blade quality
In 2013, Wood-Mizer celebrated a
significant anniversary: ten years of ISO
9001 certified band blade production.
The ISO 9001 certification is a series of
international standards that describes
the requirements for a quality
management system for organizations
and enterprises.
The first time an international audit
of Wood-Mizer’s blade production in
Poland was fully implemented and
completed in accordance to the ISO
9001 standards was in March of 2003.
Since then, annual external audits have
confirmed Wood-Mizer’s commitment
to the strictest implementation of ISO
9001 demands, and certificates were
renewed in 2006, 2009 and 2012.
The last international commission
visited and evaluated Wood-Mizer in
November of 2012. During the last ten
How does this impact WoodMizer Blade customers?
At each stage of production, the quality
control system was introduced, starting
from the ordering and supplement of
steel and ending with the actual
technological process, packaging,
storage, sale, and up to the delivery of
the product to the customers and
further service.
Here are the key places in the
production where Wood-Mizer technicians check the control measurements:
1) Quality control of incoming steel
after its delivery to the plant
2) Measuring and testing the quality
of the material in the laboratory
3) Measurements during tooth press
punching
4) Measurements during the
induction hardening of the teeth
5) Measurements in tooth setting,
grinding and cutting the band
6) Tests of the strength of the weld on
the bending machines
7) Selective testing of blade
workability on the Wood-Mizer
sawmills.

Coming in
2014
At Ligna 2013, Wood-Mizer unveiled the
first prototype of a new, wide blade
sawmill that will be introduced to the
market in 2014. Designed for more
extreme and rugged sawing conditions,
the heavy-duty machine was well
received.
According to Wood-Mizer, the project
was developed in cooperation with a
well-known and highly respected wide
band sawmill manufacturer in order to
offer a product to customers
around the world.

Hydraulic
bed extension
Wood-Mizer has developed a bed
extension with hydraulic log handling
features to help with the production of
long timbers up to 13.5m long that many
people require for such projects as roof
construction.
This extension can be added to
hydraulic mills from the LT20, LT40 or
LT70 series. The bed extension’s
hydraulic hoses connect to the hydraulic

This new material is designed to be a
blade that delivers high performance for
production wood cutting. Longer sawing
life is possible due to the Rc hardness of
67 on the tooth edge, especially while
cutting abrasive and exotic wood
species. The high alloy backing material
of the blade offers a combination of
durability and fatigue resistance,
enabling multiple sharpenings for the
life of the blade. This blade is made to be
slightly wider than its size class, which
provides more strength and stability in
the blade, resulting in faster sawing and
more stable cuts.
Wood-Mizer’s Bi-metal blade offering
covers a wide range of cutting
applications and species. Blades come
factory-set and are delivered “ready-tocut” right out of the box. These new
blades can also be sharpened with
Wood-Mizer’s line of CBN sharpeners for
extended life and optimal cost
effectiveness.

The simplest LT10 sawmill is
commonly used by farmers and estate
owners, while the LT15 series is well
suited for entry-level business. At the
show, the LT15 sawmill with an electric
motor and debarker was also equipped
with the MP100 log moulder/planer.
This kit is used in building projects for
producing planed beams and shaped
columns.
The LT20 series was presented in two
versions: a classic LT20 sawmill with an
electric motor and debarker and a
stationary LT20B on the low segmented
bed with a remote control. This version is
suitable for medium-sized enterprises
because the remote control feature
reduces operator fatigue, and boosts
overall productivity.
The famous mobile Wood-Mizer
sawmills was represented by the semi22

industrial LT70 series sawmill with a 42
hp diesel engine. This machine is
equipped with larger diameter
bandwheels, a powerful hydraulic
system for log loading, and provides
high-speed cutting combined with
minimal maintenance.
For timber producers who are looking
for solutions to increase productivity,
Wood-Mizer offers the EG300 edger
with two circular saws, control panel and
laser pointers. Another advantage of the
EG300 is that the machine can be easily
transformed into a multirip with five
circular saws.
As the only band sawmill
manufacturer making its own blades,
Wood-Mizer presented the full spectrum
of blades solutions in three series: the
famous DoubleHard, the Stellite-tipped
RazorTip and the budget SilverTip
blades. Currently the company
manufactures blades in five tooth
profiles for different types of wood and
in different widths (32-75 mm) and
thicknesses (1-1.4 mm). Also WoodMizer demonstrated a wide range of
blade sharpeners based on CBNtechnology.
Thus innovative solutions of WoodMizer are able to ‘make more out of
wood’: to increase the efficiency and
competitiveness of timber production.

Wood-Mizer has announced the
formation of an African Operations
division that will coordinate future sales
and service efforts on the continent as a
part of its ongoing strategic efforts to
meet global demand.
Wood-Mizer’s portable and industrial
thin-kerf sawmills and secondary
processing solutions together with its inhouse range of narrow band saw blades
have served as the key building blocks of
the group’s successes recorded in the
global sawmilling sector to date.
Wood-Mizer’s presence on the African
continent dates back two decades
before the 2011 decision to launch a
Wood-Mizer subsidiary branch based on
the continent. Key drivers of this move
were to improve pricing, increase range,
provide better service and spare parts
availability and to build an experienced
team that understands the needs of the
African market.
Wood-Mizer’s
commitment towards sustainable
resource management and the benefits
that its range holds for broad socioeconomic development on the continent
also encouraged the decision.

decision by Wood-Mizer LLC to
restructure the company at a global
level to allow for an African Operations
division.
Speaking to Wood-Mizer LLC CEO,
Richard Vivers and Wood-Mizer
Industries managing director, Robert
Bagiński, they shared that the
restructuring was underpinned by two
basic driving points.
“The continued growth recorded on
the continent has convinced the WoodMizer LLC board that Africa will become
a key priority for the group going into the
future. The successes achieved by JJ
Oelofse and his inspired team also
made it clear that they are the vehicle
through which Wood-Mizer will be able
to strengthen the brand on the
continent,” Richard Vivers said.
“JJ Oelofse’s appointment as Chief

Wood-Mizer releases the new
WM4000
high-tech sawmill
Wood-Mizer has announced the release
of their new WM4000 thin-kerf
industrial sawmill, which they are
calling the ‘next generation’ in sawmills.
The WM4000 combines the profitability
enhancements of thin-kerf blades with
productivity advances in automated
sawing technology to create an ideal
solution for wood producers in the again
growing timber industry.
Similar in overall design to WoodMizer’s industrial WM3500 sawmill, the
WM4000 features are more heavy duty
and more productive in many ways.
New control station design
Productivity starts with the operator.
With this fact in mind, the WM4000
features a new 7.5” (19cm) HMI touchscreen which presents more
information to the sawyer. Board and
cant sizes are displayed along with
current head height, feed position, and
blade power. Amongst a host of new
productivity-enhancing features, the
sawyer’s favorite has been the Auto-Cut
10
WOOD-MIZER TODAY 2013 AUTUMN
feature, which remembers the location
of the start and end of the log. Instead of
the sawyer overshooting either end of
the log, the sawhead knows how far to
cut, and where to return to, and as a
result spends more time sawing.
The new deluxe joysticks provide the
operator with precise control of all
sawing and log handling functions, and
feature proportional hydraulic speed
control. They can be configured to save
two different sawyers’ personal joystick
preferences.
The sawing head
A new servo motor controls the vertical
head height, and increases the head
up/down speed and positioning
precision. Larger blade guide rollers
provide the blade more support in the
cut.
Hydraulics
The hydraulic speed is adjusted
proportionally to the operator’s pressure
applied to the joysticks during use.

• Powered taper rollers.
Sawmill bed and material
handling system
The stability and durability of the mill is
increased thanks to the bed rails and
frame now featuring 50% more steel. A
new built-in powered board conveyor
automatically turns itself off after
moving a board or cant from the sawmill
towards an edger or resaw, reducing
daily power consumption.
New! Maintenance and
troubleshooting
The HMI touch-screen computer comes
with a robust set of diagnostic
capabilities, and troubleshooting the
system can be accomplished via the
onboard Ethernet connection.
The WM4000 has taken the flagship
position as Wood-Mizer’s most
productive thin-kerf sawmill on the
market, providing new opportunities for
the larger profit margins that WoodMizer has historically offered the lumber
industry.

Three Wood-Mizer
sawmills help you
to diversify your
woodworking
business
Three ideas for small
sawmill business
Understanding that small businesses will play a big role in the recovery of
Europe's economies, Wood-Mizer took a long look at what most of its
customers are looking for and carefully analysed feedback from its
representatives in over 100 countries.
In addition, the aim was to assess exactly how the economic crisis has
affected sawmilling enterprises. The exercise revealed that as in previous
recessions small companies generally adjust to changing economic conditions,
therefore suffering less than most big operations.
Indeed, they have responded with remarkable flexibility, cutting operating
costs and labour hours and/or switching to the conversion of lumber into
differing new product lines. Only a minority of Wood-Mizer owners left the
wood processing trade and sold their mills, which are always saleable second
hand.
Equally flexible, Wood-Mizer recognised that favourable opportunities
warrant greater support for small woodworking operations in the form of a
series of new, improved and dedicated mills. Each sawmill is designed as a
reliable and crucial pivot to effective timber production and produces more
valuable products from fewer logs. The dramatic response comes in the form of
three production concepts served by three wood-processing machinery
groups…
I N N O V A T I O N
The SLP2 reduces costs
while increasing efficiency
At Ligna 2013, Wood-Mizer exhibited a
new concept for converting small logs
into boards efficiently and quickly.
Wood-Mizer’s SLP2 is an automated
line made up of three sawmills
connected by a material handling
system. The SLP2 line processes logs
10-40cm in diameter and 1.2-3.6m in
length into any square material, and is
primarily used to produce pallet
lumber.
The case history
Quite often businesses do not have a
way to make a profit from low-value
small logs. And in many cases, such
logs are considered only good for
firewood or mulch. With this problem in
mind, in 2007 Wood-Mizer developed a
system of products that could process
small logs into a commercial product
that is marketable and profitable.
This first successful SLP line was
made possible through the use of
Wood-Mizer’s well known narrow-band
blade sawmill technology that they
have employed worldwide since 1982.
Narrow band (thin-kerf) blades
conserve more raw material, require
less energy, are cheap to purchase and
maintain, and are the key to sawing
small logs profitably.
Dozens of SLP systems in operation
around the world are proving the
profitability of small logs every day.
Through the feedback and suggestions
Wood-Mizer collects from customers,
the company has improved the SLP
system by adding yet advantage crucial
to profits – a reduction in labor
requirements to run the system. The
new automated SLP2 line reduces the
manpower requirements by two times:
the line can now be managed by 2 or 3
people depending on the size of the
material being processed.
Wood-Mizer’s
newest method
for returning
better profits
from low-value
small logs
Innovative design
“To automate the SLP technology we
redesigned all the sawmills in the line,
created one new machine and
developed three types of conveyors –
belt, roller and chain,” - says Roman
Frontczak, director of Wood-Mizer’s
R&D Department.
Wood-Mizer engineers made four
objectives their goals with the new
system.

sawmills are now equipped with
hydraulic blade tension systems with
safety switches that stop the entire line
in the case of a broken blade.
SLP2 Overview
In the SLP II layout presented at Ligna,
the line operates in this way:
• Log loading is made from an inclined
ramp equipped with the chain log
feeder.
• Twin Vertical Saw. The first sawmill’s
function is to cut two slabs from the left
and right sides of the log resulting in a
two-sided cant. The log is moved through
the cutting heads by a spiky-chain
conveyor. Six overhead spiked rollers
ensure straight movement of the log
through the saw. After they are cut, the
two slabs drop directly onto an inclined
chain conveyor that removes them for
further processing.
• The Single Horizontal Saw is a brand
new mill in the line. This machine comes
14
WOOD-MIZER TODAY 2013 AUTUMN
after the TVS and the two-sided cants
are fed into it by the same spiky-chain
conveyor. Here, the third slab is cut off
the bottom, resulting in a three-sided
cant. The sawn log is moved on to an
area where the bottom slab is removed
for further processing, while the threesided cant is guided by special fences
and roller conveyors into clamps that
pneumatically position the cant from
both sides.
• The HR500 Horizontal Resaw can be
installed with up to six cutting heads
depending on productivity
requirements. In its maximum
configuration, this resaw will produce six
pallet boards plus one slab in a single
pass. The material is positioned
precisely by side pneumatic clamps and
top pneumatic rollers that operate
together to keep the three-sided cant
secure during sawing.
• After the HR500 the material
handling system removes boards to the
next stage in the production line.
• The central operator console is
installed at the beginning of the line.
From here, the operator controls all
sawmill functions and power switches.
Increase efficiency while
decreasing costs
Wood-Mizer recommends that
customers order the SLP2 line after
considering the size of the raw material
which they are need to process. “Shorter
The SLP2 line

produce a
variety of
wood products,
and is a
favorite to
make pallet
materials
log lengths require shorter conveyors
which means less metal is used and the
equipment is then less expensive,
features a more compact layout,
requires less maintenance and
therefore uses less energy,” Roman
Frontczak shares.
Wood-Mizer reports that installation
of the SLP2 line is fairly simple and is
usually completed within two days.
During installation, Wood-Mizer
technicians ensure that each sawmill is
p r o p e r l y a d j u s t e d . Wo o d - M i z e r
recommends that the system should be
checked once a week during operation.
“The demands of our increasingly
modern global economy requires that all
businesses make decisions to increase
efficiency, and see how they can reduce
costs in a smart way,” continues Roman
Frontczak. “The automated SLP2 line
gives our customers an additional
benefit by greatly reducing the
necessary manpower as labor costs
continue to rise.”
The new automated small log
processing technology is designed to
assist wood producing businesses to
become more successful and
competitive in the markets they serve.

Wood-Mizer recommends that
customers order the SLP2 line after

Wood-Mizer reports that installation
of the SLP2 line is fairly simple and is
usually completed within two days.

“The demands of our increasingly
modern global economy requires that all
businesses make decisions to increase
efficiency, and see how they can reduce
costs in a smart way,” continues Roman
Frontczak. “The automated SLP2 line
gives our customers an additional
benefit by greatly reducing the
necessary manpower as labor costs
continue to rise.”

business
Three ideas for small
sawmill business
Understanding that small businesses will play a big role in the recovery of
Europe's economies, Wood-Mizer took a long look at what most of its
customers are looking for and carefully analysed feedback from its
representatives in over 100 countries.
In addition, the aim was to assess exactly how the economic crisis has
affected sawmilling enterprises. The exercise revealed that as in previous
recessions small companies generally adjust to changing economic conditions,
therefore suffering less than most big operations.
Indeed, they have responded with remarkable flexibility, cutting operating
costs and labour hours and/or switching to the conversion of lumber into
differing new product lines. Only a minority of Wood-Mizer owners left the
wood processing trade and sold their mills, which are always saleable second
hand.
Equally flexible, Wood-Mizer recognised that favourable opportunities
warrant greater support for small woodworking operations in the form of a
series of new, improved and dedicated mills. Each sawmill is designed as a
reliable and crucial pivot to effective timber production and produces more
valuable products from fewer logs. The dramatic response comes in the form of
three production concepts served by three wood-processing machinery
groups…
I N N O V A T I O N
The SLP2 reduces costs
while increasing efficiency
At Ligna 2013, Wood-Mizer exhibited a
new concept for converting small logs
into boards efficiently and quickly.
Wood-Mizer’s SLP2 is an automated
line made up of three sawmills
connected by a material handling
system. The SLP2 line processes logs
10-40cm in diameter and 1.2-3.6m in
length into any square material, and is
primarily used to produce pallet
lumber.
The case history
Quite often businesses do not have a
way to make a profit from low-value
small logs. And in many cases, such
logs are considered only good for
firewood or mulch. With this problem in
mind, in 2007 Wood-Mizer developed a
system of products that could process
small logs into a commercial product
that is marketable and profitable.
This first successful SLP line was
made possible through the use of
Wood-Mizer’s well known narrow-band
blade sawmill technology that they
have employed worldwide since 1982.
Narrow band (thin-kerf) blades
conserve more raw material, require
less energy, are cheap to purchase and
maintain, and are the key to sawing
small logs profitably.
Dozens of SLP systems in operation
around the world are proving the
profitability of small logs every day.
Through the feedback and suggestions
Wood-Mizer collects from customers,
the company has improved the SLP
system by adding yet advantage crucial
to profits – a reduction in labor
requirements to run the system. The
new automated SLP2 line reduces the
manpower requirements by two times:
the line can now be managed by 2 or 3
people depending on the size of the
material being processed.

Innovative design
“To automate the SLP technology we
redesigned all the sawmills in the line,
created one new machine and
developed three types of conveyors –
belt, roller and chain,” - says Roman
Frontczak, director of Wood-Mizer’s
R&D Department.
Wood-Mizer engineers made four
objectives their goals with the new
system.

Wood-Mizer releases the new
WM4000
high-tech sawmill
Wood-Mizer has announced the release
of their new WM4000 thin-kerf
industrial sawmill, which they are
calling the ‘next generation’ in sawmills.
The WM4000 combines the profitability
enhancements of thin-kerf blades with
productivity advances in automated
sawing technology to create an ideal
solution for wood producers in the again
growing timber industry.
Similar in overall design to WoodMizer’s industrial WM3500 sawmill, the
WM4000 features are more heavy duty
and more productive in many ways.
New control station design
Productivity starts with the operator.
With this fact in mind, the WM4000
features a new 7.5” (19cm) HMI touchscreen which presents more
information to the sawyer. Board and
cant sizes are displayed along with
current head height, feed position, and
blade power. Amongst a host of new
productivity-enhancing features, the
sawyer’s favorite has been the Auto-Cut
10
WOOD-MIZER TODAY 2013 AUTUMN
feature, which remembers the location
of the start and end of the log. Instead of
the sawyer overshooting either end of
the log, the sawhead knows how far to
cut, and where to return to, and as a
result spends more time sawing.
The new deluxe joysticks provide the
operator with precise control of all
sawing and log handling functions, and
feature proportional hydraulic speed
control. They can be configured to save
two different sawyers’ personal joystick
preferences.
The sawing head
A new servo motor controls the vertical
head height, and increases the head
up/down speed and positioning
precision. Larger blade guide rollers
provide the blade more support in the
cut.
Hydraulics
The hydraulic speed is adjusted
proportionally to the operator’s pressure
applied to the joysticks during use.

Wood-Mizer has announced the
formation of an African Operations
division that will coordinate future sales
and service efforts on the continent as a
part of its ongoing strategic efforts to
meet global demand.
Wood-Mizer’s portable and industrial
thin-kerf sawmills and secondary
processing solutions together with its inhouse range of narrow band saw blades
have served as the key building blocks of
the group’s successes recorded in the
global sawmilling sector to date.
Wood-Mizer’s presence on the African
continent dates back two decades
before the 2011 decision to launch a
Wood-Mizer subsidiary branch based on
the continent. Key drivers of this move
were to improve pricing, increase range,
provide better service and spare parts
availability and to build an experienced
team that understands the needs of the
African market.
Wood-Mizer’s
commitment towards sustainable
resource management and the benefits
that its range holds for broad socioeconomic development on the continent
also encouraged the decision.

Manager, Jean-Jacques Oelofse and his
team, has now culminated in the
decision by Wood-Mizer LLC to
restructure the company at a global
level to allow for an African Operations
division.
Speaking to Wood-Mizer LLC CEO,
Richard Vivers and Wood-Mizer
Industries managing director, Robert
Bagiński, they shared that the
restructuring was underpinned by two
basic driving points.
“The continued growth recorded on
the continent has convinced the WoodMizer LLC board that Africa will become
a key priority for the group going into the
future. The successes achieved by JJ
Oelofse and his inspired team also
made it clear that they are the vehicle
through which Wood-Mizer will be able
to strengthen the brand on the
continent,” Richard Vivers said.
“JJ Oelofse’s appointment as Chief
Operating Officer of the African
Operations Division and the vested
successes of Wood-Mizer Southern
Africa to date, will allow us to exploit the
opportunities that we’re now presented
with further,” Richard Vivers continued.

with the MP100 log moulder/planer.
This kit is used in building projects for
producing planed beams and shaped

The LT20 series was presented in two
versions: a classic LT20 sawmill with an
electric motor and debarker and a
stationary LT20B on the low segmented
bed with a remote control. This version is
suitable for medium-sized enterprises
because the remote control feature
reduces operator fatigue, and boosts
overall productivity.
The famous mobile Wood-Mizer

industrial LT70 series sawmill with a 42
hp diesel engine. This machine is
equipped with larger diameter
bandwheels, a powerful hydraulic
system for log loading, and provides
high-speed cutting combined with
minimal maintenance.
For timber producers who are looking
for solutions to increase productivity,
Wood-Mizer offers the EG300 edger
with two circular saws, control panel and
laser pointers. Another advantage of the
EG300 is that the machine can be easily
transformed into a multirip with five
circular saws.
As the only band sawmill
manufacturer making its own blades,
Wood-Mizer presented the full spectrum
of blades solutions in three series: the
famous DoubleHard, the Stellite-tipped
RazorTip and the budget SilverTip
blades. Currently the company
manufactures blades in five tooth
profiles for different types of wood and
in different widths (32-75 mm) and
thicknesses (1-1.4 mm). Also WoodMizer demonstrated a wide range of
blade sharpeners based on CBNtechnology.
Thus innovative solutions of WoodMizer are able to ‘make more out of
wood’: to increase the efficiency and
competitiveness of timber production.

This new material is designed to be a
blade that delivers high performance for
production wood cutting. Longer sawing
life is possible due to the Rc hardness of
67 on the tooth edge, especially while
cutting abrasive and exotic wood
species. The high alloy backing material
of the blade offers a combination of
durability and fatigue resistance,
enabling multiple sharpenings for the
life of the blade. This blade is made to be
slightly wider than its size class, which
provides more strength and stability in
the blade, resulting in faster sawing and
more stable cuts.
Wood-Mizer’s Bi-metal blade offering
covers a wide range of cutting
applications and species. Blades come
factory-set and are delivered “ready-tocut” right out of the box. These new

The ISO 9001 certification is a series of
international standards that describes
the requirements for a quality
management system for organizations
and enterprises.
The first time an international audit
of Wood-Mizer’s blade production in
Poland was fully implemented and
completed in accordance to the ISO
9001 standards was in March of 2003.
Since then, annual external audits have
confirmed Wood-Mizer’s commitment
to the strictest implementation of ISO
9001 demands, and certificates were
renewed in 2006, 2009 and 2012.
The last international commission

How does this impact WoodMizer Blade customers?
At each stage of production, the quality
control system was introduced, starting
from the ordering and supplement of
steel and ending with the actual
technological process, packaging,
storage, sale, and up to the delivery of
the product to the customers and
further service.
Here are the key places in the
production where Wood-Mizer technicians check the control measurements:
1) Quality control of incoming steel
after its delivery to the plant
2) Measuring and testing the quality
of the material in the laboratory
3) Measurements during tooth press
