St Johns Church & Churchyard. Ashley
St John’s Church and Churchyard, Ashley.
Monumental Inscriptions and location plan.
Recorded by Dorothy Camden in 1999
Transcribed by Betty Coops 2004
The following are the monumental inscriptions and memorial plans of Ashley church and
churchyard these were recorded in 1999 prior to and during the construction of the new Chapter
House. These recordings have NOT been checked and validated by myself, so I cannot testify to
their accuracy. Their text and location are recorded only as a guide to their existence, if you feel
that the recording may be inaccurate then it is expected that the verification is yours and yours
alone to confirm whether the transcription is correct.

Ashley is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Newcastle- under-Lyme of Staffordshire, England. According
to the 2001 census it had a population of 508. The village is close to the border of Shropshire, adjacent to
Loggerheads, and is 4 miles (6 km) west north west of Market Drayton
The church of St John the Baptist possess a 17th century tower with the remainder built in 1860-62 by J. Ashdown
of London in a style representative of the13th-14th century. The church is on a raised mound which would leave
one to think originally of Saxon or pre-Christian times.
It is well worth a visit for the spectacular tomb of Sir Gilbert Gerard (d. 1592) and his wife (d. 1608).
Near to the church is a mound as yet unexcavated but thought to a burial ground from the time of the Black Death.

Description of Gerard Monument:- Described by Sir John Betjeman as the largest Elizabethan
manument in an English church.
In 1612 THOMAS, LORD GERARD, built the chapel and the magnificent monument in Burton
alabaster to his father and mother. The life size figures of SIR GILBERT GERARD and LADY
ANNE RADCLIFFE of WIMMERSLEY in LANCASHIRE, lie side by side. He is dressed in the armour of
the period with spurs, helmet abd gauntlets. She is richly dressed with a little dog, a
talbot, nearby. THOMAS kneels at the head, and RADCLIFFE, the younger son at their feet. The
four daughters are carved in relief at the back, and two small figures, children who died in
infancy kneel at the side. The black robed figure lying under the tomb is probably an
earlier GERARD funery figure, carved in their funeral shroud.
The Armorial bearings over the tomb are those of SIR GILBERT and his wife. Those of LADY
ANNE on the right hand side bear the mullet and bars (stars and stripes) of the WASHINGTON
family to whom she was related. The Tudor rose is carved many times on the tomb.
32/ On the Eastern side of Gerard monument.
