3 Directors Nominated for Board
Montrose ACT is governed by a nine-member board of directors. Board terms are staggered so that one-third of the board
terms come due at the same time. Board members serve threeyear terms and may serve no more than two consecutive terms.
A nominating committee is appointed to make recommendations each year. This year, two current Board members whose
terms expire at the end of the year are eligible for a second
term; these directors are Polly Hohlenkamp and Rich Parr. Both
of these hard-working and dedicated directors chose not to put
their names in for re-election. Prior to the creation of Montrose
ACT, Polly served on the MAMA Board and Rich served on
the Chamber of Commerce Board. Their insight and guidance
helped create the vision for Montrose ACT to move forward and
we thank them for all they did.
Helen Sebree joined the board of directors in June, following
the resignation of Tricia Joy. Helen was appointed by the board
to fulfill the remainder of the term, which expires the end of the
year. Helen was selected by the nominating committee to serve
On a side note...the high season for tourism may be over until
next year but let us not forget the importance of customer
service. Customer service plays such an important role in the
success of a business. It was once said, “A customer is the
most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on
us; we are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our
work; he is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider to our business; he is a part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving
him; he is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do
so.” Make sure that your staff is giving the customer service
that you would expect, and the customers deserve.

For 10 months I have been asking everyone to get involved and shape the future; so I am going to continue.
it doesn’t matter who you vote for or what party they represent; what matters is that you take the time to vote
for what you believe to be the best course of action. Don’t throw your rights away; every vote counts!
The 106th Black Canyon Gala is behind us now and it was a tremendous success for MACT. Thank you to
all that contributed auction items and to all that attended. We appreciate you. This is a major fundraiser for
MACT to help continue the programs that everyone benefits from. We can’t do it without you help.
Congratulations to Abel’s Ace Hardware for receiving the Retailer of the Year award—well deserved! Also
congratulations to all the nominees: Camelot Gardens, D’Medici Footwear, Horsefly Brewing Company,
Montrose Farmer’s Market & Safeway. Everyone is a winner in my book!
Speaking of congratulations, we have two new board members starting in January. Paul Derence (Hot Water
Productions) will be taking over the retail seat and Casey Wareham (Home Loan Insurance) will hold the
at-large seat. Thank you for your dedication to making Montrose a better place.
November is also the beginning of the Holiday season. Great smells, great feelings of family, friends &
community. The shopping will begin and the Black Fridays that have become famous seem to bring out the
best, and the worst, in people. Remember to smile and make a difference in someone’s day.

Earlier this month, Montrose, in cooperation with neighboring Delta County and Grand Junction,
hosted the “Western Colorado Golf Trail” press trip. Writers from The Golf Channel, Golf Vacations
Magazine, Exploration Travel Magazine, and Colorado Meetings & Events attended.
Cooperative public relations efforts such as this one are made possible because of our PR team’s relationship with other communities in our area. By partnering with these other destinations, we are able to
share the costs of hosting a group of writers like this, including the price for air and ground transportation, as well as meals, activities and lodging (when those things cannot be donated by industry
partners, like you).
Additionally, it gives us the opportunity to provide something the writers need to ensure their stories
are published – a “round-up” of activities. More often than not, publications require writers to feature
more than one destination in their articles, which is exactly what we served up.
We are starting to plan for 2013, so if you have a press trip idea you would like us to consider for next
summer or fall, please let us know. Or, if you donate an activity, meals and/or lodging for future press
trips please contact Jenni Sopsic at [email protected].

As a parent of one of the boys that played in the state tournament last month, I wanted
to extend a sincere thank you to all who were involved in making it happen.
We were all very impressed with the tournament [at Cobble Creek] and how smoothly
everything was run. We especially wanted to thank all the nice volunteers in the community who helped to shuttle the players at the 9th hole as well as helped to spot balls and
such. They were all so friendly and supportive of the boys. Your golf course is absolutely
beautiful and it was a pleasure experiencing it as well as the folks of Montrose. The boys
were welcomed at restaurants and you could really tell the community was glad to have
them there. This was such a refreshing change from past experiences.

Valley Booksellers. sharon moved to Montrose in 1979 and has been
happily living here ever since. In 1982, she and her husband purchased
the bookstore and became a fixture in the Montrose business scene.
sharon sold the business in 1998, but she is still a great asset to the
Montrose community.
sharon loves spending time at Montrose ACT and keeping up on all the

Montrose, CO – October 15, 2012 – Two of the
area’s vital nonprofits serving children—Court
Appointed special Advocates (CAsA-Voices for
Children) and the Black Canyon Boys & Girls
Club (BCBGC)—come together to host the
1st Annual Charity Dodgeball Tournament
benefitting local kids and honoring area veterans.

The Tournament, held at the olathe High school Gym on saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, kicks off at 8 am with team registration and
a rule review meeting. Dodgeball starts at 10am. The day will
culminate with crowning the victor and celebrating our Veterans
Karen Tuttle, executive director of CAsA-Voices for Children,
is excited about how the new event is coming together, “ I am
honored to partner with the Black Canyon Boys and Girls Club
to bring a new joint fundraising event to our area where law
enforcement, firefighters, eMs, and other agencies are given
a good reason—and a good cause—for throwing balls at one
another!” Justin Kiehl, executive director of the BCBGC, noted,
“I am excited to be working with CAsA-Voices for Children to
bring a FuN an NeW event to Montrose! No more driving, putting, and chipping at a fundraiser: it’s time to ‘Dodge, Duck, Dip,
Dive, Dodge!’
All teams are welcome—and law enforcement agency teams
are encouraged. Participants must be 18 years or older. The
tournament is double elimination, which guarantees each team
a minimum of two matches. There will be trophies and awards to
1st and 2nd place teams. The team registration fee is $300 per
team of six with one alternate. Team T-shirts are required.
spectator fees are $10 for 13 and older, $5 for kids 6-12, and
kids 5 and under are free. Veterans are also free in honor of
Veterans’ Day and all veterans’ service and sacrifice.
CAsA-Voices for Children provides a voice in court for every
abused and neglected child in the 7th Judicial District on the Western
slope of Colorado.
The Black Canyon Boys & Girls Club provides a fun, safe, positive
environment to enable every young person to develop into caring,
healthy, responsible citizens with attainable goals for a great future.

Hospice Care: it may
not Be what You think

When my mother-in-law was diagnosed in 1975 with terminal cancer at
the age of 56, there were three hospice programs in the United States,
and none where we lived. The last months of her life were really difficult – symptom management was terrible, her family’s conflict kept them
estranged, and she died after a month-long stay in the hospital, where her
grandchildren were not allowed to visit.
When people ask me how I stay passionate about hospice work after 25
years, I tell them that story.
Hospice is a difficult thing to grasp, if you have not had the experience.
Most people don’t want to think about the subject of death—more
specifically, they don’t want to think about their possible death or the death
of someone they love. This is easy to understand. It is also a great barrier
to people being aware of a service and a financial benefit that could lift the
burden of serious illness from them, and actually restore hope and sanity
to a very difficult time for families.
I am sad for families who have such great fortitude and self-reliance that
they “hold off ” on hospice care, thinking they are doing the right thing,
only to experience it for a few days and realize what a difference it could
have made for everyone.
A number of myths about hospice add to this dilemma. I have featured
a few below:
Myth: Hospice is just for people with no money – or Hospice is expensive.
Truth: Most health insurance covers hospice care, and under Medicare and Medicaid
it is 100% covered, including all medications, treatments, equipment and even
hospitalizations without any out-of-pocket expense. This benefit is available for six
months of care or longer, if the patient’s conditions qualify them.
Myth: Hospice is just for cancer patients or elderly people.
Truth: People with any kind of serious illness with a grave prognosis, at any age, are
eligible for hospice. Last year, only 35 percent of our patients had cancer.
We care for patients from the age of 2 months to over 100 years old.
Myth: Hospice will make patients give up hope and they may die sooner.
Truth: A recent published study showed that patients who receive hospice care do
much better in comparison to similar patients; and they live an average of 29 days
longer. Hospice brings hope to patients and families—for comfort and meaning in
the final stages of life.
Myth: If I enroll in hospice, I have to give up all of my medical treatment.
Truth: The goal of hospice is to assist patients to live as long as possible, as
comfortably as possible. Sometimes that involves treatments; sometimes that
involves tests. We look at every medical intervention in terms of its proven rate of
effectiveness in helping people get better or feel better.
Our dedicated hospice physicians, nurses, counselors, social workers,
nursing assistants and chaplains stand ready with a cadre of talented,
caring volunteers to help every patient and family in need of support.

“I love to shop,” exclaims Barb Slater. Although that may be one of the
many perks about volunteering for Heirlooms for Hospice, Barb and her
husband Art feel that they are reaping many rewards spending their retirement years giving back to the community.
Art and Barb have been married for more than 20 years and together give
a great deal of their time to Hospice & Palliative Care of Western Colorado and to Heirlooms for Hospice in Montrose.
Before Art retired he worked as a carpenter and those skills easily translate
to his volunteer position at Heirlooms. “It keeps me busy and I get to
keep all of these women in line,” he says with a smile. “I fix things around
here. I repair furniture, lamps and whatever needs fixin’,” he says.
Barb also has many duties at the store. She steams clothes, merchandises
items for the sales floor and checks the racks to make sure that everything
looks just right when customers come through the door.
You may even see the couple driving the streets of Montrose to help
promote Heirlooms for Hospice. “We have a 1930’s antique Ford and we
fasten a big Heirlooms magnet to the side and drive in the local Montrose
parades,” says Art.
“Volunteers like Barb and Art make Heirlooms such a special place. Their
willingness to go above and beyond makes Heirlooms not only a great
shopping destination, but a place to meet wonderful people all while
supporting a worthy cause,” says Montrose Heirlooms for Hospice store
manager, Sally Lawson.
Staffed primarily by volunteers, Heirlooms features gently-worn fine
clothing, antiques, home furnishings, fashion accessories, books and other
one-of-a-kind items donated by the community to support Hospice &
Palliative Care of Western Colorado. Hospice operates two Heirlooms
stores, one in Grand Junction and one in Montrose.
“It is such a privilege to be a part of this. We are like an extended family.
We share our problems, our joy and you feel great because you are helping
your community,” says Barb. And Art agrees, “Great fellowship and volunteering keeps me from becoming a couch potato!”

City report
City Council seeks
Applicants for Board
vacancies
Citizen participation is a key
component to the success of local
government.
Citizens interested in becoming involved in the City of Montrose
organization can participate by serving on local boards, committees and
commissions. The City Council is currently accepting applications for
vacant positions on two vital boards, the Montrose Planning Commission
and the Montrose Senior Pavilion Advisory Committee.
Montrose Planning commission
The Planning Commission consists of seven members selected from
qualified electors of the City and evaluates matters related to planning and
community development. Members of the Planning Commission serve
at the pleasure of the City Council and are appointed for four-year overlapping terms.
Three positions are available on the Planning Commission, which meets
the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the City
Council Chambers.
Montrose Pavilion senior center Advisory committee
The City Council is also seeking applicants for the Montrose Pavilion
Senior Center Advisory Committee. The purpose of this committee is to
advise the City Council on concerns of the seniors and to make suggestions and recommendations that will improve the Senior Center facility.
Two positions with three-year terms are available on the Senior Center
Advisory Committee, which meets the second Monday of each month at
1:00 p.m. in the Senior Center of the Montrose Pavilion.

The holiday season is quickly
approaching. There will be much to
do in our community—numerous
opportunities where we can celebrate
with each other and reach out to those less fortunate. These events and
service projects don’t just magically appear. Months and months of
planning and preparation are invested into the events scheduled during
the holiday season.
While many community-minded individuals will soon see the results
of their hard work and dedication, another group has joined forces to
celebrate a coming holiday in a very special way. This group is looking to
the 4th of July, 2013 when “The Wall that Heals”, a half-scale replica of
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. will rest in Montrose
from July 3–July 8. This replica is unique in that the travelling display also
includes an information center to assist visitors in locating a specific name
on The Wall using computers. Also included is a mobile museum with
information cases that display photos of service members whose names
are found on The Wall, along with letters and memorabilia left at The Wall
in D.C. The museum also includes a map of Vietnam and a chronological
overview of the conflict in Vietnam, which creates a historical and cultural
context of the era.
This planning committee is coming together again to make this special
opportunity possible. Many of you will remember when the “Vietnam
Moving Wall” visited Montrose in May, 2009. Over the course of
five days, nearly 17,000 residents and visitors came to Cerise Park to
experience The Wall. Among them were nearly 2,000 middle- and highschool students who were bussed to the site. They toured The Wall
through the experienced eyes of Vietnam Veterans who shared stories and
helped the students locate family members on The Wall.
City Council will interview applicants and make appointments during the
December 4, 2012, City Council meeting. The appointments will be
effective as of January 1, 2013.
If you would like to support bringing “The Wall that Heals” to Montrose
next 4th of July, we encourage you to become a Flag Sponsor. Flag
sponsors contribute $200 to the Montrose Community Foundation as a
tax-deductible gift. Your gift will be recognized by the placing of a flag
in Cerise Park over the holiday, providing a visual reminder of our thanks
to the heroes in the armed forces who have and currently are protecting

Tree Comes to

The Capitol Christmas Tree is coming to Montrose! This year
the Capitol Christmas Tree, which will be displayed at the u.s.
Capitol, will be traveling through our fair city of Montrose. The tree,
that has been harvested in Meeker, Colorado from the White River
National Forest, will travel across the country stopping at 30 cities
and military bases along the way.
Don’t miss your chance to catch a glimpse of this amazing tree
before it makes its way to its final destination in Washington D.C.
on the west lawn of the u.s. Capitol. Tree viewing will take place
on November 8th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on North Cascade Avenue
and Main street. Come see the tree, but stay downtown for great
pre-holiday shopping, kids’ activities, a gingerbread man workshop at Great Harvest Bread Company, yummy hot cocoa, and
even a visit from santa.
