All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com Season Sponsors Billy Elliot 5 WELCOME In our production of Billy Elliot we feature ten young people, including the young man playing Billy and six ‘ballet girls’. Earlier this season, we featured nine young people in A Christmas Story, The Musical and five in It’s a Wonderful Life. The number of talented young people in this community is truly amazing. Recently, at the Goldcorp Stage, we did public readings of plays written by our teenage LEAP students. Playwright Shawn Macdonald, the LEAP program director, commented that the themes in the plays written by this years’ 15 participants “range greatly, but the perspectives are all from a distinctly young person’s point of view… themes busting out against expectations, and the hypocrisy of the adult world.” We also have our annual Music Theatre Intensive for teenagers—both beginners and advanced students —in July and August led by theatre director Peter Jorgensen. Many graduates of this program have gone on to have professional careers including appearing in many of our musicals. At a time when cut backs to education are eliminating many arts programs, it is important for professional companies like ours to introduce programs that ensure that we are developing not only those who might consider theatre as a profession, but also the audience of the future. Of course, funding is important to keep these programs in operation and we appreciate the support of many individuals, corporations, foundations, and government agencies. For example, two recent initiatives, Digital LEAP and the Creative Youth program, have been supported by the TELUS Community Board and the BC Arts Council respectively. Digital LEAP is an expansion of our Learn Early About Playwriting course for youth that allows us to live stream classes to students throughout the Province. It began in April 2016 with a pilot program for students in Smithers. The Creative Youth Theatre program will kick off in October 2016 and will provide youth with access to a yearround creative theatre-making in Arts Club facilities. You can help us fund these programs, and more, with a tax-deductible donation to the Arts Club. As they say, it takes a village... so please consider helping us ensure the arts have a place in the lives of this region’s youth. Bill Millerd & Peter Cathie White Artistic Managing Director & Executive Director The Arts Club thanks Artistic Director’s Circle members and Play Patrons Drs. Doug & Kerstin Conn and Pam & Jim McAdie for pledging their personal support for this production. 6 Billy Elliot ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit arts organization, the Arts Club could not exist without the generosity of our individual donors. Ticket sales cover only a portion of our production costs, so we rely on community gifts to close the gap. Please consider joining us by becoming a member of the Artistic Director’s Circle today. He has released over 40 gold and platinum albums, mostly co-written with his long-term song writing partner, Bernie Taupin. Among these, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was the first album ever to enter the US Billboard Chart at number one. In September 2013, Elton released his 31st studio album, The Diving Board, and in March 2014, the 40th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Elton’s most popular album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, was released. Elton has sold more than 250 million records worldwide, including “Candle In The Wind 1997,” the biggest selling single of all time. His best-loved hit songs include “Rocket Man,” “Your Song,” and “Sacrifice.” Among the many awards and honours bestowed on Elton are five Grammys, a Grammy Legend Award, Tony Award, Best British Male Artist Brit Award, induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Kennedy Center Honor, Legend of Live Award, and 11 Ivor Novello Awards. In the early 1990s he collaborated with lyricist Tim Rice, resulting in the soundtrack to the Walt Disney Pictures blockbuster The Lion King, for which he won an Academy Award. In 1997, The Lion King debuted on Broadway, receiving six Tony Awards, including Best Musical. In March 2000, the Tony Award-winning Aida opened on Broadway and the two productions both won Grammys for Best Musical Show Album. Along with partner David Furnish, Elton produced the Rocket Pictures animated movie Gnomeo & Juliet, which topped the worldwide box office its second week of release. A follow-up, Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes, is now in development. Established in 1992, the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) has raised over $300 million to support HIV/AIDS prevention and service programmes in 55 countries around the globe. Today, EJAF is one of the world’s leading non-profit HIV/AIDS organisations. Elton’s many British accolades include an Honorary Doctorate from the Royal Academy of Music, 2002 and Fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters and Composers, 2004. NUM National Union of Mineworkers. Arthur Scargill The subject of a song of support in the show, Arthur Scargill was the President of NUM during the strike, generally liked and respected by the miners. After individual regions chose to strike, he took the protest nationwide—without putting it to a union vote. Margaret Thatcher The Conservative (or, as in Canada, Tory) Prime Minister of Britain at the time of the strike. Along with Ronald Regan in America, her political philosophy included privatizing many national companies, and allowing the free market to determine wages and working conditions. Michael Heseltine Along with then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Michael Heseltine is derided in the show. He was a Tory member of the Thatcher cabinet who was sometimes touted as her potential successor. After the strike, he kept closing mines as a member of the Board of Trade. Trades Union Congress (TUC) The organization representing most major trade unions. TUC, along with many unions, didn’t support the strike. NUM ignored the lack of support and kept picketing. Cockney/Geordie These terms of mockery and identity are used by the police and miners to taunt each other. Cockneys are from the East End of London, and Geordies hail from the Northeast of England. County Durham Coal country in England’s North East where Billy Elliot takes place.
