A Call to Service
In celebrating this

to
build
on
Scouting’s legacy of leadership and service,
the Aloha Council has issued a Call to Service
– in Hawaiian, Kāko‘o Ka Hana Aloha – to all
of its Scouting units.
All scouting units have been asked to consult
with community leaders, schools, service
organizations, churches, etc. to find meaningful and lasting community service projects in
which they can work as a team, make a positive impact and bring to life the concept of
service above self. Projects will include, for
example, collaborations with conservation
organizations, community beautification ini-
tiatives and assistance to charitable organizations in accomplishing their mission.
Each participating scouting unit will be presented with a once-in-a-lifetime recognition,
the Kāko‘o Ka Hana Aloha Award.
The Kāko‘o Ka Hana Aloha initiative runs from
February – kicked off at the Aloha Council’s
Centennial Recognition Dinner – to the fall,
when the Aloha Council presents a report to
the governor and county mayors on the
Scouts’ service accomplishments.
All Scouts are encouraged to do a “good
turn” by perpetuating the Scouting movement’s proud 100-year legacy of leadership
and service.

Chairman’s Message
Aloha!
This year, 2010, is a very special year for the Boy
Scouts of America and for the Aloha Council. In
1910, William D. Boyce brought the Boy Scout
program – founded two years earlier in
England by Lord Baden-Powell – to America
and a few months later, D. Howard Hitchcock
formed the first Boy Scout Troop here in
Hawaii – Troop 1 chartered by Punahou
School is still in existence to this very day.
In the 100 years since then, under the leadership
of 37 Aloha Council presidents, Scouting has created
a legacy of leadership and selfless service, immeasurably
enriching hundreds of thousands of lives across Hawaii and the Pacific. The Aloha
Council has grown to cover the world’s largest geographical area, including Guam,
American Samoa, Marianas, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau.
Scouting has benefitted not only the young people of these islands, but the thousands of adult volunteers who have given selflessly over the decades. Many of
our community and business leaders have been scouts and scout leaders, an experience that helped shape them as they learned to do things on their own, set goals,
share with others and enjoy the rewards of achievement.
This 100th anniversary year offers an unprecedented opportunity for us to celebrate
the accomplishments of the past and recommit ourselves to the core values of
Scouting and the development of leaders. It also encourages us to look back at the
rich history of Scouting and begin planning for the next 100 years.
This brochure highlights only a few of the key events that are taking place this year.
I invite you to join us as we celebrate Scouting’s 100th birthday and as we continue
the legacy of “leadership and service.”
