Adam Giambrone: Ward 18
One of the many frustrations faced by Giambrone is
the lack of funding for the TTC. With inferior provincial
and federal involvement, it is the least- funded transit
system in North America or the Western World per
rider, but he is still hopeful that his dreams for the ideal
public transit system will become a reality. Adam was
pleased to tell us that Dufferin Station is being
renovated. Re-doing all of the subway stations, while
protecting valuable heritage is only of of the priorities
for the future of the TTC. With new streetcars, light rail
lines and Transit City, it will hopefully get to the point
that an on-schedule bus will always arrive within
fifteen minutes of one that just pulled away. No one
living in the 416 area would any longer be
disadvantaged by not owning a car. By 2020, the vision
includes the extension of the subways, eight rail lines
under Transit City, renewal of the Scarborough Rapid
Transit lines and it's expansion up to Sheppard. Adam
sees "a TTC that's increasingly representative of
Toronto's workforce..., more in tune with customer
service." Aside from making the transit in the city
rider-friendly, the other goal is to be the green leader in
North America. The hope is that the TTC will
eventually buy 100% of their power from renewable
resources, increasing use of hybrids and biodiesel and
cutting the consumption of power and other utilities.
This includes retrofitting buildings, builiding new ones
to higher standards and ensuring all of them are more
energy-efficient. Giambrone has a long, hard road
ahead of him, but this ambitious young man seems
optimistic and enthusiastic about embracing the
challenge.

So it was Music Gallery’s 9th anniversary back in
February of this year. What’s Music Gallery right? I’m
glad you asked but before I demystify M.G., I’d like you
to answer these first:
Do you experience:
A diminished ability to taste flavor while listening to
music?
An absence of stimuli when listening to music?
Being too stressed or nervous while listening to the
radio?
No awareness of the importance and usefulness of
music?
Regardless of how you answered, there is a live music
venue in the city that will bring positive shock to your
system in a subtle at times obnoxious but always
lusciously NEW way. That’s what Music Gallery is

Recreational hockey insights.
port injuries and chronic sport-induced aches
and
pains
are
commonplace
amid
the
recreational sporting scene. In a sport like hockey,
there is no doubt that such injuries, aches and
pains are in abundance as the sport involves speed,
force, agility, contact, falls on hard surfaces, falls
into hard surfaces and taking blows from flying
pucks and fast skating players losing their footing.
Are you ready to play hard in the upcoming playoff
season? My recommendation is that in order to
keep injuries at bay and ensure one’s own optimal
safety while playing hockey, each and every hockey
player – especially the adult recreational ones –
should partake in a sport-specific strength and
conditioning program. There is no better time start
than now.
S
Adult recreational athletes are the most commonly
injured athletes and the ones more likely to take the
hardest blows in sport. The unconditioned adult
recreational body is not ready for trauma. The core
is generally weak in adult recreational athletes
leaving their joints at risk for tugging, pulling,
wearing and tearing and other unforeseen chronic
aches and pains. Common in hockey are rotator
cuff tears (shoulder) and various tendinitis,
fractures, concussions, swollen meniscus (knee),
sprained ankles, and strained low backs. On the
contrary, many adult recreational or semirecreational athletes go their whole lives without
having many of these commonplace trauma,
overuse and chronic repetitive-strain injuries. Why
Plumber’s To Do List
is this?
Are you ready for the playoffs?
“Core training” is quite a sought after topic in
popular fitness literature today – and for good
reason. Your core is your centre and if you have a
weak core, you better beware. Your limbs and all of
their attachments depend on your core to help them
to work properly over their allowable range-ofmotion. Your core muscles involve the deep and
superficial muscles of your trunk and are muscles
that stabilize and align your whole body. If your
core is in a weakened state and not conditioned
specifically for the sport you are playing right now,
you are at risk for an injury and probably already
have chronic sport-induced aches and pains. Take
a look right now at yourself in the mirror – how does
your centre look to you? How does your posture

Training your core for hockey involves a variety of
movements for example, rotations, lateral bends,
forward flexion and back extensions all requiring
stabilization of the shoulder blades while executing
the exercises. Look for the article “Six ideal core
training exercises for hockey players and other
sport enthusiasts”, in the next issue of Bloor Street
News. In the meantime, I highly recommend that you
take up a mind-body exercise discipline like Pilates
or Yoga once or twice a week.

Plumbers also repair breaks and replace old piping. A
plumber may be called to unclog a toilet, fix a leaky
faucet, or to check on old pipes which may be warped or
leaking. Some of these tasks can be accomplished by an
amateur, but others do require a professional plumber,
along with his or her specialized plumbing tools. Things
like drains and repiping can also get quite complicated,
and plumbers sometimes uncover unpleasant surprises
like rot during their course of their work, which may
necessitate getting another professional involved to fix
the problem.
