Small Ads pin board Welcome Dear friends, I've had several requests for visits since last month's issue - it's very heartening to know that you do actually read what I write on this page month by month! Do keep the requests coming, and I will do my best to follow them up. Church as a whole is only just beginning to address this issue, and we will have to work hard at it in future. Why not come and hear Dave Gardner talk about it at our Benefice dinner in the Village Hall at Raydon on 9 July. Please book a ticket (£10 per person, BYOB) with me. I have preached recently about 'Circles of Influence' - a phrase taken from Stephen Covey's '7 Habits of Highly Effective People'. Basically, each one of us has a Circle of Influence - people around us whom we can influence for the good. They then take that influence out to their own other Circles of Influence, and that is how good news spreads. That is exactly how Christianity spread - from being something that only a few people understood in a few small towns in an isolated part of the Roman Empire in the first century AD, to being a worldwide religion that forms the basis for most Western societies to this day. The original 12 disciples took their beliefs out into the wider world and, as people heard them and came to believe, those people in their turn told others and helped them to believe. This month, most of us will be longing for our summer holidays as university, college and school terms come to an end, though often they can be a mixed blessing for families, particularly for those whose parents work full time. I will be thinking of you and praying that all will have a time of refreshment and recharging of the batteries. We now have a new Bishop in the Diocese, the Right Reverend Martin Seeley, who has lots of practical ideas for getting our Diocese on track to face a future which is looking a little bleak for the Church of England at present. Partly this is because in the next 10 years 50% of priests in the national Church of England will retire, and there are not enough younger priests coming through to replace them. Simply put, in the years ahead, this means that existing priests will have to take on more and more parishes, and that we shall need to train and empower the laity (those who are not priests) to be able to take more services and more responsibility for their local churches. We also need to look at how we attract younger people into the Church who might have a vocation to priesthood one day. And that will probably involve us in 'doing Church' in very different ways in future, for the traditional kinds of church service that most of us have grown up with until now are clearly not proving attractive to recent generations, for a whole variety of reasons to do with how communication is done these days. The This is exactly what we need to be doing today if the Church as we know it is not to die out very rapidly in this country. Most of us have been content not to pass on the good news of God's love to the generations below us - 'Let them come to belief in their own time if they want to' is the attitude. But if they are never taught about it, how will they ever be able to make that choice? We need to use our Circles of Influence to tell our children and grandchildren about God's love for them. Don't let them be the generation that knows nothing about Him. Over to you...! Another month has passed us by so quickly and summer still seems to be hiding just around the corner. The odd few days have brought out the sunshine but the evenings still feel a little chilly. Let’s hope that the weather has been just right to produce the wonderful exhibits to be found at the Raydon and District Garden Club Summer Show - more details on page 11. Each of the four villages are holding various events over the summer months, ranging from delicious afternoon teas and Summer Afayre in Raydon to a Medieval Fayre in SSM. Please try and support as many of these events as you can. There is such a lot of hard work and effort in planning these events and bringing them to fruition. A huge vote of thanks needs to be given to the huge amount of volunteers ‘behind the scenes’ and we wish you every success. We very much hope that a visit to the Fayre is already included in your plans for that weekend. However, if you have yet to make your decision perhaps a review of the programme will encourage you to join in an afternoon of relaxed, light hearted amusement. This will be an opportunity to enjoy the company of family, friends and neighbours whilst encouraging and supporting a range of community focused activity. Opening in the Primary School playing field at noon, the Fayre will provide an opportunity for visitors to demonstrate their prowess on a variety of traditional and mediaeval themed, games and pass-times, to work up an appetite for lunch. At 12:30, there will be a free-of-charge B-B-Q lunch for Children under the age of 14, who live in, or have family living in, the Stratford St Mary area. For the rest of us, the PTA will be a serving up a Hog-Roast and there will be a variety of other refreshment options available throughout the afternoon. Something not to be missed will be the traditional cream teas served by Christine and her team from the Church. The Ale Bar at the VillageLife Tavern will be serving local ale from the Swan micro-brewery (and jolly good it is too) and the Tavern will also host a Wine-Bar, manned by volunteers from the Church Fabric fund. The afternoon’s entertainment will include traditional Punch and Judy (at 1, 3 and 4.30pm), live music from ‘The InFirm’ (1.30 & 3.30pm) and the PTA will be running ‘three Children’s Craft Workshops’ with a mediaeval theme between 1.00 and 2.30pm, culminating in a chance for the participants to join a parade in the arena at 2.30pm, to show-off the results of their handiwork. Also in the arena, the ‘FunDancing Maypolers’ will be tripping the light fantastic from 2pm and offering opportunity for audience participation from 2.40pm. At the heart of the afternoon’s frivolity will be two other audience participation events. The Magna-Games, a mini-Olympic style competition involving, amongst other things, wheelbarrows, water, shovels, cabbages and participant skill and agility. The other, Kart-Eventing, is something like equestrian eventing but somewhat sillier. Please visit the VL web-site, www.stratford-st-mary.org , to learn more, register and buy tickets and then join us on the day, prepared to take part. If you feel like really entering into the mediaeval mood, why not get into costume? You know you want to! We look forward to welcoming you. 8 9 Raydon Fair Trade Coffee Morning. Homemade Teas at May 26th dawned bright and sunny, the day for our Fair Trade coffee morning. I was far from bright and sunny though as over St Mary’s Church, Raydon Sunday 5 July 2015 the bank holiday weekend one of my chickens (the cream leg bar called Tara) had become really poorly. The only appointment at the Vet was for 11am so the “tea team” took over again although I was able to stay for a short while. As expected the news was not good and sadly I had to come home without my Tara. It was good to hear though that the coffee morning had gone well and quite a few of our regulars had recovered from colds etc. or returned from holidays so I'm really looking forward to catching up with everyone again. Our next event on July 21st will be very close to the fundraising event “August Afayre” which is on August 1st this year. This will be your chance to bring along items for the tombola or raffle, to put your name down for helping on the day, or offering to make a cake or supply a plant or two for the stalls. Sunday 2 August 2015 Sunday 6 September 2015 Teas served from 3.00 to 5.00 pm In aid of our Fabric Fund. NEW WEBSITE GOES LIVE! The new Raydon website is now live please visit www.raydonpc.org and ‘contact us’ let us know what you think. Well, I hope you are able to come along and enjoy the good coffee and cookies as well as a good chat with everyone, so look forward to seeing you all on July 21st. Many thanks Wendy Mumford 312123 10 Raydon and District Gardening Club night. Plenty of car parking space, with additional parking at "The Old Forge" which is a easy walking distance to the garden for most. Advance notice:- The 24th Sept meeting is all about Bulbs for planting ready for the next Spring & our Charity open evening is for Parkinson's Disease on 22nd October both to be held in village hall. As always your committee looks forward to meeting you at all our events. Geoff Horrex (01473 310422) Writing these notes on the 15th of June we are heading for the longest day once again, and hopefully at least another 2/3 months of lovely summer weather to look forward to. On summer days with not quite so much to do in the gardens it’s time for holidays, and days out into the wonderful English Countryside to enjoy all that is so great at this time of year like a nice walk to enjoy nature, a day at the seaside perhaps or by a river or to just sit in your garden. The "lazy hazy" days of summer are to be enjoyed but also to have a deserved rest. Our May club meeting enjoyed a energetic, humorous, informative and a most interesting talk with our guest speaker from "The Bourne Garden Centre" Ipswich. We were taken through a whole range of plants which were on show, also available for purchase afterwards, It was explained how these were produced, the tricks of the trade, how they get them to grow to certain heights and flower at the correct times like you see at Chelsea flower show etc. A great evening which we all enjoyed. July 2nd the club will be visiting a local garden in Lower Raydon called "Foxwood" just by the turning to Shelley. Please come direct for 7.30pm start. A charge of £2.00 per head will be made and given to a charity of the owners’ choice. Refreshments afterwards as usual but no raffle on the Y 35th ear www.raydon-gc.org.uk 11 Raydon Century Club Draw June 2015 CHARLIE HAYLOCK is making a return visit to Raydon Village Hall with "An eccentric look at spoken English" on Saturday the 10th October. £25 99 Mrs S Larner £15 102 Mrs A Savill £10 A complimentary cup of tea or coffee and a piece of cake is included in the entrance fee of 68 Mrs C Neckrews £5 £5 £7.50 per person. 114 Mrs A Parnell 72 Mrs Monica Hammond £5 16 Mrs N Summers £5 66 Mrs J Doughton GRAND DRAW £100 34 Mr M Mumford £50 31 Leah Banyard £50 39 Mrs E Nunn £50 43 Mrs J Newby Textile recycling bags are available free of charge Local Textile Bag Stockists: Capel St Mary Village Hall (Library), The Street IP9 2EP Hadleigh Library 29 High Street IP7 5AG 12 GAMES Hot Dogs 13 Higham Apologies to Higham - we were hoping for an article about the Art Show but we needed to go to print. Hopefully we will have it for next month but we hope you enjoy this recipe submitted by one of our readers.. Maple & Walnut Cheesecake For the base 250g (9 oz.) Digestive biscuits 100g (4 oz.) Butter, melted For the topping 400ml (14 fl oz.) Sour cream 50g (2 oz.) Caster Sugar 2tsp Vanilla Extract 35g (1¼ oz.) Walnuts, Chopped For the filling 900g (2lb) Philadelphia cheese 300g (10 oz.) Caster sugar 3tsp Vanilla extract 75ml (3fl oz.) Maple syrup 50g (2 oz.) Walnuts, chopped 4 large eggs For the decoration Handful of Walnuts, broken into pieces Method: 1. Lightly oil a 10” (25.5cm) x 3 “ spring form/loose based cake tin 2. Make the base by crushing the biscuits to fine crumbs (this can be done by placing the biscuits into a plastic bag and rolling a rolling pin over it) then add the melted butter and mix well. Press into the base of the tin (a glove made of clingfilm works well) and then place in the fridge while you make the cheesecake mix. 3. Heat the oven to 180c (160c fan oven) 350F/gas mark 4 and place a roasting tin ¾ full of hot water in the bottom of the oven (which helps to minimise any cracks in the cheesecake). 4. Whisk the cheese with an electric whisk until fluffy then add the sugar, vanilla extract, maple syrup and walnuts and whisk together. 5. Very slowly add the eggs (preferably one at a time), without over beating. 6. Pour mixture into the tin and bake in the centre of the oven for 50 minutes. 7. Take the cake out of the oven (it will have a slight wobble to it and may sink in the middle but this is normal) and leave on the side for 10 minutes. 8. Mix together all the ingredients for the topping and pour over the cake (this is also a good way to hide any cracks/sunken areas) and bake for a further 10 to 15 minutes. 9. Immediately after removing from oven drop some small pieces of broken walnuts to the top and place into fridge for a minimum of 2 hours (preferably overnight). Please Note This is a very light textured cheesecake. If you prefer, you can bake for 60 minutes rather than 50 stated for a slightly firmer result. 14 Holton St Mary Holton St Mary Village Hall First Friday of the Month Lunch Club can be hired at very reasonable rates! However, we are not required to inform patients individually but to advise patients by means of our website and practice leaflet that a named GP has been allocated. From a practical point of view this does not alter the arrangement whereby patients can choose which GP they wish to consult. CAN YOU HELP? If a patient wishes to know the name of their accountable GP please contact the practice. If you wish to express a preference as to which GP you have been assigned this can be accommodated. RDA Ipswich based at Bentley Riding School are looking for helpers to lead the ponies and/or sidewalk the young riders on Thursdays from 1 – 2.45 p.m (term time only). Car parking If you would like to know more or come along to visit during a session at Bentley Riding Centre please telephone Frances Torrington on 01473 312046/07711080658 Can patients please note that the car parking at the Ardleigh surgery is restricted to disabled patients and parents with ill babies. There are limited car parking spaces and too many cars trying to park creates a dangerous situation. Able bodied patients should, therefore, use the public car which is only a few minutes away. Patients are also requested not to use the staff car park at the rear of the surgery for parking or for turning around their car as staff cars have been damaged; two in the past year. You will receive a very warm welcome, make new friends and be achieving something really worthwhile. Previous experience with horses helpful but certainly not essential! Constable Country Medical Practice – Practice Update June 2015 Training Days Just a reminder that the practice will be closed from 1pm on the following dates for staff training: 24th June 2015 (Wednesday) 17th September (Thursday) 14th October (Wednesday) Update Following Our CQC Inspection We wrote to all households in early May to inform patients of the outcome of our CQC inspection and assure you of our commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the CQC. We also held an open evening on 1st June for patients to find out more about the practice and to answer any questions you had. This was a wellattended and the majority of patients entered into constructive dialogue. We took the opportunity to promote the new Patient Participation Group we are establishing with the help of Healthwatch, and will be holding the first meeting late June. On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions are picked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will ask you to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day. Pete Keeble Practice Manager The CQC visited the practice again on 15th May and were happy that we had made good progress since their report had been presented to the practice in April. They were satisfied that their most serious concerns had been fully addressed. The CQC will undertake a full inspection of the practice at the end of the summer at which time they will expect all issues highlighted in their report to be resolved. The practice has put in place an improvement plan and we are on track to fully deliver against that plan. Further details can be found on our Website www.constablecountrymedicalpractice.c o.uk. Waste & Recycling Collection Schedule 2015 Restricted Prescribing list Last year in Ipswich and East Suffolk, over £1m was spent on prescribing paracetamol, which can readily be obtained from pharmacies without prescription. The Clinical Commissioning Group is advising all practices to limit prescribing medication which can be obtained without prescription, often at low cost, from pharmacies and supermarkets. Such medicines include analgesics, emollients and antihistamines. There are always exceptions but please Recycling this week Rubbish collected this week 20 Kenny's SESAW July news Nayland Flower Show Saturday 8th August Important announcement! This is your official invitation to the SESAW Open Day, Fete and Fun Dog Show at midday on 26th July. We look forward to meeting old and new friends – particularly ex-SESAW dogs! There will be displays by ACE Agility, doggy games and 13 classes including a special one for our re-homed canines. Our volunteers love to see how the dogs are progressing, what better time for a get-together and photos? I must also mention the stalls, games, competitions, wildlife corner, BBQ, homemade food, ice cream van, bouncy castle and music from “Jazz Galore”. Visitors will also see the animals awaiting homes and view entries to our Facebook Photo Competition. All this in just four hours, whatever the weather as most of it will be under marquees and gazeboes. 2pm-5pm Nayland Village Hall, Church Lane (off High Street) CO6 4JH. Refreshments, produce stall, raffle entry 50p. There are 89 classes for vegetables, fruit, flowers, flower arranging, photography, art, craft, cookery, country drinks as well as family and children’s sections. Non members are welcome to enter classes – schedules and more info from www.naylandhortsoc.org.uk or Lorraine 01206 262807 The Village Life Group have kindly invited us to have a SESAW Pet's Corner at the Stratford St. Mary Mediaeval Fayre on 18th July. Barbara and friends look forward to seeing you there but Mum says I'm too little to stay out all after afternoon so come and meet me at our Open Day. LADIES’ TOURNAMENT 2015 Thursday 11th June was the annual Ladies’ Tournament at Dedham Tennis Club. Players from other clubs around Colchester & Dedham participated in the American tournament, which has been held for over 20 years. After a full morning’s play in glorious sunshine, 4 finalists took to the court for a 15 point tie-break to decide the winners, watched by an enthralled crowd. Hayley Everett of Dedham & Dominica Yannaghas of Hadleigh eventually overcame Christine Clark of Dedham & Sue Dixon of Lexden Rackets & Fitness Club. They were presented with prizes, vouchers kindly donated by Stringers’ World, after which a delicious lunch was served by the Dedham ladies. Over £450 was raised at our Bank Holiday Garage Sale which was more like a social occasion, thanks to all the lovely people who attended. Next month I'll tell you about our Autumn fundraising events and animals for rehoming. Currently Mum is busy feeding the annual influx of wildlife casualties and last week two litters of kittens were born. After all the painting, repairing and hammering in the garden it is time for me to inspect the Open Day preparations. They have made a good job of the fencing but I know there is still a space that a few can get through, including me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua!
