Graduates honored at the 136th Commencement Community • reverence • service • leadership So Many Reasons To Be Thankful SHA Alumnae Board 2013-2014 Vice President President Jessica Moore ‘99 Laura Fenton Wince ‘02 Dear “Sisters”, Vice President Secretary Thank you, Jesus! Tara Kremer ‘89 I say that often, and I say it with true feeling. I thank Jesus often for all that He has given me throughout my life, including the opportunity to work on the beautiful Ursuline Campus as alumnae director for my beloved Sacred Heart Academy. I am blessed and I am thankful! Here are just a few reasons why this year alone I’ve thanked Jesus: • The nearly $23 million in scholarships offered to the Class of 2014 Alice Cowley ‘02 Class Rep Assignments Nannette Mershon ‘67 • The four state titles in golf, swimming, lacrosse and tennis • Witnessing the seamless integration of iPads and other technology into today’s classroom • A healthy enrollment of nearly 850 girls • Witnessing our students demonstrate their love of their adored teacher, Alvin Guenthner, by raising money for student financial aid in his memory • Students, faculty and parents who traveled to Appalachia and far off countries to serve those less fortunate • Our choir traveling to Salzburg, Vienna and Prague for a nine-day singing tour, including the “Mozart! Choir Festival” • SHA alumnae in the press for college, military and professional accomplishments, appointments to boards, service to church and community, college athletic feats, and much more • The myriad of alumnae who took part in the annual SHA Career Day • The more than 500 alumnae – Valkyrie Sisters – ranging in age from 22 to 73 who came “home” for the Friday night reunion weekend kick-off reception. And the many more who attended the Golden Grads luncheon, individual class gatherings, and closing Mass • For the many alumnae, parents and faculty/staff who played a vital role in SHA meeting its Annual Fund goal • For the dedicated alumnae who volunteer their time, talents and treasures as board members and Class Reps Lastly, I must thank Jesus for my treasured friends and family. You see, this past Christmas they surprised me with an incredible gift. In my honor, they established the SHA Nannette Mershon Alumnae Scholarship that benefits a student who aspires to be a Valkyrie, but does not have the financial means to attend our school. What an amazing gift bestowed on me! But, more importantly, what an amazing gift my friends and family are giving a young woman! I am so grateful to my friends and family for this gift – and for establishing it during my lifetime when I can witness the good it is doing for young women, Catholic education and my “Dear Sacred Heart”. 1950s Dana Craig ’87 (83, 87) Suzanne Schimpeler ’58 (57, 58, 59) Kim Brossart Brown ’88 (85, 88) Sr. Lorna Weiler, OSU ’58 (58) Tara Kremer ’89 (86, 89) 1960s 1990s Martha Schulten Martin ’65 (64, 65, 56) Beth Martin Doyle ’91(90, 91) Linda Gies Carter ’66 (66, 61, 55) Allison McGuire Gibson ’92 (92, 93) Joyce King Jennings ’68 (60, 68) Amanda Dearing Walukas ’94 (52, 94) Nannette Mershon ’67 (67, 69) Leah Stiebling Hawkins ’95 (53, 95) Annie O’Connell ’95 (96, 97) 1970s Erin Hall Rasinen ’98 (54, 98) Nancy Donovan Pratte ’70 (70, 71) Jessica Moore ‘99 (99) Denise Nevitt Golden ’73 (72, 73) Anne Callahan French ’75 (62, 74) 2000s Susan Mullin Toutant ’75 (63, 75) Allison Hartley ’00 (04, 05) Pam Higgs Martin ’75(76, 79) Courtney Young Green ’00 (00, 10) Kathy Boswell Knotts ’77 (50, 77) Melanie Miranda Thornton ’01 (01, 11) Susan Schultz Gibson ’78 (51, 78) Laura Fenton Wince ’02 (02, 12) Alice Cowley ’02 (03, 13) 1980s Channing Underhill ’06 (06, 09) Julie McDonald Olsen ’80 (80, 81) Brittany Miller ’07 (07, 08) Kim Karem Washle ’84 (82, 84) The Sacred Heart Academy Alumnae Association is comprised of more than 10,000 women who have graduated from Sacred Heart Academy since it was founded in 1877. Sacred Heart Academy alumnae traveled from the north, south, east and west of the continent to spend the weekend with their Valkyrie sisters. The festivities began June 6 with an invitation-only reception hosted by Dr. Cynthia Crabtree, president of Sacred Heart Schools, and Mary Lee McCoy, principal of SHA, for alumnae who are loyal and consistent donors to the Annual Fund. The official reunion weekend kicked off with an all-class reception in the gym. Music from the decades, class photos, trolley rides around the Ursuline Campus, browsing memory tables that held yearbooks and other memorabilia from years past, shopping in the SHA campus store, and walking the halls of SHA kept alumnae busy all evening. The Class of 1964 was welcomed into the Golden Grads club on Saturday at a luncheon at Audubon Country Club. Graduates from 1940 to 1964 attended this special luncheon that included remarks by Mary Claire O’Daniel ’14, granddaughter of Claire Fensterer Lococo ‘64. Saturday afternoon and evening was also hopping with individual class parties for the Class of 1964 to the Class of 2009! On Sunday, many alumnae and their families attended Mass in the Ursuline Motherhouse Chapel. Guests and the Ursuline Sisters in attendance gave thanks for the many blessings of SHA. Following Mass, guests were invited to a complimentary continental breakfast at Top Photo: Polly Martin Jones ’94 and the beautiful Ursuline Arts Center (formerly Ursula Auditorium). her husband, Andrew, with their son and daughter and the SHA Valkyrie, Kelly Teta. Many volunteered they have made formal plans for SHS to receive a gift by will, insurance or trust from their estate. We are most grateful to these wonderfully generous friends who will be part of our St. Angela Merici Circle, documented in our 2014 annual report and invited to a special reception hosted by Dr. Cindy Crabtree, president of Sacred Heart Schools. I know there are more who have remembered Sacred Heart in the future, but have not informed us. By letting us know, you will encourage others to say, “You know if she did that, I can too!” Will you consider making a commitment to do the same? Gifts by will, trust, IRA, or gift annuities will “do much good for others” as St. Angela stated. I am happy to talk with you about this special way to remember your Dear Sacred Heart. U.S. Postage PAID Louisville, KY Permit No. 1644 3177 Lexington Road Louisville, KY 40206 A member of Sacred Heart Schools Sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville Amy Baker Receives Loretta P. Mudd Award for Excellence in Teaching Amy Baker, chair of the SHA Art Department, is the recipient of the distinguished SHA Loretta Peter Mudd Excellence in Teaching Award. The award recognizes a fulltime teacher who demonstrates dedication to every student’s learning and full human development. One nominator said of Ms. Baker, “I was experiencing a major period of self-doubt. I was afraid to push myself. I could not find inspiration and I was extremely close to quitting. Ms. Baker would not let me give up on myself or succumb to my fear of failure. She pushed me into an amazing journey.” Another said, “Ms. Baker has fostered my growth, congratulating me on my triumphs and understanding and comforting me on my failures. She has the wisdom to both understand and explain that failure is a monumental part of our growth as humans.” Ms. Baker has been teaching at SHA for nearly 13 years. She teaches pottery, jewelry and accessory design, and International Baccalaureate art classes. In addition, she serves on the Sacred Heart Schools Diversity Council and is moderator of the Farm to Fork Club, which includes teaming with Sacred Heart Preschool students to tend a garden on the Ursuline Campus. She has a bachelor’s degree in studio art from the University of Kentucky and a master’s degree in teaching from Spalding University. Ms. Baker is also a Girl Scout leader, volunteers for Anchal Project and is a working artist with Pixley Knob Artists Guild.
