agreements sold as ‘car finance loans’
WHEN it comes to financing
the purchase of a car, many
people simply look for the
lowest rate on offer and believe it to be the best option.
Headline rates may attract
the most attention, but the
devil is very much in the detail. Many ‘car finance loans’
offered by garages and some
banks are actually hire purchase agreements.
The main difference
between using a personal
loan and a hire purchase
agreement to buy a car is that
with a personal loan you
borrow money, pay for your
car, and own it immediately.
With a hire purchase agreement, you don’t own the car
until you make the final repayment. This means you
cannot sell the car if you run
into problems making your
repayments.
If the motor dealer is arranging the hire purchase
agreement, the motor dealer
acts as an agent for a finance
company and earns commission to arrange the finance
for you. In this case, the
motor dealer is acting as a
credit intermediary and
must be authorised to act on
behalf of the finance company.
When you use a hire purchase agreement to buy a car,
the motor dealer sells the car
to the finance company. The
finance company then rents
the car to you for an agreed
period of time in return for a
set monthly repayment over a
number of years.

additional fees and charges
which you may incur as part
of a hire purchase agreement.
This would include a documentation fee (for setting up
the agreement) and completion fee (a fee charged to end
the agreement and pass ownership to the car purchaser).
If you run into difficulty in
meeting the terms of the hire
purchase agreement, you
may be charged a penalty fee
for missed repayments, a rescheduling fee (if you need to
change the terms of the
agreement) and a higher rate
of interest may be charged on
any repayments which you
missed.
The conditions of some
hire purchase agreements
result in monthly payments
not being evenly spread out
and you may pay less in the
earlier months of the agreement. This can make your
monthly repayments appear
more
affordable.
However, you may have to
pay a large final payment
(known as a balloon payment) at the end of the term,
a payment you may not have
budgeted to meet. It can be a
real sting in the tail for
some. Thankfully, a car loan
from your local credit union
is much more straight forward. CEO Pat Shanahan,

you own the car immediately. You agree a repayment
schedule with us. If you run
into difficulty, you can talk
to us to see if you can come
to an agreement on the repayment terms.
“Should you be in the
happy position of being able
to repay the loan early, you
may do so without any penalty charges.”
Having arranged finance

The stylish Kuga commands attention

OFFER me any car in the
world and I would turn it
down in favour of a 4X4 or
SUV, so when the opportunity
presented itself to test drive
the Ford Kuga, I jumped at
the chance.
“There’s no key - you just
put your foot on the clutch and
press the button,” says Liam
Herlihy, sales director with
Cavanaghs of Charleville after
we slide into the driver and
passenger seat of the mediumsized, magnetic grey-coloured
SUV parked in the yard of the
main Ford dealer located on
the Cork to Limerick road.
Handing me a small fob, he
offers some brief instructions,
points out switches for the
lights, wipers and radio, and
then I’m on my own.
Moving from the modest,
and confined, surroundings of
a 1.1 litre Peugeot 206 to the detailed and roomy interior of
the 2 litre Kuga Titanium diesel
on this balmy Monday
morning is like swapping
mince for prime sirloin steak.
The first things that strike me
are the smoothness of the gear
changes, the cool comfort of
the air conditioning system
and the lofty driving perch
from which I am navigating the
N20.
Switching up through the
gears is utterly seamless –
eliminating that hair-raising,
and often embarrassing,
screeching noise when you ac-

Stylish, inside and out: Aine found the interior of the Ford Kuga to
be spacious and comfortable, while its sleek design also wows
cidently move into fifth instead of third. It’s lightning fast
when it comes to accelerating.
The steering is another
pleasant surprise - the leatherwrapped wheel has extra grip
in places enhancing the
driver's comfort when driving.
With eyes firmly fixed on
the road, I haven’t had an opportunity to explore the features and mod-cons staring up
at me from the dash. The plan
is to park first and then explore. At a glance though,
everything looks clean and
functional and you don’t need
to be a tech whizz to manage
the radio.
Back to the parking. As
someone who prides herself as
a self-sufficient woman when
it comes to parking – parallel in
particular– the prospect of
manoeuvring this machine
into a compact space near the
Leader office presents a formidable challenge. As I near
the city however, I begin to
think it's one I’m not so sure
I’m up for, especially with
wheels to the value of €30,000
that don’t belong to me.
My options are twofold head for my usual car park
which is accessed by a narrow
lane, with restricted space, or
circle the Leader block in the
hope that a bus-size space becomes available.
After opting for the second
choice initially and driving
around the block three times
with no luck, I muster the
courage to go in under the
archway, and down the narrow
laneway where space is tighter
than Paul Galvin’s skinny
jeans.
Surprisingly - and thank-
fully - the parking is a pleasure.
Reversing sensors and electric
folding mirrors have me as
snug as a bug in no time at all.
With a quick click of the fob,
I’m off to the office.
At 4pm, it’s time to take the
Kuga out the country roads to
Kilmallock for a few photos in
front of the 13th century Collegiate Church.
The sound system ,with a
CD player and at least six
speakers, is controllable from
the steering wheel. It shows off
its full potential in Ballyneety
when the dial lands on the
Radio Kerry frequency where
The Boss himself, Bruce
Springsteen, is belting out
Human Touch.
Parked up in Kilmallock, it’s
my first real opportunity to inspect the Kuga’s exterior. The
outside styling of the silhou-
ette is smart and sleek while
silver roof rails give a somewhat rugged SUV look.
According to Hugh Sheehy,
the marketing manager of
Cavanaghs of Charleville, the
first quarter 2016 sales for the
Ford Kuga in Ireland were 1,368
units - up from 269 in 2015.
That’s over a 400% growth!
“This was due in large part
to a highly successful relaunch of the Kuga Titanium+
which was given a hugely increased specification,” he explains.

PURCHASING a new car
with a low C02 emission
rating, as well as getting
value for money, is a key
factor for many buyers.
Almost eight out of 10
cars registered here so
far this year have an A
Band rating which means
Irish motorists have become very clued in to the
environmental message.
It's a message that is
working as a huge 96.6
per cent of new cars sold
in 2016 are within the low
A and B tax bands, with
C02 emissions of not over
140g/km. There's actually little difference
between A1 (1-80g), A2
(81-100g), A3 (101-110g)
and A4 (111-120g) ratings,
with a rise of just ten
euros a time from A1 to
A4 bands. Band B covers
emissions from 121140g/km.
The big move to diesel
over the last 10 years
means seven in every 10
cars on our roads are now
diesel-powered.
However, petrol sales
are making a small comeback to the Irish market
as car manufacturers improve the efficiency of
their petrol engines,
mostly in the compact
segments. Some car companies are now suggesting that between 1015 per cent or so of their
range will be petrol for
the next while as a
growing number of motorists realise that they
don't do the mileage necessary to warrant the
extra expense of buying a
diesel car, especially if
they live in urban or suburban areas.
I expect diesel to remain king for some time
yet, even with the growth
of petrol-electric hybrid
powertrains. So far 1,470
such hybrids have found
homes here this year. Car
companies offering hy-

months of this year,
mostly used for city commutes.
Many companies now
provide
an
electric
charger
on
their
premises so their staff
can charge their own
electric cars during work
hours.

THE fact that new car
registrations year to
date are up by 26 per
cent to 93,240 on the
same period last year
(73,970) augurs well for
the industry forecast of
150,000 new car sales
for the whole of 2016.
Stats show that five
out of the 33 car brands in
Ireland accounted for
half of the sales in the
first four months of this
year with the biggest
players being Toyota, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Ford
and Nissan followed by
Skoda, Renault, Opel, Kia
Hyundai Tucson has sold over 4,800 units so far this year
and Audi in that order.
The Hyundai Tucson
leads by a country mile
with 4,817 units sold
ahead of nearest rival the
VW Golf on 3,324; Ford
Focus with 3,111; Skoda
Octavia 3,022; and Nissan
Qashqai with 2,953. After
that come the Ford Fiesta
with 2,483; Toyota Co-
rolla on 2,465; Toyota
Yaris 2,343; VW Passat
saloon has sold 2,070 and
Toyota Auris 1,925.
The vast majority of
2016 car sales (73,381) are
in Tax Band A followed by
16,649 in Band B. There's
a good jump to just 2,263
units sold in Band C while
Band D sales totalled 518.
Just five sales were in
Band G of 225+ with a
penal annual C02 tax of
€2,350.Passenger
car
sales saw 25,383 units in
the small C1 segment;
24,322 in the Jeep/SUV
Standard segment, and
15,840 in the Mini
grouping. The hatchback
remains the most popular body style followed
by MPV, then saloons,
Jeeps and estates. At the
lower end of sales were
sports coupes and convertibles.
Diesel remains the engine of choice with
65,564 units sold while
petrol car sales came in at
25,789. Petrol electric
cars registered totalled
1,470 units while pure
electrics were 273.
Grey remains the
colour of choice with
18,626 cars sold ahead of
black at 17,640, followed
by
silver/aluminium,
white/ivory, red/maroon
and blue.
New car sales in Limerick this year come in at
3,492 which is a 3.75 per
cent increase on 2015.
Since its introduction, the two registration
plate system has produced two very strong
sales peaks in the first
and third quarter of the
year and with the second
registration
period
starting on 1st July, it's
expected that new car
sales will continue to rise
for the remainder of this
year,
reaching
that
150,000 sales target.

THE annual survey has named
the Honda CR-V the most reliable 4x4/SUV up to three years
old; with zero reported breakdowns, average annual repair
costs of less than €15 and an
overall reliability score of
98.5% over a 12-month period.
Based on feedback from
more than 49,000 owners reporting on some 58,000 cars
over a 12-month period, a
number of factors are considered to give each vehicle
tested an overall reliability
score.
The survey is carried out
online, open to both Which?
Members and the general
public.
This latest survey result
further underlines Honda's

The S90 is the latest
model to be built on
Volvo’s all-new Scalable
Product
Architecture
(SPA) platform and benefit
from
Volvo’s
ground-breaking Drive-E
powertrains. Like the
XC90 before it, It features
the new face of Volvo, including the T-shaped
LED headlights that
make them instantly recognisable.
Both models will initially be available with a
choice of two 2.0-litre,
four-cylinder diesel engines – the fuel-efficient
D4 and the powerful and
refined D5 PowerPulse –
and in two trim levels,
Momentum and Inscription.
The front-wheel-drive
190 hp D4 comes with an
eight-speed automatic
gearbox, and offers combined fuel consumption
of 64.2 mpg and CO2
emissions of just 116
g/km in the S90.
The 235 hp D5 utilises
an innovative technology
called PowerPulse to
boost responsiveness.
This uses compressed
air, which is stored in a
tank in the engine bay
and refilled automatically, to spool up the turbo
at low revs. This helps to
overcome turbo lag,
which is the short delay
in the power delivery you
experience in traditional
turbocharged engines.
To harness the engine’s
power, the D5 PowerPulse comes with allwheel drive. An eightspeed automatic gearbox
is also standard.

equipped. As standard,

Pilot Assist, Volvo’s innovative
semiautonomous drive feature, is standard on every
S90. It automatically
keeps you at a set speed
or distance from the
vehicle in front, braking
and accelerating with the
flow of traffic, and gives
gentle steering inputs to
keep the car within lane
markings at motorway
speeds up to 130kph. Unlike previous versions of
the system, it no longer
needs to follow another
car. Pilot Assist is another step towards fully
autonomous driving.
The latest version of
City Safety is also fitted to
every S90.
This includes automatic
emergency
braking with pedestrian
and cyclist detection,
and the world-first application of large-animal
detection.
This feature helps to
avoid or limit the severity
of collisions with large
animals such as deer or
horses both at night and
during the day.
Moving up to Inscription adds Nappa soft
leather
upholstery,
powered front seats, a
12.3” active TFT driver’s
information display (Momentum cars get an 8”
version), 18” diamondcut/silver alloy wheels.
Additional
premium
touches include walnut
interior inlays, rear footwell and side step illumination, and chrome
exterior details.
The optional Xenium
package is available
across the range and adds
a powered tilt and slide
glass sunroof, a parking
camera system with 360o
surround view, and Park
Assist Pilot, which includes automatic parallel
and 90o parking and
Blind spot information
system which includes
cross traffic alert.
Apple CarPlay is another option and allows
you to access certain
functions of your Apple
device and CarPlay-optimised apps directly via
the car’s touch screen,
voice control system or
the buttons on the
steering wheel. Also
available is the exceptional

Wilkins premium sound
system, which offers no
