po•ten•tial: adj. Having possibility, capability, or power.
Family MATTERS
It is no secret that Adam’s Camp promotes families. Our therapy camps focus not only on progress for
the camper with special needs, but on the strength and support of that camper’s family as well.
In the past 28 years, we have seen how Adam’s Camp changes families. What we have had the honor to
observe is not only the impact our programs have on campers and their families, but the impact on the
families of those who serve our campers as well!
For the past 15 years, Cindy Wells has been a volunteer for Adam’s Camp. She
began her work with us by serving on the committee for our spring event and
is now on the Adam’s Camp Board of Directors. When she came to committee
meetings in her early days with us, she often had her three small children in
tow. Over the years, Cindy’s husband Randy has joined us by supporting our
golf tournament. When Cindy’s daughter Elizabeth was a young teen, she and
her mom worked side by side with Adam’s Camp thorough National Charity
League. Today, Elizabeth and Matthew are teenagers who have become great
volunteers up at camp in the summer. Cindy and her entire family are part of
the Adam’s Camp family today.
The Wells Family
Jane Buckley has been an active volunteer for
more than 10 years. She also began by working
on a special event and is an active Board of Directors member today. Her
then small children have become active with camp by volunteering at events
(Erin and soon Pete), raising money for camp through their own fundraisers,
promoting Adam’s Camp at Arapahoe High School, and when old enough, as
Katie and Joey now are, volunteering at camp. Jane’s husband Steve is a loyal
donor and plays in our golf tournament every year! Katie will be heading to
college next year where she will pursue a degree in Special Education because
of her work with Adam’s Camp. Again, a family impacted by their work with
Adam’s Camp.

According to one of our volunteers from this summer, “Adam’s camp really
opened my eyes up to what it means to be happy and positive. I see everything with a new perspective
now and I am a much more patient person. Words can’t even describe the impact that Adam’s Camp has
made on me. I can’t wait to be back next year and I plan to dedicate a lot more of my time volunteering.”

Many of the families who attend camp have made Adam’s Camp a family affair
as well! This past summer, the Roitz, Skomal, DeFranco, Saiz, Gregg, Marion,
Bernardis, Powell, Landoch, Crawford and Chauvin families all not only
enjoyed the benefits of camp for their campers, but watched their other kids
grow as enthusiastic volunteers as well.
Adam’s Camp changes all of our lives.
Bill Harmon, President
Jane Buckley
Nick Polito has been an Adam’s Camper for almost 15 years! His parents, Jill and Joe, have been great
supporters and his sister Audrey became a volunteer with us as a teen, went
to college and got her degree in speech therapy. This past summer, she worked
at a speech therapist at camp!

Welcome.....
To our newest staff members, Katie and Mandy! Katie Driggins is our
Adventure Camp Manager and has already put in a summer of great work
for Adam’s Camp! She comes to us from the Starlight Foundation where she
was the Program Director.
Mandy Lee did such a fantastic job as our intern this past spring and summer
that we hired her to assist Therapy Program Manager Kim Kelleher. She is a
great addition to our team!
We also want to welcome new Board of Directors members Jamie Bailey and
Anna Finlay. Jamie has served Adam’s Camp as chair of our Hoops for Hope
event and has joined the Development and Special Events committee too.
Anna comes to us with a background in education and has a special interest
in special education. We look forward to including these two dynamic women
on our team!

A Look Back at 2014
It is always so encouraging to look back at the programming, families and campers who joined us for our sessions each year! Here
is a recap of 2014:
ADVENTURE CAMP
• 245 Campers took part in our week long programs during the summer
• 32 Campers attended our NEW camp session at YMCA, Estes Park in October
• 41 campers attended Adam’s Camp for the first time
• 27 campers attended our first Winter Weekend
• 30 campers attended our weekend getaways
• 60 campers attended our Winter Ball
THERAPY CAMP
• 108 campers attended our Pathfinder or Trailblazer Programs at Snow Mountain Ranch
• 388 parents and siblings attended camp
• 16 toddlers and their families attended one of two Early Start Session held in the spring and fall
VOLUNTEERS
• 196 volunteers devoted a week of their time to support and Adam’s Camp session
Those are the facts, and here is a story behind the numbers. This family so well articulates what we
hear over and over from the families who attend our Mountain Therapy Camps.
“We have a seven year old daughter with multiple disabilities who continues to exceed every expectation ever placed on her. We come
to Adam’s Camp as a family with both our daughters. Our older daughter is the best big sister
ever so it is so nice for her to be with other siblings who really understand her life. Then my
husband and I get 6 hours of greatly needed respite each day as the girls lives are truly being
changed. ….. (Our daughter) does do therapy the entire year and has a wonderful school
program, but there is just something about being in the multi modal therapies, with people
who truly care about her and know her abilities are far beyond what anyone else thinks,
that let her truly make breakthroughs we never thought possible… Siblings sometimes feel
like they are “second”, no matter how hard we try to let them know just how “special” they
are just for being themselves. …At this point, we cannot imagine our life without Adam’s
Camp! Once you are part of the Adam’s Camp family, you will always have someone ready
to advocate, listen, help, explain and simply just love you for who you are and where you are
in this amazing journey of having a child with special needs.” Parent of a Therapy Camper
First Year of Adam’s Camp New Hampshire a great success!
The third Adam’s Camp Outreach site is up and running! Adam’s Camp New Hampshire
enjoyed a great launch in July and is hoping to double in size next year. Thanks to their
outstanding Board of Directors and staff, this program promises great things in the
future. Thanks to Outreach Director Bob Horney for all of his great work on our Outreach
programs.
Adam’s Camp New Hampshire
A Preview of 2015!
At Adam’s Camp, we are always looking forward! We have some exciting program enhancements planned for 2015 including:
•Our Therapy Camps will feature a specialized Augmentative Communication Session. Campers who use communication
devices will participate on teams with specialists who will enhance their skills with communication.
•Families will have a chance to do a “progress update” meeting in January with someone from their summer therapy team.
This meeting will give therapists and families the chance to revisit the strategies suggested in the summer to prepare their
campers for success the rest of the year.
•Adventure Camp will be introducing new optional activities for campers including a “camp out”, sailing, new arts and crafts
and an all-camp field day. More choices, more activities, more FUN!
•Adventure Campers, gear up for another great Winter Weekend, March 13-15, 2015! Snowshoe, ice skate, tube, snowball
fights…anything to do with snow!
Applications will open on December 1. Be sure to sign up early with our new and improved registration system as we will again
offer an Early Application Discount for those who apply before December 31!

Mark Wiebe’s Golf Classic Benefits Adam’s Camp
A huge thank you goes to Mark Wiebe, 2013 British Senior Open champion and his wife Cathy, who hosted the 9th annual Mark
Wiebe Adam’s Camp Classic 2014 on September 29 at the Colorado Golf Club. As always, the Colorado Golf Club did a sensational
job of making sure the golfers had a premier experience. Noodles and Company provided a delicious and hearty lunch for the
golfers to fuel them as they headed to the course. Dinner was sensational and the program gave attendees the opportunity to learn
just how their support impacts the children and families of Adam’s Camp. WB2’s Tom Green, our emcee kept everyone laughing
as did Adam Horney as auctioneer.
The event was sponsored by Great West Financial, Fidelity, Invesco, John Hancock, MFS, Oppenheimer, Nuveen, Janus, Pioneer,
Ridgeworth, Janet Elway, FirstBank, Hercules Industries, Buckley Powder, UMB, Eide Bailly, Legg Mason, Master Klean Janitorial,
Rocky Mountain Pediatric Gastroenterology, Project Resources Group and The Nugent Group – UBS. Many thanks to these
wonderful sponsors!
Golfers experienced significant storms necessitating cessation of play but they turned lemons into lemonade, making the event
a terrific party. They were rewarded for their great response with delicious meals, great prizes and rain-check certificates. The
children with special needs and families of Adam’s Camp were rewarded because the Mark Wiebe Adam’s Camp Classic raised over
$193,000.
We are truly grateful to Paige Schuster for chairing the event, Bill Harmon for securing the title sponsorship and the whole
committee including Jeff DePasse, Missy Franks, Cathy Wiebe, Clay Waller, Sharon Link, Jane Buckley and Dean Flora for
building such a fun and successful event. Thank you, Jim and Veronica Brennan for your terrific work photographing the event.

A Dinner to Remember
Every November Adam’s Camp hosts
a dinner honoring a loyal supporter.
This year we will have the privilege of
honoring our founder and long-time
Executive Director, Karel Horney, as
she prepares to retire. Guests will
be treated to an evening filled with
both heartfelt and humorous tributes
to Karel in the beautiful setting of
Glenmoor Country Club. It will be
an elegant evening which includes a
scrumptious dinner, a silent auction
and support for Building Potentials, our
capital campaign to fund a new building
which will complete Adam’s Camp’s
home at Snow Mountain Ranch. The
high point of the evening will surely be
when camper and accomplished singer,
Bobby Swift performs, demonstrating
just how powerful the impact of Adam’s
Camp can be on our young campers.

Hoops for Hope 2015
Adam’s Camp and Partners in Pediatrics are teaming up again to bring you Hoops for Hope, a one-of-a-kind event featuring two
basketball teams competing in support of the children and families of Adam’s Camp, on Sunday, March 8, 2015 at Cherry Creek
High School. Doors and concessions will open at 12:00. Game time will be 1:00. Be prepared to be thoroughly entertained by some
serious basketball, some not-so-serious basketball, performances by Peak Athletics Cheer Stars and Dance Stars, great music and
of course, a dance-off.
Hoops for Hope is decidedly affordable family fun for kids of all ages with proceeds benefiting Adam’s Camp! The teams are made
up of local celebrities, including former Denver Nugget Bill Hanzlik, Denver Broncos Ring of Fame great Tom Nalen, CBS4’s
Jim Benemann and others; the crew from Partners in Pediatrics and some very special Adam’s Camp campers. You can count on
seeing some great basketball but even greater entertainment. Jamie Bailey and Nancy Lataitis, MD, are chairing this event. If you
know of a local celebrity who might like to play or coach, or you are interested in sponsoring, please contact Sarah at 303-563-8290
or [email protected].

Susan Larson has been our
Insurance Billing coordinator
for 6 years, and over the past
few years has taken on more
of the IT function. Susan has
been responsible for helping
us identify and implement
our new camper registration

We couldn’t be more grateful
for the wonderful Skomal
family and all they contribute
to Adam’s Camp!
Mom
Betsy has volunteered in our
office on a regular basis, and
daughter Jeri volunteered in
our sibs program at camp this
summer. All of our families
are special, but those who
give back to us so freely
are extraordinary.
Thanks,

Bill Harmon
Our golf tournament exceeded
all of our expectations this
year thanks in large part to the
work of board president Bill
Harmon! Bill combined our
event with a business meeting
and brought in fund partners
from across the country to
add $75,000 to the $193,000
raised at this event. Thanks a
million, Bill!
We are so grateful for the enduring, generous support of the businesses, foundations,
service groups and individuals who in partnership with Adam’s Camp help individuals with
special needs and their families REALIZE POTENTIALS and DEVELOP STRENGTHS. For their

Sad Goodbyes
The joy we experience in knowing our special campers has been punctuated by sadness far too often this past year.
In May, we lost our dear
friend Ben Wharton. Ben
attended Adam’s Camp
more times than any other
camper, attending at least
once a year for almost 20
years. Ben lived in Granby
with his mom and dad,
Willie and Jan Wharton.
A tragic choking accident
took him from us, but his
spirit and joy will forever
linger at Adam’s Camp.
Austin Zeil, an Early Start
camper
whose
family
supported Adam’s Camp for
many years, left us in July.
Austin was the inspiration for
the HighPointe Center which
is attended by many of our
campers. He was the son of
Ken and Kim Zeil, and will be
so missed by all of those who
knew and loved him.
Ben Wharton
Austin Zeil
It is never easy to say goodbye to our campers, and we offer our heartfelt love to their families.
Executive Director Transition
While there can never be a replacement, Adam’s Camp’s board of directors is working hard to ensure that a wonderful successor
will be hired as Executive Director following Karel Horney’s retirement. A transition task force of board and staff members has
been formed and is working with consultant, Christine Soto, to plan and conduct the search process. The position has been posted
since November 1st and interviews will be conducted in December and January. Please visit our website for more information:
