They are free standing replacement teeth, meaning they are not supported by other teeth. The most common implants are called rootform implants. Rootform implants are made of titanium and are shaped or formed like the root of a tooth. They can be surgically implanted in the jaw bone to replace the root of the missing tooth, providing an anchor for your new tooth/teeth. Bridges are also a great way to replace missing teeth. A bridge, as the name implies, bridges the gap between two or more teeth. Bridges are not free standing. They are supported by the teeth on either side of the space. For a conventional bridge, the teeth on either side of the space to be filled must be reshaped. These reshaped teeth hold crowns which support the bridge. There is a definite advantage to dental implants over bridges in that the implants are freestanding and do not need support from the adjacent teeth. If the teeth on either side of the space don’t need to be reshaped for crowns, then it is better to not touch those teeth and use Unique Wall FX Whether you want to brighten the powder room or dramatically change the atmosphere of your great room... However, if the teeth adjacent to the space have large fillings in them and it looks like they will need crowns in the near future, then it could be cost effective to do the bridge. In terms of cost, the implants are more expensive initially. However, there is a good chance the implants won’t have to be replaced, and the bridge most likely will have to be replaced. So, in the long run, the implants are likely going to be less expensive. The bridge can be completed in two weeks without surgery, as opposed to the implants which can take 4-12 months to complete and require surgery. In the end, it’s up to you and your dentist to decide if the implant or bridge is better for you. MATTHEW RUMORA Fair Debt Collection The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act is a Federal Law that was enacted in 1996. The reason for the law was the finding by the United States Congress of abundant evidence that debt collectors were using abusive, deceptive and unfair debt collections practices. A debt collector is any business which uses the mails or any other means of interstate commerce for the principal purpose of collecting debts. The law prescribes numerous restrictions on the activities of debt collectors. One restriction deals with communication with the debtor. The law prevents a debt collector from contacting a consumer at any unusual time or place, or at a time or place known to be inconvenient to the consumer. The law further does not allow communication with the debtor before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m. Also, the debt collector is barred from contacting the debtor at his or her place of employment, if the employer prohibits the debtor from receiving such communication. Further, a debt collector may not engage in conduct which results in harassment or abuse of any person in connec tion with the collection of a debt. One example of this would be the use or threat of violence or other criminal means to harm the person, reputation, or property of a person. Other prohibited activity includes repeated telephone calls to a person or engaging a person in telephone conversations repeatedly with intent to annoy, abuse or harass the person. The use of obscene or profane language is also prohibited. Moreover, a debt collector may not use false or misleading representations such as a threat to take some action that cannot be legally taken, or a false representation that he or she is an attorney. There are many more specific legal prohibitions beyond the scope of this article that apply to debt collectors under this federal statute. Matthew R. It might be interesting to examine this remarkable wine in closer detail. Any seasoned vintner will quickly attest to the fact that Pinot Noir is the problem child of the wine-growing world. The Pinot Noir grape is the mainstay of the fabled Bordeaux region of France and responsible for some to the finest red wine ever produced. However, the Pinot Noir grape is, to say the least, difficult to grow. Many vintners have attempted to produce this wine in various wine producing regions throughout the world, only to be rewarded with a broken heart and a seriously compromised bank account. Much of the problem is because the grape is highly sensitive to climate, soil conditions, and requires an experienced vintner that understands the grape’s temperamental nature. The Pinot Noir grape is thin-skinned, even fragile and requires constant attention. It is difficult to press and needs as much attention in the winery as it requires in the vineyard. So why bother to attempt to produce red wine from such a difficult grape? Anyone who has enjoyed a truly great Pinot Noir will be able to answer this question with little difficulty. Great Pinot Noir is as light and fragile as the grape it is coaxed from. Delicate and fruity with low tannins and underlying notes of raspberry and violets, this wine should be pared with foods of equal demeanor. The very best Pinot Noir can be herbaceous and overwhelming to the senses and should not be matched with overly spicy or robust dishes. It would be a shame to miss all the delicate and subtle qualities of a good Pinot due to the wrong paring. Save the spicy ribs for a more robust red. Pinot Noir is successfully produced in France (of course), California, Australia, and New Zealand, among other countries and regions. When shopping for a good Pinot Noir, as any good wine, seek the advice of an experienced wine expert or trusted merchant. Hopefully you will enjoy this delightful wine, which the French refer to as the “Queen of Reds”, and understand that many people have made a great effort to bring this remarkable wine to your table. A condominium is individual ownership of a single unit in a multi-unit building or complex of buildings. As an owner, you have full title to your individual unit plus a share in the grounds, recreational facilities and other common properties in the complex. The Declaration: Also called the master deed; declaration of restrictions; covenants, conditions and restrictions; the declaration is the most important document of all. It sets forth the sponsor’s intention in creating the condominium as well as the details of the process. It covers such things as voting rights, property description, general common elements, the percentage of elements each unit owns and the operation of the association. This is a legal document, written according to state laws and filed in the land records. Rules and Regulations: It is common for the condo board to publish rules and regulations separately from the bylaws, and in greater detail. These deal with matters such as noise, pets, parking, personal contact, etc. Condominium Fee: This fee is the amount you pay each month to enable the association to meet the expenses of operating the condominium. Usually the amount depends on your fractional ownership of the common elements. In a well-run operation, special assessments are rarely necessary. But they may be required when there is not enough cash in the association’s reserve accounts to meet an emergency. Board of Directors: Typically, a board of directors is elected by the members of the association to set policy; enforce provisions of the declaration, bylaws and rules; and conduct the Bylaws: Bylaws cover in detail things such as association’s business affairs. Usually the purchase price is lower than for a conventional home of the same size. There is less exterior maintenance (this is the responsibility of the association), often affordable recreational facilities are available, and if business travel or vacations take you away for extended periods of time, condo living offers peace of mind and security. Planting earlier than May 20, approximately, is for thrill seekers only -- we often have frosts well into May. Certain plants, such as impatiens, vinca, tomatoes and basil will wilt from merely a cold night, even without the presence of frost. We realize it's hard to ignore the urge to plant when you walk into our garden center and see all those beautiful plants! So, if you simply can't resist the urge to plant early and the inevitable frost advisories are issued, be prepared to cover your new plants with either sheets, table cloths or plastic to protect them. Be sure to remove the coverings mid-morning of the next day to prevent them from smothering. (Also, be prepared to face your neighbors as they fall off their porches from laughter!) FEEDING We carry many good quality fertilizers for annuals. Bi- or tri-weekly applications of Miracle Gro Bloom Booster ® will increase blooms dramatically. It is a high quality water soluble fertilizer that is formulated with high phosphate to achieve great results. Application at recommended rates, beginning two weeks after planting, provides noticeable results quickly. That’s the day we’re going to have a great big party, “The Last Hurrah,” as it were, celebrating the many memories we’ve shared with our friends and supporters. Amanda and I are very proud of all the thought provoking exhibitions we’ve mounted and the evocative artists we’ve represented. Although the brick and mortar aspect of what we are doing will come to an end, that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to continue to contribute to a vibrant art scene in Detroit. But because we have a family now (our second child plans to arrive in July), we have decided to focus our energies on my commission portrait career, expanding my national presence. My goal is to become one of the top 10-20 contemporary American portraitists over the next five years; it’s time for me to devote myself fully to the noble work for which I was put on earth. number of amazing individuals over the years. Along the way I’ve learned some important lessons about what goes into running a serious, viable art gallery in today’s changing economy. I am proud to have done so with enthusiasm and integrity. I plan to continue sharing insights, information and ideas in DANG and in my monthly “Pointe of Art” column and as host of “Inside Art” on WMTV-5 in Grosse Pointe. The Maniscalco Gallery of Fine Art - Online, which has become an important resource for artists, students and collectors, will continue to evolve. One of my goals is to publish several writing and video projects currently in development. And, of course, I plan to continue as host of ART BEAT, if we receive the necessary underwriting for a third season. I am very proud to have been a part of what the Detroit arts community has been able to accomplish in these past eight years. But there is still much work to be done. The community will continue to depend on the visionaries and workhorses who have begun to give Detroit artists a presence as pioneers in the national scene. Slowly we have made progress toward moving the tremendous Detroit underground art scene into view for all to enjoy. To accomplish this we will be setting up a dual residency between Detroit and Charleston, South Carolina, where I will continue to serve the loyal patrons I have been honored to work with in Detroit as well as build on the growing demand for my portraits and fine art in the south. Amanda and I will also be able to focus on creating and mar(To be continued.) Look for Part 2 of Robert Maniscalco’s Pointe of Art in the June issue of keting our own artworks. Naturally, I have very mixed feelings about closing the Maniscalco Gallery. I’d like to think we’ve made an important contribution to the cultural life of our community. We have been privileged to enjoy the appreciation and support of a The Pointer. Maniscalco Gallery, 17728 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe, MI 48230- (313) 886-2993.
