THE ANIMALS
James Franco, acteur, réalisateur et scénariste, présente The Animals.
Ce premier show en France de son travail artistique rassemble différents mediums: peinture, photographie et video,
chacun étant le résultat dʼune documentation ou de performances éphémères quʼil a composé avec un groupe dʼindividus
étrangement costumés en animaux. The Animals représente des figures androgynes portant des masques vénitiens aux allures
carnavalesques. Ces personnages à lʼapparence asexuée et simpliste dégagent quelque chose dʼenfantin, qui communiquent plus
par la gestuelle que par la parole.
Engagés dans différentes activités physiques, aussi bien dans la danse que dans le Dodgeball, ils utilisent ces actions comme des
modes dʼinteractions non-verbales. Recouverts, pendant leurs activités, de peinture sèche, The Animals laissent des traces de
gestuelles derrière chacun de leur mouvement. De leurs performances, sur des toiles dʼimages imprimées et préalablement mises en
oeuvre, résulte un travail dʼaccumulation aux multiples couches dʼinformations successives.
James Francoʼs exhibition, titled The Animals, brings together paintings, photographs, and video.
Each medium acts as documentation or ephemera of performances he composed, which involved a group of individuals wearing
animal-type costumes. The “animals” represented androgynous figures and wore Venetian masks, lending the characters a carnivallike appearance. These sexless beings capture something essential and childlike - creatures communicating through behavior rather
than speech.
Engaging in a variety of physical activities, such as dance and dodge ball, they used these actions as modes of non-verbal
interaction. The “animals,” covered with wet paint during these improvisational activities, left gestural traces of their movements
behind. They performed on top of canvasses printed with images from earlier enactments, which resulted in work stacked with
multiple layers of information.
