The following morning we headed on towards Murphy Hogback which is a very steep and narrow section of trail. Use caution here because there is no room for two vehicles to pass. At the top of the Hogback is Murphy A, B, and C camp sites. This camp easily has some of the best views but the high winds at the top could be a nuisance for campers. The descent from Murphy’s was another switchback shelf road and at the bottom the terrain slowly changed from steep and twisty to flat and sandy. Here we traveled around the rim often coming within feet of the drop off to the Green River below. After roughly 39 miles, day two driving was complete and we rolled into our final camp at Potato Bottom B. This camp site is in very close proximity of the river but because of the thick undergrowth and steep muddy banks it’s not worth making the walk. That night we enjoyed some juicy sirloins, loaded mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. Rock Competition. We had a bit of a rough weekend, this being my second comp behind the wheel, there is still a definite learning curve. We started on A1 feeling pretty good till I flopped in the second gate while trying to avoid a cone. On A2 we were running through quite well not hitting any cones, only a few “backs” while trying to get through gate 3. I got a bit excited in an off camber spot, and gassed it with my heavy foot, causing a roll over on my right side. Going into A3 we were feeling ok about it “thinking we can’t do any worse.” So I walked right through gate one, into gate two not being able to find the traction to climb up, eventually timing out. On we went to A4. While trying to climb up to gate one my heavy foot struck again and rolling me off a ten foot drop, ending day one. I “red necked” the mounts and missing links PROJECT T his is my 1987 Suzuki Samurai "Rufus." She's my baby. I got her without a scratch on the body 10 years ago. The interior was pristine, and she had just a basic SOA lift. Everything but the engine was perfect. I was able to buy a master rebuild kit for the motor and started rebuilding my first engine. Three engines later, I finally learned what a torque setting was! After finally getting her to run right, I was able to start doing a few other things, like putting 4.16:1 gears in the T-case. It on. But, that soon failed. So, I bought the Trail-Tough missing link set for the front and the rear. I got a set of Toyota axles welded in, and after 9 more engines . . . I was able to “Frankenstein” a 1.6L 16Valve engine together –– more power! It took my friend and me a good 8 hrs. to do the wiring harness. After a year of wheeling with the locked Toyota axles, I finally got power steering. Now she's sitting pretty with a full roll cage, 33" Toyos on 4.10:1 geared Toyota axles, with the 4.16:1 T-case. She's my baby.
