Matthew My brothers and sisters in Christ, We have just concluded the 43rd Biennial Clergy Laity Congress held in Nashville, TN. Below are some highlights from the press release found on goarch.org. “You are the voice of Christ in a changing world” NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 43rd Biennial Clergy Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America concluded Thursday, July 7, 2016, with the plenary session and the traditional Grand Banquet at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. A total of 1,197 registered participants were in attendance including 396 delegates to the National Philoptochos Convention. The work of the Congress culminated with Thursday’ s daylong plenary session, the presentation of the reports and the approval of the budgets for the next two years. The following ministries, departments and committees presented their reports: Stewardship- Outreach and Evangelism, Religious Education, Greek Education, Administration, Finance, Center for Family Care, Office of Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical & Interfaith Relations, Leadership 100, Youth and Young Adults Ministries, Communications, Hellenic College Holy Cross, Chaplaincy and National Philoptochos. Within the scope of the Administration Committee, three amendments to the Regulations of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America were presented and following extensive discussion were approved. The amendments are on Conflicts Disclosure Policy, Whistle-blower policy and Youth protection. Additionally a Financial Disclosure Amendment to the Uniform Parish Regulations was approved. Several resolutions were adapted by the Congress and included: a resolution proposed by the Order of St. Andrew – Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate on Religious Freedom, a resolution regarding Hagia Sophia, that deplores the use of Hagia Sophia for conducting Muslim services, opposes any plans to convert it into a Mosque and calls for it to remain as a museum. Also a resolution on terrorism was adapted which deplores the innocent killing of civilians by terrorists affiliated with radical terrorist groups and condemns those who kill others in the name of religion. In a separate resolution the 43rd Clergy Laity Congress applauds the presence and functioning of the Assembly of Bishops of the United States; calls upon all Orthodox Christians to support the Assembly of Bishops to foster greater unity and coordination of Orthodox Christianity in America; and calls upon all Orthodox Churches in America to work together on the ministries of the Church and serve as a common witness in the secular society of today. Finally, a resolution of thanks was adapted expressing gratitude to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and all those who contributed to the success of the Congress. From trips to New York to as far away as Greece. I hope that everyone is enjoying a safe and rewarding summer. We are still looking for volunteers to help during the three day Greek Food Festival. As you all know this is the largest fund raising event that our church conducts. We are reaching out and encouraging our new members as well as those who have grown up with the church to step forward and help with this wonderful event. The Festival Committee is working hard to make sure that this year will run as smoothly as last year. We will be publishing dates for cooking and preparing the many dishes that go into this event. If you have questions about how you may help please be sure to ask any of the Parish Council members. In July I was able to attend the 43rd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress. The theme this year was “You are the Voice of Christ in a Changing World” “As the Father has sent Me, so I send you”. John 20:21 “You are the light of the world”. Matthew 5:14 There were many presentations on the lack of growth within the church, not only the Orthodox faith but in all faiths. We are always saying that the Youth are the future of the church however His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios stated that “The Youth are not the future of the Church, The church is the future of the Youth”. He went on to explain that “We all need to affirm together that we know Christ, that we are committed to His will, and that with this knowledge we are able to be His voice, to offer the Gospel, and to lead others to Him. We will affirm and strengthen our witness to share His voice, speaking truth in love, revealing divine power and abundant life, and inviting all to come to Him and to the saving communion with God”. Always remember that in all things we do we are the messengers of God. Please be sure to look at our web site and keep up with events at the church. Always be sure to contact the church office to schedule any event in order to ensure proper support when needed and no conflicts with other events. The church office hours are 9am to 3pm. If you need assistance after hours please be sure to contact the office and set up an appointment. Again, thank you all for your continued help and support. Working together we can accomplish all things through God. James R. Registration forms will be available in the hall or in the Church Office. Please call the Church Office (433-2662) for more information. We’re looking forward to another wonderful year of Sunday School! Sunday School Teachers Sunday School teachers will meet following the Divine Liturgy on Sunday, August 7, to discuss the beginning of classes for the new Ecclesiastical Year. If you are interested in volunteering either as a teacher, substitute teacher, or classroom assistant, please contact Fr. Matthew. Altar Boys We will have an Altar Boy meeting for all Altar Boys and their parents/guardians on Sunday, August 21, immediately after Sunday School. All young men ages 8-18 are encouraged to join our Altar Boy team and serve as Acolytes. From the ancient Greek word “to follow” – Ακολουθέω – Acolytes are those young men who are choosing to follow the Lord by serving in His holy altar. This ministry is invaluable to the Church because the Acolytes are the ones who help maintain the integrity of the altar and assist the priest with the various aspects of the divine services. If you would like your son to serve as an Altar Boy, please contact Philip Brown or Fr. Matthew.
