raised in Youngstown, N.Y. He enlisted in March 1981 and underwent recruit training at 2nd Recruit Training Battalion, Delta Company, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. December 2009, he assumed the duties as I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) Sergeant Major, and deployed to Operation Enduring Freedom (10.1/10.2) in March 2010. During this deployment, he also became the NATO Regional Command (Southwest) Command Sergeant Major for Nimruz and Helmand Province, Afghanistan. He turned over the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) and Regional Command (Southwest) in March and April 2011. Sergeant Major Barrett assumed his current post as the 17th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps on 9 June 2011. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal with combat ‘V’ and gold star, Meritorious Service Medal with gold star, Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with combat ‘V’ and three gold stars, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal with two gold stars, Combat Action Ribbon with gold star, and the Presidential Service Badge. SERGEANT MAJOR BILL SKILES William Skiles entered the Marine Corps in 1979 with the MOS 0351. ship/Sniper Instructor for the Royal Marines in England. In 2003, First Sergeant Skiles joined 2/1 and deployed in 2004 to Fallujah, Iraq with Echo Company. He was selected to his present rank later that year and was assigned to HMLA-267 Cobra and Huey Squadron at Camp Pendleton, California. In 2007, Sergeant Major Skiles was transferred to Weapons Training Battalion, Quantico, Virginia. In 2010, he assumed his post as the Sergeant Major of Marine M A RI N E C O RPS S PE A KE RS Course, Reserve Intelligence Officers Course and the Advanced Logistics Officers Course. In 1997-1998, she attended the Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island as a full time student and received her master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. U N I T E D I N S E R V I C E : O U R G L O B A L I M PA C T MAJOR GENERAL ANGELA SALINAS Major General Angela Salinas began her military career when she enlisted into the Marine Corps in May 1974. In June 1989, Major General Salinas assumed command of Recruiting Station Charleston and became the first woman in the Marine Corps to command a recruiting station. In June 1992, she became the first woman assigned as a combat service support ground monitor responsible for the assignments of over 1000 senior officers. She was the first female assigned as a plans and policy officer for a major combatant command in 1999, and in May 2001 when she assumed command of the 12th Marine Corps District, became the first woman to serve as a recruiting district commanding officer. She is the first woman to command the Marine Corps Recruit Depot/Western Recruiting Region in San Diego, CA. Major General Salinas is a 1976 graduate of Dominican College of San Rafael, CA, where she received her B.A. in history. She received her Master’s from the Naval War College in 1992. She is a graduate of the Amphibious Warfare School, the Naval War College’s Command and Staff College and the Army War College. 19 Corps University. Sergeant Major Skiles’ personal decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat ‘V’, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 gold stars, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat ‘V’ with 1 Gold Star, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal and Rifle and Pistol Distinguished Marksman Badges. MASTER SERGEANT BONNIE DIAZ Master Sergeant Bonnie Diaz was born in Weslaco, Texas, graduated from Allegan High School and immediately joined the United States Marine Corps in July 1993. Upon graduation, she attended the Basic Automotive Mechanic and Advanced Automotive Mechanic Schools. In February 2008, she deployed to Al Taqaddum, Iraq. She was selected to lead a first ever mission as a maintenance support team in Basrah, Iraq, in successful support of the First Iraqi Army Division Military Transition Teams. In September 2008, she returned from deployment and was redeployed in May 2009 to Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, where she assumed duties as a Maintenance Chief and Staff Noncommissioned Officer in Charge. Her section was responsible for establishing a first ever motor transport maintenance support team in Forward Operating Bases Deleram and Dweyer then a robust motor transport maintenance section in Camp Leatherneck in support of the Area of Operations. In January 2010, she received orders to Marine Corps University, Enlisted Professional Military Education where she assumed duties as a Coach for the Faculty Advisors Course and the Leadership Functional Area Manager for enlisted Marines. She also assumed duties as Director Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Marine Corps Base Hawaii. She currently is working on transforming the SNCOA leadership continuum for enlisted Marines. 20 DR. PAOLO G. TRIPODI, PhD Paolo Tripodi is Professor of Ethics and Ethics Branch Head at the Lejeune Leadership Institute, Marine Corps University, MCU. Dr. Tripodi trained as an infantry officer and received his commission with the Italian Carabinieri upon graduation from the School of Infantry and Cavalry in Cesano, and the Carabinieri Officers School in Rome, Italy. Dr. Tripodi is the author of several refereed articles some of which were published in “The Journal of Military Ethics”, “International Journal on World Peace”, “Small Wars and Insurgencies”among others. Dr. Tripodi’s chapters have appeared in several books. His most recent chapter ‘Understanding Atrocities and What Commanders can do to Prevent Them’ was published in 2010. He is currently co-editing a book “Aspects of Leadership: Ethics, Law and Spirituality” with USMC Lt. Col. Connelley. Dr. Tripodi is a graduate in Political Science, University of Messina, Italy. He holds a post graduate diploma in journalism from the Free University of International Social Studies, Rome, Italy. He holds a MA in International Relations from University of Kent at Canterbury, UK, and a Ph.D. in International Relations from the Nottingham Trent University, UK.
