Troop 146 Wellsville Earns Community Service Hours by Revitalizing St. Michael’s Evangelical Lutheran Church by Jane Musser Boy Scout Troop 146 and their families help St. Michael’s congregants raise and level headstones that were buried beneath years of dirt and debris Boy Scout Troop 146 and their families help St. Michael’s congregants raise and level headstones that were buried beneath years of dirt and debris Ian, Boy Scout, and Treva Smith, church member, work together to find the edges of a headstone. Steph, and Scout work together to enlarge the headstone area by two inches so it can be leveled and reset. The Bortner Family works together to remove a headstone and enlarge the area. While unearthing one headstone, another headstone was discovered directly underneath it. Mrs. Bortner removes tree roots from the headstone area. The roots may have caused one headstone to slip under the other. Scout, Paul Bortner, uses a headstone to rest. Mr. Bortner removes dirt while his son, Paul, balances the headstone. Barb Spangler and Marg Prosser increase the area of the headstone. Broken headstone with part of broken sandstone base still attached. Scout, Dylan, and his mom load buckets with stone for placing under the headstones. Dawn Grib, church organist, and her daughter work together revitalizing the cemetery. Vicar Micki Kautz supervises and visits during the Wednesday evening cemetery project with Boy Scout Troop 146 and St. Michael’s church members. Boy Scout Leaders level the headstones to be slightly lower than ground level. Brad Myers, Troop 146 Leader, works diligently to level a headstone. Dwayne, Scout Leader, and Jim Spangler, church member work together leveling headstones. Lucas, the youngest worker, crawled right into the lap of Treva Smith, one of the oldest workers. In two hours the volunteers raised and leveled over 70 headstones. St. Michael’s congregation is so thankful for the work of Boy Scout Troop 146 and their families. It is estimated that there are 30 more headstones to raise and level. However, with more probing at empty areas, more headstones may be found buried beneath the ground. th 18 On Wednesday, May Troop 146 and St. Michael’s members will join together to work from 6-8 PM.
