2016 Hodag Leaders` Guide
Great Lakes Field Service Council 2016 Hodag Leaders’ Guide January 29-31 At Camp Agawam 1223 West Clarkston Road, Lake Orion, MI 48362 A youth-run, patrol-based winter event for Boy Scouts, Webelos Scouts and Venturers Hosted by Pontiac-Manito Chapter, Noquet Lodge 29, Order of the Arrow 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 2 OVERVIEW The Hodag The Hodag is a one day, one night (second night optional but encouraged) winter campout in which Scouts compete in Patrols/Crews/Dens in events variously emphasizing Scout skills, teamwork and spirit. It is 100% created and run by the youth of the Pon-Man Order of the Arrow chapter. Youth-led units compete to win The Coveted Golden Coffee Thingy. Why call it a Hodag? The word “Hodag” comes from an alleged mythical beast (like the Loch Ness Monster or Big Foot or Paul Bunyan’s Babe the Blue Ox) exhibited to the public in a large-scale prank in the 1890s in Rochester, Wisconsin. The prank ended when the Smithsonian Institution announced it would investigate the existence of the Hodag. Our OA brothers from Central Region sponsored a party at the 2006 National Order of the Arrow Conference entitled “The Hodag.” Pon-Man Chapter brought the spirit of that great gathering home to this event in 2007, which had previously been known as a Klondike. The theme of the Hodag changes each year. Don’t over-analyze the fun of the Hodag, or it might disappear, just like it did in 1896. This Year’s Theme: A Magical Gathering! This year’s theme draws from the trading card game Magic the Gathering™. MTG uses randomized cards in assembled decks and used to compete against others using strategy and skill to defeat your opponent. You’re in for a combination of fun and Scouting at this year’s Hodag! Who Is Invited Boy Scout patrols, Venture Crews and Webelos may attend. Webelos are required to attach themselves to a Boy Scout Troop for competition. Webelos are strongly encouraged to attach themselves to a Boy Scout Troop they are considering joining. Boy Scouts (with attached Webelos) and Venturers camp overnight. Webelos dens not camping with troops arrive Saturday morning. Each Webelos Scout must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 3 Patrol Method and Leadership One of the two purposes of the Hodag is to learn and have fun while using the Patrol Method. The competition is organized by patrol, crew or den. All Boy Scout patrols should be under the leadership of a Patrol Leader (PL) at all times, with an Assistant Scoutmaster or other designated adult leader present. Boy Scout troops should be under the direct leadership of a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), guided by a Scoutmaster or other designated adult leader. Venture crews should be under the leadership of their President, with the Adviser or other designated adult leader present. Youth Staff The Hodag is a boy-run and -led event. The event and its activities have been planned and developed by youth and will be staffed by youth, as part of the Order of the Arrow’s leadership development mission. The second purpose of the Hodag is to provide a learning experience for staff. Staff objectives include learning and practicing brotherhood, cheerful service, and an introduction to event management/leadership on a modest scale. While the staff and their advisers strive to prevent or minimize problems, we ask unit leaders, in the spirit of Scouting, to help turn any issues which may arise into positive learning opportunities for all. Boy Scout troops are strongly encouraged to provide at least one OA member (preferably a buddy system of 2) other than the SPL and PLs to help staff the Hodag (example: OA Troop Rep and first-year Arrowman). Among other benefits, admission for staff members is free, provided they attend the January Pon-Man OA chapter meeting or apply by contacting one of the individuals listed in the “For More Information” section. Due to staff capacity limitations, not all applicants may be accepted, so it is important prospective staff members sign up in advance to receive the benefits of being on staff. Do not register approved staff members as part of your unit’s contingent. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 4 PREPARING THE UNIT Facilities Leave No Trace THIS IS A LEAVE NO TRACE EVENT Out of respect for the facilities made available to us, please ask your members to help us leave the grounds and buildings cleaner than we found them. Straw bedding is not permitted at this event, unless securely contained in mattresses packed in advance and disposed of after returning home. Please, follow the LNT guidelines for this event and leave the facilities better than we found them. NO burning of straw will be allowed. Restrooms Restrooms are in the Alberici building and near Peterson Lodge. Please remind your members to respect others by leaving the restrooms as clean as or cleaner than they found them. Clothing One of the most important parts of a winter event is to keep warm and dry. Each Scout must be prepared for the weather and temperature and dress appropriately. Weather is changeable, requiring preparedness for almost any condition. A nice day can turn into a blizzard or become rainy and cold. For colder weather, dress in layers: A waterproof outer layer, a warm middle layer and a wicking layer next to the skin. Units should teach participants to avoid working up too much perspiration and to regulate their temperature by removing or adding layers of clothing as needed. Waterproof boots, coats, headgear and gloves/mittens are essential, as are waterproof snow pants or rain pants. For warmth, insulated boots, wool or synthetic socks, hooded coats or wool or synthetic caps, wool shirts and synthetic long underwear are strongly recommended. Cotton clothing is strongly discouraged. Teach your members to use good judgment when preparing for the weekend and to check the weather forecast to insure a safe and comfortable event. Unit leaders should visually inspect each Scout. Prior to every meal, ask every boy if all his clothing is dry. If not, have him change into dry clothes before eating. OKPIK Sleeping System We strongly recommend the use of a sleeping system – to keep warm at night and so to be prepared for the next day. Loose straw bedding is not permitted at this event. We recommend you watch BSA Northern Tier’s OKPIK sleeping system video (http://goo.gl/UnmHf) and show your participants how to use the sleeping system for this event. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 5 Polar Bear Award Participants may earn their Polar Bear Award at this event. Let the staff know at the SPL/Scoutmaster meeting Friday night how many will be preparing and eating lunch outdoors. First Aid Each unit should be prepared with first aid equipment and supplies (readily identifiable) for caring for cold exposure and small wounds. More serious injuries must be brought to the Health and Safety Officer at the event headquarters for immediate treatment or departure to a local hospital. CAMPING Sites and Parking Campsites will be assigned. Please expect to share your site with another unit. You will find out your site and partner unit(s) at check in. Please contact the person listed on the event details page to make a site request or to request to share with a particular unit, if desired. Site preferences will be honored upon advance request if possible. Units are strongly encouraged to carpool. All vehicles are required to be parked in designated parking areas, not in campsites or alongside roads. Trailers may be unhitched and kept in the unit’s campsite. Tent Camping Camping will be in tents or similar outdoor shelters. NO cabins are available. An indoor warming room will be available overnight for campers, if needed. Use of straw bedding is not permitted, except if securely contained in mattresses packed in advance and disposed of after returning home. Equipment Each unit must provide its own camping, cooking and event equipment. Decorate your Klondike sled to theme. Flags Each unit and patrol/den is requested to bring a troop, patrol, crew, pack or den flag. Water Water is available in the camp. However, units may wish to bring their own water with them. Please insure that your Scouts remain hydrated by regularly offering warm drinks. Hydration is critical to participant safety. Ground Fires Ground fires are NOT PERMITTED at this event, except as used by staff for activities. Open fires are allowed in established fire rings only. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 6 Lights Out / Quiet Time The Lights Out / Quiet time listed on the agenda should be strictly followed. Leaders are asked to make sure all members respect this rule. Meals and Cooking A warm Saturday lunch will be served in Peterson Lodge (location subject to change) to those not working on the Polar Bear award. Supplies will be provided to Polar Bear candidates so they can cook their own lunch. Peterson Lodge is unheated this winter and without water. Although the building will be cold, lunch will be out of the wind. The warm lunch will be cooked in the Alberici kitchen for serving at Peterson. The restrooms next to the Peterson Lodge parking lot will be in operation. Volunteer adults are requested to help with lunch logistics, gathering at Alberici at 11:30 AM with vehicles. GLFSC Polar Bear Award Requirements All Troop, Post, Varsity Team or Venturing Crew youth and adults may earn this award. 1. Recipients must camp, using the patrol method, for a minimum of 24 hours consecutively in a tent or other unheated shelter between December 1 and March 31, including cooking and eating a breakfast, a lunch and a dinner. 2. Except in an emergency, the only buildings that may be entered during the 24-hour period are a latrine or a church. Patches are available at the Dauch Scout Center in Detroit. Trash in – Trash out. Remember the Outdoor Code and leave the grounds cleaner than you found it. Please take the trash your unit will generate at this event home with you for disposal there. This includes any straw mattresses your unit may have used. Clean Up and Check Out The unit is responsible to clean up its camping area before check-out. When a unit is ready to check out after the closing ceremony, the youth and adult leader must come to the registration headquarters to receive patches and pick up medical forms. Group Size Patrols, dens and crews must have 5 to 9 youth participants to compete for The Coveted Golden Coffee Thingy, so the events may be scored fairly. Members of different units may be paired together to form a full patrol. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 7 Competition Skills, Activities and Preparation The competition activities will be listed in a following Competition Summary section including the skills and equipment which patrols, crews or dens need to bring and equipment to be provided by the Hodag staff. Prepare your Scouts accordingly. Scoring Scoring will be assessed on Teamwork, Spirit, Creativity and Achievement. The point values of each competitive activity will be listed in the Competition Summary. Spirit Competition Which unit has the most spirit per participant? Size doesn’t matter, but lung power per person, costuming, bling and any other indicators of enthusiasm will count. Show your creativity and passion for this year’s Hodag theme and you may be the proud new custodian of The Golden Coffee Thingy until they return to Hodag 2017. However, this year we have added elements of strategy, collaboration and head-to-head competition while keeping overall competition, skills and your other favorites unchanged. Rules of Play Each patrol is competing independently against every other patrol. Game play is modeled after Magic the Gathering™ but no prior knowledge or experience of MTG is required. Game execution is split into two phases: o “Main Phase” takes place before lunch o “Combat Phase” takes place after lunch Main Phase: o A collection of 6 activities available during the morning only o Objective during this phase is to perform well independently as a patrol and collect “Counter” and “Infect” points to be used strategically during the combat phase o Some activities include a scoring element of best overall that will be scored after all activities are completed and reported Combat Phase: o A collection of 6 activities available during the afternoon only o Objective of this phase is to compete in head-to-head competition against another patrol. Perform your best to earn “Life” points o Some activities include a scoring element of best overall that will be scored after all activities are completed and reported Scoring o All official scoring will be maintained by OA staff running an activity o Each patrol will have a scorecard on which they will monitor their progress o Scoring decisions by the OA staff are final 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 11 2016 HODAG COMPETITION SUMMARY - CONTINUED How to Play What are Points: Counter points: Counter points are gained during Main Phase competition. Counter points are awarded for performance during an activity and used to “Buff” activities during the Combat phase to offer your patrol strategic advantage during head-to-head competition. All patrols are granted 30 counter points to start Combat Phase competition. All patrols participating in Main phase can earn up to 30 additional Counter points Counter points destroyed by an opponent’s Infect point have no value. Unused Counter points are converted to Life points (5:1) at the end of the game Infect points: Infect points are gained during Main Phase competition. Infect points are awarded on a limited basis and are used during the Combat phase to offer your patrol a strategic advantage during head-to-head competition. Infect points destroy all “buffed” Counter points of your opponent. Unused Infect points have no value Life points: Life points are gained during Combat Phase competition. These are the standard points you are accustomed to earning in past Hodag competitions. There are not as many points to earn this year so you must work both harder and smarter for that winning score. Strategy: During lunch: Each patrol will meet to determine how many Counter points earned and how they wish to apply (Buff) them to each Combat activity. Their effect is published on each Combat phase activity. Each patrol will also determine where they wish to “Buff” infect points if they have earned any. OA Staff will process scoring for all Main Phase activities to determine the awarding of Infect points. During the PL Strategy Meeting: Each patrol will be notified of any infect points earned. Each patrol will “Buff” the Combat phase activities by informing OA Staff of their desired strategy. Each patrol will “Buff” Combat phase activities with any earned Infect points. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 12 2016 HODAG COMPETITION SUMMARY - CONTINUED Competition: Combat phase Competition will occur between the first two patrols to arrive at a station. OA Staff will review each patrols scorecard to process Counter and Infect points and announce their effect on the game in play. Game play will commence as soon as possible at the Staff’s discretion If no opponent arrives within 15 minutes of the first patrol being ready, the patrol may run the activity unopposed and will be awarded points on performance. Any points reserved for head-to-head results will be awarded as a win. OA Staff decisions on competition results are final How to win: Accumulate earned Life points from Combat phase game play. Add converted (5:1) unused Counter points (OA Staff performs conversion) The patrol with the most “Life” points at the end of the game wins. Example Game Play Scenario: Patrol 1: 5 members of Patrol 1 participate in every Main Phase activity and perform well earning 25 additional Counter points in addition to the base of 30 Counter points that every patrol is guaranteed to receive. They also earn 2 Infect points based on their performance. During lunch, they strategize and decide that they want to increase their chance on every activity but want to save some Counter points for automatic conversion to Life points just in case they run into another patrol that has Infect points also. Here is what they do: Buff every activity with 5 Counter points, but add an additional 5 (total of 10) on the Madness and Wither activities. o They Buff Wither with 10 Counter points (5 matches, 1 bundle of tinder) o They Buff Madness with 10 Counter points (10 lives in gaga ball) They Buff the Wither and Flash activities with Infect. o They are pretty confident in their fire-starting skills, but they forgot to bring their prepared tinder so they chose to Infect Wither to destroy any advantage their opponent may have and earn materials to use for free. o They chose to Infect Flash because there is not a lot of snow and they are not sure how well their sled will perform and figure they might as well even the competition out. Continued. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 13 2016 HODAG COMPETITION SUMMARY - CONTINUED Patrol 2: 8 members of Patrol 2 participate in every Main Phase activity and perform well earning 20 additional Counter points and 1 Infect point based on performance. During lunch, they decide to increase their chance on every activity and don’t even consider saving any Counter points. Here is what they do: Buff every activity with 5 Counter points, but add an additional 5 (total of 10) on the Madness, Milling, Shroud and Flash activities. o They Buff Madness with 10 Counter points (10 lives in dodge ball) o They Buff Milling with 10 Counter points (reduce their overall time) o They Buff Shroud with 10 Counter points (10 lives in dodge ball) o They Buff Flash with 10 Counter points (reduce their overall time) They Buff the Wither activity with Infect. o They are very confident in their fire-starting skills and remembered their tinder so they chose to Infect Wither to destroy any advantage their opponent may have and earn materials to use for free. Results: Patrol 1 competed against Patrol 2 at Wither. They both had Infect points which destroyed each other’s Counter points. They each received a default of 3 matches but Patrol 1 had to search for tinder. Once they started the competition, Patrol 2 completed the activity first with a time of 1 minute 30 seconds compared to Patrol 1 which completed in 1 minute 45 seconds, declaring Patrol 2 the winner. Preliminary scoring has Patrol 1 with 27 earned Life points and Patrol 2 with 29 earned Life points from competition. However, Patrol 1 reserved 15 Counter points during Buffing which were converted to 3 Life points at (5:1). Adding this to their earned 27 gives them a game winning total of 30 Life points. 2016 Hodag Leaders Guide Page 14 2016 HODAG PATROL SCORECARD Patrol Number: Main Phase AM Name: Station Number Activity Description Counter Points Possible 1 Battle Cry 5 2 Persist 5 3 Snake Toss 5 4 Phasing 5 5 Island Walk 5 6 Reach 5 Counter Points Earned Performance (Distances, Times, etc.) Counter Points Earned All patrols are granted 30 Counter points: + 30 Total Counter Points Available Patrols will be informed of any Infect points earned during the PL Strategy meeting.
