Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE
The
WOOLSAFE
Mark has
gone Green!
The WOOLSAFE Organisation
has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal
and EcoLogo in North
America, to enable those
WOOLSAFE approved products
that are ecologically responsible
to be recognised and
promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark
identifies those products that
not only are the most
suitable for wool and other
quality carpets, but also have
the right environmental
characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and
maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and
thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage
the fibres.
Deal with spillages as soon as possible,
preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could
do with a really good clean, you can either do the job
yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning
company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself
make sure to use only WOOLSAFE-approved
products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package:
WOOLSAFE-approved carpet
care products have been
independently and scientifically
tested and are safe and
effective for cleaning and
maintaining all types of carpets
and rugs.
General Rules for
Spot Removal
• Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet
roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of
the first WOOLSAFE Licensees
in the UK to have a ‘green’
product certified. It is expected
that other products will follow
shortly.

• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment –
if unsure, use solvent first
• Always work from the edge of the spot inwards
• BLOT, do NOT rub
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time,
applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work
into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed
carpet tiles
• When using solvents always ensure there is plenty
of fresh air ventilation
• Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters
with clean water
• Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for
Carpets and Rugs
Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the
house is highly recommended, as they will significantly
reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should
be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed
from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly
themselves.
Protective treatments
Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to
reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments,
while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will
eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular
cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer
can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE
accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest
WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our
website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE
HOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres,
including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the
WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet
manufacturers!

Never use any detergents such as dishwashing liquids,
soaps or other cleaners recommended for general
household use. Although they may clean the carpet
satisfactorily they will almost certainly cause problems
such as rapid re-soiling, colour bleeding or other damage
to the pile or backing of the carpet.
They are fully qualified to investigate carpet and rug
complaints on-site on behalf of carpet manufacturers,
retailers, cleaning companies and carpet owners. They can
carry out or commission tests where required, and will
provide comprehensive reports.

COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as
creels - and usually each batch produces
between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width,
depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe
used by the dyer remains constant, and is
followed to the letter, in each separate
production the colour reproduction will vary
from batch to batch. However production is
matched back to the original or master
sample to ensure that the colour remains
‘within a commercial tolerance’.
This process if not an exact science and a
commercial tolerance is subjective but
nevertheless is usually the professional
judgement of the head dyer based on his/her
experience.
A greater level of tolerance is required on
blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure
perfect colour matching it is advisable that a
single width be used in any installation
requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile
travelling in different directions, even though
they be from the same batch will appear not
to match.
For further information please check with the
manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may
not be from the same batch as current
production and therefore should be used as a
guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which
is created during production when spun yarn
is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto
the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be
removed without detrimental effect upon the
carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre
is only a small fraction of the total fibre
contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by
responsible manufacturers
to help you help your customer
to make
an informed choice.
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet
where one or more loops in the continuous
pile is pulled through the primary backing of
the carpet. This is usually due to some local
condition, possibly some sharp object which
has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted
in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by
trimming the offending end level with the
rest of the pile. They should not be left as this
could result in further loops being pulled and
developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its
way to the surface and stand proud of the rest
of the pile. This is probably due to one end of
the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J
shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial
action merely requires that the offending tufts
be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the
pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet
has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a
different direction to the natural lie of the pile
whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at
differing angles resulting in the creation of
light and dark patches on the carpet. This will
occur on all pile fabrics but can be more
noticeable on plainer carpets because the
shadows created by pile pressure will not be
disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other
household fabrics and objects have the
capacity to store it. Static is caused by the
build up of static electricity upon personnel
in a dry environment and is discharged when
a person makes contact with an object which
can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or
filing cabinets, etc).
The static charges will vary in intensity
depending upon the individual, air humidity
and the contact materials. Static is more
usually associated with synthetic materials as
they do not retain moisture very well but it
can and does occur with wool in very dry
room conditions.
include
the
measures
Preventative
introduction of moisture into the room or in
situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in
use. The degree of fade can vary depending
on the colour chosen and the local conditions
to which the carpet is subjected.
Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra
violet light which is found in daylight, but is
accelerated when sunlight shines directly
onto the carpet. This has the effect of
lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as
exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair.
Wool is after all animal hair.
Protection should be given to carpets exposed
to such conditions just as you would protect
other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered
justified if it failed to meet the required shade
standard when tested to the British Standard
BS1006 (1990).
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
PILE REVERSAL
(SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap
of the carpet changes direction and thus
reflects light at different angles showing the
effects of shading which can become
permanent. It is also described as
‘watermarking’. This can happen to every
carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton,
Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian
or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be
more apparent on plain carpet because heavy
patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur
quite quickly after installation. A tremendous
amount of research has been carried out over
many years by many institutes to determine
the cause of this phenomenon but none of it
has proved conclusive. There is no commonly
known manufacturing process which can
cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore
it is not a manufacturing fault. For further
information please check with individual
manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point
load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is
unreasonable to expect the carpet not to
indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place,
the longer will be the time for the pile to
recover. In the case of very heavy loads in
place for a considerable time, the recovery
time can be very considerable.
It must be remembered that it is not only the
pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the
underlay will also indent and the backing of
the carpet may also distort into the
indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s
will recover well and some less well
depending upon their composition, thickness,
density etc.
The use of cups below furniture legs can
spread the load and the net result is a larger
area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy
static load can be measured in the laboratory,
using the test method described in BS 4939
and many manufacturers will have data on
this aspect of carpet performance. In this test
the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the
degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour
and 24 hours. Since there are so many
different underlay’s however, it is very rare
for the recovery from a heavy static load to be
evaluated on carpet and underlay.
Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning
with a rotating brush machine) will speed up
recovery but in the case of serious
indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth
or a steam iron together with a blunt darning
needle to carefully tease up the pile can be
beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet
the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic
which eventually flattens the pile particularly
in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will
flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant
on the amount of traffic to which it is
subjected and the construction (tuft
density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the
product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local
condition to which the carpet has been
subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of
maintenance programme. There is nothing we
as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in
use. There are several types of soiling which
are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks,
cordials or any drink which contains sugar,
particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a
stain. In such instances, professional help
should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can
result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the
obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting
boards for instance, dark lines appearing on
surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards.
Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be
seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes
shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due
to the air carried on a draught under the
carpet escaping through minute holes both in
the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust
deposited on the pile much like a filter action.
In such installations, the use of a lining paper
is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise
the consumer when the carpet is measured of
any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or
floorboards and the consumers responsibility
to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts,
is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a
resulting complaint is to be avoided.
INSTALLATIONS
We recommend that all carpets are laid in
accordance with BS5325:2001 (a copy of which
can be obtained from your library or HMSO)
or as per National Institute of Carpet Fitters
installation manual (Tel 0115 958 3077) for
further information.

TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet
produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of
carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet,
hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary
backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A
heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a
secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide
variety of styles and textures can then be created using various
techniques.
LOOP PILE
Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade,
bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia.
The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon,
polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect
underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and
may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly
flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual
appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres.
The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend
between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three
loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very
forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high
traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE
Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony,
but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set.
They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly
texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and
dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should
be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together
to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and
vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home.
More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but
still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for
prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing
as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a
velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of
high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel.
The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used –
although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned
axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to
axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre
is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create
a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality
carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat
weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a
wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish.
These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily
and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres
lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for
occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP
When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of
surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of
colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and
stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general
purpose rooms in the home.
Shag pile • Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to
50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface
flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is
tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is

Flooring factsheet
Underlay
In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and
laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best
opportunities to add value to every sale - with good
profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are
understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay!
Retailers should create an assumption that new
underlay is always required, the only decision is which
type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can
walk on samples with different grades of underlay and
feel the difference has shown excellent results - some
manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will...
• Improve underfoot comfort
• Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening
• Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear
• Improve thermal insulation and warmth
• Increase sound insulation
• Smooth out sub-floor imperfections
• Last the lifetime of the carpet
Poor or old underlay will...
• Feel hard and unwelcoming
• Reduce carpet life
• Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots
• Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly
• Not meet British Standards
How thick?
A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with
gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy
traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination
of thickness and density is all important as a thick
underlay with low density may not perform well.
Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will
need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations
with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
Types
Sponge rubber
The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or
waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different
applications. It performs well for comfort and has a
durable spring retention.
PU (polyurethane) foam
PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically
made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides
excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of
thickness options - and its light weight helps handling.
The product can be re-cycled again after use.
Crumb rubber
Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall
- offering maximum protection but a little less comfort
(and very good over stair nosings).
Laminate underlay
There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate
flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor
and helping the boards float above any imperfections in
the sub-surface.
Combination
A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good
combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also
allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt.
Underfloor heating underlay
Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers
offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a
combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means
the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0.
Felt
This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is
made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to
create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation.
Still a very popular choice among contractors when
stretch fitting woven carpets
Pre-tackified underlay
A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt
and PU. A removable system for heavy use when
comfort is desired

Cormar steps to heaven
Cormar Carpets are offering consumers the chance to ‘sink your feet into a
slice of heaven’ with their brand new bedroom range.
Made from 100% easy care, hard wearing polyester, Heavenly is a 1/8th gauge
carpet, tufted at 24oz and features a luxurious deep pile.
The dreamy collection, available in a 4m width only, is ideal for bedrooms and
at £16 per sq m represents great value for money, making it affordable for most
families or first time buyers on a restricted budget.
But it is the palette of 12 fashionable plain and flecked colours which looks set
to make Heavenly a best seller. Soft and gentle pastels, such as Silver Cloud
and peachy Starburst, add a fresh modern touch to the bedroom whereas the
core of natural beiges including Cherub and Harvest Moon bring a classic feel.
“While colour is making a welcome return, people still want a calm, uncluttered
neutral look in their bedroom,” said David Cormack, marketing director at
Cormar Carpets. “In Heavenly we believe we have come up with a balanced
collection of natural creams and browns as well as subtle shades such as
moody blues and delicate greens that are the perfect combination for a serene
bedroom.”

Knightsbridge (pictured left).
Offered in both plain and berber styles, Knightsbridge is made from 100%
Durasoft nylon for a soft to the touch feel that also provides performance for
the busiest areas of the home, making this long cut pile style suitable for
bedrooms, living rooms and everywhere in between.
Using the flexibility of Knightsbridge’s eight plain colours and five berber
colours, homeowners can use the carpet to add variety to carpet within the
home, while also ensuring that performance is not sacrificed.
The Durasoft nylon featuring in Knightsbridge has a look more in keeping with
wool carpets, thanks to some clever fibre characteristics, but it comes without
the maintenance drawbacks and with a brilliance and saturation of colour that
is virtually unparalleled.
Coping well with daily life, Knightsbrisdge is an ideal ‘whole house’ carpet as
Howard Lindsay, Sales Manager, residential division explains: “Knightsbridge is a
premium tufted carpet that uses nylon to provide excellent performance levels.
Commonly used in high traffic office environments, nylon is ideal for households
looking for a tough and hardwearing carpet. However, tough and hardwearing
doesn’t have to mean hard to the touch and Knightsbridge has a beautifully soft
texture which many would have trouble separating from wool carpets.”
All colours and styles within the tufted Knightsbridge collection are available in
a 3.66m width with a pile weight of 65oz.

The rich tapestry of tiles

InterfaceFLOR is designed to mimic traditional wallto-wall broadloom carpet while enjoying all the
benefits of modular flooring.
The exciting, multicoloured, textured loop pile range
combines a handcrafted feel with a modern look.

hardwearing characteristics of coarse and chunky
woollen fabrics.

warm shades with one or two contrasting colours to
complement the palette. True to form,
InterfaceFLOR has developed Tapestry as one of the
most sustainable loop piles ever; it is made of both
recycled BCF nylon yarn and recycled backing.
Tapestry has been designed for installation in, for
example, commercial offices, government and public

in Hannover. These new collections are Woods SR and Stones SR, both in the
top handling IVC quality called Matchgrip along with Luxury Touch SR which is
in IVC’s super Maggiore construction.
Each of these three ranges has retained the best sellers from their previous
lives and has been matched with superb new designs in luxurious wood and
stone effects, both in traditional and contemporary styling. Something for
everyone you could say.
The complete Domo collection will also be on display on the IVC stand in
Hannover, alongside the Leolan family of products, following its successful
integration into the IVC group in October 2008.
No changes to the Domo line up of cushioned vinyl products are planned for
the first half of 2009.
Another exciting new product development from IVC being launched at the
next Domotex fair will be a new luxury vinyl tile collection called Stepper.
Stepper comes in four different themes with a “peel & stick” backing for ease of
installation. The whole package comes with a complete merchandising

Balta promotes partnership with customers
The Balta Group will be prominent at the 20th Domotex in Hannover this
month, the most important international trade show for floor coverings. All
Balta business units - Balta Rugs, Balta Broadloom, ITC and Balterio - will be
showing their latest innovations.
In these difficult times, Balta Broadloom is stepping up the efforts and
investments to bring innovative products to the market. This is the time to
convince customers that Balta is the reliable partner for the future with the
best product offer and service.
Woolmaster carpets is the brand name for Balta's superior wool ranges. Wool
is soft and "feels like heaven" but is in the mean time durable, energy saving and
safe. Besides the traditional berber ranges, Balta Broadloom is launching a large
number of new wool ranges with more colour than ever before.
Stainsafe is the Balta brand name for PP ranges with a 10 year stainsafe warranty.
Young children love to play on a carpet and sometimes carelessly make a stain so
Stainsafe carpets are easy to clean. In 2009, Balta Broadloom is bringing a lot
more colour and different weight options in the PP heatset collections.
Other product innovations for 2009 include:
'Tempo Tonic': a textured fine gauge loop pile in bright & young tonic colours.
The highly successful face-to-face woven range 'Stainsafe Super Wiltax' will be
extended with a new theme collection called "Pubs & Clubs".
Balta Broadloom is launching at Domotex its new "Healthcare Collection" with
a selection of durable fully impervious carpet ranges including the well known
'Gala' and a graphics cut pile collection with different patterns called 'Techno'.
Prestige - a new shag structure product from ITC will be
showcased at Domotex

British Wool at Domotex 2009
The environment and 100%
natural carpet yarns will take
centre stage for British Wool at
Domotex 2009.
Showcasing ‘Shades of Nature’ – the latest British
Wool yarn innovation presentation box at the
event, the BWMB is bringing their successful
100% natural tufted carpet yarn collection to an
even bigger audience.
“We have already had enormous interest in this
collection of British breed and blended yarns. But
we are seeing extraordinary level of interest from
the international market, which has taken the
environmental agenda on with force during the
last eighteen months,” explained Richard Poole,
European Business Manager at the BWMB.
The tufted carpet yarn collection features nine
breed type yarns and three blended yarns. The

yarns are undyed and can be seen in their most
unadulterated yarn form.
‘Shades of Nature’ – British Wool yarn innovations at Domotex
Richard explained, “This innovative tool is about
enabling people to understand the potential of
using a particular breed or type of wool to
enhance their product range.
“We know the eco trend is gaining pace,
particularly in the commercial sector and the importance of developing product to meet stringent buyer specifications that
demand the product content and supply are verifiable and transparent to eco scrutiny, is being driven forward rapidly.
"Regulatory compliance is undoubtedly looming in the contract markets. By forging forward with our environmental agenda
British Wool is not only responding to the marketing trend for the environment but also helping our licensees prepare for
forthcoming regulatory change and ultimately achieve greater customer satisfaction.”
British Wool can be found in Hall 5, stand F38. The stand operates as a mini business centre and always provides a useful
meeting place. “We attend Domotex to promote British Wool and to support our licensees and textile industry partners
that visit but do not exhibit. It is a very important gathering of the worldwide industry and we hope that the UK trade
will make the effort to attend.”

The British Wool column
All the way to America…to fly the British Flag
The British Wool stand will have a distinctly British theme at Surfaces
2009 - the North American flooring show held annually in Las Vegas.
This year the BWMB is supported by a strong group of UK manufacturers
including Brintons, Axminster Carpets, Cavalier Carpets and the designer
flatweave manufacturer Fleetwood Fox.
Choosing a bold Union Jack theme with highly inspired exhibition panels designed by the British Wool in-house creative team, the BWMB has chosen
to define the British Wool brand and harness the strength of American interest
in all things British.
…our message is simple ‘British Wool is excellent for carpet’…
“The BWMB stand will exhibit an excellent range of British Wool carpet from
leading manufacturers creating a strong stand with plenty to offer the US
visitor,” said Tim Booth, product development manager at the BWMB.
“Our message is simple - ‘British Wool is excellent for carpet’. The Union Jack
flag is integral to our Shepherd’s Crook logo and our British manufacturers are
proud of it. Certain international markets respond well to British origin and it
is important to use all our benefits to the full advantage of our manufacturing
partners, which have chosen to support our US marketing programme.”
British Wool will be at Surfaces 2009 in Las Vegas
Marriott retailer prize
draw pulls in entries
The general carpet trading may not be
strong but the British Wool Prize Draw
promotion is continuing to attract
consistent entries and with eight
weekend breaks for two at a sumptuous
Marriott hotel as prizes, it is clearly
proving an enticing promotion.
“This is a great prize for a carpet consumer and we
suspect that the retailer likes it too and so those retailers
that are using it as a promotional tool are having a really
positive response. Some prize draws are very throwaway
but the consumer has definitely not discarded this one.
“Perhaps the fact that short breaks are now considered a
bit of a luxury has something to do with it – as the credit
crunch continues to bite, “ said Tim Booth, product
development manager.
The British Wool Prize Draw is attracting good interest.
from The Stocklists
The promotion runs until the end of March and winners
will be drawn during April. Winners and retailers will be
featured in this column.

Axminster earns its stripes
Fuelling the growing demand for new and interesting carpet styles for the home, Axminster Carpets’ latest
addition, Simply Natural Stripe, offers another example of a quality driven, fashion-led range that is designed to
meet flooring trends head-on.
First introduced to visitors at the National Floor Show, Harrogate, in early September, the new Stripe Collection is
a stunning take on the already established household favourite Simply Natural.
Simply Natural Stripe comes in six colour variations and combines contrasting pinstripes with a natural backdrop
tone. The multi-level loop pile construction, where the contrasting darker tone is set deep, adds a textural element
to the design and underlines the fine attention-to-detail synonymous with the Axminster Carpets name.
Simply Natural Stripe utilises Axminster Carpets’ unique six-ply Cable-Tec yarn, where finely spun singles are
twisted together to make superior two-ply yarn before three ends of two-ply are cabled together to produce
one of the most resilient carpet piles in production. Manufactured from Axminster Carpets’ Home Spun 100%
pure new wool and with superb durability and appearance retention, Cable-Tec possesses all the warmth and
gentleness associated with wool carpets.
Joining Grosgrain and Ribgrass in the Simply Natural collection, Stripe delivers consumers a carpet at the forefront
of interior style, but thanks to its carefully chosen colourways, one that has lasting appeal and which is matched by
its high quality construction. Rated for Extra Heavy Domestic use, Stripe is available in both four and five-metre
widths.
Richard Lawrence, Marketing Manager, Axminster Carpets, comments:“Our Simply Natural collection has been a
runaway success, bringing consumers a range of fashion-led carpets possessing the very best in tufted quality. The
new Stripe is set to enhance the Simply Natural portfolio even further, bringing additional scope to the collection
and ensuring that retailers benefit from proven quality and the very latest in style.”

Haggis and the high rollers
Haggis and ‘high rollers’ helped raise nearly £3,000 for the Scottish Furnishing Trades
Benevolent Association.
Some 95 people attended the association’s annual gala dinner at the Hilton Glasgow
Grosvenor hotel (Wednesday November 19) where the meal included traditional haggis and
was followed by a casino night and raffle.
“It was a tremendous night with some incredible prizes to be won thanks to the generosity
of so many companies and individuals,” said guest Nigel Blake, interim chief executive of
‘sister’ organisation, the English-based Furnishing Trades Benevolent Association.
Both the FTBA and SFTBA are the only dedicated charities in the furnishings sector. Said
Christina Traynor, SFTBA president: “This year we will be donating about £33,000 to
members in need of financial help – made possible through events such as this and the
generosity of everyone concerned.”
How FTBA help in on hand
When Jennifer, a 54-year-old single woman, was diagnosed with
breast cancer earlier this year, it wasn’t just the worry of treatment
and what might happen that left her feeling fearful.
With no partner to support her and just sick pay to live on, sliding
into serious debt became a very real problem.
Thankfully, as an upholstery machinist who has spent more than 20
years working with different furniture companies, Jennifer has been
able to turn to the Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association for a
helping hand.
Now, the industry’s only dedicated charity has agreed to pay for the
MOT she desperately needs to keep her car on the road. Having
her own transport is vital so she can make the daily 34-mile round
trip to a Midlands hospital for radiotherapy treatment.
The FTBA has also agreed to pay up to £300 towards other
household bills plus the cost of her next television license.
“Jennifer’s story is sadly all too common,” says FTBA interim chief
executive Nigel Blake. “The worries of dealing with something like
breast cancer are enough on their own without having all the
attendant financial problems that can follow in its wake.
“Jennifer has been extremely concerned about falling behind with
her bills and getting into debt since she was forced to take sick
leave. At a time when household bills have risen significantly, her
income has dropped dramatically, adding to the rest of her
problems.”
Malcolm Clark of Furniture World, Ayr, with SFTBA President
Christina Traynor. Malcolm won ‘£1,370’ in chips at the
roulette wheel making him the clear winner of the 40” Sony
flat screen TV donated by Celebrity Furniture.
Christmas cheers for charity givers
The Furnishing Trades’ Benevolent Association is £2, 715 better off this Christmas thanks
to 29 companies who made generous donations to the FTBA.
“We also owe great thanks to the four industry publications which this year supported
our Christmas card initiative and helped make the campaign such a success for us,” said
FTBA interim chief executive Nigel Blake.
The FTBA has run its Christmas Card Campaign since 1993.The idea is for companies
across the furniture and furnishings industry to donate what they would have spent on
cards for customers, suppliers and other associates, to the FTBA. In exchange, the FTBA
has full page advertisements in trade press titles in December, passing on the season’s
greetings of all the companies taking part and listing everyone supporting the scheme.
“Charities increasingly need to build on proven ways of raising money and this particular
initiative has worked well for us for several years thanks to the support of everyone
involved,” said Nigel. “Christmas can be a particularly hard time for those in our industry
who might find themselves up against unexpected difficulties, so it’s good to know that
there are companies willing to contribute to the funds that we use to help those who
have worked in our industry and are now in need of assistance.”
42
January 2009
The FTBA has also offered Jennifer the chance to apply for a respite
break through its Edenfield holiday scheme so she can get away for
a few days at a place of her choosing.
“We are able to offer many different forms of help to those who
have worked long and hard in our industry when they hit hard
times,” said Nigel Blake. “It might be through a weekly annuity, a grant
towards an unexpected cost or through the holiday scheme.”
Since August this year, the FTBA has approved £15,500 in one off
grants and holiday contributions.
Said Nigel Blake: “The very experienced team who sit on our
benefits committee look at each case individually to decide how best
we can help people. As a result we are able to make a very real
difference to the lives of many people each year.”
“We are able to offer many
different forms of help to
those who have worked long
and hard in our industry

Flower on Flooring
by Dennis Flower
Sound advice for health and happiness!
The New Year again signals that Domotex is very nearly upon us.While readers
can find more general information elsewhere in this month's magazine, the
reason for mentioning the event in this column is that the forthcoming show
will feature a special focus on the acoustic properties of a room.
The two day programme on 19 and 20 January will include lectures, workshops
and best practice presentations, combined with practical simulations and
experiments looking at how to create attractive room settings that also take
acoustics into account. The intention is to promote the message that
consideration of sound reflection and absorption can create a healthier and
happier environment.
Suppliers of flooring products are taking this into account when designing their
products, especially in the area of sound absorption. An example of this is Sonic
Gold Excel underlay from Novostrat, delivering a noise reduction of 22dB in a
light weight format. The company states that a roll will only weigh a fraction of
that of a roll of traditional underlay, making it easier to store, handle, deliver
and, of course, to lay.
To the user, the range of underlays delivers the required level of cushioning
under a laminate floor, says Novostrat, even levelling out minor underfloor
imperfections. Other properties include high impact resistance, damp-proofing
and, because of their low tog rating, the underlays within the range will not
reduce the efficiency of underfloor heating systems.
The company has found that developers are now specifying Novostrat products
because they contain no harmful HCFCs, halogens or heavy metals used in
their manufacture and, at the end of their working life, can be fully recycled and
reused in the manufacture of other primary commercial or domestic products.
The company states that it is the largest manufacturer of polyethylene foam in
Ireland and its range of insulation products for domestic and commercial
applications is growing steadily. From its economy underlays to its highest
performance products, Novostrat says that it markets on price as well as
performance and thinks this is probably the most important of the boxes to
tick given the current economic situation.
Another supplier that has given thought to this subject is Interfloor, which
states that all its Duralay and Tredaire products offer sound insulation when
used with carpet. It has also developed three underlays for use with wood and
laminate, potentially the floorcoverings known for being the noisiest.
The advanced noise reducing benefits of two of the company's Timbermate
underlays also feature a built-in damp proof membrane, eliminating the need for
extra moisture protection such as polythene sheeting.
The three Timbermate options include Silentfloor Gold (53 SONE tested),
offering the highest specification acoustic performance and built-in damp proof
membrane. A high density, 4.2mm gauge underlay, it is designed as a superior
product where top performance is demanded, says Interfloor.
Timbermate Excel (56 SONE tested) is the original ‘all in one’ rubber underlay
with a built-in damp proof membrane. A 3.75mm gauge high density resilient
rubber underlay, it meets most domestic and contract needs.
Last but not least,Timbermate Duratex (57 SONE tested) is the traditional
high density rubber underlay, designed for wood-based suspended floors where
moisture is not an issue. This is a 3.75mm gauge, high density resilient rubber
underlay suitable for domestic and contract installations, the company states.
In addition to their acoustic properties, Interfloor reports that the underlays
can also be used as a sub-floor where there are surface imperfections, act as a
dust stop and help prevent overstraining of wood and laminate boards and are
also quick and easy to install.
Richard Bailey, managing director of Floorwise, says that underlay is essential
for wood and laminate floors, as they are the largest single surface within a
home and therefore have the greatest impact on noise. 'These floorcoverings
are renowned for their noise transmission and reflection and by using
Floorwise’s Acoustica underlay products, the consumer can drastically improve
their performance,' he said.
Each is subject to a number of sound tests, resulting in SONE ratings of 53
for Acoustica Best, 54 for Better and the same score for Good, says Bailey.
Impact noise is also considered, and the Acoustica products have achieved
noise transference ratings of 24dB for Best, 23dB for Better and 22dB for
Good. Both tests should be taken into account before choosing an underlay,
says Bailey. He also advises retailers be aware that some manufacturers may
test products without floor coverings on top and these results are of little
meaning – for example a foam or rubber-based product without a wood or
laminate floorcovering on top will drastically reduce the sound of a falling
object, but with a floorcovering on top and under compression, the results
will be very different.

Leading the blinds
Market Cross Carpets of Guisborough have just launched a trade only window blind wholesale
operation. As an established carpet retailer, blinds have become an intregal part of the business and
have grown from being a valuable add on sale, to now being 25% of the business. Even if a customer
does not like blinds, the chances are that they will want a roller for the kitchen and bathroom and a
vertical for the patio door. Historically, the only thing that has put carpet shops off blinds is the fitting.
Market Cross offer a full training service complete with an idiot proof manual and can usually sort out
any problems over the phone. They also supply a very simple trade/retail price guide. All blinds are

Business News - Reader Survey
Our retailers hold their nerve for 2009
Prospects are looking less gloomy in 2009 than you might expect, according to a survey of readers of The Stocklists magazine – unless you particularly like selling
laminate, oc course!
Nearly 60% of our readers reckon this year will see sales hold steady or improve - an impressive 35% are even predicting sales growth of 10% or more in the next 12
months. Just a gloomy 4% felt that there would be a sales slump of more than 10% in 2009.
The Stocklists surveyed 150 readers by telephone in November and December last year to ask about sentiment for the New Year and were asked which products were
set for success in the new season. Consumers are coming back to carpet according to our retailers and there was an overwhelming vote of confidence by two-thirds of
respondents in twist as the best seller of 2009.
In an encouraging trend, cheaper carpet is seen to be becoming less attractive whereas quality is set to sell well - although retailers mention that 100% wool was an
investment too far for many consumers but 80/20 is very strong and stain-resistant popular. Vinyl products are showing increased signs of sales growth according to some
stores.
The loser is laminates. The biggest single vote in our survey was the response by 70% of retailers that
sales of laminates were failing and that this trend would continue in 2009 – a result that is unlikely to
disappoint most of the independent retailers.
We asked about what people would most like to change in 2009 and the answers were as varied as
retailers individual needs but less discounting, more honesty about pricing and better promotion were
singled out. Several uncharitable comments about Carpetright cannot be printed here!
A repeated response was the call for more colour. Retailers feel that consumers are more confident
about colour but, despite obvious efforts in the industry, there’s a sense that they are still under-served
amid the acres of beige. Brown emerged from the survey as the single most tipped colour for success in
2009 with green a close second. Stripes are seeing a surge in popularity but a rumoured resurgence in
pattern appears to have been short-lived with some retailers suggesting that consumers are becoming
more resistant.
