Businessman jailed a Da , fined RM55,000 for offering Bribe to Maritime
Commander
The Session Courts at Kuantan has sentenced a businessman for a day in jail and
RM55,000 fine for offering a RM10,000 bribe to the commander of the eastern
region of the Malaysian Malaysian Maritime Agency. The money was to induce the
commander not to take action against a tugboat and a barge for illegally
transporting sand from Sungai Pahang to Singapore.

Firm fined RM3 Million for Illegal deposit-taking
A High Court Deputy Registrar at Kota Kinabalu, sitting as Sessions Court judge,
has fined an investment company RM3 million for its involvement in illegal deposittaking amounting to RM680,000. The company directors were jailed six years
each.

Appellate Court declares UUCA Provision Unconstitutional
The Court of Appeal has declared that a provision in the Universities and
University Colleges Act 1971 which restricts students from expressing in support
of, or opposing, any political party, was unconstitutional. In a landmark 2-1
majority decision, the three-man panel held that Section 15(5)(a) of the UUCA
was unreasonable and violated freedom of speech.

Ministr mulls Sterner Action on Private Universities
The Higher Education minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has said that his
ministry would make amendments to the Private Institution of Higher Learning
(IPTS) Act to allow for sterner action, including higher fines, on private
universities for various offences. The amendments are expected to be presented
in Parliament next year, he added.
