Two summertime favorites—pink
lemonade and vanilla ice cream—
combine in one luscious dessert! “My
husband loves anything and everything
with ice cream in it,” says Kirsten, who
along with her five siblings creates fun
recipes like this one on SixSistersStuff.com!
Make it yourself!
T 1 qt. (4 cups) vanilla
ice cream, softened
T 1 can (6 oz.) frozen
pink lemonade
concentrate
T 1 tub (4 oz.) frozen
whipped topping, thawed
T Liquid red food
coloring, optional
T 2 prepared graham
cracker pie crusts
T Strawberries and lemon
wedges, optional
O In large bowl,
mix ice cream,
lemonade concentrate, whipped
topping and, if desired, a few
drops of food coloring. Spoon
and spread ice cream mixture
into crusts. Freeze until firm,
about 4 hours. If desired,
garnish with strawberries and
lemon. For yellow lemonade
pie, replace pink lemonade
concentrate with regular
lemonade concentrate and
add a few drops of yellow food
coloring. Makes 16 servings.

I’m so happy when my husband of 65 years wears his
World War II veteran’s cap out and about. I love the
way he looks in it, and nothing makes me happier than
when people—including young men and women in
uniform—stop to shake his hand and thank him for
his service. We never expect those warm
greetings, but they are always appreciated!

PARENTING NEWS!
The secret to
safer passwords!
Think constantly changing your online passwords keeps you safer? Surprise! Doing so
actually makes you more susceptible to
security breaches, reveals recent Carnegie
Mellon research. The more often you swap
them, the more worn out you become trying
to come up with—and remember—new
combinations, prompting you to make easier-to-figure-out passwords! Provided yours
is fairly complex (it should include at least
eight random letters and numbers), swapping passwords
every six
months to a
year should
be enough
to keep
you safe.
The perks of being
an older sibling!
Becoming a big brother or sister before
kindergarten lowers kids’ risk of becoming
obese! University of Michigan researchers
discovered that first graders who were four
or younger when their siblings were born
enjoyed healthier
body masses than
kids who were only
children. They theorize that parents might
be more conscious
about what they feed
their oldest if they
know a younger child
is watching—and provide them with healthier foods as a result!
HEALTH NEWS!
Get moving to keep
your memory sharp!
The more calories you burn daily, the more
likely you are to have a sharp memory,
reveals a new Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease
study! Even better? It doesn’t matter if you
do “real” exercise, like biking or jogging, or
stay active by doing housework, gardening
or volunteering: All calorie burning has
a positive effect and can help prevent
age-related brain issues!
Do this to make meals
more delicious!
Before you dig in, pull out your smartphone
and snap a shot of your meal—not only will
you find it easier to keep track
of what you eat, your food will
actually be tastier! A new study
in the Journal of Consumer
Marketing reports that
taking a photograph puts
you “in the moment,”
making you more likely
to appreciate your food—
and savor every bite!
“To be honest, my dad
didn’t care if I was a
plumber or if I was
an actor. He just
said, ‘Whatever you
do, do it well. Be
humble, work hard
and be a man.’ ”
—Scott Eastwood

HELP A HERO! Send
energy to the troops!
Do you have unopened, in-date packages of beef jerky
(any size or flavor) to share? Send them to Tip of the
Spear! This nonprofit organization will ship them to
Special Forces, Marines and other American troops
stationed in Afghanistan, who love the high-protein snack
as an energy source (it’s a great morale booster for them!).
Mail items to Tip of the Spear, P.O. Box 3083, Sugar
Land, TX 77487, and learn more at TipOfTheSpear.org.
O Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received a patent in 1873 for work pants with copper rivets. The
rivets were Davis’s invention. A tailor in Reno,
Nevada, he’d used them to strengthen the canvas
pants Strauss was manufacturing. In exchange for
his idea, Strauss made Davis his production manager. And later, when the duo switched from using
canvas to blue denim, blue jeans were born!
O The Earth passed through the tail of Halley’s
Comet in 1910—and nothing happened! Dire predictions that a deadly comet gas would be released
had worried citizens lining up and shelling out big
bucks for “anti-comet pills” and gas masks!
O The action-adventure film Indiana Jones and
the Temple of Doom, released in
1984, brought in a record-breaking
$45.7 million at the box office in its
first week. Several characters
were named after the film-makers’ pets: The inspiration for the
“Indiana” in Jones’ name was
executive producer George
Lucas’ Alaskan malamute.
Willie Scott’s name came from
director Steven Spielberg’s cocker spaniel Willie, while Short Round
was in honor of co-writer Willard
Huyck’s Shetland sheepdog!
O Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—creator of the
famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes—was
born in Scotland in 1859. Although he opened an
ophthalmology practice in London, he wrote in his
autobiography that he never had a single patient,
and so began writing to fill the empty time!
O Robert Allen Zimmerman was born in 1941
in Minnesota. Before he legally
changed his name to Bob Dylan
in 1962 and became the legendary folk rock singer-songwriter, he
briefly worked as a piano player
going by the name Elston Gunnn!
O Lever Brothers registered
“Wisk” as the trademark for
America’s first liquid laundry
detergent in 1956. Its “Ring
Around the Collar” ad campaign, introduced in
1968 to spotlight the detergent’s ability to erase
those often difficult-to-treat stains, proved so popular, it remained in use for more than three decades!

You’ll feel like you’re on an instant vacation when you sip this fruity
cocktail courtesy of Lulus.com:
R 1 oz. tequila
R 4 oz. pineapple juice
R 1 1/2 oz. grenadine
R Fruit garnish, such as
a pineapple slice and
a maraschino cherry
1. Pour the tequila and pineapple juice into a
cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously for 30 seconds to combine. Note: If you’d
prefer a mocktail, you can replace the tequila
with club soda.
2. Strain the pineapple mixture into a glass,
then slowly pour the grenadine around the inside
edge of the glass—it will sink and then gradually
rise to mix with the other ingredients, creating a
pretty sunrise effect.
3. Garnish with fruit and enjoy!

Extra road trips in summer cause a peak in car accidents. The great news: Drinking more water while
behind the wheel can help you steer clear of danger!
' How it works: Even mild dehydration (common on
hot summer days) slows reaction time and decreases
concentration, causing as many driver errors as
drinking alcohol or sleep deprivation! Fitting in eight
cups of water or other uncaffeinated beverages daily
ups focus and reaction times, helping you avoid errors
and spot and avert any that other drivers make!

Thanks to a plant extract called
geraniol, you can safely skip the
itch and bother of mosquito bites
(and any potential health dangers).
And though it’s all-natural, geraniol

attract mosquitoes—and it’s so

Beat stress and get ea

At least 22 studies prove that reining in nerverattling stress hormones can cut your risk of
heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes,
chronic headaches and depression in half—
while making you feel a whole lot happier every
day! And it’s easier than you may think. Try:
✓
Ending anxiety
with a sweet scent
Vetiver—an essential oil extracted
from an Asian grass—eases anxiety
as effectively as the prescription drug
Valium, researchers say. Vetiver’s
sweet, woody scent calms the area of
your brain that helps keep your
breathing steady, your heart rate
slow and your nervousness in check
when stressed. To induce calm, light
a vetiver-scented candle or mix five
drops of vetiver essential oil into 1 oz.

for up to two hours, reports the journal Metabolism. Carbs stimulate
production of your brain’s own antidepressant hormone serotonin,
explains study coauthor Stephen

1 cup of popcorn or dry cereal, 1/2
cup pasta, rice or other cooked
grains or 1 slice of bread per meal.

Don’t have the time to learn yoga, tai
chi, meditation or other stress-busting strategies? Walk briskly for 10
minutes a day instead. Danish studies show that’s enough to cut your
risk of feeling overwhelmed and
stressed 35%—as much of a benefit
as prescription anxiety meds deliver! Or just spend five minutes doing
basic stretches—reaching for the
sky, touching your toes and twirling
your ankles—while seated. Brisk
walking and stretching rev the
release of the so-called “happy”
hormones that can keep you upbeat
and calm, even on hectic days, a
recent study reveals.
✓
Taming tension
with red meat
Eating 16 oz. of beef or pork weekly
could help you feel less stressed in
as little as five days, British
researchers say. Red meat is rich in
iron and all nine essential amino
acids, which together relax tense
muscles. They also encourage the

{ ANTI-AGING BREAKTHROUGH! }
Stop thinning hair with grape seed extract
rape seed extract is proven
G
to help ward off a slew of diseases, thanks to its antioxidant
content. But it also has a lesserknown benefit—fighting hair loss!
So, how does it work?
A cutting-edge study out of Japan
found that a compound called proanthocyanidin in grape seeds not
only stopped hair loss, it increased
the growth of hair cells by more than
200%! “Grape seed extract has
been shown to promote hair
growth by shifting hairs
from a resting phase to
an actively growing
phase, leading to the
production of new,
healthy hairs,” says
Joshua Zeichner, M.D.,
assistant professor of
dermatology at New York’s
Mount Sinai Hospital, of the new
research. And the more hairs you
have in the growth phase, the thicker
and healthier your hair will be. Plus,
the extract is packed with cellprotecting antioxidants that have the
power to prevent a common, but
hidden culprit behind hair loss:
inflammation. An inflamed scalp
interferes with the health of follicles,
weakening them or blocking them
and causing hair to fall out or suppressing its growth, he explains.
Is it safe?
Absolutely! Grapes have been
used as a health cure all
the way back to ancient
Egypt and Greece,
and the tried-and-true
extract of the seeds
has no known side
effects. But check with
your doctor before taking it
if you are pregnant or on any
medications, including blood thinners, to avoid interactions.
How much do I need?
To optimize your hair’s health, take
up to 180 mg., twice daily, in capsule
or tablet form. University of Maryland Medical Center experts recommend choosing pills standardized to
an OPC (oligomeric proanthocyanidins) content of at least 95%, such
as Activin Grape Seed Extract
($11.24, LifeExtension.com).
Is there a way to maximize
the benefits?
Yes! Conditioning your hair and
scalp with grape seed oil (such as
Now Grapeseed Oil, $7.52, Jet.com)
once each week can rev your
results. The light, odorless oil is
packed with vitamins and is rich in
super-moisturizing linoleic acid.
Shampoo as usual, then, using a
wide-tooth comb, run two to four
tablespoons of the oil through toweldried hair. Massage the oil in at the
roots. Wrap your head in a towel and

Japanese secrets for
Worry too much? Get down on yourself for every mistake? Embrace wabi sabi,
an ancient idea from Zen Buddhism that says perfection doesn’t exist,
making it easier to accept and appreciate the way things are—an outlook
that’s study-proven to boost gratitude, optimism and happiness!
Promote
gratitude
with a tea
ceremony
The focus of the Japanese
tea ceremony isn’t to make
the perfect cup of tea, it’s
to encourage participants
to live fully in the present
moment. The Japanese
saying Ichigo, ichie
translates to ‘One time,
one meeting’—a reminder
that each encounter
with another person is
unique, so make the
most of every one!

' Wabi sabi way!
Remembering that
change is inevitable
helps you appreciate the
present more. The proof:
In one study, reminding
folks that a happy event
(like a picnic) was going
to end soon increased
their enjoyment of it
by making them place
more value on the time
that was left!
Increase joy
with a single flower
Ikebana, the ancient
Japanese art of flower
arrangement, stresses
simplicity, so that the beauty
of each leaf and stem can
be as appreciated as the
showy bloom. “Finding
the beauty in what is
normally considered
‘plain’ increases
happiness by making
you more aware of the
beauty that’s all
around you!” says
Diane Durston,
author of Wabi Sabi:
The Art of Everyday Life.
' Wabi sabi way!
Look for beauty
everywhere.
For example,
instead of seeing
dandelions and
other “weeds” as
nuisances, see
them as the
wildflowers
they really
are.
Find serenity
with a sand garden
Unlike regular gardens, the focus of a Zen garden is raking the dirt or sand slowly into
wave-like patterns to induce a meditative state. Studies show that that type of methodical
movement spurs you to “zone out,” so your worries fall by the wayside.
' Wabi sabi way! All repetitive, rhythmic movement slows brain waves, which
induces a stress-free state. Even drawing and doodling (especially in wavy or circular
patterns) does the trick, a reason coloring books are now so popular among adults!
Boost your
confidence
with a bonsai
Caring for bonsai plants—
miniature trees encouraged
to grow in unique shapes—
is proven to promote calm,
creativity and self-control.
Shaping bonsai requires you
to slow your actions and
your thoughts, since the
tree’s small size demands a
steady, cautious hand. And
because the hobby requires
patience, it often results in
a surge in self-confidence!
' Wabi sabi way! Bonsai
plants are sold in nursery
and gardening stores, and
online at FTD.com and
1800Flowers.com.
Melt stress
by abandoning perfection
“In wabi sabi, signs of wear aren’t negative,
they make something more interesting!”
says Durston. Revered craftsmen intentionally make teacups with “mistakes,”
then “repair” the flaw with precious
metals to show off its uniqueness!
' Wabi sabi way! Embrace signs of wear
as proof that whatever you’re looking at
has been well used and loved. And this
goes for you as well: “Utsukushii,” a
Japanese word for “beautiful” evolved
from its original meaning, “being loved!”

Express your connection and caring
Welcome a hero home!
Whether you’re looking forward to a loved one’s return or are
joining your community to welcome back a hometown hero,
there are plenty of ways to make this much-anticipated
moment even more meaningful!
b
“Hug” heroes with special signs!
A personalized welcome home sign is like
an embrace telling our returning
heroes just how much they’ve
been missed! A few ideas to
make your sign more special:
O Consider a second sign! “Ask your service member if there is anyone
returning home with him or her who has no one to receive them,” suggests
Deanna Cole, a Military Family Readiness expert. “Consider making a sign
or goodie bag just for them.” Tip! Order free signs at BuildASign.com/troops.
b
Recruit your whole community!
While many service members prefer a low-key homecoming, others
would like to celebrate with their entire community. If your soldier
belongs in the latter camp, here are a few ways to recruit your town:
O Ask firefighters to fly the flag! “Local fire departments love bringing
out their truck to hoist a huge flag at welcome-home festivities,” says Cole.
O Get the word out! “Distribute fliers asking folks to put out flags, flowers
and yellow ribbons,” says Cole. “Small tokens like these are the best way
to show appreciation without overwhelming the returning serviceperson.”
O Make star-spangled yards! Cut star-shaped stencils from poster board
and have kids decorate lawns with stars made of flour
O Line their route home! “When a soldiers return
home where I live, our church makes welcome signs
and hands them out during services,” says Hinds.
“Soldiers have told me how their hearts race when
they see that flood of signs lining their route home.”

b
Make the next deployment
easier!
O Create a
“communication
station”! When
Cole’s husband was
deployed, she created a “communication
station” in her kitchen. “It had everything
from envelopes and
stamps to pictures
ready to send to
Dad,” she says. “I
also put out a clock
showing the time in
Iraq with an arrow pointing to it: Daddy’s Time. It empowered our
t to Dad whenever they wanted.”
O Keep a family journal! “We kept a
family journal to give to my husband when he got back,” says
Cole. “It included emotional
moments we didn’t want to tell him
about over e-mail—my daughter
going on her first date, for example.”
Don’t know
a serviceperson
personally?
Just head to WhiteHouse.gov/
JoiningForces to learn all
about how to help heroes
and their families, from
sending personal messages
of thanks to starting your
own volunteer project. Also smart: “Reach out to Joint
ServicesSupport.org to find out how to get connected
with a welcoming event in your area,” suggests Cole.
—Kristina Mastrocola
Photos: Getty Images (5); Shutterstock (2); Luke Sharrett/Getty Images.
O Get all hands (and paws!)
on deck! Dip loved ones’
hands in patriotic red and blue
paint, and press ’em onto your
sign to create a meaningful border. “You can write: ‘These
hands prayed for you,’ ” suggests Jil Hinds of the Coalition
to Salute America’s Heroes. “After my husband’s first deployment,
I decorated a banner with our two Chihuahuas’ paw prints—he loved it!”
O Make a heartfelt countdown! “Write down how many months, days,
minutes they’ve been away—or the number of calls and letters,” Hinds says.
“It captures a sense of time and the joy that the wait for their return is over.”

Take a Break!
N
eed an easy way to unwind? Sip a good-for-you citrus juice cocktail!
“Made from fresh oranges, lemons and/or grapefruits, these drinks
are not only incredibly refreshing, they’re loaded with vitamins and
minerals,” says Julia Momose, mixologist at Chicago’s upscale
GreenRiver restaurant. In fact, citrus juices are so full of nutrients, you
only need a little bit to reap impressive health benefits, such as lower
blood pressure, improved heart health and even better sleep!
Lower your
blood pressure
Sleep soundly
“The bright
lemon
flavor
blends with
the subtle
citrus notes in chilled
Earl Grey tea for a truly
refreshing drink,” Momose
says. And the potassium in
lemon juice helps reduce
your blood pressure, as do the
antioxidants in Earl Grey tea!
“This is like a classic
daiquiri with a twist.
Grapefruit juice adds
a burst of acidity,
balanced by the floral
notes in the elderflower
liqueur,” Momose
says. And if you enjoy
it as a nightcap, the
tryptophan in the tart
grapefruit juice will
act as a mild sedative,
helping you reach
dreamland with ease!

“Sweet and tangy, this bright citrus

Don’t skimp on shaking!
Momose’s secret to your bestever cocktails? “Shaking like you
mean it!” she says. “A good, vigorous shake does three things:
It blends the ingredients, chills
your drink to the perfect temperature and adds aeration.
Aeration creates an amazing
texture that makes your drink
that much more delicious!” How
much shaking is enough? Keep
going until your cocktail shaker
becomes frosty and cold to the
touch, about 10 to 12 seconds.

Roadside angel
When her car broke down
in a strange city, Woman’s
World reader, Linda Olivarri
de-Trinidad, of Atlantic
Beach, Florida, encountered
an angel who helped her
get home safely!
S
ome years ago, my husband and I moved to Austin, Texas. It was hard being in an unfamiliar city with
no family nearby.
One very warm spring day, not
long after we had arrived, I was
running errands with my threeyear-old daughter when my car
began to stall. In a panic, I
pulled over to the side of the
road and turned off the ignition.
This was before cellphones
were readily available, and I
was stuck on the side of the
road with no idea what to do!
My daughter was asleep in her
car seat, so I rolled down all of
the windows, then got out of the
car. As I lifted the hood, smoke
billowed out, and I began to cry.
I knew nothing about cars, the
temperature was rising, and I
was very thirsty.
“God, please send someone to
help us,” I cried.
Suddenly, a man with a kind
face and deep blue eyes walked
up to me, seemingly from out of
nowhere.
“Don’t worry, everything will
be okay,” he said, handing me a
cold bottle of water.
The water was refreshing, as I
swallowed several gulps.
“Can you help me?” I asked.
“I really don’t know a thing
about cars, but I believe if you
close the hood you can start it
up again, and all will be well,”
he said.
His presence was soothing,
very similar to the way it felt
when I was a child and my
mother picked me up when I’d
fallen and skinned my knee.
Suddenly, my daughter began
to cry, and I turned away from
the man in order to unstrap her
from the car seat and give her
some of the water. As I lifted
her in my arms, I said, “Thank
you for the water. I believe I will
do as you suggested.”
But when I turned around, the
man was gone!
I looked up and
down the road,
astonished.
Where could he
be? Baffled, I
closed the hood
and buckled my
daughter back into her car seat.
Then slipping into the driver’s
seat, I turned the ignition—and
the engine sprang to life!
The smoke had stopped billowing from beneath the hood,
and we made it home safely.
When I told my husband what
had happened, he
looked under the hood,
but nothing seemed to
be wrong. Suddenly, I
realized that the man
was our guardian angel. Even now, years
later, I fondly think of
him and know that he
still watches over us.
“Linda is describing the
same man who appears to
many people in distress! And
I believe he is the Archangel
Michael, the angel of protection,” says Doreen Virtue,
Ph.D.
“In each story I hear like
Linda’s, everyone describes
the good Samaritan’s blue
eyes and how he suddenly appears and disappears, and
knows all of the details without being told . . . such as
bringing Linda water when
she was thirsty.
“Angels can take on temporary human form to help us
escape and avoid dangerous
situations. Angels can also
instantly fix mechanical and
electronic problems, as Linda’s story illustrates.
“The angels say, ‘We aren’t
on a faraway cloud somewhere—we are right next to
you at all times, ready to do
whatever is necessary to protect and comfort you.’ ”
Doreen says:

Ask America’s Ultimate Experts
“Help me lower my medical costs!”
With costs on the rise, finding ways to cut
healthcare bills has never been more important.
Our experts share the easy ways to do just that!
1 Cut Rx costs!
Have a chat with your doc!
“Before your doctor prescribes a
new drug, ask her to give you three
alternative medication choices so
that you can
search the ‘formulary’ (medications covered)
on your insurer’s
website, and compare the copayment
for each,” advises
Cary Byrd, founder
of the free price
comparison engine
eDrugSearch.com.
Save with your
smartphone!
Apply coupons!
Asking your doctor to prescribe a generic version of
the drug can save you a
whopping 80%, says Byrd.
And if your doctor insists on
a brand-name drug?
“Check the manufacturer’s website
for coupons, also
called
‘copay
cards’.” Or simply
do an online search
(“drug name + coupon”) to find the coupons. “Most pharmacies accept these coupons,
which can cut your costs
50% or more!”
Do community outreach!
The free GoodRx mobile app
(GoodRx.com) compares drug
prices and provides coupons from
the pharmacies in your area, for a
typical savings of 10% to 20% off
the regular retail price, Byrd
reveals. Other favorite low-cost
sources? “Drugstore.com, Costco
and Sam’s Club often offer the
lowest U.S. drug prices,” he says.
“And to save on select generics,
many
retailers,
including
WalMart, Target, K-Mart, Kroger,
Publix, Safeway and Wegmans,
offer a set $4 for a
30-day supply or $10
to $12 for a 90-day
supply!”
Find community-based health centers open to anyone—insured or
not—through the Partnership for
Prescription Assistance Free Clinic
Finder (tinyURL.com/l5gunjk).
“Also the 340B Drug Discount Program (HRSA.gov/opa), available
for under-insured and uninsured
individuals, provides prescription
financial assistance for up to 50%
of out-of-pocket costs,” says Byrd.
2 Slash
medical bills!
‘gloves and gowns’ charges or ‘oral
administration fees’—which just
means a nurse giving a patient a
pill.” Not sure what a charge
means? “Don’t call the hospital’s
customer service because they
won’t know,” says Palmer. “Call the
nurse’s station and give them a
description of the charge, and ask
what it is. I had a client who was
charged $110 for a ‘bear-hugger’.
Turns out, it’s the teddy bear
patients hug to ease the pain of a
cough! After disputing it, the fee
was erased easily.” Still feel overbilled? The pros at Medical Billing
Advocates of America (BillAdvo
cates.com) charge you a percentage of the amount they save you—
and if they don’t reduce your bill,
you won’t be charged!
Avoid surprise fees!
Ask for a discount!
Always ask for an itemized summary of your bill, advises medical
billing advocate Pat Palmer. “Eight
out of 10 bills have overcharges on
them—you can save 17% to 49%
just by looking at each line and
checking to see if you’re being
billed for medications you didn’t
take or tests you didn’t undergo.”
Routine services that often pop up
on a hospital bill and that you can
easily dispute, she says, “include

most facilities will negotiate

Miracle girl!
I
t took three days for Erica to
awaken. And when her parents
explained what had happened, only
the most fleeting fragments of
memories spun in her mind.
But I’m here—and it’s a miracle I
survived. That has to count for
something, Erica marveled.
Over the next three weeks, she underwent as many surgeries, from
inserting a breathing tube in her
lung to setting her hip with a metal
rod. Even when Erica was released
from the hospital to a rehabilitation
center, in a wheelchair with an
enormous Velcro cast enveloping
her body, doctors couldn’t say what
would happen—because only time
could tell if her spine would heal.
“I will walk again,” Erica insisted.
She could feel her legs. She could
even move them, though the slightest twitch made her want to scream.
Yet still she refused to give up.
Gripping the bed sheets, her mom
helped her stand.
“You should be resting!” nurses
insisted. But Erica refused to just sit
and wait and hope someday she
could do more.
When after a month, she went
home still in a wheelchair,
Erica continued to push herself.
One step, then another. Soon she
was hobbling across her room. And
within six months, she was not only
walking but begging her dad, “Take
me back to the waterfall.”
Her parents didn’t want to. But
they also knew how strong-willed
Erica was. And they realized maybe
she needed to do that, too, to heal.
In fact, looking out over the trail
that had almost stolen her life, Erica
was overwhelmed with gratitude.
Today, Erica is hiking again, and
she’s back in graduate school for
social work. She’s hoping once
again to join the Peace Corps.
“Doctors say I’m the luckiest person alive. I’m also the happiest!” she
insists. “Having almost died has
given me the courage to live more
intensely. I know how fragile and
beautiful life is. I wake up every day
with a sense of appreciation and
gratitude—because it’s a miracle!”

ikki checked her watch
and sighed. Her blind date
had agreed to meet her 40
minutes ago at Ethan’s Café. She
debated leaving but decided to
order a second cup of coffee. She
grinned when it arrived with a
smiley face in the frothy milk.
“That’s better,” said the cute
waiter. “I was hoping my coffee
art would put a smile on your
face. You looked a little sad.”
“That’s really sweet of you to
try to cheer me up,” she said.
He raised a brow. “Try? You
mean it didn’t work?”
“It helped,” she admitted. “I was
supposed to meet someone, but I
think I’ve been stood up.”
“Maybe he’s been delayed. Or
hit his head and has amnesia,”
he laughed.
“Maybe,” Nikki giggled. “Or
perhaps he saw me through the
window and ran the other way.
I told him that I’d be wearing
a red dress.”
Ethan’s beautiful
blue eyes and his
coffee art that
made her smile.
So a few days later
when Angie offered
to buy her lunch,
Nikki
suggested
Ethan’s Café.
When they walked into
the café, Nikki spotted Ethan
behind the coffee machine, and
her heart beat a little faster. But
he was busy, so someone else
took their order.
A few minutes later, Nikki’s
coffee cup was placed in front
of her with the words, U OK?
in the froth. She glanced up
to see Ethan smiling down at her.
“I’m okay,” she said, feeling her
face grow warm. “Thanks for
asking.”
“Ever find out what happened
to your blind date?” he asked.
“He got cold feet.”
“I’m sorry,” he said, “but I’m not
sorry about one thing in
particular.”
“What’s that?”
His cheeks reddened.
“This means you’re still
available, right? I was—”
“Ethan!” an employee called
from behind the counter. “I need
your help with the coffee machine again!”
“Sorry,” he called over his
shoulder while scurrying back.
Nikki was sorry, too, and she
wondered what he had been
about to say.
She went back to the café a few
His eyes narrowed. “Hmmm . . .
No, if he saw you he wouldn’t run
away. He’d be tripping over himself trying to get to your table.”
Nikki’s day brightened.
She glanced at his name tag.
“Are you Ethan, the owner?”
“One and the same,” he smiled.
Before she could respond, a
woman behind the counter
called out: “Ethan, this cash
register tape is stuck
again!”
Crossword puzzle solution
“Looks like I gotta go!”
he laughed.
His smile warmed her
more than the coffee.
He paused. “I didn’t get
your name.”
“Nikki,” she said.
“See you later, Nikki!”
Later that day, her
friend who had set up
the blind date called and
apologized profusely.
“What a loser!” she
said. “I can’t believe he
did that to you! I’m so
sorry, Nikki!”
“It’s okay, Angie. I’m
not upset.” It was true
because now all she
could think about were
days later, hoping to see Ethan
again, but he wasn’t there.
“What time will Ethan be here
today?” She got up the nerve to
ask the person taking her order.
“He’s on vacation this week.
He’ll be back next Monday.” The
woman behind the counter
smiled. “Is your name Nikki?”
She nodded.
“Ethan mentioned a customer
named Nikki. He said she had
dark hair and a lovely smile.” She
winked. “I can vouch for him.
I’ve known him for a long time,
and he’s a great guy.”
Nikki’s heart lifted as she left
the café. When she returned on
Monday for lunch, Ethan was
back!
After she took a seat, he walked
over to her, holding a coffee mug.
“For you,” he said.
“Thank you,” Nikki said,
surprised. “But I haven’t ordered
yet.”
He smiled. “Compliments of the
house.” He put the cup in front
of her, and that’s when she saw
the shape of a heart
in the foam!
Her own heart beat
faster. “I missed you
when you were on vacation,” she said.
He smiled. “I missed
you, too. The whole time
I was away, I worried
that you’d have another
blind date and be smitten before I could ask
you out.”
“Well, you’re right
about one thing,” she
said. “I am smitten with
someone.”
Ethan looked uncertain until she smiled and
added, “What time do
you finish work?”

“I’m glad I could lend a hand!”
I was working on my résumé
at Starbucks when I saw a
businessman sitting nearby,
talking on the phone. I heard
him say that he was preparing for a
big work presentation and the track
pad on his laptop was broken, and now
his wireless mouse had just died. “I’m
worried I won’t get this presentation
done on time,” he sighed. So I quickly
popped the batteries out of my own wireless mouse and walked
over to his table. “Excuse me, but I heard that your batteries died.
Please, take mine,” I offered. He was shocked and thanked me over
and over. It was a simple gesture, but I’m glad I could lend him a
hand when he needed it!

hen his dad, A.J.,
bought tickets for a motocross racing event,
10-year-old Nasim Lawrence was
beyond excited. “It’s going to be
great!” he exclaimed.
On the big night, they were
walking through the crowded
Oakland, California, arena when,
suddenly, something on the
ground caught the boy’s eye.
“It’s a wallet!” Nasim said,
scooping it up.
“Maybe there’s ID in it,” A.J.
suggested.
Inside the pink pouch they
found money, a debit card and
a driver’s license belonging to
Taylor Sloan.
“There’s $38 here!” Nasim exclaimed after he counted the
cash.
It was a lot of money to the
fourth-grader. He knew it would
take him a long time to save up
that much from his allowance.
And as he looked at the smiling
face of the young woman pictured on the driver’s license,
Nasim’s heart tugged.
I’d be really sad if I lost money
or something special to me, he
thought.
“Dad, we just have to find this
lady!” he told A.J.
For the rest of the night, Nasim
sat in the stands with the driver’s
license in his hand and scanned
the crowd for a young woman
with blonde hair that matched
the photo ID.
As the motorbikes sped around
the track, Nasim didn’t seem to
notice. “He couldn’t focus on the
race because he insisted he just
had to find the lady who lost her

shopping for a new
swimsuit—not
my favorite
thing to
do, but I
brightened up
when I spotted
my friend Pam looking
at some coverups. I
jokingly shouted in her
direction, “You’ve got
the right idea—hide as
much as you can!” My
laughter stopped
short when the
woman turned
around . . . and
it wasn’t Pam!
Luckily, she
smiled and nodded in
agreement, but boy,
was my face red!
