From Dr. Daniel Haber
Dear Friends,
Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the ninth annual
the one hundred.
Since 2008, the one hundred has recognized 900
honorees from 31 states and eight countries. This initiative
transcends any one institution or organization – it is about
the cancer community at large and the knowledge that
everyone has the power to make a meaningful difference in
the fight against this disease. We hope that by spreading this message, we will help
inspire and empower more people to take action.
Through the one hundred we also raise vitally important funds to support research
and patient care here at the Mass General Cancer Center. We are constantly pushing
the envelope towards new research and discoveries, but never losing focus on our
core mission to treat those who are sick today with the most advanced therapies
available and in the most compassionate and supportive way. The funds raised
through the one hundred help make this possible.
For example, thanks in part to funds raised through the 2015 event, we were able
to launch a new Center for Cancer Immunology this past fall. We recruited four
world-class scientists to this effort, including one of this year’s honorees, and the
team is already working at a furious pace to improve and discover new immunebased treatment strategies. For cancers that are currently incurable, immunotherapy
offers patients a strong potential for long-term remissions, and even potential cure.
Leveraging the unique resources of the nation’s top hospital and our Cancer Center
which has pioneered targeted therapies, I am confident we will be able to bring these
innovative treatments to patients as quickly and safely as possible.
To all of our donors and guests here tonight, thank you. We will continue to need your
support in the months and years ahead and hope you will continue to stand with us.
To our amazing honorees, thank you for your partnership in our shared mission
to eradicate cancer. Through the one hundred, we recognize and celebrate your
commitment, creativity and compassion. From Alaska to Australia, you are making a
difference in your communities in a hundred different ways. Please keep up the good
work and know that what you do, every day, matters.
Sincerely,
Daniel A. Haber, MD, PhD

From Larry Renfro
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the ninth annual celebration of the one hundred.
My wife Rosie and I were honored to be asked to become more
involved with the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center
and we are proud to serve as chairs of this inspiring event for the first
time this year. With all of you, we share a steadfast responsibility to
bettering the lives of others. Thank you for joining us in support of
this mission.
Rosie and I believe in the power of community. At the center of
the one hundred is the belief that together, we can change
how we fight cancer. Many of this year’s honorees possess an
extraordinary ability to build relationships and utilize connections to
make a difference in their communities and beyond. Tonight, you
will learn about a Mass General infusion nurse who is an invaluable
resource for many of her friends and neighbors in need of support
after a cancer diagnosis. You will meet a volunteer who leads
“Magic Makers” workshops, teaching others the art of creating wigs
for young girls undergoing cancer treatment across the country.
And you will hear the story of a man who turned a set of personal
photographs into a book that inspired joy and laughter in patients
with breast cancer around the globe.
Proceeds from this evening’s event will create opportunities for
Mass General Cancer Center caregivers and researchers to pursue
new leads, discover new therapies, and enhance the patient care
experience. Your support tonight is crucial in ensuring that we can
continue on our path to solve cancer in our lifetime.
Thank you again for supporting the one hundred as we celebrate
this remarkable class of honorees and the hope that they bring to
their communities. We look forward to collaborating with all of you to
change how we fight cancer, together.
Sincerely,

What the one hundred Supports
Funds raised through the one hundred support the Mass General
Cancer Center, a leader in personalized medicine, early-detection
technologies and innovative supportive care. Discoveries made at
Mass General benefit cancer patients worldwide.
ABOUT THE MASSACHUSETTS GENERAL HOSPITAL CANCER CENTER
Established in 1988 by Massachusetts General Hospital trustees to lead a major
effort against cancer, the Mass General Cancer Center is a powerful clinical and
research enterprise, with an extensive platform for discovery and strong global
relationships. After 28 years, the Cancer Center has an exceptional record of
major discoveries and is recognized as an international leader in the new field
of personalized, scientifically-driven cancer therapies, the most significant and
promising advancement in cancer treatment.
The Mass General Cancer Center is a pioneer in diagnostic nanotechnology,
as well as genetically targeted cancer therapies. The center’s focus on
fundamental discovery and its rapid integration into clinical care has led to
clinical trials that have set new standards in the treatment of multiple cancers,
including lung cancer, breast cancer and melanoma. The Cancer Center is also
a pioneer in outcomes research and improving quality of life through supportive
care programs.
Known for providing customized, innovative treatments and compassionate
care to both adults and children, the Cancer Center comprises more than 37
treatment programs within 29 fully integrated, multidisciplinary disease centers
and a vast array of support and educational services. Its network of affiliations
extends throughout New England and the southeastern United States.
Building upon this successful track record, the Mass General Cancer Center
aims to change the paradigm of cancer treatment: to diagnose and treat cancers
early, at a stage where patients are curable through surgery or radiation,
combined with genetically-targeted therapy and immunotherapy. The Cancer
Center is ideally positioned to shape new standards of care in oncology and
share these new approaches with medical institutions throughout the world.

Matching Gift Challenges
DOUBLE YOUR IMPACT
Make a gift to support one of the following challenge grants and your donation
will be matched dollar for dollar. Twice the gift means twice the impact!
Head and Neck Cancer Challenge Grant
Make a gift to support head and neck cancer
research and an anonymous donor will match
your gift up to $100,000. Drs. Lori Wirth
and Henning Willers are working to improve
the effectiveness of standard radiation and
chemotherapy in squamous cell carcinoma
of the head and neck. By homing in on the
Hsp90 protein and other biological targets, the
researchers hope to identify new therapies that
will make the cancer more sensitive to chemoradiation and improve cure rates. They are
also working to establish mechanisms that will accurately predict which patients
are most likely to benefit from these new therapies. To learn more, please
contact Carrie Powers in the MGH Development Office at (617) 643-9678 or
[email protected].
Anal Cancer Research Challenge
Donate today to support anal cancer research
and an anonymous donor will match your gift
up to $25,000. Drs. Ted Hong and Eunice
Kwak are conducting research to better
understand the early signs of anal cancer in
order to help raise awareness and educate
primary care providers. This work will help
more patients receive an accurate diagnosis
at an earlier stage, when treatments are
more likely to be effective. Additionally, Drs.
Hong and Kwak are working to identify molecular abnormalities in anal
cancer cells that could serve as potential targets for new therapies.
34
Be a Part of Art: Illuminations Program Anniversary Challenge
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the
Illuminations Program, an anonymous
donor will match all donations up
to $10,000 by the end of the 2016.
Illuminations is a rotating art exhibit housed
in the Mass General Cancer Center and
many of its affiliate locations that brings
enrichment and inspiration to our patients,
families and staff members. Your donation
will help enhance arts programming at the
Cancer Center and sustain a steady stream
of engaging, innovative and diverse artwork
from the local community to our waiting
room walls.
Catherine Pappas and Family
Pediatric Oncology Challenge
Mrs. Catherine Pappas, a 2008
honoree of the one hundred,
maintained a deep compassion for
pediatric cancer patients and their
families. In her memory, her family
has generously committed to helping
establish the first ever endowment
fund to support a child life specialist in
perpetuity, and will match all gifts up
to $1.25 million through 2017. Donate to the Catherine Pappas and Family
Pediatric Oncology Challenge today to ensure children with cancer have the
special care they need and deserve.
TO LEARN MORE about the Anal Cancer Research Challenge, the
