YouTube subscribers and made Forbes’ 30
under 30 list. Music producer Ebony Oshunrinde
(@wondagurl) was recently named one of the
“Canadians Making the Nation Cool” by The
New York Times. The 19-year-old wunderkind
has co-produced with Jay Z and Drake. At the
photo shoot, I asked Oshunrinde’s mom when
she knew that her daughter had a passion for
producing music. “When she was a little girl, she
cleaned out her closet and told me she needed to
create a music studio. That’s when I knew!” she
said, laughing. (When I was that age, I created a
prayer corner in my closet, after watching too
many reruns of The Flying Nun.) Aside from
their potential career #inspo—at least for some
people—closets can induce a serious case of envy
in any fashion-loving girl’s heart. Last year, I had
a case of closet covetousness after I saw pictures
of the ELLE UK fashion cupboard. With a modest budget, we launched the #ELLECanadaCloset
last fall. Like most women, we outgrew our
space. With the help of über-talented designer
Christine Dovey, we now have a #dreamcloset.
When we first spoke about the project—and I
showed her the area she had to work with—
Dovey replied: “Are you asking me to create
girlie heaven? I’m in!” In about six weeks, she
transformed our space into what she describes
as “glamorous, feminine and a little bistro.” (See
page 66.) To celebrate our opening, we invited
the charming ladies from The Social. We also
had another special guest that day: Sabrina
Fuoco. The five-time cancer survivor is this
year’s Wellspring Model Search winner, and her
story is remarkable. (See “Catwalk Crusade” on
page 70.) “Over the years, cancer has stolen my
hair, my energy levels, chunks of my body, a few
of my perfectly functioning organs and sometimes even my sanity, but I will not allow it to
steal my life—or my sense of fashion,” says
Fuoco. Hear, hear!
