swwoc KEHILATH ISRAEL’S Vol. 46, Issue 11 November 2010 When I was a child there was a tremendous uproar when a Jewish columnist and TV personality by the name of Clifton Fadiman either sued or threatened to sue a newspaper when they referred to him as being a renowned “Jewish” commentator and journalist. He was offended by being referred to as being a Jew. There was a tremendous outcry from the entire Jewish community and it became the topic of every talk show and newspaper article. Generally, Jews today are much more proud of their heritage than apparently he was. However, from time to time people still do not respect their own tradition and in a recent example we saw kind of “what goes around comes around” occur to one such individual. Now we know for a fact that there is a G-d in this world! And how do we know? Because of the results of a baseball game played by the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies on Kol Nidre night. It was on Kol Nidre night of this year that Jason Marquis was scheduled to pitch for the Nationals. Marquis gets paid about $7 1/2 million a year to pitch for the Washington Nationals. Marquis also happens to be Jewish. And here it was Kol Nidre night — the holiest night of the year. Would he pitch? Should he pitch? This would not have been much of a question before 1965. It was in 1965 when the opening game of the World Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Minnesota Twins took place. And scheduled to pitch that opening game was Sandy Koufax. That year he had won 26 games and struck out 382 batters; breaking the major league record. That year he had pitched a perfect game; the fourth no-hitter of his career. That year he won the Cy Young Award for the third consecutive year - an unprecedented event as the best pitcher in baseball. That year Sandy Koufax changed the course of American Jewish history. That year the first game of the World Series came out on Yom Kippur day. And Sandy Koufax, a Jew, chose not to pitch. He went to shul instead. I kid you not when I say that day in 1965 was a major moment in American Jewish history. That was before Jews had become part of the American mainstream. That was at a time when Jews were hiding their Jewish identity in order to be accepted. That was a time when you were a Jew at home, but an American in public. That was a time when Jews found it best not to draw attention to themselves as Jews. Along came Sandy Koufax, the Jewish kid from Borough Park, Brooklyn, and announced to all the world: I’m not pitching ... it is Yom Kippur, my holy day. And nothing has ever been the same! In October of 2004, when the star Dodger baseball player named Shawn Green, who is also Jewish — what else could he be with a name like “Shawn” — confronted a similar decision when his team was playing for the pennant and the game came out on Yom continued on page 6 Cheshvan-Kislev 5771 As we enter November, I realize that this year has gone by more quickly than I ever imagined. Although we have shared many experiences, challenges, and accomplishments, there is still much to be done. I must again compliment and thank both Randi Haith and Cindy Singer for the extraordinary job they have done on the Centennial Ad Book. November 6th is Grand Givers, our largest single annual fundraiser. I know this year will be exceptional. Bonnie Siegel, our Grand Givers Chairperson, will transform our synagogue, not only for K.I. members but for the entire community. This magical mystery tour will be a night to remember. I hope to see everyone there. I want to thank Bonnie Siegel and Steve Osman for the months of hard work. It is deeply appreciated by our entire congregation. We are moving forward on our work with governance; on November 4th our board will be meeting to review a new set of proposed bylaws. Howard Jacobson and his committee have worked for almost two years to bring to our board new governance that will help K.I. to be stronger as a board and as a congregation in the years to come. This was not an easy process, and I would like to express our deep thanks to Howard and everyone on his committee for all of their time and effort. After reviewing the bylaws, we will meet in December to vote on the final document. In the area of board development, the board will begin a process chaired by Karen Pack, starting at our next meeting on the 4th. That will be followed by a retreat set for mid-December. Alan Edelman, Associate Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Greater KC will help lead this process along with other professionals in our community. The Strategic Planning Chairs, Ellen Portnoy and Geoff Friedman are working to create a strong foundation for moving forward. Geoff is continuing in the area of finance, efficiency, and transparency with David Stallings. In a first step, Ellen and her committee have created a survey and will be sending it out to the congregation. It is very important that everyone return their completed survey within the time frame they have requested. December 4th, 5th, and 6th, you will be able to enjoy “A Tree continued on page 6 WHAT’S INSIDE Shabbat Schedule.......................................................................2 Cantor Shron’s Message............................................................2 Anniversaries..............................................................................4 Birthdays.....................................................................................4 Memorial Tablets......................................................................11 Donations...................................................................................12 November Calendar..................................................................15 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5 Candlelighting*......................................................5:56 P.M. It’s a time when many families gather together around the dinner table saying what they are most thankful for, recalling the many fond memories of the past and then ingest an obscene amount of calories. Most people express their thanks for their loving family and friends, for their good health, for the good food that they are about to eat, for being able to live in this great country and for all that’s good in their lives. For sure, these sentiments of gratitude are heartfelt, but are seldom directed to the source of all our blessings, to G-d. That is why our Sages wisely incorporated expressions of gratitude to G-d into our daily prayers. We’ve all heard of the expression “count your blessings.” This is exactly what was prescribed for us to do on a daily basis. However, our attention is directed to the blessings that most people take for granted. For instance, when we wake up in the morning we are instructed to thank G-d for allowing us to wake up. After all, in this country, a person dies every twelve seconds. The fact that we were not that person and we woke up should be reason enough to express our gratitude to G-d. There are over forty million people in this country that live below the poverty level, twenty-one million who are blind and eight million who are deaf. If we are not one of them, how can we not thank G-d. Therefore, we have a series of fifteen morning blessings of gratitude thanking our Creator from making us Jewish, giving us freedom, providing our sight and hearing, giving us the ability to stand up and walk, providing our sustenance, and instilling our creativity to choosing us for His divine mission. All of these expressions of gratitude are meant to make us recognize all of the blessings and miracles that we are granted on a daily basis. We are given the opportunity to celebrate life every day and not just annually. Other ways that we can express our gratitude on a daily basis is by reciting a b’racha (blessing) whenever we eat or drink, whenever we go to the bathroom, at special times in our lives, for holding a newborn baby for the first time, whenever the Chiefs or Royals win a game, and even at sad times in our lives. Reciting b’rachot gives us the awareness that life is so fragile and finite, and all that we have in our lives is a daily gift from G-d that should never be taken for granted. Just as food helps the soul connect to the body, because without food, eventually the soul will separate from the body, b’rachot connects the soul to the Infinite. The kabbalists explain that the mouth is where the soul fuses with the body. This explains why food goes in there, as food maintains the fusion, and why b’rachot are spoken there, as they maintain the soul’s connection to the Infinite. This connection puts things in perspective and provides us the strength that can help us cope when we experience tragedy in our lives. www.kisyn.org continued on page 3 November 2010/Cheshvan-Kislev 5771 SUNDAY MORNING BAR MITZVAH NOVEMBER 7, 2010 SATURDAY MORNING BAT MITZVAH NOVEMBER 27, 2010 Ariel Daniel Buberman Rachel Lubowicz Faina and Igor Buberman proudly announce the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Ariel Daniel, on Sunday morning, November 7, 2010, at 10:00 a.m., in the Rabbi Maurice D. THE ANNA AND CHARLES RUBINS ALZHEIMER SUPPORT FUND Cantor Shron cont’d from page 2..... I would encourage all of you to begin reciting b’rachot as often as possible, and to contact me if you need help or guidance on how and when to recite them. We might not be able to have a big Thanksgiving feast every day of the year, but we can certainly count our blessings daily, and by doing so, we can face each day with optimism and gratitude. November 2010/Cheshvan-Kislev 5771 Kehilath Israel Synagogue is pleased to announce that in December, 2010, there will be a new fund established to benefit the members of the congregation. The third blessing “Sheh-heh-chehyanu” is recited only on the first day of each holiday in the Jewish year. On all other nights, we recite only the first two blessings. Chanukah candles are placed from right to left side until finally on the eighth night, the Chanukiah is full. We light the newest candle first; therefore, we always begin by kindling the candle at the left and proceed toward the right. On the Friday night of Chanukah, December 3, we always make sure that we light the Chanukah candles before sundown and before the Sabbath candles are lit. It is better not to light the Chanukah candles at all on Friday night than to light them after dark which is a violation of the Sabbath laws. On Saturday night, December 4, any time after Havdalah at 5:32 p.m., it is permis- November 2010/Cheshvan-Kislev 5771 sible to light the Chanukah menorah (Chanukiah). Jewish law requires that on every night of Chanukah, the candles must burn at least one half hour after dark. Since on Friday night we must light the Chanukah candles before Sabbath candlelighting (4:39 p.m.), it is traditional to use larger candles such as Shabbat candles or tall tapers for the Chanukiah itself. For Chanukah, one might light either an oil or a candle menorah, the only requirement being that whichever type of light is used, that it be clear and bright. There has been a great deal of discussion as to the use of an electric Chanukiah. Since it is not definite as to whether or not an electric menorah fulfills the obligation of the lighting of Chanukah lights, it is best to avoid the use of such a Chanukiah, except for purely decorative purposes. In general, on a weekday night other than Sabbath night, the Chanukah candles are to be lit approximately at dark. If, however, one is not at home or this www.kisyn.org time is inconvenient, they can be lit at any time during the entire night. If one has to leave home prior to dark and may not return for the rest of the evening, the Chanukah candles may be lit about an hour before dark, provided that Chanukah lights will burn for a short period of time after dark. The Chanukah candles are to be lit simply for religious reasons and are not to be used for any secular purposes such as lighting other objects, reading lights, etc. However, this limited use of the light applies only during the first half hour of their burning. The rabbis of old determined that the required burning time of a Chanukah candle is one half hour, and after that time, they may be used for any other purpose or even extinguished. It is customary to place the Chanukiah in the window of one’s home, on the main table around which the family gathers, near the door, or any place where lighting of the candles will become a public event. MEN’S CLUB NEWS The new slate of officers have been installed, and this is the begining of a new year. Greg Quinn is our new president and we can expect a really good year. We had our installation lunch on Sunday, October 17, and everyone had a good time. I want to thank Joyce Zeldin and her crew for a job well done. Rabbi Mandl, as usual, did a good job installing the new officers. We need some new ideas for programs and we would appreciate any help we can get. Make it a commitment to try to attend just one board meeting and let us know what kind of programs you would like to have. The Men’s Club is a great organization, and we enjoy the meetings when we get together. Marvin Orlovick, President CAPTION: On behalf of the K.I. Men's Club, Men's Club President Marvin Orlovick presents a new AED (Heart Defibulator) unit to the Synagogue at the August breakfast meeting of the Men's Club. Accepting the gift is Sam Devinki, K.I. President. The unit is located in the back hallway (in the fire extinguisher cabinet) between Brown Pavilion and the kitchen prep area so that there is ready accessibility from the kitchens, social hall, gymnasium and Brown Pavilion. Rabbi continued from page 1 Kippur, he too, chose not to play. This Kol Nidre night, Jason Marquis — the pitcher for the Washington Nationals and a team that was going no place —chose to play. Here is where G-d comes in. The first batter up against Marguis popped out in foul territory. The next batter singled. The next batter walked. The next batter singled. The next batter singled. The next batter singled. The next batter singled. The next batter was hit by a pitch. The next batter singled. The next batter singled. That was it for Marguis ... he was pulled from the game in the first inning. Thus, showing to all the world that there is a G-d in this world. Even though, I am kidding a little bit by attributing his loss to G-d, we all need to learn that we need to take pride in our Jewish faith. Shabbat Shalom Rabbi Herbert J. Mandl, PhD Senior Rabbi President’s message continued from page 1....... CAPTION: Rabbi Alan Cohen, Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Beth Shalom, was the featured speaker at the K.I. Men's Club's August breakfast meeting. Rabbi Cohen gave a presentation on the history, the process of distilling, and the qualities and nuances of Scotch whiskey... one his favorite "non-rabbinic" subjects. Grows In Brooklyn” at the White Theatre, and sometime next year, Seymour Krinsky and Mel Mallin hope to wrap up the Torah project. They have gone above and beyond in their effort to make this a once in a life time event. Although not on the Jewish calendar, November is a time of giving thanks. I would like to thank all of our volunteers, those that I have mentioned, and the many that are often not mentioned but who dedicate their time and resources to make K.I. the best synagogue in Kansas City. I would like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. 6 www.kisyn.org SamDevinki, President November 2010/Cheshvan-Kislev 5771 MEL MALLIN TO RECEIVE VILLAGE SHALOM'S SCHOENFELD VOLUNTEER AWARD others to strive toward his extraordinary level of commitment. The award will be presented at the organization's Ages of Excellence Celebration on Thursday evening, November 18, at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel. Joyce and Stan Zeldin are chairmen of the event; Karen Glickstein is serving as vice chairman. "Mel is Village Shalom's goodwill ambassador," said Matt Lewis, President and CEO. "His daily mission is to bring laughter to everyone with a joke or humorous comment residents, visitors and staff alike. Beneath his comic exterior, though, is a hard-working, dedicated volunteer who truly cares about Village Shalom and all the people whose lives are touched by it." Mallin and his wife of 61 years, Lore, have been independentliving (Villa) residents at Village Shalom for nine years. Mallin founded the Villa Residents Association and serves as its long-term president. He also co-founded Village Shalom's "humor project," and regularly visits residents throughout the continuing-care retirement community campus to tell jokes, lead sing-alongs and spread cheer. He has served as president of Kehilath Israel Synagogue and the Jewish Vocational Service, and as a board member of the Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy. His commitment to improving the world, one person at a time, includes mentoring a young man for the last seven years, from third grade to his current sophomore year at Rockhurst High School. The Stephen J. Schoenfeld Volunteer Recognition Award commemorates the exceptional dedication of its namesake to the needs and concerns of Jewish seniors in Kansas City. After graduating from the University of Kansas in 1972, Stephen became an active volunteer at Village Shalom's predecessor organization, Shalom Geriatric Center, where he served as one of the youngest members of its board of directors.
