Alumnae inspire
next generation
Dear Alumnae,
Community, Reverence, Service and
Leadership: our Ursuline Core Values. The
heart of who we are as a community. These
values are so important to our students, faculty and staff, and all members of our faith
community. These values guide us, inspire us
and challenge us every day. The SHA alumnae board treasures these values as well.
Community: Our alumnae board is a
community. We are graduates of all ages,
Jessica Moore Spalding ‘99
many experiences, and fond memories of our
time on campus. We work together, we plan
together, and we promote the Annual Fund to
encourage everyone to give back so that future generations of Valkyries
will have the same wonderful experiences. Each board member is assigned
a class year to connect with those class reps and encourage them to stay
connected to our Sacred Heart community.
Reverence: We open each meeting with a thoughtful prayer to center
our minds and hearts on our faith. We pray for guidance from the teachings of St. Angela.
Service: Giving back to Sacred Heart Academy and to our community
is so important to us. We spend countless hours planning our alumnae
events. Everyone contributes her own special talents to make our events
wonderful. This year we have challenged our board to participate in community service events outside of SHA. We recently formed a walk team
for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. We had team shirts made
and met bright and early to walk through downtown Louisville. Our commitment to community service was instilled at our time at SHA, and we
look forward to participating in many more events throughout the year.
We hope you will join us!
Leadership: Our board is comprised of amazing graduates from all
decades who are leaders in the Louisville community. As graduates of such
a remarkable school that educates women to be “strong women of great
faith,” we bring these skills to the board as we promote and lead the
alumnae association. We are leaders by being Valkyries. Our education,
experiences, and opportunities set us apart.
Our alumnae board understands the value of our Ursuline education and the many other gifts we received when we were students. We
understand it’s our time to give back, and our responsibility to help future
Valkyries keep our legacy strong. I hope you will join us at our events, participate in the alum phone-a-thon, and make a gift to our Annual Fund.
We challenge you to reflect on the Core Values and take action to live
them today.
Go Valkyries!

The choir would go on to have three more solo performances: an
impromptu performance in the St. Florian Abbey, a performance in
Vienna in the Schonbrunn Palace and another in St. Nicholas Church
in the Old Town of Prague, Czech Republic. It was such a thrill to
see Sacred Heart Academy’s name on flyers throughout these cities
advertising their performances. Each performance ended with “Dear
Sacred Heart” and brought tears to my eyes. As an alumna, it was
a great moment of pride to hear my school song performed at such
esteemed places in front of audiences made up of so many different
nationalities.
This is the second international trip for the SHA choir department
in three years. In the summer of 2011, they performed in the Rome
International Music Festival and sang at the Vatican. In years they are
not traveling out of the country, they travel to performances in the
United States. This spring they will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York
City in the choral nationals.
These trips demonstrate a commitment to the arts and cannot happen
without a school administration that encourages the arts; parents who
support their daughters’ desire to perform; students who work hard
to hone their talent, and a choral director who seeks out opportunities
for her students to shine. Sacred Heart Schools has long been
dedicated to the arts as evidenced by the strong performing and
visual arts programs in all four schools on the Ursuline Campus.
SHA’s performing arts program continues to grow. Mrs. Schurman
now directs three choirs: Bel Canto for freshmen singers, A Cappella
with more than 60 members, and the Madrigals. This year Dr. Anna

Sacred Heart Schools hosted its third

Scholarships provide promising students with
opportunities to reach their full potential.
“The real impact of a scholarship cannot
be measured in dollars,” said Dr. Cynthia
Crabtree, president of Sacred Heart Schools.
“It’s the role a scholarship plays in the life
of a student that really matters. Many of
our students would not be here – would
not be able to pursue their academic,
artistic or athletic passions or grow
in faith — without the generosity of
scholarship benefactors, and for that we

SHA Alums take part
in Heart Walk
In September, members of the SHA Alumnae
Board took part in the annual Heart
Walk sponsored by the American Heart
Association. Did you know coronary heart
disease is the number one killer of women?
Take care of your heart! Taking part in events
such as the Heart Walk is just one way the
Alumnae Board lives out the Ursuline Core
Value of Community. Pictured: back - Kathy
