Dear Executive,
2005 is a year for milestones in the CDMA wireless industry: it marks the tenth anniversary of the first commercial
cdmaOne™ launch and the fifth anniversary of the first commercial CDMA2000® deployment.
In addition, the Americas Congress also celebrates its tenth year in 2005. On behalf of the CDMA Development Group
(CDG) and the Institute for International Research (IIR), I am pleased to announce that the 3G CDMA Americas Congress
will take place on September 12-14, 2005, at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
The Americas Congress has grown to become one of the industry’s most respected annual events, capturing broader
attendance every year, increased media attention, greater support from leading wireless companies, and an exposition of the
top infrastructure, handset, test equipment, and component manufacturers, content and application providers, and related
systems and services vendors.
We have developed a great agenda and many of the leading operators, equipment vendors, analysts, application developers,
and content providers will share their perspectives on the outlook and new directions for 3G CDMA and the wireless
marketplace in the Americas. Keynotes and featured presenters confirmed thus far are Robert Odendaal, CEO of Bell
Mobility; Mitch Lasky, CEO of JAMDAT; Daniel Kranzler, Chairman and CEO of MFORMA Group; Byung Moo (Brian) Kim,
President of SK Telecom International; Adel Bazerghi, Vice President of Wireless Technology at Bell Mobility; Larry Lang,
Vice President and General Manager of Mobile Wireless at Cisco Systems; Tadashi Onodera, President at KDDI; Dr. Won Jin
Park, Vice President of the New Business and Strategic Planning Group at KTF; Timo Ihamuotila, Senior Vice President and
General Manager of the CDMA business unit at Nokia; Adrian Steckel, Chief Executive Officer, Unefon and John Stratton,
Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer at Verizon Wireless.
In addition to the keynotes, presentations and panels during the main conference, the Americas Congress will also feature a
pre-Congress symposium and workshop, providing an in-depth look at topics of key interest, and the eleventh annual Test
Forum, the premier event for test and measurement professionals.
We are looking forward to an exciting celebration in Miami. I hope you will make plans to join us.
Sincerely,
Perry M. LaForge
Executive Director
CDMA Development Group
The 3G CDMA Americas Congress is delighted to
welcome the Honorable Michael K. Powell, Chairman of
the Federal Communications Commission from 20012005, as a special guest speaker.
Mr. Powell’s speech will offer a glimpse into the future,
clarifying the world of bewildering technological change
and articulating how changes in media, music telephony,
and wireless are transforming how we work, play and
care for our citizens.
The Digital Revolution
Who could have imagined that the whole of human communication could be
reduced to an alphabet of two: zero and one? Digitalization is revolutionizing our
world, putting much greater power into the hands of people. Newspapers have
personal technology sections; consumer electronics gadgets top consumer wish
lists for holidays and birthdays; and words like "WIFI," "broadband" and "instant
messaging" have entered the cultural lexicon as reflections of how rooted
innovative technologies are becoming in our lives. The march of technology is
relentless: in the near future you will watch videos on your cell phone, program
your television from the internet, and make unlimited phone calls from virtually
any electronic device anywhere anytime. As well, the coming generation of
youngsters will provide us with the very first generation of children who grew up
in an entirely digital age. How will this affect the way they process information
from previous generations? What does raising a generation of children literally
"plugged-in" from birth mean for education and learning, for parenting, for the
workforce, for society and for the future?
The Honorable Michael K. Powell served as Chairman of the Federal
Communications Commission at a time of revolutionary change in technology
and communications. He was appointed by President Clinton in 1997 and was
designated Chairman by President Bush in 2001.
As Chairman, Mr. Powell created the right regulatory conditions to stimulate the
deployment of powerful technologies that put more power in the hands of the
2
people. He clearly saw the importance of the rise of digital technologies and the
impact they would have on our lives, from health care to education. As
Chairman, he focused on initiatives that encouraged market-driven solutions that
promoted consumer interests and drove innovative approaches to getting
broadband technology out to people—such as broadband over power lines, WiFi
Hotspots, Cable broadband and DSL. These competitive alternatives expanded
affordable broadband options to all Americans and helped narrow the digital
divide. From campaigning for the right to keep your phone number when
switching wireless carriers, to fighting to block unwanted telemarketing calls with
a Do-Not-Call list, to cautiously policing the airwaves of indecency, Mr. Powell
put consumers on the forefront in this exciting and dynamic marketplace.
Chairman Powell previously served as the Chief of Staff of the Antitrust Division
in the Department of Justice. In that capacity, he advised the Assistant Attorney
General on substantive antitrust matters and managed the division.
Before joining the Antitrust Division, Mr. Powell was an associate in the law firm
of O’Melveny (“O-MELL-van-ee”) & Myers, and just prior to joining the firm
clerked for the Honorable Harry T. Edwards, Chief Judge of the United States
Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.
Before starting his legal career, Mr. Powell served as a policy advisor to Secretary
of Defense, Richard B. Cheney. In addition, his experience includes military
service as an armored cavalry officer in the United States Army. While on duty,
Mr. Powell was seriously injured in a training accident and—after spending a year
in the hospital—was retired from service.
Mr. Powell graduated in 1985 from the College of William and Mary with a
degree in Government. He earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law
Center.
Mr. Powell currently serves on the Board of Visitors of both the College of William
and Mary and the Georgetown University Law Center. He is currently serving
three months as a Senior Fellow of the Communications and Society Program of
the Aspen Institute.

CDMA2000 Evolution Path to Future Networks
and Converged Services
Pre-congress workshops provide an in-depth look at topics of key interest.
8:00 am Registration
This workshop takes place from 9:00 am-12:00 pm with a break for refreshments.
CDMA2000 networks are rapidly evolving to all-IP next-generation systems.
Already operators are deploying CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. 0, delivering a variety
of advanced services at higher speeds than any other WAN technology. Soon they
will migrate to Rev. A, which offers even higher data rates, improved system
capacity and enhanced QoS to deliver next-generation services such as instant
multimedia, video telephony and VoIP, all while reducing the cost of delivery.
This workshop will discuss the steps operators need to take to migrate from
CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO Rev. 0 to 1xEV-DO Rev. A and beyond.
• Overview of current CDMA2000 standards (1X, 1xEV-DO Rev. 0, 1xEV-DO Rev.
A), their benefits and real-life performance
• Network upgrades required in migrating to 1xEV-DO systems
• Enabling higher-speed uplink and downlink, and resulting services and
applications that can be offered
• Implementation of VoIP
• What lies beyond 1xEV-DO Rev. A?
