Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church
Saint Mary Roman Catholic Church 1000 North Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro NC 27530-3141 919-734-5033 Rev. Patrick Keane, Pastor Deacon Webster James January 26, 2014—Third Sunday in Ordinary Time DIVISION It is a situation that plays itself out in more and less significant ways: Christians divided. A CYO basketball game between two neighboring parishes. Parents of the young players scream insults and threats at one another and assert their "superiority." A Protestant and a Catholic church sit on adjoining properties. Each is vigilant about having parking violators removed from its own "private" parking lot. An old pastor retires but continues to reside at the parish. A new pastor arrives and quickly finds his faith "community" choosing sides against him. Saint Paul addresses similar disagreements in the early church at Corinth. He encourages the church there to make up their differences and to be united again in their belief and practice. Today's first reading from Isaiah speaks of a people weighed down by the yoke of sin and darkness. Certainly the bickering and differences among us can be classified as such. The Gospel tells of the beginning ministry of Jesus. The Light has come, encouraging us to "repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” EUCHARISTIC LITURGY Weekend Saturday Vigil 5:00PM English 7:00PM Spanish Sunday 10:00 AM English 1:00 PM Spanish Sábado ~ 5:00 PM En Inglés Sábado ~ 7:00 PM En Español Domingo ~ 10:00 AM En Inglés Domingo ~ 1:00 PM En Español Weekdays 9:00 AM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday lunes, martes, jueves, Viernes 7:00 PM jueves en Español No Mass on Wednesday No hay Misa los miércoles Holy Days 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM No Vigil Masses Adoración al Santisimo 9:00 AM y 7:00 PM First Friday Adoration begins after morning Mass and ends with Benediction at 7:00 PM. The 2014 Bishop’s Annual Appeal funds 30 ministries in the areas of charity, evangelization and worship. Jesus taught us to go out and spread the Good News. The BAA funds all or portions of programs and ministries that attempt to evangelize across Eastern North Carolina. 100 years ago, there were less than 25,000 Catholics in the entire state, today we continue to grow and number nearly 500,000 in Eastern North Carolina alone. In addition to providing grants to assist new missions from forming in the more rural areas of the Diocese, funds are also crucial to the tens of thousands in faith formation programs in each of our parishes as well as the 31 Diocesan schools and early childhood centers attended by nearly 9,000 young men and women. BAA funding also supports Catholic Radio and Hispanic Catholic Radio as well as the NC Catholic magazine to each registered parishioner. It also helps fund retreat centers and Marriage classes. Overall, the BAA will provide over $6 million in the upcoming year to help those in physical and spiritual need. You are invited to learn more through the parish, in today’s bulletin insert or online at BAA.DiocesOfRaleigh.org. Thank you for your participation. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The prayers surrounding baptism often speak of being "clothed in Christ," and clothes are an important consideration. In ancient times, adults were probably baptized without any clothes at all, and old texts survive asking people to leave fancy garb and jewelry behind as they enter the font. Baptism was typically in a private place, the community waited elsewhere, and the casting off of clothing was hardly a public moment, nor was it embarrassing in ancient cultures where privacy was largely unknown. Nonetheless, what was left behind on one side of the font was replaced on the other as a white robe was wrapped around the newly baptized. It was a robe of honor, a dazzling sign of a new beginning for a society that valued clothing as a sign of personal identity. For the newly baptized, a whole week in white garments was the rule, through the second Sunday of Easter, called "Sunday in Albis," because of all the folks wearing their baptismal robes. --Rev. Furthermore, in the seven years after her apparitions, approximately 8 million Aztecs converted to Catholicism, leaving behind a culture of death that practiced human sacrifice, including infant sacrifice. We invoke the intercession of Our Lady to end the injustices of abortion, euthanasia and the neglect of people’s basic human needs. I can not help but remember the famous phrase of the late Cardinal Joseph L. Bernardin. Referring to the church’s moral teaching, he pointed out that our respect for life must include all life; it has to be a “seamless garment.” We cannot profess to be pro-life and in favor of the death penalty at the same time. I am not referring here to personal opinions, but to church teaching. This is part of who we are as Catholics. As we look at the teachings in the light of our present day reality that includes millions of Catholic immigrants, we cannot allow the media and the politicians to hijack the truth of our Catholic teachings. Every human life comes from God, is sacred and is to be respected. The image of God that we reflect is not dictated by color or language or economics. Our basic human dignity lies in the fact that we are all children of God and any type of discrimination is therefore a sin. The human person always has priority over structures and material goods; in fact, these systems should be at the service of the human person and not vice versa. Day after day, families are being separated as people seek honest work to support their loved ones. Violence against immigrants has increased and very often goes unreported for fear of being deported (consequently, real crime statistics are unknown). Legislatures try to introduce draconian measures that in no way address the overall reality. Millions of our own Catholic people are suffering under the guise of Christ the immigrant and even many more millions of our own Catholic people do not recognize them. We are faced with Lazarus and the rich man once again. The great sin of the rich man was that of omission, what he failed to do for Lazarus. It was not that he insulted him, kicked, punched or beat him. He simply did not care to recognize his needs. As we pray for life, we pray for all life; as we seek respect for life, we must respect all life. Isn’t it interesting that this month, that starts off with Respect Life Sunday, also coincides with the month in which we celebrate Hispanic heritage? It’s ironic that the patroness we invoke to respect life appeared in Mexico, where many of our immigrants come from. Could it be that we are being invited to actively reach out in love to our immigrant brothers and sisters as we also pray for them, respect them and seek justice for them? Respect Life Sunday takes place in October as does the celebration of Hispanic Heritage, but with our concentration on the March for Life we wanted to keep in our thoughts that Respect Life is not just about abortion but about respect for all life. We must remember the threat to our elderly, those with mental impairments, those on death row, immigrants, etc. To fully embrace Respect Life it must include ALL Life.
