HIV Edmonton, formerly the AIDS
Network, was formed by concerned
members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgendered and allied (LBGTA)
community in response to the first
public case of AIDS in Edmonton.
These activists gathered around
Michael Phair’s kitchen table in the
summer of 1984 to respond to a crisis.
By 1986, the Network was incorporated.
Their commitment makes this report
to the community possible and we
are profoundly grateful for their early
dedication.
We wrapped up our 2007–2010
Strategic Plan this year and have
evaluated our work. Key strategic
directions included increased focus on
Research & Evaluation, Organizational
Development, and Fund Development.
The board and staff were committed
to these areas and, as you read on, you
will see that we have been successful.
In the winter of 2009, the Board
adopted the 2010–2013 Strategic Plan
and are committed to moving forward.
Our Community Education team
continued their work on increasing
awareness, capacity building and
prevention services. The team has
expanded the services we provide to
include increased work with men who
have sex with men through online,
bar and bathhouse interventions.
Further in the report, you will read
that Community Education has made
great strides forward in working with
newcomer community members
who come from countries where
HIV is endemic.
The Support and Outreach team have
also met their goals of increasing the
amount of outreach we provide in
the community and to individuals.
The response has been astounding,
with staff providing services to three
partner agencies on a regular basis.
Rates of HIV continue to remain the
same in Edmonton and, with improved
treatment outcomes, the organization
is serving an increasing number of
people living with HIV and AIDS.
Three years ago, the Board identified
the need to diversify funding as a key
strategic direction and the executive
director has since focused on this
work. This year, the agency invested,
and has assembled a team of two
to concentrate on development,
communications and increasing
volunteer participation. We have

had success in all three areas and will
ensure that this continues so we may
be less reliant on the uncertainty
of government funding.
We spent much of 2009 and 2010
fulfilling a dream by honoring our
founders and early supporters. From
this The Legacy Project, a 15-month
campaign, was developed and has
created a stir in the community and
excitement within the organization.
We simply could not accomplish
our goals if it were not for the inspired
guidance of our Board of Directors, the
exceptional work of all our employees
and the generosity and dedication of
our many volunteers. Ongoing support
from our sponsors, donors, partners
and members is essential to our work
and we are thankful for their support.
Enjoy learning more about the work
we have done this year as you read on.

THE LEGACY
Support
PROJECT
HIV Edmonton began in 1984 as the
AIDS Network of Edmonton, led by
Michael Phair and a group of friends
that gathered around his kitchen table
to discuss the first public case of AIDS
in Edmonton. In 1999, the agency
changed its name to the HIV Network
of Edmonton Society, or HIV Edmonton
as it is more commonly known.
The Legacy Project, commemorating
25 years of HIV/AIDS work in
Edmonton, is a 15-month campaign,
highlighted by various projects and
events. HIV Edmonton launched this
campaign at an event November
19, 2009 at the Fairmont Hotel
MacDonald. This event celebrated the
accomplishments of Michael Phair
and those that joined him around his
kitchen table to embark upon a journey
of hope.
The Legacy Project is comprised
of the following:
The Legacy Garden:

in Edmonton. HIV Edmonton will
be applying for a public art grant
and soliciting donors to create a
monument/garden.
“Around Michael’s Kitchen Table:
25 Years of AIDS in Edmonton”:
HIV Edmonton is developing a
coffee table book to commemorate
the champions of the HIV and AIDS
movement in Edmonton to be written
by CBC Edmonton Producer, Leslie
Goldstone. Alberta photographers Roth
& Ramberg (www.rothandramberg.com)
and graphic designers Plumbheavy
Design Inc. (www.plumbheavy.ca) have
generously donated their services to
make this project possible.
HIV Edmonton 25th Anniversary Gala:
Planning is currently underway for the
Legacy Gala, to be held February 20,
2011 at the Fairmont Hotel MacDonald.
Distinguished Speakers, sponsored
by CBC Edmonton:
The Legacy Distinguished Speakers
Series brings five (5) renowned
innovators and leaders in the field
of HIV/AIDS to Edmonton to speak
& Outreach
on topics pertaining to HIV/AIDS
and global trends and information.
The series, sponsored by CBC
Edmonton, will be free admission
and will be hosted at the Northern
Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
Legacy Volunteer Program:
HIV Edmonton has launched the Legacy
Volunteer Program, to engage our
corps of volunteers as the keystones of
our agency. This program will feature
appreciation events, a year-end award
ceremony, and a volunteer-specific HIV
101 training workshop.
Legacy Concert Series:
This 3-part concert series is an integral
primary fundraising initiative for HIV
Edmonton and the Legacy Project.
Support Services
This year, the Support and
Outreach team at HIV Edmonton
saw a significant increase in the
number of client contacts, from 5,344
in 2008 to 8,845 in 2009. This represents
a 65% increase in client contact and
translates to approximately 35 client
contacts per day. High quality support
services were provided not only to
people living with HIV and their
loved ones, but also to people who
are at risk of contracting HIV.
Talking Circle
Talking Circle is a traditional
and sacred Aboriginal cleansing
ceremony held weekly at HIV
Edmonton. Talking Circle provides
a safe place for clients to communicate.
The Circle brings together aboriginal
and non-aboriginal clients in a quiet,
respectful manner for the purpose of
listening, learning and sharing. The
number of registered clients attending
the Circle increased dramatically from
33 in 2008 to 77 in 2009.
Acupuncture Clinic
Dr. Jennifer Yee, a naturopathic
doctor, offers acupuncture sessions
to registered clients. Dr. Jen comes
twice a month and provides clients
with coping methods for everything
from chronic pain to quitting smoking.
Nutrition Support
A high-calorie and high-protein diet
is imperative for clients, particularly
those on antiretroviral therapy. The
Wednesday Drop-In not only allows
clients to have a hot meal, but also
to connect with others. In addition,
registered clients can receive Ensure™
meal replacement daily. Unfortunately,
demand for Ensure™ far exceeds
the current supply.

BODYMAPPING
ARTIST REFLECTIONS
“Try it – I guarantee you’ll like it.
Since the Bodymapping I’ve been
taking my meds everyday now.
Thanks bodymapping.”
“An exciting new way to explore
your body, mind, and soul. Brings
out your “inner artist”! Relates living
with HIV to many important aspects
life: psycho-social, physical, spiritual,
artistic/creative. This workshop is
highly holistic, completely fun,
and very effective.”

of the participants’ journeys in self
reflection. By the time they are finished
their maps, they are referred to as
“Bodymapping Artists”.
This year’s Artist Facilitator, Don
Short, of St. John’s, Newfoundland
brought expertise in the fields of HIV
and art to the workshop. In addition
to his Coordinator role at the AIDS
Committee of Newfoundland and
Labrador, Don has over 20 years of
experience with visual arts, and his
current portfolio of artwork conveys
the journey of post-diagnosis and
living above the complexity of HIV.
I’M NOT SO BEATEN BY THE HIV
“I would recommend this workshop
for anyone living with or affected
by HIV/AIDS. The Bodymapping
workshop brought to my attention
some of the aspects I was not fully
aware of beforehand. For example,
the simple fact of how taking
medications actually improved
my overall health and boosted my
hopes in my future of living a fuller
and more constructive life. I have
discovered that I am not alone in this
very real issue which affects more
people than I was aware of after
attending the workshop!”
“It is a very enlightening experience,
not only learning a new skill that is
painting and color play, but letting
the Bodymapping process help
release tension and fears. This is
something anyone can do no matter
where they think they are in dealing
with HIV. I share my experiences and
learn from others their experiences
with HIV. I tell all my HIV positive
friends that they should really
experience this event. It was a
lot of fun.”
Telling Your Story
Community
Bodymapping is a creative approach
to sharing life experiences through
art. At HIV Edmonton, it is a treatment
information and support tool,
a process of self-discovery, and
a means of building community
amongst people living with HIV. This
year, seven participants contributed
to the workshop at the River Lodge
Retreat Centre in Stony Plain. For
four days, participants engaged in
painting, sharing, laughing, drumming,
eating, and reflecting. The bodymaps
they created are not only works of
art, but are also teaching tools, public
awareness messages, and evidence
It’s been so
enlightening,
Our Bodymapping exhibit and reception,
titled Living with X 2010, provided an
opportunity for Bodymapping Artists
to invite friends and family to witness
their art and to orient visitors to the
stories depicted on their maps. We
would like to thank The Paint Spot for
their continued support – they made
it possible for the Bodymaps to be
displayed for two months, and for HIV
Edmonton to host a workshop, as well
as the Bodymapping Reception, in their
Salon Gallery.
This program allows speakers to convey
their life experiences as messages to
educate others about HIV and AIDS.
These stories promote HIV prevention
and help to create and enhance
supportive environments for those
living with HIV/AIDS. As members of
the program, speakers are invited by
schools, organizations, and community
groups to tell their story of living with
HIV. Speakers Training was facilitated
by PLWHA speaker, peer counselor
and educator, Stephen Alexander,
National Programs Consultant with the
Canadian AIDS Society. This year, HIV
Edmonton has welcomed 12 speakers
through training, monthly meetings
and speaking engagements. Speakers
offer a valuable service, and are often
the favorite part of a presentation.
Experiences from the positive speaker program
“It’s been very enlightening, I’m
not so beaten by the HIV. It’s very
sobering.. I’m beginning to learn
more about myself as I go along.
I accept the disease at face value.
It’s high risk and it includes everyone
in the community, from the doctors
to the Average Joe. I accept it.”
– R. Cardinal
“I liked how the speaker can come out
and talk about his life (about HIV/
AIDS) Thank you!”
“The speakers are beautiful people
and wonderful story tellers. Their
individual narratives bring the
workshop alive and puts a face,
name and personhood to the virus.
Thanks for sharing your courage and
testimonies. You bring life to those
listening. Keep bringing hope!”

DEVELOPMENT
DEVELOPMENT
Phenix
In July of 2009, HIV Edmonton
introduced a pilot project, the
Phenix Course, an 8-week workshop
series designed by sexology researchers
at the University of Quebec at Montreal.
This course combines eroticism
and risk reduction and is offered for
gay, bisexual, queer, and two-spirit
men looking to reduce their risk of
HIV/STI infection while learning how
to have better sex. HIV Edmonton uses
a holistic approach to risk reduction
in this workshop, and at the request
of the participants, increases the
exploration of eroticism. The Phenix
curriculum goes beyond traditional
sexual health education to include
the realms of the physical, intellectual,
emotional and spiritual.
Community Based Research
This year, HIV Edmonton completed
the interview portion of a needs
assessment to gain a better
understanding of the HIV prevention,
care and support needs of newcomer
populations in Edmonton. Interviews
were conducted with allied community,
10 HIV EDMONTON 2009 ANNUAL REPORT
health and social-service providers,
physicians, and newcomer PWLHAs.
As a result of this assessment, HIV
Edmonton has tailored our workplan
for 2010 to better meet the needs
of PLWHAs by providing culturally
appropriate education and
outreach services.
Bathhouse outreach
HIV Edmonton is working with local
bathhouses to make sure that men
have access to the resources they want.
Bathhouses have provided space for a
permanent resource area, as well as a
room for an HIV Edmonton staff to set
up a display, a supply of various kinds
of condoms and lube, and a safe place
to talk or ask sexual health questions.
We would like to congratulate our
bathhouse partners, Down Under and
Steamworks, in taking a leadership role
in men’s health and HIV prevention!
SIHA RURAL
HIV Edmonton is pleased to announce
an expanded partnership with the
Students’ International Health
Association (SIHA) from the University
& COMMUNICATIONS
of Alberta. For over 8 years, HIV
Edmonton has partnered with SIHA
to provide HIV education workshops
led BY youth FOR youth throughout
the city. This year, our partnership
grew to provide SIHA the opportunity
to travel to rural areas. The SIHA
rural road trip consisted of two cars,
5 youth volunteers, and 2 volunteers
from the Positive Speakers Program.
Together, they reached over 500 youth
in rural communities across Alberta.
My experience working alongside
SIHA in presentations to various
groups of people was a great chance
to connect with others who are in
the field of educating others about
things like HIV. I really hope that the
students were able to walk away from
that trip with some other views of
how HIV affects those living with it,
and they can articulate the importance
of knowing more than statistics. Knowing we are people with feelings
and lives, much the same as their
own, will hopefully add to their future
presentations. –Curtis Branston, Positive Speaker
Last year saw many exciting changes
in Fund Development for HIV
Edmonton. At the end of 2008/09, 79%
of HIV Edmonton’s revenue came from
the single source of contribution
agreements. As outlined in the 2007–2010
Strategic Plan, the Board recognized the
need to diversify funding sources. In
addition, the Board identified that
strong communications were essential
to the future of the agency.
Based upon these findings, the
Board and administration decided
to establish a Development &
Communications department,
comprised of two full-time staff. This
department is responsible for fund
development, event planning,
communications, marketing and
facilitation of the volunteer program.
An execution plan has been created
and implemented with a heavy focus
on diversifying funding sources,
increasing revenue, and solidifying
brand awareness through the
communications of key messages.
As a result, the percentage of HIV
Edmonton’s revenue from contribution
agreements dropped from 79% to
72% for 2009/10.
A key element to the success of
the Development & Communications
department is the emphasis placed
on engaging the community. The
Legacy Project is steered by this
department and each event affords
them with an opportunity to “friendraise,” raising the profile of the agency
while developing donor relations.
This year saw increases in
several funding sources:
• Increased individual donations,
with staff and volunteers joining
our monthly giving program.
• Partnership with Starbucks for
World AIDS Day and launching
the “Celebrity Barista” campaign,
where several media personalities
worked as baristas and donation
boxes were placed at all 63
Starbucks locations in Edmonton.
Not only did this program raise
funds for the agency, but the
Increased media attention
raised our profile substantially.
• Creation of the Red Ribbon
Shoppe, the agency’s first
online sales tool, making it
easier for donors to support
the cause with the purchase
of books, event tickets, and
merchandise. All items in the
Shoppe will serve as fundraising
mechanisms for the agency.
• A significant increase in
sponsorship money raised by
the annual Scotiabank AIDS
Walk for Life.
Taking further steps to solidifying the
agency’s future, plans are currently
in development to launch the Legacy
Circle, an exclusive program for donors
to make arrangements today to give
later. Planned Giving is one of the most
powerful philanthropic tools available
today and is also one of the most
popular. More and more people are
coming to realize the impact that this
sort of legacy can have. The Legacy
Circle will provide recognition and
celebration for these invaluable
and passionate supporters.

Visits to the Ross armstrong
program this year.
RosSsArmstrong
Program
The Ross Armstrong Program takes
place once every month and provides
people living with HIV vitamins,
hygiene supplies, and a $10 grocery
card. This year saw 532 visits to the
Ross Armstrong Program. In addition
to this monthly program, we also held
a summer BBQ and a Christmas dinner
for clients.
The summer BBQ was attended by
clients and their families, agency staff,
and HIV Edmonton board members.
The Christmas dinner was remarkably
successful. With the support of
volunteers and the board, we served
a traditional turkey dinner to 61
appreciative clients.

Because of our amazing Volunteers
we were able to do so much during
the 2009/2010 fiscal year, some
highlights are:
“Created the first ever HIV Edmonton
float in the Pride parade with 20+
costumed volunteers walking the
parade, handing out 1,000 condom
kits and flowers to the crowd.
Our volunteers logged 641 hours in
September alone to ensure the AIDS
Walk for Life was successful.”
18 HIV EDMONTON 2009 ANNUAL REPORT
“During AIDS Awareness Week
Volunteers worked educational booths;
handed out ribbons and brochures
at MAC Cosmetics and Starbucks
locations; and hand-made 7,000
ribbons in two weeks to
blanket Edmonton schools, city
hall and media outlets.”
“For the Annual Client Christmas
Party volunteers stuffed backpacks
with their own donations to be
handed out to our clients; cooked
8 turkeys, 50 lbs of potatoes and
a huge amount of dressing, gravy,
Aids ripped us apart.

up from 1,403 in 2008.

cakes, pies and cookies. A team
of volunteers attended the party
to serve food and play musical
instruments for clients.”
“Volunteers living with HIV routinely
speak at presentations along with our
community education team.”
“Volunteers come into the office
on a weekly basis to assist with
everything from administrative
to client work.”

Project
Aids Awareness Week 2009
“AIDS ripped apart the sexual
psyches of a whole generation of
queer men. It ripped apart mine,
and I was a baby still when the
death counts began to grow.
Shrouded in silence, thousands
of queer men went to the grave
afraid, clothed and hidden.
It wasn’t until my teenage years
that the memories started to come.
In the lamp-lit glow of my bedroom,
stories from the darkness weaved
their way into my life. Books, movies
and photographs all pointed in on
direction – the gay man was first
and foremost a diseased man. That
would mean, of course, that I was
a diseased man.
Sex and AIDS became synonymous,
and as hard as I tried to separate
them, the chains seemed impossible.
Fear wrapped its heavy hand around
me and I carried the burden of AIDS
upon my shoulders.
AIDS ripped us apart. Collectively, we
can stitch ourselves together again.
I think it’s time that I stitched
myself together again.”

OUR vision:
HIV Edmonton works with
the whole community, in a
global context, ensuring:
There are no new HIV infections.
People living with HIV live longer, healthier
lives, free of stigma.
Everyone affected by HIV gets the services
they need without barriers or discrimination.
OUR MISSION:
To provide support,
education and advocacy
for those infected with,
affected by, and at risk
of HIV.

When I look back at
the pioneers who
began the AIDS Network
of Edmonton, I am in
awe of the challenges
they faced.
Their response to public panic, indifference by the Board
of Health and the growing crisis in the LBGT community
was one of courage and compassion. Their early work laid
the foundation that enables us to grow today as we move
forward into the future.
