Fun for the whole family
Home of the Black Canyon National Park.

With steep, sheer walls and deep,
cavernous gorges, the Black
Canyon is bursting with adventure.
From fishing, hiking, cross-country
skiing and camping to simply
beholding the magnificent views,
the options are endless.
Located on the canyon’s very
doorstep, Montrose adds
another side to your adventure.
Area wineries, a historic
downtown, museums, a BMX
complex for the not-so-faint-atheart, and so much more,
mean there’s always something
for everyone.
So, whether you’re seeking time
and excitement in the great
outdoors, or just want to get away
for a memorable weekend, take
a deeper look at Montrose.
It took millions
of years to create,
and only a single moment to mark you
forever
It’s amazing how something
that makes you want to shout
can leave you
absolutely s p e e c h l e s s .
The possibilities
go on for miles
At 2,700 feet deep and 48 miles long,
the Black Canyon holds plenty of
excitement for explorers of all ages.
Summer in the canyon offers fishing,
hiking, rock climbing, horseback riding,
nature walks, campfire programs and
other adventures. Winter brings a
whole new set of activities including
cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and
backcountry camping.
To describe the Black Canyon as dramatic
is something of an understatement. Carved
into the earth by the powerful Gunnison
River, its depth alone is enough to take your
breath away. From pine forests at the rim
to plunging gorges and shady, vertical walls,
no other canyon in North America combines
such a wide range of ecosystems, narrow
openings and startling depths.
You’ll be amazed at every turn.
From the bottom up
Experience the canyon from a whole new
angle as you glide along Morrow Point
Reservoir in a 42-passenger pontoon boat.
Each 1½ hour tour is led by a park ranger
or volunteer who will guide you through the
stories behind the beautiful scenery.
Tours run from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
One attraction that’s
hard to miss
A visit to the canyon simply wouldn’t
be complete without also seeing the
Painted Wall. Standing proudly at
2,250 feet (that’s 1,000 feet taller
than the Empire State Building),
it’s the highest cliff in Colorado.
The Black Canyon was originally designated a national monument in 1933.
However, in 1999, it was renamed a national park, placing it in the same league as
other renowned treasures like Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite.

Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area: Renowned
for some of the west’s wildest, most diverse landscapes, the Gorge
draws visitors to its spectacular geology, challenging whitewater and
world-class trout fishing. Majestic sandstone canyons, adobe badland
formations and diverse plant populations and ecosystems naturally give
way to primitive winding roads and trails just right for hiking, biking,
horseback riding and motorized sports. For hikers and horseback riders
seeking a moderately difficult experience and bikers looking to test
their skills on an expert-level, technical trail, the new Sidewinder Trail
provides the perfect challenge.
Flat Top and Peach Valley Recreation Area: Situated along
the west side of the 64,000-acre Gunnison Gorge National Conservation
Area, these recreation sites offer over 75 miles of single track and
primitive dirt road trail systems. Large expanses of arroyos, adobe hills
and pinyon-juniper uplands provide both unparalleled scenery and
challenging riding for mountain bikes.
Uncompahgre Plateau: Atop the Uncompahgre Plateau lies 10,300
foot Horsefly Peak, one of Colorado’s most awe-inspiring landscapes.
Precambrian granite, Morrison and Dakota sandstone, and Mancos
shale formations combine to create spectacular colors and vistas that
provide the perfect backdrop for sightseeing, photography, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking, snowmobiling and more.
Located only 11 miles from Montrose, the South Rim Visitor Center
is a great place to begin. Just head east on Highway 50,
then north for six miles on Colorado Highway 347.

Fishing
Montrose offers off-the-beaten-path adventure in the form of rock
crawling, 4x4/jeeping/ATVing and off-road motorcycling in some of
the most challenging, beautiful and diverse terrain around.
Winding through the beautiful Black Canyon National Park,
the Gunnison River offers some of the finest trout fishing available. These “Gold Medal Waters” have been designated by the
Colorado Wildlife Commission as providing ideal spots to catch
large trout. (Only 168 miles of Colorado’s 9,000 miles of trout
streams carry the “Gold Medal” signature.) Another great spot is
the Uncompahgre River. It runs through town and boasts excellent
year-round fishing. See the Colorado Division of Wildlife’s fishing
brochure for regulations or call (970) 252-6000.
Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area: The rustic
roads and trails that wind their way through the adobe badland
formations and sandstone canyons of this National Conservation
Area (NCA) are a playground for off-road sports. Off-route riding
(for vehicles no more than 50 inches wide) are permitted in designated “open play” areas. The 20-mile single-track Sidewinder
Trail is the newest addition to the Gunnison Gorge and is already
hugely popular with the locals. It snakes in and out of canyons
and is an expert-level, technical trail for those on two wheels.
Uncompaghre Plateau: A major landform and one of the
state’s most spectacular landscapes, the Uncompahgre Plateau
is a high domed upland rising reaching 10,300 feet at the top of
Horsefly Peak. It runs approximately 90 miles southeast to
the base of the San Juan Mountains providing ample terrain for
motorcycles, ATVs and rock crawlers.
Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway: This backcountry byway
explores 65 miles of spectacular peaks and narrow glacial valleys,
including 12,000 foot passes and well-preserved remains of stamp
mills, tramways and ghost towns. Portions of the route may be visited in normal passenger cars, but beyond these points the Alpine
Loop provides access to exceptional off-road excursions.

Montrose Downtown
F a m i ly F u n
Montrose is surrounded by majestic nature on all four sides with
the San Juan Mountains to the south, the Uncompahgre Plateau
to the west, Grand Mesa to the north and the Black Canyon of the
Gunnison National Park to the east. But right in the middle of all this
natural beauty, the Old West town of Montrose offers families so
many ways to enjoy themselves, they just might not want to leave!
History of
Montrose
Here are just a few ideas for kids of all ages:
Star Drive-In, Rose Bowl Bowling Alley, swimming at the Aquatic
Center, Curecanti National Recreational Area, Junior Ranger
program at the Black Canyon National Park, rock climbing at Main In
Motion, Russell Stover Candy Factory, Disc Golf at Baldridge Park,
Montrose Skate Park, Sledding at Cerro Summit, Hot Air Ballooning
From a mining supply center to a hub of outdoor activity, adventure and culture, Montrose has
played an integral role in the history of Colorado and the southwest for well over a century.
Originally inhabited by the Ute Indians, the first settlers arrived in the Uncomprahgre Valley
in the 1870s. After several rounds of names ranging from Pamona to Dad’s Town, the town
chose to go by the name of a popular leading character in Sir Walter Scott’s novel, “The
Legend of Montrose.”
Montrose’s early connections to the mining industry eventually gave way to a focus on agriculture as the 1909 opening of The Gunnison Tunnel made irrigation to the valley possible and
the production of produce, grain and livestock more lucrative industries. A major engineering
accomplishment recognized by a personal visit from President William Howard Taft, The Gunnison Tunnel still provides water from the Gunnison River to thousands of acres of Uncompahgre
Valley farmland today.
The year of Montrose’s founding, 1882, saw the arrival of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad
through town. And from that narrow gauge rail line to the arrival of the Montrose Regional Airport in 1988, visitors have journeyed from Grand Junction, Denver and all across the country
for the magnificent scenery, natural attractions, and abundance of outdoor activities, along
with the history and culture that are truly unique to Montrose.
