A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss!
…wenn man das Yearbook 2015 durchblä ert und
mit den aktuellen News auf der Homepage ergänzt,
wird erst sichtbar, wie viele Dinge zusätzlich zum
Unterricht an der GIBS sta gefunden haben. Es ist
beeindruckend: Besuche von Veranstaltungen aller
Art, Sprachreisen von St. Petersburg bis Minneapolis,
Teilnahme an sportlichen We kämpfen, an Sprachwe bewerben und Olympiaden in vielen Fächern,
Kunst- und Musikprojekte, Theater- und Musicalaufführungen, poli sche Diskussionen, Besuche von
Botscha erin Alexa Wesner und dem Botscha er
Ghazi Jomaa aus Tunesien, Koopera onen mit der
Uni Graz, der TU Graz & Google und Teilnahme an sozialen Projekten unter dem neuen Namen gibscare.
Ein großes Thank you gebührt den GIBS Lehrer/
innen, ohne deren Engagement dies alles nicht
möglich wäre. Unterricht bedeutet eben nicht nur
„Credits Sammeln“, sondern heißt auch, Schüler/
innen Vielfalt anzubieten, sie kri sch und verantwortungsbewusst zu machen und auch ein wenig
„glücklich“ zu machen.
Zwei einschneidende Ereignisse im Jahr 2014/15
möchte ich ganz besonders hervorheben:

standardisierte Reifeprüfung“

Die NRP wurde heuer das erste Mal in Österreich
flächendeckend durchgeführt. Alle Schüler/innen der
8. Klassen mussten eine VWA schreiben und präseneren, zentral erstellte Klausuren absolvieren und
sich einer kommissionellen, mündlichen Prüfung unter dem Vorsitz von LSI Mag. Gerhard Sihorsch stellen.
Die Themenkörbe der Fächer und die Fragestellungen
bei den Prüfungen spiegelten sehr gut das Leitbild
der GIBS wider: Sprachenvielfalt auf höchstem Niveau
beweisen, Wissen in den Naturwissenscha en und
Geisteswissenscha en anwenden und evaluieren
können, kritisches Hinterfragen von Wissen und
beeindruckende Präsenta on der Antworten in englischer Sprache. Das Ergebnis war bemerkenswert:
Von 69 Kandida nnen haben 68 die RP bestanden,
davon 35 mit ausgezeichnetem Erfolg und 24 mit
gutem Erfolg. Wir gratulieren unseren Maturan nnen
und Maturanten ganz herzlich zu dieser fulminanten
Leistung!

Qualifying for the world @gibs: The
Interna onal Baccalaureate Diploma
Programme
In keeping with our policy of learning for life and
providing access to interna onal educa on opportuni es, I am proud to announce that it will soon be
possible for GIBS students to take the Interna onal
Baccalaureate school-leaving examina on. School
development, quality control and innova on have
always been guiding principles at GIBS. A rolling stone
gathers no moss! Our applica on to become an IB
World School was accepted in April 2015 and we plan
to introduce our first IB class in school year 2016/17.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme is made up of six subject groups and the core
elements, which are Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the
Extended Essay (comparable to the Austrian “Vorwissenscha liche Arbeit”) and Crea vity, Ac on, Service
(CAS). (See http://www.ibo.org/en/programmes/
diploma-programme/ for further details). A standardized exam, rated anonymously by external assessors,
the IB is rou ne in private schools all over the world.
GIBS will be the first IB school in Styria, although
schools in other provinces already offer the IB or are
planning to do so in the near future.
There are two main advantages to the IB. Firstly,
home students have the op on of acquiring an interna onally recognized qualifica on in addi on to
the Austrian “Reifeprüfung”. Secondly, the IB enables
interna onal students resident in Styria to obtain a
school-leaving qualifica on. Students who enter the
Austrian school system late, for example, those who
join GIBS at the age of 15 or 16, are generally not in
a posi on to take the new standardized competenceoriented school-leaving exam, as they cannot be
expected, in so short a me, to a ain the necessary
level of competence in the German language that
would be required.
The IB authoriza on process takes up to two years
and entails fulfilling various requirements pertaining
to factors such as teacher training, the curriculum,
organiza on, and the acquisi on of equipment for
science laboratories, specialized literature and text
books. The payment of examina on fees is another
aspect to be taken into considera on. GIBS must also
be evaluated as an IB World School by an IB official.

im Sommersemester 2014 durchgeführt (Projekt
Physics/Art – CERN, Moodle im Englischunterricht,
Geschichte und Sozialkunde in Form von Spielen,
Neues aus der Welt der Informa k).

Englisch: Mini-VWA als Ersatz für die letzte Schularbeit in der 7. Klasse, Vorgabe durch die BetreuerInnen
des VWA-Elec ves, Handout und Einschränkung der
Themen auf „Biographies“. Erarbeitung eines „Assessment Grid“ analog zum offiziellen Beurteilungsbogen
der Vorwissenscha lichen Arbeit.
Deutsch: Kulturpor olio (year 6&7)
Es handelt sich um einen Arbeits- und Lernprozess
über mehrere Monate, dessen Fortschri dokumenert und reflek ert wird. Das Por olio ersetzt in der
7. Klasse eine Schularbeit.

In the summer of 2014, the first GIBS Summer
School was held and for three weeks during the summer holidays, the peacocks from Schloß Eggenberg
had an addi onal incen ve to visit our schoolyard, as
they could sing along to the tune of the ABC song and
do cartwheels to the Hokey Pokey, while grabbing a
bite of our delicious cream cheese bagels.

When we first thought about forming GIBSCARE in
September, it was nothing more than a vague concept. Our colleagues’ sugges ons and enthusias c
support have helped us to turn our thoughts into
reality. In the last few months, GIBSCARE has become
an ac ve and produc ve working group involving
students, teachers and community members.
72 Stunden ohne Kompromiss
Students of 5B took part in this charity event and
collected food dona ons for poor people in Graz. In
addi on to that, they also helped to renovate the
storage room for these dona ons. The result of these
three days of hard work: 71 boxes with an es mated
value of € 4000!

The company Innocent offered to donate 20 cent
to Caritas for every woolly hat they receive for their

This year’s CENTROPA exhibi on tried to illustrate
Jewish life in Central and Eastern Europe in the 20th
century. This unique project tries to encourage students to engage with the personal stories and fates.

Year 4 students organized a fundraising stand at
the GIBS Christmas party. They collected money for
two housing facili es for women, both run by the
VinziWerke. Parents, teachers and students donated
€ 562.20.

As they do every year, GIBS students took part in
this Caritas charity event to raise money for a good
cause: the more kilometers the kids reeled, the more
money their sponsors donated. With this event GIBS
students collected roughly € 1500.

Haus der Barmherzigkeit
Sozialschmarotzer
Just before Christmas, 8C visited a foster home
in St. Leonhard. They spent an en re day talking to
the residents, reading stories to them and singing
Christmas songs with them.
In this workshop (held by Young Caritas), Year 6
students discovered how easily you can get trapped
in poverty. They were surprised to find out how many
people are actually at risk of poverty - even in Graz.

Handball Marathon
A team of enthusias c teachers par cipated in this
charity event. Including the star ng fee, the team
contributed to the total dona on amount of € 13,033.

Talent for life
A group of ambi ous GIBS students (Lana Blagojevic, Lea Blagojevic, Larissa Kocher, Jakob Petzl, Ca
Wasserfaller, Sophie Russegger, Hanna Russegger,
Lukas Stracke and Moritz Bogensperger) came up
with an extraordinary fundraising campaign. They
used their musical talents to raise money for a good
cause and performed in parishes in and around Graz
- in their leisure me! The group decided to support
various Caritas projects (e.g. water for life) with the
€ 4500 they collected.

Absolventenclub der Graz Interna onal Bilingual School
Im Idealfall also eine Win-Win Situa on für alle
Beteiligten. Geht es doch vor allem darum, Kontakt
zu den ehemaligen KlassenkollegInnen und zur Schule
zu halten, Informa onen austauschen und Know-How
gezielt durch Mentoring weiterzugeben. Die ak ven
GIBS-Alumni sind Mul plikatoren, Imageträger nach
Außen, die auf ihre eigene Art individuell die Schule
vertreten. Und wer ist glaubha er als Ehemalige?
Die klassische Aufgabe von GIBS Alumni ist, die
Beziehungspflege zu den „Ehemaligen“ auf eine professionelle Ebene zu stellen. Diese Möglichkeiten, ein
funk onierendes und a rak ves Alumni-Netzwerk
aufzubauen, sind vielfäl g. Für das Alumni-Management – Au au, Entwicklung und Evaluierung des
Clubs – war es daher sehr hilfreich, sich Impulse aus
den Strategien etablierter Alumni-Clubs zu holen.
Wich g ist hier langfris g die Einbindung der AlumniArbeit in das Selbstverständnis der Schule und in
Zielsetzungen der Kommunika on mit Dri en. Auch
die Schule selbst profi ert aus der Kontaktpflege
ihrer Alumni. Wir Alumni bringen Informa onen und
Erfahrungen ein, ini ieren im Idealfall auch Projekte in
unserem Berufsumfeld (Prak ka im eigenen Betrieb,
Berufstage etc.).

Im Zuge der neuen Reifeprüfung haben heuer erstmals alle Kandidat/innen eine sogenannte VwA (Vorwissenscha liche Arbeit) verfasst und präsen ert.
Dazu wählten sie am Beginn der 7. Klasse ein Thema
und einen Betreuer/eine Betreuerin. Anschließend
formulierten sie eine fokussierte Fragestellung und
reichten das Thema zur Genehmigung ein. Bis zum
Ende des Wintersemesters der 8. Klasse entstand
dann eine etwa 20 Seiten lange schri liche Arbeit,
in der diese Fragestellung mit geeigneten Methoden
(Recherche, Beobachtung, Analyse, ...) und nach bes mmten formalen Kriterien beantwortet wurde. Um
wissenscha liche Methoden kennenzulernen und die
formalen Rahmenbedingungen zu üben, wurden die
Schüler/innen durch den VwA-Kurs in der 7. Klasse
vobereitet, während in der 8. Klasse eine Schreib-
VWA

werksta sehr gerne angenommen wurde und der
Mentor/die Mentorin ihre Kandidat/innen bis zur
Fer gstellung der Arbeit begleitete.
Die Präsenta on der VWA mit der anschließenden
Diskussion der Arbeit ergab im März 2015 die erste
Note im Reifeprüfungszeugnis.
Durch die freie Wahl des Themas, das nicht mehr
zwingend an ein Unterrichts- oder Maturafach gebunden ist, ergibt sich eine ungeheuer spannende Vielfalt
an VwA Themen. Sie spiegelt das breitgefächerte
Interesse unserer Schüler/innen wider. Die Themen
werden über das ganze Yearbook verteilt in den blauen Balken mit den Fotos der Autoren und Autorinnen
präsen ert. Alle 69 eingereichten Arbeiten zeigen
inhaltliche und sprachliche Kompetenz auf hohem

ACE – A ernoon Care and Educa on @ GIBS
For the crea ve minds, Ms. Ke emann and Ms.
Brown offer challenging drama games and ac vi es,
while Ms. Canizares trains those lovely voices in Choir
– this year the fruit of their labors was an outstanding
performance of the musical Mary Poppins.
Whether kids have “nothing to do” (although there
is ALWAYS SOMETHING to do!) or are in despair because of a birthday present that they forgot to buy
– Ms. Gallacher is there to help out with ideas and
know-how for cra s projects or even has ready-togo gi s tucked between the colored paper, scented
candles and shiny beads in our Cra s supply locker.
Our ever-growing group of children has had a busy year, baking
Christmas cookies, playing games
and crea ng gi s for Mothers’ Day,
Easter and other special events, such
as birthdays. Although the majority
of our ACE kids are students from
year 1 and 2, we do have older
students as well. Our year 3 and 4
students enjoy the fact that they can
get support with their French homework when Mdme. Radl and Mdme.
Rieger are around. Some year 4 boys
also love challenging Mdme. Radl to
a round of “Schnapsen” (and I think
that she has yet to be beaten at this card game!).
The German department, represented by Ms.
Kniechtl, Ms. Kögeler and Mr. Scheucher, are always
ready to answer tricky grammar ques ons, prac ce
for tests and support our DAF students – very o en
on a one-to-one basis. Spanish homework becomes
“fácil” with Sra. Ri er, Sra. Montero and Sra. Psilinakis
and our Math experts, Ms. Begander and Mr. Wetzlmair, have also helped many confused heads and
faces light up again. Mul -talented as they are, Ms.
Psilinakis and Ms. Rathofer offer lessons in Christmas
cookie and gingerbread baking as well!
If you’re ge ng hungry now, there is Mr. Fröhlich,
who loves to create delicious, fresh smoothies together with the students. Mr. Lassnig, Mr. Stummer
and Mr. Trofaier are always ready for a table tennis
or a soccer challenge – and I must say that towards
the end of the school year they seem to have a much
harder me winning those matches! ;-) In addi on to
table tennis and soccer, the gym is ours for games and
fun with Ms. Seiner or other sporty teachers every
day in period 10.

Last but certainly not least, there
is Ms. Greimel, who makes kids smile
not only by ensuring that everyone
gets enough food on their plates,
but also because she always has a
friendly ear and some good advice
for anyone in need of it. There are
always a lot of things to do in ACE
– and, most importantly, it’s always
a lot of fun, as you can see in the

Wenn man von einer Mittelmeerinsel wie ich
kommt, ist es die Sonne und das Meer, das man am
meisten vermisst. Ich habe aber einen guten Ersatz
gefunden, das ist meine Arbeit an der GIBS. Die funkelnden Augen von den Sprachanfängern, die sagen
„ich verstehe, was sie sagt!“, oder die Dialoge auf
Spanisch mit den älteren Schülerinnen, die erkennen
lassen, wieviel sie gelernt haben, die sind für mich
wie Sonnenstrahlen im Winter. Trotz der vielen Jahre
komme ich noch sehr gerne jeden Tag in die GIBS und
genieße die kurzen Gespräche mit den Schülern. Sie
sind für mich eine echte Freude.

Russisch als meine

Oktober 2012 bin ich
als Native Assistent
für Russisch an der GIBS tä g. Als Na ve Assistent
kann ich die SchülerInnen beim Lernen der russischen
Sprache vielsei g unterstützen und ihnen auch die
Kultur vermi eln.
An der GIBS gefällt mir sehr gut, dass viel Wert
auf die individuelle Betreuung der SchülerInnen
gelegt wird. Speziell für mu ersprachliche SchülerInnen ist es eine einzigar ge Möglichkeit, sich mit
ihrer Mu ersprache intensiver auseinanderzusetzen
und sie weiter zu lernen. Dank einer guten Planung
funk oniert das an der GIBS sehr gut. Bis bald im

schon das zweite Jahr als
Fremdsprachenassisten n
für Russisch an der GIBS.
Ich glaube das Lernen an
dieser Schule macht viel
Spaß. Das sieht man an
der guten S mmung der
Schüler und an den Resultaten. Ich weiß, dass meine
Sprache schwer zu erlernen ist. Umso mehr bin ich
überrascht, wenn ich sehe, mit welcher Mo va on
viele Schüler sie lernen. Und das, obwohl Russisch
für sie nur die dri e Fremdsprache ist. Das ist sehr
beeindruckend! Ich wünschte, ich hä e an so einer
Schule lernen können. Ich freue mich deshalb schon
wieder auf den Herbst und auf das nächste Schuljahr!

School Representa ve
It has all gone by so quickly. There we were, freshfaced and eager back in September, a ending the
2-day teachers’ conference before the official start
of the school year, trying desperately to remember
the names of our colleagues and soon-to-be pupils.
Fast forward fran cally through ten months of classrooms, trips, exams, correc ons, music, video, plays,
presenta ons, laughter and tears, and here we are in
the middle of June with only a handful of weeks le
before our first year at GIBS comes to an end.
Trying to document the highs and lows (rest assured, the majority of our experiences were definitely
posi ve) here would be a Sisyphean task and so, to
cut a long story short, we had a fantas c year! We
had never thought that we would have been accepted
and integrated into daily school life by the faculty, staff
and pupils alike so quickly and warmly. It truly was a
pleasure to come into work every single morning and
for that we say thank you to all of you.
Dear fellow students,
I had a great year being your school representa ve
and I would like to thank you for that. I would also
like to thank my team, the student council. You were
great! I really enjoyed working with you and I think
we did some really cool things this year. Star ng
with the exchange-students-ques on- me to the
podium discussions, we had some great ideas. We
started up our Facebook page, which hopefully will
be used by following school representa ves as well.
All of the class rep mee ngs we had were always nice
and I think the communica on between school rep
and students worked quite well. There were a lot of
projects that we had actually planned for this year
and a lot of ideas that will probably go unfinished
because some of us, me included, didn´t come up
with enough mo va on to see them through. But,
I s ll think we managed this year quite well. I hope
you enjoyed it and I wish you the greatest summer
break. I´ll see you again next year.

ECDL @ GIBS – an ongoing
success-story
GIBS has been offering voluntary ECDL exams
(European Computer Drivers License) as an official
ECDL test center for several years. The standardized
syllabus has been implemented in our teaching plans
to give students the chance to be well prepared and
instructed before they take the exams. One year and
seven exams later, we are proud to announce that this
year about 30 students of 5abc finally completed the
ECDL. This is a great achievement, as it will help them
in future job applica ons and in their academic years.

European Day Of Languages 2014 - From Me 2 U
Every year on September 26 we celebrate the
European Day of Languages. At GIBS we have an interac ve project for this special day. During the first
two periods Year 8 students prepare and organize
short English lessons of 15 minutes each for Year 1
students, 15 work sta ons in all. Not only do they plan
and teach the lessons, they also take over the en re
organiza on and mekeeping and emcee the opening
and closing ceremonies. A er the two periods of
prepara on Year 8 students pick up Year 1 students
from their classrooms and the fun begins.
This the opening ceremony started off by Madeleine and Laura yelling The Banana Song and the Moose
song at the top of her voice while encouraging 150
students to join in. Everybody loved it. A er that the
students split up into their groups and there was an
hour of fun English lessons. Some danced, some sang,
some played, some drew but everyone was speaking
English. To finish off everybody gathered to dance
and sing with Toni and Mara. Year 8 students enjoyed
jumping and dancing around just as much as Year

IZMIR 2015 – European Youth Parliament
When we all le for Vienna on the 18th of April at
6am, I knew exactly what to expect. We had previously won the regionals as well as the na onal selec on
event and were en tled to go to an Interna onal
Event of our choice. More than 30 countries would
send their “winners” as delegates to Izmir (Turkey).
Our small group consisted of Chris an Gruber, Nora
Schmiedbauer, Fabian Krutzler, Madeleine Panholzer
and Alexei Williams and two other students from
other schools. We were to spend 10 days tackling
current poli cal problems with complete strangers
in İzmir, the third most populous city in Turkey. I was
full of excitement and I, like all the others, was looking
forward to the next one and a half weeks. When we
arrived we were taken to a beau ful seaside resort
where we checked in and went to bed. The following
day the teambuilding started. In my case, I was in a
commi ee with 14 other people. It was exactly as
awkward as it sounds, but a er first day you have
made friends all over Europe. A er the first couple of
days of ge ng to know each other the work began.
My commi ee worked on the topic of “virtual currencies” while other groups worked on topics such as the
“Ukraine crisis”, the “TTIP”, and “Euro-scep cism”.
The three days of work were fun and frui ul as well
as informa ve. On the 6th day we were moved to a
5-star hotel in İzmir where we could prepare for the
two days of “General Assembly” we s ll had ahead of
us. General Assembly is a parliament-style debate on

Even if you aren’t too interested in poli cs it is defini vely worth a shot. You get to travel, make friends,
and experience different cultures. I would also recommend EYP if you are a food fana c, as there is usually
an evening where there is food from all par cipa ng
countries to eat. As you can see, there are so many
reasons to join EYP. Luckily our teachers support and
encourage us, the students, to par cipate. I would
wholeheartedly recommend joining EYP even if it is
just for the food.

Thinking Interna onal – Youth Congress for Europe
Twenty years ago, Austria joined the European Union. The Organisa on for Student Representa on in
Styria (Landesschülervertretung) therefore organised
an event in Graz where around 700 students from all
over Styria came to listen to important EU-poli cians,
high-ranking members of the Representa on of Employees (Arbeiterkammer) and representa ves from
other companies concerned with interna onal affairs.
While giving an overview of what advantages the
European Union has brought for Austria in the last 20
years, there were also two members of the European
Parliament from the FPÖ and the SPÖ talking about
their future ideas for Europe’s domes c and foreign
affairs. There were lots of different posi ons presented and, with all the different opinions coming from
the students’ side, this led to interes ng discussions.
All in all, it was a me well spent!

Euroscola 2015
We, a group of mo vated students from 7abc and
8a had the pleasure to go on a trip to Strasbourg and
spend a day at the European Parliament. We got an
insight into how the European Parliament works and
even had the chance to talk to MEPs.
In order to get to Strasbourg, we went on an 11hour busride on the evening of Wednesday, March
11. We arrived at the youth hostel in Strasbourg the
following morning, where we had some me to have
breakfast and recover from the long bus trip. A erwards Ms. Pfistermüller and Ms. Blumrich showed
us the most important sights of Strasbourg, such as
the half- mbered buildings of La Pe te France, the
Gutenberg statue and the cathedral. We even did a
boat ride on the Ill through Strasbourg’s old part of
the city. In the evening we had some free- me and
explored the city.
On Friday, March 13, we went to the European Parliament to take part in the EUROSCOLA project with
600 students from the other EU member countries.
Each school had to present their country, and Max
Knasar, Marie-Theres Auer, Johannes Solhdju and Leni
Hanetseder did a great job at introducing our school
to the other students in the plenary hall. Then we all
took part in a very interes ng ques ons-and-answersround with two EU poli cians. A er lunch, we were
put into smaller groups or commi ees to discuss and
find solu ons to current problems concerning the
EU. Each group speaker presented their findings and
we voted for or against the groups’ sugges ons. The
results of our votes were depicted on big screens in
the Parliament’s plenary hall.
Even during our lunch break there was something
for us to do. We took part in the “Eurogame” – a
game for which we had to get together in groups of
four, each person being from another country, and
answer several ques ons in lots of different languages. Congratula ons to Elias Zapusek, who went to
the finals and won the “Eurogame Finals”, answering
ques ons in front of a crowd of 600 students. A er
this exci ng but also very exhaus ng day, we shared
our experiences and enjoyed dinner together at a
tradi onal restaurant in Strasbourg.
We le Strasbourg on Saturday a er breakfast. On
our way home, we stopped at the Bavaria Film Studios
in Munich. A very mo vated guide gave us a tour and
we got an insight into how movies are produced.
Marie-Theres Auer even played in a scene of “Sturm
der Liebe” and Johannes tried his luck at presen ng
the daily weather forecast.
We enjoyed taking part in this event very much
and found it very interes ng to exchange opinions
and ideas with so many other students and even a
few members of the European Parliament. Thank
you, Ms. Blumrich and Ms. Pfistermüller, for organizing this amazing trip and going to Strasbourg with
us! Furthermore I want to thank our busdriver Mr.
Oberreiter, who made the very long busrides as
pleasant as possible for us. Unfortunately there was
an accident where William Jansen hurt himself. We
are very sorry for him and wish him all the best. Get
well soon William!

Am 16. und 17. April fand in der Wirtscha skammer in Wien der Bundeswe bewerb mit dem klingenden Namen „Sprachmania“ sta . Voller Energie
machten sich Sophie Eisner, als Landessiegerin in
Französisch und Nina Reitbauer, als Landessiegerin
in Spanisch auf den Weg nach Wien. Sophie Eisner
und Nina Reitbauer überzeugten in den Videopräsenta onen und jeweiligen Diskussionsrunde klar und
qualifizierten sich somit für die Finalrunde, welche
im vollen Saal der Wirtscha skammer sta and und
in der es darum ging, mit einem „na vespeaker“ ein
Gespräch zu führen und auch sein schauspielerisches
Können zu zeigen. Sophie Eisner erlangte mit ihrer
Vorstellung den zweiten Platz in Französisch und Nina
Reitbauer sicherte sich bravorös und wortgewandt
den ersten Platz in Spanisch österreichweit.

Botscha sbesuch und Schulpartnerscha zwischen der GIBS
Graz und dem Lycée Idéal de Nabeul/Tunesien
Im Rahmen des langjährigen Projekts „Rencontres
Interculturelles“ zwischen der GIBS Graz und dem
Lycée IDEAL in Nabeul/Tunesien besuchte der tunesische Botscha er S.E.Herr Ghazi Jomaa bei seinem
Kurzbesuch in der steirischen Landeshauptstaadt
auch unsere Schule und sprach nach der Begrüßung
durch Frau Direktorin Imelda Görög mit tunesienkundigen SchülerInnen, die sich auch in einer vorwissenscha lichen Arbeit mit Themen wie dem Demokrasierungsprozess des Landes, Islam und Islamismus,
Radikalisierungshintergründe auseinandersetzen.
Herr Botschafter Ghazi Jomaa erkundigte sich
über die seit 2009 bestehende enge Zusammenarbeit beider Schulen und die gemeinsamen Projekte,
die in französischer Arbeitssprache seither realisiert
wurden, zuletzt 2014 „Nature tout simple-ment“
unter der inhaltlichen Leitung von Manfred Singer.
Die Zusammenarbeit wird über die Jahre als ist sehr
fruchtbar, nachhal g und bereichernd für Schüle-

rInnen, Eltern und LehrerInnen erlebt, da es immer
um Respekt und Reflexion des eigenen Standpunktes
im Miteinander geht.
Während der Projekte leben die SchülerInnen in
tunesischen/grazer Familien, sammeln Informa onen
und Erfahrungen (Medina, Souk, Handwerk, Kunst,
vorweihnachtliches Graz, Oper, Wienbesuch) führen
Gespräche mit Menschen vor Ort und absolvieren
Kurzprak ka z. B. in einer Waisenkrippe (Kinderrechte
in Tunesien) und einem Restaurant (Tunesische
Küche). Im Kunst –und Naturprojekt erlebten die Jugendlichen in der gemeinsamen krea ven Gestaltung
die Umwelt des Anderen kennen.
Für 2015 ist das gemeinsame Thema „Corps et
Bien- être“ in Vorbereitung.

Electricity out of the Sea
GIBS Deba ng Club
The GIBS Deba ng Club is a project organized by
this year’s student representa ves. The idea was to
create a space where anybody could swing by and
share their opinions in a very relaxed environment
with the assurance of not being judged, whether
they agree with the majority or not. Throughout the
year we covered topics such as feminism, veganism,
economy and freedom of speech. We are very glad
that the Deba ng Club has become a place where
everybody can exchange their opinions and agree or
disagree with those of others. Not only is it a great
way to talk about topics that concern us students, but
it can also really help to improve one’s understanding
and tolerance of other people’s beliefs. It has definitely always been a very fun, interes ng and, most
importantly, enriching experience and we really hope
that we can con nue the project next year and even
further into the future.

No One Le Behind
GIBS has joined the No One Le Behind project in
coopera on with TU Graz and will contribute as an
experimental pilot school to this project in the school
year 2015/16.
The ‘No One Le Behind” project, co-funded by
the EU Horizon 2020 Framework Programme, will
allow children to use a non-leisure gaming ‘toolkit’ to
develop digital games on mobile devices – with the
aim of enhancing their abili es across all academic
subjects, as well as their logical reasoning, crea vity
and social skills.
The project tackles key challenges in the educaon sector by using the poten al of digital games
and game-making. The project will unlock inclusive
gaming crea on and experiences in formal learning
situa ons, underpin meaningful learning and support
children to realise their full poten al.
The No One Le Behind project has setup 3 small
scale experimental pilots in Austria, Spain and the United Kingdom reaching over six-hundred pupils from
five different schools, targe ng different problems
that generate risk of exclusion on children.
This pilot targets gender exclusion in teenagers.
Currently, Women are overwhelmingly underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and
mathematic related fields during their university
studies as well as once they enter their professional

In the Maths classes, students could be found calcula ng the area of a leaf, which is no easy task when
one has to take into account all the lobes, serra ons
and teeth, which may be involved.
The con nua on of the project in Cra s took on
the form of an insect hotel. An insect hotel is a small
house-like structure filled with different natural materials that provide insects with nes ng or hiberna ng
space or refuge from wind and rain. Each student
sketched, planned and built their individual insect
hotel, using the 1 -1.5 meters of 10 X 2 cm plywood
they had to work with. For the “furniture” we used
carefully selected bark, pinecones, bricks, pieces of
wood with small holes drilled into them, bamboo
s cks, dried leaves, wood wool, or basically anything
with lots of dark holes or cracks or crevasses for the
insects to crawl into.
The insect hotels and all the other tangible products of our work were displayed on the first floor
near the Year 2 classrooms for everyone to be able to
ohhh and ahhh over the crea ve and beau ful results
of our Tree Project.

to the American dream, which they themselves are
living proof of.
The GIBS community was happy to get a chance
to meet HE Alexa Wesner, the US-ambassador to
Austria. She was welcomed to the school by the inspiring first and second year students, who sang Deep
in the Heart of Texas, Simple Gi s and This Land is
Your Land. Her Excellency was very interested in the
interna onal atmosphere at GIBS. The US-American
teachers and students told Ms. Wesner what they
miss most about the USA and what it feels like to
live in the heart of Europe yet s ll be surrounded by
na ve English speakers.

Year 2 – Exploring Andritz
The visit to Andritz AG begins with a video about
safety at the factory. We get warning vests and give
up our cell phones. In the appren ce workshop we
find out about a number of jobs that are learned and
prac ced here. During the plant tour we see the steps
involved in the manufacture of a “Peltonturbine” and
a paper manufacturing machine. A erwards, we can
learn about technical phenomena - How can a “Peltonturbine” produce electricity? Can a steel beam
be elas c? We tested our abili es to take apart and
put back together various elements as well as our
knowledge of materials and tools. It was a morning
which le a las ng impression on many of us.

for the drivers license.
We learned about all kinds of emergency situa ons and how we, as the first responders, could
possibly help. Various topics, no ma er if “banal”
such as nose bleeding or more “severe” such as
heart a ack treatment were covered in the course.
We were also taught how to do resuscita on.
In fact, we discussed various minor as well as
major emergency events that can happen in daily
life, talked about those topics in theory and did a
lot of prac cal work.

The Magical Forest of Hirschegg
When 1a arrived at Hirschegg, the loca on of their
class trip, they immediately found out that it was a
magical place. There were fairies, unicorns and students who mysteriously went missing. Luckily they
had a video camera with them and thus were able
to capture all the mysterious events that occured.
This footage eventually became a film known by the
tle of „The Magical Forest“. Here you can read what
happens in scene three. If you are curiuos about how
the whole story ends - ask 1a for their Hirschegg film.

Marie: What is this place?
Lena: This is a magical land which is controlled by
a powerful sorcerer named Jayden the Terrible.
Marie: How can we get out?
Anton: The only way out is if you find Jayden’s lair
and destroy the magical crystal and PUUF, you’ll be
back.
All of the class except Jayden, Maxi H, Maxi G, Ferdi. They go upstairs and go through the door. Random
effects.Meet Lena and Anton (Lena in front looking

Lena: Hey, that’s my part!!!!!
Anton: Everything’s your part!

Lena: I’m a fairy and that in the back is a… horse.

The 1960s
Sigrid Eisenberger always wore a dirndl when she
went to the market and she also said that the prices
were much lower. Mr. Kleinhapl lived in Paris, he was
doing his military service, which at that me was 30
months long. He was dra ed into the tank division
and was prepared to fight in the Algerian War. Mrs.
Kainrath was 28 when she moved to London, because her husband Willi wanted to become an actor.
She loved London a lot. All the girls wore mini-skirts
and she cut hers really short. Mrs. Krisper was in the
opera and watched Caesar by Shakespeare. A er
the performance the director of the opera came
on stage and said: “Please do not clap, President
Kennedy was assassinated.” Mary Northco , Anna
Kungl’s grandmother, remembered: “I was living in
Devon, I had rather strict parents, so I didn’t really
do all the “Swing” stuff they started doing in London.
Salcombe stayed behind in the 1950s. I do know that
there were a lot of gangs around in England. On one
hand there were the rockers, they had big motorbikes
and wore leather jackets and all of that. Then there
were the Teds. They wore more Edwardian gear ( ght
jackets) and they used to meet up on bank holidays
on beaches like Brighton. There were some huge gang
fights some mes.” Ingeborg Kokol, Julia Kopsch’ granny remembered Elvis Presley, the famous musician,
actor and singer, Peter Krasu, the Rockn’n’Roll star
and the famous boy group, The Rolling Stones, her big
love. Olena Lyuta’s grandparents lived in the Ukraine
during the 1960s and reported that Ukrainian music
and literature was forbidden by the Russians. If you
wanted to christen your child, you had to do it really
carefully and secretly, at night, at the priest’s home.
“At that me we didn’t know about oranges, a really
exo c fruit for us.” If you wanted to buy coffee, you
had to go to Moscow or Leningrad. Rebecca Galante’s
grandmother lived in Italy and remembered that 1961
was the most important year, as Italy was 100 years
old. Sarah Gall’s grandparents lived in Zagreb and the
surrounding villages and they had a gramophone that
worked without electricity. O en they got informa on
and news from newspapers that friends brought from
bigger ci es and they were a big sensa on, being
read for the following two months. Elias’ grandfather
drove up the Großglockner with his motorbike. Paul
Kozak’s grandfather was no hippie, as he lived in the
Austrian countryside where hardly any hippies were
to be found.

Scaredy Cat
As almost everyone (except people with either a
deep-rooted dislike of animals or a deadly allergy) will
confirm, having a pet can be quite pleasant. You have
someone to cuddle when you feel lonely or upset, you
are given the feeling that you are really needed, and
you may even become the object of pure loyalty and
devo on. But there are also certain responsibili es
that come with a li le animal friend: for example,
taking it to the vet for its check-up. This can prove to
be quite a struggle, a nightmare even. The problem,
however, is usually not the sojourn at the vet’s itself,
but the procedure of taking your pet there. Or, more
precisely, making it get into the travel box.
Now, I have two cats that go by the names of Casanova and Filou. Casanova is, as a rule, completely
relaxed and at ease – and even when he quite obviously is not, for example, when the vet is listening
to his chest with a stethoscope,
he keeps purring relentlessly, like
a small perpetuum mobile, as
if trying to calm himself down.
It’s very easy to get him into the
transport box: all you have to do
is throw in a few cat treats, and
he’ll just pad inside and happily
munch away on them while you
close the hatch. Filou, on the other
hand, is the exact opposite. He is
the most neurotic and anxious
li le creature alive, troubled easily
and by the smallest things; the
mere sound of the cage shu er being opened sets
him on edge, and when you try to put him inside, he
struggles so vehemently it’s as if he has turned into
a beast with ten legs and hundreds of sharp claws,
and neither sweet talk nor cat treats will persuade
him that there is no need for panic.
Eventually the day came for us to take the two cats
to the vet for their rou ne physical. Or at least that’s
what we thought. Filou didn’t really agree. While Casanova was already si ng in his cage, calmly nibbling
at his treats and providing us with a soundtrack of
soothing purring, we (my three brothers, my mother,
and me) were pursuing Filou around the house. He
was racing up and down the stairs, jumping over
tables, slipping through our hands and hiding under
beds. A er more than half an hour of this wild goose
chase we were obviously running late for our appointment, and Filou seemed on the verge of a heart
a ack, pan ng so heavily that I suggested we should

just give up for now, lest he would seriously need a
vet. Since everyone agreed, my mother simply drove
Casanova, who had already grown a bit cranky, having
to sit in that cage for so long, to the vet’s, while I sat
on the sofa with Filou, stroking his head reassuringly
as his sides heaved, un l he finally se led down.
However, the problem had not been solved – it had
only been postponed: cats s ll need to be wormed,
even if they refuse to go to the vet’s. Which is why
my mother brought the wormer for Filou home with
her: a red pill, small, ny even – but s ll an almost
insurmountable problem. How do you make your
fas dious feline swallow a tablet, an unknown object
that neither smells pleasant nor tastes good? There
was no use trying to crush it and mix it into his food,
he would have immediately no ced there was something amiss. And we couldn’t just put it into his mouth;
an act of violence would have been
necessary, and besides, he would
have just spat it out again anyway.
So we knew that he had to accept it willingly. And that’s when I
had a glorious idea: Casanova and
Filou have always been fascinated
with the food we eat, the food on
our dining table, forbidden territory to them. At meal mes, they
always sit next to me and follow
my every movement, their eyes
fixed on the delicacies on my plate,
wai ng for me to weaken and give in to their craving.
It was no different the day a er the disastrous vet
incident. We were having grilled chicken for lunch,
and Filou was staring up at me pleadingly, begging
for a taste of whatever it was that smelt so delicious.
And so I gave him a small bite. And another. And then
I pretended he was going to receive another treat, but
instead slipped him the small pill between my fingers,
and before he even knew what was happening, he
had already swallowed it and was wai ng for the
next piece of chicken. All of that without the slightest
struggle - short and sweet.
Filou got several more bites of chicken a erwards.
Just to make sure he s ll trusted me, in case I would
have to do it the same way again next me. And not
because I felt just a ny bit sorry for chea ng him.
And not because I was won over by his huge, needy
eyes either. Of course not.

Clouds and Watercolours
Extract from a short story
[...] I have got that theory that we are all diverse
people walking the earth. Naturally some resemble
each other, which might either be caused by their
genes, or what I believe, results of spending a lot of
me with each other. This theory of mine is applicable from siblings who are brought up together, over
deeply-rooted friendships to all sorts of roman c
rela onships. Now, as bizarre as it might sound, it
is not really absurd to compare people’s personality
traits to watercolours. Each person is different from
another; nevertheless the more people resemble
each other, the more alike their colours would be.
Now if two people who meet each other had very
appalling colours, the more me they’d spend together and the more they’d learn from each other, the
more their two colours would blend into a mixture.
As we all deal with different people in our lives, we all
have a unique colour and we cannot make out what
exactly our original colour was, as we have already
been influenced too much by others.
The constant mixing of colours might appal us too.
Maybe I don’t want to become a specific colour, even
though the person, the last straw to the change of
colours, was a very likeable one. The nicest people
can ruin us. Possibly we have wrong expecta ons of
what might happen to us when we spend enough
me with them, which colour we might turn into.
The clouds were moving at a steady pace now and
cap vated me. Although they were almost always
there, they constantly changed into new shapes and
colours – quite similar to the watercolours on the desk
in front of me. Did humans also change that rapidly?
I thought about it.
When you keep staring at clouds, without ever
le ng them out of eyesight, you’d think they always
stayed the same, as you wouldn’t realize a change.
If you now let them pass by your window and only
look up once a while, they’d appear being completely
new clouds. It’s quite similar with humans. The Cas
I had met a few months ago had not been the same
Cas I spent the last night with. The Cas I knew and
who had become quite dear to me had le for good,
already a while ago. [...]

That was exactly what had happened that night.
The realiza on that I didn’t like the colour Cas had
made me into. He had felt the same, the night had
been pure awkwardness filled with heavy, yet trivial
silences. I was proud of myself that I had stood up and
le . I really was. Never before had I managed that,
I had just ignored all the delicate embarrassment. I
needed to let go, finally. I didn’t though; I didn’t want
to lose such a lovely person. There weren’t that many
close to me.

Worcester Work Experience Exchange
Lucy Bauer
I loved my me at Kings Hawford
Primary School. The staff were really
friendly and suppor ve and took good
care of me. The students were really
sweet and I got a ached to them right
away. During my stay I met another
student who was working there,
Emilia. On my last day she and I were
supposed to help one of the teachers
with her work but we ended up making tarts and I must say they were extremely good. I
am really glad that I had the chance to go to England
and got the opportunity to meet so many new people
and make new friends.

be almost as many dogs of different breeds as people.
Wan ng to properly experience the

some bets but having had no previous

Book Day and as the King’s St. Albans
School has the tradi on of dressing
up in the costume of one’s favourite
book character, Nanina and I were
asked to join in. Mrs. Stenson, one of
the teachers, kindly lent us two of her
costumes, which enabled us to enter
Pre-Prep as Li le Red Riding Hood and Harry Po er.
We spent a wondrous World Book Day surrounded
by an army of li le Mad Ha ers, Wizards of Oz and
Cinderellas.

During my first week in Worcester
the pre-prep class of King´s St. Albans
School was preparing a li le school
play for their parents. They were
performing The Three Li le Pigs and
Yannis and I got to help them build
their houses for the performance. On
the day of the show all the children
were very excited to get into costume
and perform the play in front of their
parents. It was a lovely show and afterwards the children enjoyed some
home-made piggy cupcakes.
My first weekend in Worcester, my
host family took me to Stra ord to
see a Shakespeare play at the Royal
Shakespeare Company. I was very
excited because I had never seen one
before and was therefore uncertain
about what to expect. The play was a
comedy called „Love‘s Labour’s Lost“.
I have to say that it really exceeded
my expectations as the play was
unexpectedly funny and very entertaining. Even though I have to admit
to not having understood every single
word, I thought it was a really great
experience including very tasty local salted caramel
ice cream during the break.

For several years now, GIBS has been doing a very
special kind of exchange with Kings School, Worcester,
England. A handful of lucky students get to go to
England for two weeks to help out in
primary schools and at the end of the
school year, their English exchange
partners come to Graz. A great way
to get to know the Bri sh way of life!

Cead Mile Failte - 6A’s Trip to Ireland
I never would
have thought that
we were actually going to see a
dolphin outside
of an aquarium. I
was counting on
a boat trip round
the bay, never truly
believing we were
going to witness
the Dingle dolphin,
Fungi, in ac on. He
delivered an ar s c
show as if he knew we were his audience. In the end,
we all had dozens of pictures of a dolphin gliding
gracefully in and out of the water.

The most deligh ul experience was playing rugby
with Mr Stummer, although I hurt my shoulder during the game. The second unforge able experience
was going for a swim in the freezing water of the
Atlan c Ocean. I don’t think I’ve ever touched water
that cold.
Paul Panzi
One thing that really amused me was that our
three-year-old `host brother`, Aaron, enjoyed pulling
our leg. One me he hid Sabine’s make-up brush under her bed. Another me he nicked Lili’s underwear
while we were sleeping and once he secretly took 2
euros from us… A unique moment for me was when
I got to play the guitar and sing in front of everybody.
I was very nervous but in the end I’m glad I managed
to do it.

In Dublin, I think I liked the Guinness Factory
best: it is my favourite `museum` ever. I loved the
huge halls and all the different themes, and the gi
shop, of course… An amusing moment for me was
when the hurling game we decided to watch turned
out to be an under-14s game with li le boys: it was
entertaining but it didn’t seem like a very fast sport!

I really appreciated the way the teachers organized
all the different ac vi es and our spare me. The
visits were interes ng, interac ve and not too long.
And although I really enjoyed almost every single one,
the moments that I remember best were when we
went to a pub, played football or just walked through
the streets listening to Eminem.

I know the weather couldn’t be planned but I’m
glad it was so marvellous: it was a bit like summer
holidays minus 15°. It was great with Hagenauer and
Mr Stummer on the top floor of the Guinness Factory
and at the greyhound racing with Oskar, Cerncic and
Ms Saringer. I really appreciated that the teachers had
so much confidence in us.

The Irish dancing was so much fun and, to my
surprise, not as difficult as it looked. I also loved the
Irish music they were playing and was fascinated by
the fact that they played it all from memory… I am
extremely glad we went to Ireland. I can’t say it o en
enough: it was simply unforge able and other classes
coming up would be lucky to have the opportunity to
go to this fascina ng country.

My Special Place on the Other Side
Do you remember the last me you had the feeling
of pure excitement?
The last me I felt this feeling was when I arrived
at Kansas City airport, where I was awaited by my
exchange student and his family. I didn’t have any
idea what the next two weeks in the US were going
to be like.
I would never have thought of life being so different
in the States than in Europe.
Every morning I would wake up to the smell of
another breathtaking breakfast my hostparents would
prepare for me. A er a high amount of donuts, pancakes, cereals or bacon, we would hop into the car for
a half hour drive to the home of the lacrosse- playing,
unbelievably crea ve and extremely friendly students
of Pembroke Hill School.
In the a ernoons we were allowed to choose what
to do. Some mes we would shop at the Plaza, other
mes we would just hang around at different people’s
places, there was always some place to visit.
US. Walking through the streets of that gigan c city
was an incredible experience. Manha an was filled
with enormous skyscrapers, making a stroll through
5th Ave feel like I was being hugged by these tall and
somewhat legendary buildings. But I got to experience New York’s charm and diversity in Chelsea, a
neighbourhood in southern Manha an, filled with
li le shops and cafes. The High Line, which is my
personal must-see, was a beau ful li le path leading
to Chelsea’s famous Chelsea market, an underground
shopping market and one of my personal favourites
of all that I got to see in this amazing City.
There is a lot to see in New York City and four days
definitely weren’t enough to experience everything
the city has to offer, but a er hearing all these amazing stories I finally got to see for myself how breathtaking this part of our world is. So get out there
and plan a journey to that special place you always
wanted to visit!

The Best Trip Ever
This year we went to New York and Minneapolis
and who would have thought that this trip would be
the best trip of our lives?
On 12th April we had to meet up at 4 o’clock in the
morning to get to the airport. We couldn’t wait un l
we were in the plane on our way to America. Our
flight would depart at 8 o’clock to Amsterdam for a
short stop and then we boarded another plane to
freakin’ America!
Oh my God, we were so close. I could already see
the American soil and couldn’t be more excited to be
landing. A er we finally landed we took our bags and
headed straight to the train that took us to New York.
New York was a li le chao c as it was rush hour and
we s ll had to get our subway ckets. There were so
many people taking the subway and we forgot two
of our people at the sta on… oops? The people in
New York were incredibly nice and helpful. And the
hot dogs were really delicious. The buildings were so
tall especially the new World Trade Center and Times
Square is so fascina ng. But for me the Empire State
Building was the highlight. We went up there at night
and the view was just incredible. For breakfast and
dinner my friend and I ate bagels with cream cheese
for the first three days. On the first day they were
the best thing ever, on the second day they were ok
but on the third day we couldn’t stand even hearing
the words bagels and cream cheese. So note to self:
don’t eat bagels and cream cheese for three days
straight.
On 15th April we flew to Minneapolis. When we
arrived at the airport our friends surprised us with
a huge sign. For 10 minutes everybody greeted each
other and took pictures. Then we went back to their
school so our host-parents could pick us up and
take us back home. At first we were extremely lucky
weather-wise but even when the bad weather hit I
didn’t care because I loved being in Minneapolis. We

went to some museums and even though I’m not a
big fan of museums it was s ll fun because our great
friends from Minneapolis entertained us 24/7. I had
the best me of my life for 7 days in Minneapolis and
I got sadder and sadder everyday that passed. On
the last day there were a lot of tears. Everybody was
devastated that we had to fly back to Austria. We allpromised each other that this wasn’t the last me we
would see each other. And then we le Minneapolis
and caught our plane back to Austria.

An American Student’s Point of View
You guys coming to us was the greatest thing to happen to Minneapolis. It was definitely the highlight
of my year. A er spending a week with you guys in
Graz, it was so great to have you in our town where
we could return the favor.
Seeing you guys at the airport was so heart-warming. A er days and days of talking about you coming
to us, you were actually there. Here in Minneapolis.
Oh my god the fun was about to start. We only had a
week but we all knew it was going to be the greatest
week of all me. I don’t think I could add up all the
mes we laughed together. Somehow we even made
going to two museums fun.
Having you guys leave was heart wrenching. We
couldn’t believe it was happening. I personally was
emo onally distraught. I had grown so a ached to
all of you. You guys had become family. There were a
lot of tears and sorrow on the last day. And watching
you guys go through the gate was the hardest thing
to do. Now we are all determined to see you again.
So please. Come back. Because we are sure that we
will be coming back to Graz.

Interna onal Experience
My host parents have two children, aged fourteen
and sixteen at the me. The older brother is now
already a ending college, while the younger sister
is in her junior year. She is s ll going to the school I
went to during my exchange semester, called Gaston
Day School. My host family was a very ac ve family.
We did lots of sports, especially hiking and running.
Furthermore, my host brother and I played soccer on
the school’s soccer team. On several long weekends,
we went to their grandparents‘ house at High Rock
Lake to go waterskiing, for example. We also went to
the Whitewater Center to go ra ing and rock climbing, went to a Carolina Panthers football game in the
Bank of America Stadium in Charlo e, and a Bobcats
basketball game, now known as Charlo e Hornets. At
the end of January I went to Myrtle Beach, SC, with
friends to go surfing on the Atlan c coast.
In the United States, I learned to be a lot more
flexible in certain situa ons. Many Americans take
a lot of things “easier” than some Austrians do. Trips
and excursions were not planned far in advance,
but mostly the evening before. Furthermore, I had
to make difficult decisions on my own; however, my
host family and iE always supported me if I needed
help. I communicated with my family and friends via
Skype, Facebook or e-mail.
What I missed the most from home were of course
my family and my friends. I did not miss the food, as
many people would think, because there are several
great restaurants over there as well and not only fast
food chains. Every member of my family was really
into sports, so we ate lots of healthy food. Besides
meat and fish, salads, vegetables and fruits were
provided for lunch in school as well.
I personally would certainly go abroad for another
year, for example during my studies at university. I
can only recommend that anyone who has the opportunity to spend a semester or even a year abroad
do it. It is important, however, to keep in mind that
when you return from your stay abroad, you have to
do a lot of work in school in order to keep up with
the rest of your class. It can take up to several weeks
to learn the things that were taught in Austria in the
mean me, especially if you study foreign languages
such as Russian that are hardly taught in America.
Nonetheless, going to a foreign country not only
improves your English skills, but also shapes your
personality and gives you the opportunity to make
new friends from a foreign country.

15 years old, I decided to go to the United States for
six months. I wanted to improve my English skills,
but also make new friends on a different con nent
and find out more about the American culture. I was
ini ally registered at a school in Richmond, Virginia.
However, no suitable host family could be found
there. Therefore, my exchange organiza on “Interna onal Experience” (iE) kept on looking in other
states as well and found a family in Gastonia, North
Carolina. Gastonia is a small city located in the outskirts of Charlo e, the largest city in North Carolina.

Was wäre, wenn es keine Die beste Oma der Welt
Bücher mehr gäbe?
Meine Oma ist in 1400 m Seehöhe in Tirol aufgeDie Welt wäre traurig und trist, wenn es keine Bücher mehr gäbe. Bücher begleiten einen von klein auf.
Sie erwecken Fantasie im Menschen, fordern uns zum
Nachdenken auf, vermi eln Wissen und Erfahrung
und bringen uns zum Weinen und Lachen. Sie können
ein guter Freund, ein Reisebegleiter, ein Lehrer, ein
Erzähler und ein toller Animateur sein. Wie traurig
wären die kleinen Kinder, wenn es all die spannenden
Geschichten und Märchen, die von Menschen über
viele Genera onen in Büchern festgehalten wurden,
nicht da wären. Sie könnten in ihrer Fantasie nicht
mit dem Guten gegen das Böse kämpfen oder davon
träumen, eine Prinzessin oder ein Ri er zu sein. Wie
weit wäre der Fortschri heute, wenn all das Wissen
der Menschheit aus vergangenen Zeiten nicht in
Büchern aufgeschrieben und weitergegeben worden
wäre? Vielleicht würden wir noch wie die Menschen
im Mi elalter leben. So viele schöne Theaterstücke,
Opern, Fernsehfilme, die den Menschen immer
wieder Freude bringen, würde es nicht mehr geben,
wenn sie nicht in Büchern aufgeschrieben worden
wären. Es ist so schön, vor dem Schlafengehen noch
ein tolles Buch zu lesen. Wie langweilig wäre es ohne
das? Würden wir unsere Welt genauso kennen, wenn
Seefahrer und Forscher ihre Berichte nicht in Büchern
weitergegeben hä en? Es könnte sein, dass sich die
Menschen heute noch erzählen lassen würden, die
Welt wäre eine Scheibe. Könnten wir uns auf der
Erde so gut untereinander verständigen und die Sprachen anderer Völker so leicht lernen, wenn es keine
Sprachbücher gäbe? Ich denke nicht. So haben auch
Bücher sehr dazu beigetragen, dass die Menschen
heute weltweit Freundscha en schließen können.
Aber nicht nur das. Es ist möglich geworden, dass
sich die Völker auch wissenscha lich austauschen
können, was für alle Menschen von Bedeutung ist.
Durch Bücher können wir Kinder lernen. Wenn es,
wie früher, nicht für uns alle Bücher gäbe, würden
viele nur eine schlechte Bildung haben und könnten
keinen guten Beruf erlernen.

wachsen, mit 15 Geschwistern und viel Arbeit. Trotzdem erzählt sie gerne von ihren Erlebnissen, egal ob
von den guten oder von den schlechten. Jedes ihrer
sieben Kinder und 16 Enkelkinder genießt die Zeit
bei ihr, denn es gibt auch immer etwas Köstliches zu
essen. Jeder kann von Omas Kochkünsten noch etwas
lernen, doch das will sie nie zugeben, genauswenig
wie wenn man sagt, dass sie am besten von allen
in der ganzen Familie Kartenspielen kann, obwohl
es ebenfalls s mmt. Als echtes Bergbauernkind aus
Pfunds im Oberinntal hat meine Oma immer durch ihr
natürliches Aussehen gepunktet, hat bis heute keine
Schminke getragen und ist schließlich zu meinem Opa
nach Maria Lankowitz gezogen. Meine Oma, Paula
Reinthaler, war und ist immer die Schnellste, die einen Pilz entdeckt, denn obwohl sie beim Fernsehen
eine Brille braucht, hat sie beim Schwammerlsuchen
Adleraugen. Meiner Oma wird einfach nie langweilig,
besonders wenn wir, meine Cousine und ich, bei ihr
sind. Ich frage mich, wie viele Stunden Schule-Spielen
sie schon mitgemacht hat, und nein, die waren nicht
immer leicht, sondern eher anstrengend, wenn zwei
7- und 13-jährige Mädchen einer über 80-jährigen
Frau beizubringen versuchten, auf Englisch von 1 bis
10 zu zählen. Aber unsere Oma war immer fröhlich
und hat immer gelacht und mitgemacht. Auch wenn
wir uns manchmal über sie einfach lus g machen
mussten, wenn ich zum Beispiel vorgesagt habe: „We
are singing“, und sie dann geantwortet hat, „I dua
single?“, war sie nie auch nur ein bisschen böse oder
gekränkt. Mit meiner Oma kann man einfach allen
Spaß der Welt haben, denn sie hat trotz ihrer 85 Jahre
voll schöner, aber auch schlimmer Zeiten immer ihren
Humor beibehalten. Obwohl sie abgeschundene,
schrundige Hände hat, hat sie ein Gesicht mit erstaunlich wenigen Falten, erleuchtet durch zwei fröhliche
Augen, umrandet von welligen, weißen Haaren. Und
obwohl sie bes mmt sehr, sehr viel Last auf ihrem
Rücken zu tragen ha e, hat sie immer noch ihren
aufrechten Gang. Eine ganz besondere Eigenscha
meiner Oma ist auch ihre Großzügigkeit. Sie gibt allen
viel, obwohl sie selber nie viel ha e, aber so ist meine
Oma.

Meine Reise in die Welt der
Bücher
Ich suchte gerade in meinem Bücherregal nach
neuem Lesestoff, als plötzlich die große Märchensammlung wie durch Geisterhand auf den Boden
fiel und vor mir landete. Kaum ha e ich das Buch in
die Hände genommen, landete ich schon auf einer
Waldlichtung und eine merkwürdige S mme hinter
mir sagte: „Solltest du nicht zuhause bleiben, damit
dich die Königin nicht findet?“ Verwirrt drehte ich
mich um und sah ……… Nichts! „Hier unten!“, rief die
S mme. Also senkte ich meinen Blick und sah eine
Reihe von sieben roten Zipfelmützen. Anscheinend
war ich im Märchen von Schneewi chen und den
sieben Zwergen gelandet. Und da ich schwarze Haare
ha e und nicht viel Zeit in der Sonne verbrachte,

hielten sie mich für Schneewi chen. Also versuchte
ich zu erklären: „Das ist ein Irrtum! Ich komme aus
einer ganz anderen Dimension als ihr!“ „Das steht
nicht im Text!“, rief der Zwerg in der letzten Reihe und
wedelte mit ein paar Ze eln herum. Der erste Zwerg
drehte sich um und murmelte: „Was ist nur mit Anna
los?“ „Anna?“, fragte ich verwirrt. „Schneewi chen,
Anna,… wie du willst“, murmelte der dri e Zwerg.
„Das ist ihr Name, wenn sie nicht eine Rolle spielt. Wir
spielen alle nur, wenn der Deckel aufgeht. Ansonsten
leben wir hier alle wie im Paradies“, erklärte der Zwerg
hilfsbereit, der neben dem grummelnden Zwerg
stand. „Allerdings werden wir alle älter und merken
nicht mehr, wenn der Deckel aufgeht“, murmelte der
grummelige Zwerg. „Mensch, Muffie, jetzt sei doch
mal ein bisschen posi ver!“, riefen alle Zwerge im
Chor. Da raschelte es im Gebüsch und ein Wolf kam
aus dem Gebüsch. Er ging Arm in Arm mit einer Ziege,
die der Ziegenmu er aus dem Märchen „Die sieben
Geißlein“ ähnlich sah. „Hey, Miese-Peter, wir haben
Besuch!“, rief der größte Zwerg und deutete mit dem
Kopf in meine Richtung. „Gesta en, Miese- Peter, der
böse Wolf“, sagte er und deutete auf die Ziege, „Und
das ist meine Freundin, die Ziegenmu er.“ Die Ziege
winkte schüchtern. Da begann die Erde plötzlich zu
beben und eine Horde Elfen in dunklen Gewändern
erschien. „Angriff des „Scha enreich“- Buches“, riefen
die Zwerge ängstlich und zückten ihre Steinschleudern. Ehe ich mich versah, war ich von Waffen aller
Art umzingelt. In der Ferne donnerte es. Als wäre das
ein Startsignal gewesen, stürmten Elfen und Zwerge
los. Es war ein fast synchroner Kampf und die Steine
der Zwerge flogen parallel auf die Elfen zu. Ein Elf
schützte sich mit seinem Schild und der Stein prallte
ab, änderte seine Richtung und traf mit voller Wucht
meinen Kopf. Dann wurde alles schwarz.
Als ich wieder zu mir kam, lag ich am Boden und
neben mir lag das Märchenbuch. Ich richtete mich
auf und sah in den Spiegel. Auf meiner S rn war ein
roter Punkt, der den Aufprall des Steines markierte.

Revolu on der Teddybären
Ich saß auf meinem Regal und wartete bis das
Geschä geöffnet wurde. Vielleicht nimmt mich ein
Kind doch mit. Ich dachte an Monsieur Hasehase, meinen Freund, der ha e mir ganz viele Nachrichten auf
seinem PTTG (Plüsch ertelefoniergerät) geschickt,
welche seine Abenteuer mit Simpel, seinem Besitzer,
beschrieben. Ich war so wütend und eifersüch g, als
alle Kinder zu der Playsta on 4, zu den Xbo Ones oder
zum iPhone6 rannten.
Nachdem das Geschä geschlossen worden war,
rief ich alle Teddys zusammen. Ich sprach laut und
voller Wut: ,,Meine Kameraden, wollen wir uns
weiterhin von diesen Technokonsolen rumschubsen
lassen? Wollen wir nicht auch gekauft werden?“
Alle Teddys s mmten mir zu und wir rannten zu den
Konsolen, um sie zu zerstören, doch plötzlich stellten
sich uns ein paar Ac onfiguren in den Weg, die waren
natürlich froh, dass sie in den Videospielen vorkamen.
Ich schrie: ,,Geht zur Seite, ihr wertloses Stück Plas k!“ Doch sie bewegten sich nicht. Dafür sprach ein

Der Elf im Ohr
Als ich heute von zu Hause wegging, warf ich noch
rasch einen Blick in den Spiegel. Ich erschrak, denn auf
meiner Schulter saß ein Wesen, nicht größer als eine
Graffi -Spraydose, mit der ich zu han eren liebte. Das
Wesen war so leicht, dass ich es fast nicht spürte. Es
trug ein grünes Gewand, eine rote Zipfelmütze und
rot-weiß gestrei e Strümpfe. Seine Schuhe waren
spitz und aufgebogen und ha en kleine Glöckchen
vorne dran. Als meine Überraschung verflogen
war, schossen mir mehrere Namen für das Ding auf
meiner Schulter in den Kopf: „Pixie! Nein. Wichtel!
Eher nicht…“ „Ich bin ein Elf, bi eschön. Direkt vom
Nordpol.“ Elf und Nordpol, da klingelte etwas bei
mir. „Weihnachtsmann“, platzte ich heraus. Der Elf
klatschte seine Hände zusammen, die etwas zu groß
waren für den restlichen Körper. „Ganz rich g. Der
Weihnachtsmann schickt mich, um zu sehen, warum
du fast das ganze Jahr unar g bist, aber auf der ar66
„M“ stand, mit italienischem Akzent: „Warum sollten
wir? Damit ihr unsere Heimat, die Konsolen zerstört?“
Ich sagte nichts, sondern rannte auf den Mann zu.
Gerade wollte ich zuschlagen, als ein Elf mit grüner
Kleidung meinen Schlag mit einem Schild abwehrte,
auf dem sich drei goldene Dreiecke zu einem großen
Dreieck formten. Bevor ich reagieren konnte, bekam
ich einen Schlag von einem Affen mit roter Krawa e,
auf der „DK“ stand, und flog zu meinen Kameraden.
Der Kampf war unfair, denn sie ha en Waffen und
Erfahrung in Sachen Kampf, etwas das wir Plüsch ere
nicht besaßen. Doch wir hielten sehr tapfer durch.
Plötzlich hörten wir Schri e.
Alle froren ein. Gerade noch rechtzei g, denn in
der nächsten Sekunde kam der Ladenbesitzer ins Geschä . „Nanu, gab wohl ein Erdbeben“, murmelte er.
Das war Erklärung genug für unseren Posi onswechsel. Gerade kam sein Sohn auch herein und schrie:
„Oh, Papa, genau den Bären will ich!“ Und seither
wohne ich auf dem Nach sch des Juniors. Und darauf
war und bin ich ganz besonders stolz.

Der Elf redete immer schneller und schnau e, als
er fer g war. Ich fand es cool, dass man sogar am
Nordpol von meinen Streichen gehört ha e, bis mir
wieder einfiel, dass es gar keinen Weihnachtsmann
und Co gibt. „Nun sperr mal deine übergroßen Lauscher auf, du ¾-Milchtüte. Regeln haben mich schon
immer einen Dreck interessiert, meine Eltern bringen
die Geschenke und der Weihnachtsmann ist reinste
Kinderkacke! Und du bist nur ein Traum und ich wache gleich auf und sehe, dass ich mich mit den Jungs
in fünf Minuten im Skaterpark treffe.“ Jetzt ha e ich
es diesem Elffuzzi aber gezeigt. Der Elf glotzte mich
an und fing ohne Vorwarnung an zu heulen. „Okay,
okay“, sagte ich und nahm ihn von meiner Schulter,
bevor ich ihn auf einen Tisch setzte: „Ich hab’s nicht
so gemeint. Es tut mir leid.“ Der Elf hörte sofort auf
und es schien, als ob die Heulerei nur Show gewesen
wäre: „Na, geht doch. Du kannst auch ne sein. Aber
wir haben ein ganzes Stück Arbeit vor uns. Zuerst
sagst du alle deine Verabredungen ab.“ Ich ha e
überhaupt keine Lust, meinen Freunden abzusagen,
aber mein Gefühl sagte mir, ein Elf vom Weihnachtsmann bei mir zuhause musste schon wich g sein. Also
tat ich, was der Elf gesagte ha e und war plötzlich
den ganzen Tag über verfügbar. „Jetzt gehen wir auf
den Weihnachtsmarkt“, verkündete der Elf. Natürlich! Der Weihnachtsmarkt. Und danach vielleicht
im Altersheim stricken. Ich nahm mir vor, alles zu
hassen, was der Elf mir zeigte. Bevor wir das Haus
verließen, fragte ich noch: „Werden sich die Leute
nicht wundern, wenn ich mit einem Elf durch die
Stadt laufe?“ „Keine Sorge, ich kann mich unsichtbar
machen“, sagte er und gab mir einen Blick, als hä e
ich vergessen, wie viel 2x2 war. Ich Dummerchen, wie
konnte ich nur vergessen, dass sich die magischen
Elfen des Weihnachtsmannes wegzaubern konnten!
Als ich endlich mit meiner unsichtbaren Begleitung
in einer Straßenbahn Richtung Weihnachtsmarkt saß,
s eg eine ältere Dame ein. Der Elf flüsterte: „Willst
du nicht für sie aufstehen?“ Ich ignorierte ihn einfach
und sah aus dem Fenster. Es schneite. Draußen war
alles weihnachtlich geschmückt. Meine vor kurzem
verstorbene Oma liebte Weihnachten. Sie ha e immer mit mir Kekse gebacken zu dieser Zeit. Ich wollte
gerade aufstehen, als die Frau schon wieder auss eg.
Ich vermisste meine Oma …Fünf Minuten später waren wir am Weihnachtsmarkt. Der Elf zerrte mich in
alle Winkel und seine Begeisterung färbte auch auf
mich ab. Ich sah tolle Glasfiguren, die meine Mu er
geliebt hä e und Vogelhäuser, für die mein Vater
alles gegeben hä e. Plötzlich ha e ich ein schlechtes
dŚĞƚŚŝĐƐŽĨ^ƚĞŵĞůůdŚĞƌĂƉǇ
Gewissen, weil ich meinen Eltern noch nie etwas zu
Weihnachten geschenkt ha e. Also kau e ich eine
Glasfigur für Mama und ein Vogelhaus für Papa. Nach
dem Weihnachtsmarkt spazierte ich durch die Stadt.
An einer Wand saß ein halb erfrorener Be ler. Ich
ha e noch ein wenig Geld übrig, also kau e ich bei
einem Stand einen heißen Punsch und gab ihn dem
Mann. Er drückte zum Dank meine Hand und in mir
s eg ein Gefühl der Wärme auf, was nicht an meiner
Winterjacke lag. Ich ging weiter und kam an einer
gestressten Mu er vorbei, die genervt ihre kleine
Tochter hinter sich her zerrte. Plötzlich ließ die Kleine
ihren Teddy fallen, welchen sie die ganze Zeit fest
umklammert ha e. Sie fing an zu weinen, doch die
Mu er merkte es nicht. Der Elf, der noch immer auf
meiner Schulter saß, zog an meinem Ohr und meinte,
ich solle dem Mädchen den Teddy bringen. Also hob
ich den durchnässten Bären auf und rannte der Kleinen nach. Als ich ihr das Sto ief hinhielt, bekam sie
leuchtende Augen und der unsichtbare Elf flüsterte:
„Frohe Weihnachten!“
Wieder zu Hause, umarmte mich der Elf und sagte:
„Ich hoffe, du hast den Zauber von Weihnachten
endlich verstanden.“ Und mit einem „Puff“ war er
verschwunden, ohne mir Zeit zu geben, mich zu verabschieden. Plötzlich ha e ich den Wunsch, Kekse
zu backen. Vor mein Rapper-T-Shirt band ich eine
Schürze, holte ein Bild meiner Oma, das ich auf den
Tisch stellte, und kramte ein Rezeptbuch hervor. Dann
fing ich an zu singen: „Alle Jahre wieder …“

Unheimliche Gewi ernacht
Die Nacht war schwül und voller Geräusche.
Niemand in der kleinen Stadt am Rande des großen
Waldes konnte gut schlafen. Alle, Menschen wie
Tiere, waren unruhig. Gewitterstimmung. Etwas
Unheilvolles lag in der Lu . In der Ferne grollten Donnerschläge. Der Himmel war voller dunkler, grauer
Wolken. Ich blickte auf zu den Sternen, die schwach
hinter der dicken Wolkendecke glitzerten. Ich spürte
auf einmal, wie ein kalter Lu zug um meine Beine
strei e und mir das Haar zerzauste. Beunruhigt blickte
ich erneut zum Himmel. Ich erstarrte. Eine riesige,
graue Wolke ließ mich alles andere um mich herum
völlig vergessen. Sie war groß. Sie war gewal g. Und
das Schlimmste war, sie war geformt wie eine große
knochige Hand. Die kalten Finger streckten sich über
den Himmel. Das Blut gefror mir in den Adern. Mit
einer einzigen Bewegung wischte sie die anderen
Wolken vom Himmel. Sie gli en über den schwarzen
Nachthimmel, wie ein Rudel hungriger Wölfe auf der
Jagd. Die Sterne waren da. Aber die große Hand war
noch nicht verschwunden. Nein. Sie ha e schon ihr
nächstes Opfer ausgewählt. Ich zi erte wie Espenlaub
und vergrub das Gesicht in meinen schweißnassen
Händen. Es war eine furchtbare Qual für mich, zusehen zu müssen, wie es immer dunkler und dunkler
wurde. Die eisigen Finger der Wolkenhand schlossen
sich um den Mond. Verschlangen ihn in ihrer Dunkelheit. Es war totens ll. Kein Laut war zu hören. Plötzlich
hörte ich einen Schrei. Ich war nicht einmal sicher, ob
er von mir stammte. Alles war kohlrabenschwarz. Und
die Nacht eiskalt. Ich s eß gegen etwas Hartes und
fiel ins feuchte Gras. „Steh auf!“ Panik erfasste mich.
Eine leise S mme wiederholte die Worte: „Steh auf!“
Ich schrie. Ich schrie aus Leibeskrä en. Entsetzlich.
„Steh auf“, hörte ich die S mme erneut sagen, diesmal vernahm ich ein Rascheln direkt neben mir. Ich
presste die Hände auf mein Gesicht. Ich wollte nichts
hören. Ich wollte, dass es vorbei war. Aus. Vorbei mit
den Qualen, die mir diese S mme zufügte. Sie war
so kalt. Sie machte mir Angst. Ich sprang auf, nahm
die Hände von meinen Augen, die ich fest zugepresst
ha e. Auch wenn mein Herz so laut pochte, dass es
gleich zerspringen würde, wiederholte ich die Worte
immer wieder in meinem Kopf. „Ich höre keine S m-

men, ich höre keine S mmen, es wird wieder hell sein,
der Mond wird wieder da sein.“ Ich wiederholte die
Worte so o , bis ich mir sicher war, dass sie s mmten.
Ich ha e es mir bes mmt nur eingebildet. Millimeter
für Millimeter zog ich meine zi ernden Finger von
den Augen. Zuerst sah ich schwarz. Doch dann - ein
heller Streifen am schwarzen Nachthimmel. Eine
Sternschnuppe. Ich war so erleichtert, dass ich alles
andere vergaß und vor mich hin flüsterte: „Egal, ob
Wünsche nun bei Sternschnuppen in Erfüllung gehen,
ich wünsche mir, dass der Mond wieder scheint und
die Sterne wieder funkeln.“ Ich riss meine Finger von
den immer noch halbverdeckten Augen und blickte
in das helle Mondlicht.

Willkommen und Abschiedein bisschen anders
Mein Herz das hat voll gschlagn‘, schnell, da rüber
zu den Pferden. Und weg, so oag drauf wie der eine
der da letztens seine Freundin verteidigt hat, wie irgendein Hawi sie antanzt hat. Und mir wars voll dizzy,
als ob irgendwas die Erde hin und her bewegen würd.
Das Nightlife war am Sart, da hinter dem Berg; Bei
dem Baum da ist voll der Nebel aufges egen, so voll
riesig ist er geworden, da wo auch so das Finstere as
dem Strauch hinter mich voll depa angegangen ist.
Der Mond war bei den clouds und hat ur fer g
gewirkt. Dann hat der Wind voll Gewehr und das hat
bei meinem Ohr dann so komisch gemacht, außerdem
auch meine Friese zerstört. Die Nacht hat mich teilweise echt geschreckt, weils voll spooky war, aber ich
war voll so im „no risk, no fun“ mood. Mein Inneres
das war so ein Feuer, wie letztens im Erdgeschoss 7!:

ziemlich happy, weil du mich geil findest und du es

Die Reise auf den Mond
Es war ein sonniger Sommertag. Meine Familie
und ich saßen auf dem Sofa in unserem Wohnzimmer
und schauten im Fernsehen zu, wie Neil Armstrong
gerade auf den Mond reiste. Als er oben ankam,
zeigten die Kameras das begeisterte Publikum auf
der Erde. Dass das eine tolle Leistung war, wusste ich
natürlich, doch konnte ich mir nicht vorstellen, was
daran so schwer sein sollte.
Auf einmal ha e ich eine geniale Idee, es noch
besser zu machen als Armstrong. Da wir noch viele
Raketen von Silvester daheim ha en, rannte ich in die
Garage, holte mir die größte und lief damit wieder
zurück in das Wohnzimmer, wo mich meine Familie
mit offenem Mund anstarrte. Was ich jetzt tat, werdet
ihr mit nie glauben! Ich sprang mit der Rakete in der
Hand durch den Fernseher direkt in das Publikum.
Nun starrten mich auch diese Menschen sprachlos
an. Das war aber natürlich noch nicht das Highlight!
Nein, ich steckte die Rakete in die Erde und hielt sie
ganz fest in den Händen. Als sie nach ungefähr fünf
Sekunden mit mir in den Himmel zischte, waren die
Leute unten bald nur noch so klein wie Ameisen. Die
Rakete und ich flogen direkt auf den Mond zu. Als ich
neben Armstrong landete, machte er große Augen,
denn ich ha e ja gar keinen Raumanzug an!

Nach ungefähr 24 Stunden ha en wir beide alles
gesehen, die Steinwüste am Mond wurde mir langsam
fad. Also sprang ich einmal ganz hoch in die Lu . Ich
zog meine Füße ein und schon flog ich auf die Erde zurück wie ein Fallschirmspringer, nur ohne Fallschirm.
Bevor ich landete, breitete ich Arme und Beine aus
und schwebte wie eine Fledermaus in Richtung Boden. Als ich heil unten ankam, jubelte das Publikum
noch lauter als zuvor. Da mein Meisterstück ja auch
live im Fernsehen übertragen wurde, war ich noch
am gleichen Tag weltbekannt.
Wenn ihr jetzt glaubt, ich hä e gelogen, lest lieber
gleich weiter, denn das war erst der Anfang meiner
verrückten Erlebnisse.

25. Ich beschloss, den Rest der Flugzeit zu verschlafen
und steckte mir ein Paar Ohropax in meine Ohren.

Ich werde von einem lauten Ra ern geweckt. Das
Flugzeug bebt. Das Licht geht aus. Eine schrille S mme
ertönt durch das Mikrofon, diesmal aber zi ernd und
exal ert: „Bi e bewahren Sie Ruhe! Holen Sie bi e
Ihre Schwimmwesten aus dem...“ Alles s ll.
Dieser Moment, der einem die Lu aus den Lungen
saugt. Dieser Moment, in dem man alles in Zeitlupe
wahrnimmt. Dieser eine Moment, in dem man nur
für sich ist. Nun ist er da. Und ich will in ihm gefangen
sein. Ich will nicht weg. Müde schaue ich zu Sina, die
sich erstarrt an ihren Sessel gefesselt hat. Ich spüre
das Adrenalin durch meine Andern strömen, meine
Finger beben, meinen Atem zi ern. Der Junge mit
dem roten Auto hat sich an seine schreiende Mu er
geklammert. Vor mir holt der Mann seine Schwimmweste unter seinem Sitz hervor. Ich widme einen letzten Blick meiner Freundin. Dann schließe ich meine
Augen und lasse alles an mir vorbeigehen.

Reihe 12 war die letzte, die zwischen Tortellini
und Fischfilet wählen dur e. Ich saß in Reihe 13,
der letzten des vollgestop en Flugzeuges. Schon auf
dem Hinflug hä e ich also ahnen können, dass der
Jahresurlaub zum Albtraum werden würde. Einen
Dreck ahnte ich. Im Gegenteil. Ich war so happy, dass
ich sogar Sekt für meine Freundin und mich bestellte
und harmonietrunkenen Unsinn faselte: „Auf einen
tollen Urlaub!“ „Und darauf, dass wir endlich aus
dieser stinkenden Stadt rauskommen!“, ergänzte
Sina strahlend. Und dann knirschten unsere beiden
Plas kbecher aneinander, was irgendwie erbärmlich
klang. Es dauerte jedoch nicht lange, bis ein paar
Passagiere zu murmeln begannen, wann das Flugzeug
doch endlich starten würde. Dabei war es doch nur
14 Minuten zu spät und ich ha e auch kein Problem
damit, ein wenig später in Barcelona anzukommen.
„Die sollten mal die deutsche Bahn erleben, was?“,
lachte ich zu dem Mann vor mir, in der Hoffnung eine
unterhaltsame Konversa on zu beginnen. Doch der
starrte nur weiterhin unbeeindruckt in seine Zeitung
und ich ließ mich wieder zurück in meinen gelb-blau
gestrei en Sitz fallen. Ich rollte meinen Kopf auf die
linke Seite, an der sich meine Freundin gerade das
neuste H&M- Magazin reinzog (ganz ehrlich, ich
hab noch nie verstanden, warum man sich freiwillig
Werbung ansieht). „Mir ist soo fad!“, motzte ich zu ihr
und imi erte so den kleinen Jungen, mit dem roten
Spielzeugauto rechts von mir. Doch Sina schubste
mich nur genervt weg und murmelte: „Mach doch
irgendwas mit deinem Laptop! Du wirst schon was
finden, das dich amüsiert!“ „Ja, aber ich dachte,
wir haben uns extra diesen wunderbaren Urlaub
geleistet, um von diesem ganzen Computerszeugs
wegzukommen“, antwortete ich. In diesem Moment
ertönte eine schrille S mme, welche den ganzen
Raum zum Schweigen brachte. „Liebe Passagiere,
wir entschuldigen uns vielmals für die Verspätung!
Leider gab es ein paar Probleme beim Start, die jedoch
behoben werden konnten. Wir können den Start nun
fortsetzten. Zuerst möchte ich Sie aber auf die Sicherheitsvorgaben aufmerksam...“ Der Rest verschwand

Er sprach mit dem Herzen in der Hand. (Gabriel García Márquez)
Eines der Highlights im Jahre 2015 ist zweifellos der
Eurovision Song Contest im Mai in Wien. Österreich
ist Veranstalter, weil die Sängerin Conchita Wurst mit
einer beeindruckenden Vorstellung im letzten Jahr
für Österreich den Sieg errungen hat. Viele mögen
denken, dass sie nur auf Grund ihrer Message gewonnen hat, nämlich, dass Homosexuelle, Bisexuelle
und Transsexuelle genauso viele Rechte verdienen
wie Heterosexuelle auch. Was auch immer der Grund
für ihren Sieg gewesen sein mag, es ist erfreulich zu
sehen, dass Europa sich als so tolerant erwiesen hat,
wie es sich auch sonst gern präsen ert.
Doch der Schein trügt. Ist Europa wirklich so tolerant? Noch vor dem Grand Prix haben unter anderem
Armenien, Weißrussland und, natürlich, Russland Pe-

onen unterschrieben, um zu verhindern, dass Frau
Wurst an den Start geht. Das hat mich sehr verstört.
Ich ha e das unbes mmte Gefühl, dass ein großer
Teil der Europäer vor Homosexuellen Angst hat.
Woher kommt diese Furcht? Was ist denn so beängs gend an Conchita? Ihr Äußeres, der Bart? Sie hat
niemandem wehgetan, oder? Hat sie irgendeinen
Menschen seiner Freiheiten beraubt oder diese
eingeschränkt? Wohl ganz im Gegenteil. IHR werden
einige Freiheiten genommen. SIE ist es, die in vielen
Orten Europas diskriminiert wird. SIE war dennoch so
mu g und hat ein Zeichen gegen Hass und Intoleranz
gesetzt.
Die Frage der Freiheiten hat mich nach ihrem Sieg
sehr beschä igt. Weltweit leiden LGBT Menschen
unter einschränkenden Gesetzen und einer intoleranten Gesellscha . Es ist genug. ES REICHT. Ich halte
es für eine Schande, dass hier in Österreich, wo wir
uns so sehr um Toleranz und Gleichberech gung
bemühen, Homosexuelle zum Beispiel noch immer
in der Gesamtwertung den 3. Platz. Herzlichen
Glückwunsch zu dieser großar gen Leistung!

es seit 2010 gibt, gewährt „verpartnerten“ Paaren
nicht nur weniger Rechte und Vorteile als heterosexuellen „verheirateten“ Paaren, sondern sorgt für
eine Art „Rassentrennung“, oder besser, eine „Sexualitätstrennung“.
Heterosexuelle Paare werden gesetzlich in vielen
Punkten gegenüber homosexuellen Paaren bevorzugt. Für „verpartnerte“ homosexuelle Paare gibt
es zum Beispiel keine Hinterbliebenenpension, man
ist als homosexuelles Paar nicht mit der Familie des
Partners/der Partnerin verschwägert, auch werden
ausländische Partnerscha en nach österreichischem
Recht behandelt, Ehen aber nach ausländischem
Recht. Auch künstliche Befruchtung wird nur Hetero-
ǁĂŶŐƐŚĞŝƌĂƚŝŵ/ƐůĂŵ
sexuellen gewährt. Das Adop onsrecht wird mit Ende
dieses Jahres zwar gleichgestellt, trotzdem erfolgt dies
erst 6 Jahre nach der Einführung des Ehe-ähnlichen
Konstrukts der Verpartnerung. (Und ganz nebenbei:
Microso Word erkennt„verheiratet“ als Wort, „verpartnert“ aber nicht.)
Im Februar ha e ich das Privileg, einem EU-Vortrag
beizuwohnen, bei dem einige österreichische Poli ker, die im Europäischen Parlament sitzen, über ihre
Arbeit referiert haben. Später ha en wir alle die
Chance, persönlich mit ihnen zu sprechen. Ich fragte
einen bekannten Poli ker einer noch bekannteren,
rechtsgerichteten Partei, wie er selbst zur gleichgeschlechtlichen Ehe stehe. Er sagte, er sei dagegen,
denn eine gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe habe seines
Erachtens keinen gesellscha lichen Wert.
Keinen gesellscha lichen Wert? Wie bi e? Diese
Aussage ist für mich ebenso lächerlich, wie die Partei
selbst. Welchen gesellscha lichen Wert hat denn eine

Ehe? Liegt es an den Kindern? Viele verheiratete Paare
wollen gar keine Kinder, und viele unverheiratete
Paare haben Kinder. O wird auch das Argument gebraucht, dass homosexuelle Paare keine guten Eltern
wären. Betrachten wir es doch anders! Ich denke,
dass jedes Paar, das sich bereit erklärt, ein Kind zu
adop eren, besser als Eltern geeignet ist, als das Paar,
von dem das Kind stammt. Denn wenn dieses Paar
zum Elternsein bereit gewesen wäre, könnte man
das Kind schließlich nicht adop eren. Viele Studien
belegen zudem, dass es keinen Unterschied macht,
ob man mit einem oder zwei Elternteilen aufwächst,
und ob diese gleichgeschlechtlich sind oder nicht. Es
braucht einfach nur Liebe. Es sind diskriminierende
Aussagen, wie jene dieses Poli kers, unter denen
LGBT-Menschen immer noch und immer wieder zu
leiden haben.
Eine andere, häufige Art der Diskriminierung ist für
mich das Wort „schwul“, wenn es in einem nega ven
Kontext missbraucht wird. Hören Sie sich doch einmal
unter Jugendlichen um! „Oida das Gschä hat scho
zu? Wie schwul isn des?“ „Wir ham morgen Englisch
Schularbeit. Schwuuuul!“.
Ehrlich gesagt sehe ich nicht, was ein geschlossenes
Geschä oder eine Englisch Schularbeit mit Homosexualität zu tun haben. Und trotzdem wird das Wort
„schwul“ immer wieder als etwas Nega ves verwendet.
Würde man das Wort „schwul“ durch, sagen wir mal,
„schwarz“ ersetzen, gäbe es sicher einen Aufschrei.
Rassendiskriminierung ist illegal und Xenophobie
wird gesellscha lich abgelehnt, aber Homophobie
und LGBT Diskriminierung sind gesetzlich fast legal
und bleiben in der Gesellscha fast unerwähnt? Wo
liegt der Unterschied?
O tri die Diskriminierung nicht nur die LGBT
Menschen, sondern auch deren Kinder. Besonders
schlimm ist es in der Volksschule. Deshalb halte ich
es für äußerst sinnvoll, bereits in der Volksschule das
Thema Homosexualität zu behandeln. Ich habe über
das Thema Homosexualität nur von meinen Eltern
erfahren, nicht in der Schule.
Natürlich kann man die Sache auch posi ver sehen.
Jahre lang in den Kerker gesperrt, wenn man homosexuell ist.
Seit 1990 wird Homosexualität von der UN nicht
mehr als psychische Krankheit angesehen, und seit
2003 wird man in den USA nirgends mehr gerichtlich
verurteilt, wenn man homosexuell ist!
Also, seit erst 40 Jahren darf ich in Österreich
meine angeborene sexuelle Orien erung frei leben?
Seit gerade einmal 25 Jahren bin ich nicht psychisch
gestört? Danke, UN. Und seit 12 Jahren bleibt mir in
den USA das Gefängnis erspart? Eine lange Zeit, um
so weit zu kommen, wenn ich das anmerken darf.
Auch die katholische Kirche behauptet, dass Homosexualität unnatürlich wäre. Diese Aussage klingt
für mich aus dem Mund von Priestern, die ihr Leben
freiwillig zölibatär verbringen, gelinde gesagt seltsam
und lächerlich. Was kann mir schon jemand ohne Liebesleben über MEIN Liebesleben sagen? Unnatürlich
sind wohl eher die in den letzten Jahren aufgedeckten
Skandale in katholischen Internaten.
Mir ist klar, dass ich heute nicht die Welt verändern
kann, aber ich möchte die hier Anwesenden ermu gen und auffordern, ein Zeichen gegen Homophobie
zu setzen. Verwendet das Wort „schwul“ nicht nega v, macht keine Witze über Homosexuelle, denn
viele verfallen in Depressionen, die manchmal sogar
zum Selbstmord führen können. Wenn sich jemand
in eurem Bekanntenkreis als homosexuell/bisexuell/
transsexuell outet, macht es der Person nicht schwerer, als es für sie selbst ohnehin schon ist. Und um
alles in der Welt, wenn ihr selbst einmal Kinder habt,
und diese sich vielleicht outen, macht nicht denselben Fehler, wie zu viele andere Eltern in dieser Welt.
Unterstützt eure Kinder. Unterstützt eure Freunde,
Familie, Bekannten. Unterstützt Gleichberech gung,
und sagt nein zu Hass und Intoleranz!
Für alle Zweifler unter euch, lasst mich mit einem
Zitat aus der Bibel enden, 5. Buche Mose, Kapitel 1,
Vers 29: Fürchtet euch nicht.

Le français est sans doute une langue fabuleuse et
un moyen d’apprécier sa juste valeur est de regarder
un film. Après le départ de notre « Monsieur Ciné »
Ma hieu j’ai con nué à organiser des soirées pour
des élèves mo vés avec du pop-corn, des boissons
mais surtout des moments tristes et beaux, rigolos et
touchants partagés ensemble. Plusieurs films comme
„Ode e Toulemondeʺ, „Ensemble, c’est tout” et „Le
fabuleux des n d’Amélie Poulain” nous ont permis de
vivre de tels moments. Le film français est vraiment
quelque chose d’extraordinaire et je suis contente de
rencontrer toujours des amateurs parmi les élèves de
la quatrième à la Terminale. J’ai hâte de con nuer à
entendre la langue et d‘apprécier l’art du film français

5BC - Morges by day & Paris by night
Comme ils étaient charmants !
Ce e année, les élèves de la 5bc ont fait un échange avec le lycée à Morges, en Suisse.
Après s’être rencontré à Graz déjà en mars, le
groupe de français (11 filles et 4 garçons) de la 5bc
est par en échange fin avril pour retrouver le groupe
suisse (12 garçons et 3 filles). On est excité dans la
couche e, on se prépare encore dans le train pour
faire bonne figure aussi en français - et finalement
à l‘arrivée on s’embrasse très fort (trois bises!) Le
temps passé ensemble était magnifique, les correspondants trop charmants, la région autour du Lac
Lemon splendide et le français – c’est déjà un plaisir
de communiquer dans la langue de Voltaire, version
„français fédéral“. Les adieux, ce e fois-ci, étaient plus
durs qu’à Graz, on a commencé à s’apprivoiser!
Mais l’aventure con nue à PARIS. Même si le
temps n’était pas toujours au beau fixe, c’était une
expérience enrichissante au niveau culturel et affec f
et vraiment inoubliable!

Pendant ce e semaine-là nous avons fait beaucoup de choses comme une randonnée à Eze, quelques
visites de musées, une visite de Monaco et nous avons
aussi visité la parfumerie à Grasse.
Cinq fois nous avons eu un cours à l’école de langue
où nous avons beaucoup appris sur la France et nous
avons aussi bien amélioré notre français.
Ce qui m’a par culièrement plu, c’était la ville. Nice
est une ville extrêmement agréable et on peut y faire
tant de choses. La plage et la vieille ville sont un bon
mélange par culièrement pour les jeunes. Habiter
dans une famille française est aussi une expérience
inoubliable.

Nous, les 7abc de Madame Rieger, sommes allés
dans la belle ville de Nice sur la Côte d’Azur. Nous y
avons passé une très bonne semaine et nous avons
beaucoup appris.
Je crois que j’ai beaucoup profité de ce séjour.
J’ai appris plus vite et mieux qu’à l’école à Graz.
Parler avec ma famille m’a beaucoup aidée et j’ai fait

Nous sommes BARDO !
Dans le cadre du cours « Voyage Interculturel » un
groupe d‘étudiants, accompagné par Madame Radl
et Monsieur Mi l, est par pendant les vacances de
Pâques à la découverte de la Tunisie. Pendant notre
séjour j’ai rencontré beaucoup de Tunisiens qui étaient touchés parce que nous sommes venus malgré
toutes les images représentées par les médias après
l’a entat du Bardo. Ce e semaine m’a montré que
je dois toujours croire en l’humanité et qu’il ne faut
pas se laisser influencer par les ac ons de deux individus – même si elles sont très graves – et juger une
na on en ère selon quelques criminels. J’ai apprécié
beaucoup l’art qu’on y trouve partout, la splendeur
des paysages, les visites qu’on a faites mais avant
tout l’ouverture d’esprit des Tunisiens qui nous ont
toujours accueillis à bras ouverts et les échanges
que j’ai eus avec eux. Je pense qu’on a tous rapporté
quelque chose avec nous en Autriche qui n’a pas de
valeur matérielle, mais des souvenirs, des moments
touchants et forts.

Cést déjà devenu une tradi on de par ciper avec
nos classes de 7e français long au Prix des lycéens
autrichiens. Dans le cadre de ce projet, les élèves
lisent non seulement trois livres dáuteurs francophones mais ils ont aussi lóccasion de rencontrer les
auteurs, de discuter et d’argumenter dans un cadre

Lors du jury na onal qui a eu lieu de nouveau à
Graz où Sophie Hofmann- Wellenhof, 7C a présenté la
décision de la Styrie, le livre « 1,2,3 … Foulard » a été
élu livre gagnant par les classes par cipantes.

KARAMBOLAGE – Concours du court métrage ARTE
Les élèves de la 7ac ont par cipé à un concours
vidéo national proposé par l’Institut français de
Vienne en coopéra on avec la chaine ARTE et la
créatrice de l’émission Claire Doutriaux où il fallait
comparer avec humour la culture autrichienne à la
culture française. On sést décidé pour láprès-ski,
un mot français qui signifie deux choses totalement
différentes dans les deux pays. On a u lisé plusieurs
techniques pour notre court-métrage, parmi elles, le

stop mo on et des anima ons. Nous sommes très
contents dávoir été invités à Vienne pour la finale.
C’était un projet splendide, extraordinaire et amusant
qui forme l’esprit de groupe et de coopéra on.
Et si on gagnait le voyage à Strasbourg... on est déjà
sélec onné parmi les 10 premiers…..

Austria ene un color especial
Los austríacos sólo se visten con Dirndl y Lederhos’n,
viven en las montañas y cantan todo el empo. Los
españoles, en cambio, hablan mucho y rápido, no
trabajan y todos saben bailar flamenco. Como podéis
ver, existen los estereo pos existen de cada país y
muchas veces son bastante exagerados o falsos. ¿Pero
cuánta verdad hay en esos prejuicios?
Soy estudiante de español en Madrid y en los
úl mos meses he conocido muchas tradiciones y
peculiaridades españolas. Por ejemplo el pan con tomate para el desayuno, la siesta, las tapas y la paella.
También tuve clases de flamenco, ¡pero os imagináis
mi sorpresa cuando aprendí que nadie de mis amigos
españoles había bailado flamenco en su vida!
Pero que sólo algunos jóvenes bailen flamenco
no fue el primero ni el úl mo de mis prejuicios que
resultaron ser falsos. Por ejemplo, ahora sé que los
españoles son trabajadores, que los vascos no son
terroristas y que en Mallorca hay gente que vive y
trabaja como todos los demás.
Pero también hay muchos estereo pos que enen

una pizca de verdad. Por ejemplo, es verdad que los
españoles hablan mucho y rápido y que la comida
es deliciosa. También es verdad que en general los
hombres del norte son más brutos que los del sur.
También existen bastantes prejuicios sobre Austria
y los austríacos. La primera cosa en la que todo el
mundo piensa es la película ‘Sonrisas y lágrimas’ (‘The
Sound of Music’). Pero ése es un fenómeno inglés y
americano. La mayoría de los austriacos nunca hemos
visto la peli, y no queremos hacerlo tampoco. Otra
cosa es que sólo nos ves mos con ropa tradicional.
Ésa tampoco es verdad. Algunos la enen y la usan
en ocasiones importantes como en Navidad, Pascua
o una boda, pero no en la vida normal. ¡Pero lo que
defini vamente es verdad es que nos encantan el
Schnitzel y el Kaiserschmarr’n!
Para terminar, lo que importa es que no tengamos
prejuicios nega vos sobre los demás, que seamos
abiertos para aprender nuevas cosas sobre un país
y que corrijamos nuestros prejuicios si son falsos.

Prejuicios, ¿verdaderos o falsos?
Mi tiempo en España lo pasé en la capital de
Cataluña, Barcelona. Como Barcelona es una ciudad
mul cultural no es muy pica para España. En las
ciudades más pequeñas la gente es más tradicional.
Creo que los españoles defini vamente festejan más
que nosotros. Y también, en mi opinión comen mucho
y son muy hospitalarios.
Ahora quiero hablar sobre unos prejuicios que hay
en Austria sobre España y de si estos son verdaderos.
En Austria mucha gente cree que todas las chicas
españolas bailan flamenco, que los españoles beben
mucho alcohol y que siempre están de fiesta y que
hay muchas plazas de toros. Estos prejuicios no son
verdaderos. El flamenco viene de Andalucía, del sur
de España, y es muy popular allí, pero no ene tanta
popularidad en las otras regiones españolas. Como

las regiones de España son muy independistas y enen diferentes influencias culturales la gente de las
diferentes regiones es muy…diferente. Por ejemplo:
a los andaluces les gusta mucho ir de fiesta y a los
vascos, en el norte, les gusta mucho trabajar. Las
corridas de toros están prohibidas en una comunidad
de España.
¿Pero qué es lo que creen los españoles sobre
nosotros? Los españoles no son como los americanos,
que creen que vivimos en las montañas y “jodeln”
todo el día. No, muchos españoles saben dónde
está Austria y cómo es Austria, aunque unos piensan
que, como hablamos alemán, somos una parte de
Alemania.
Al final se puede decir que hay un poco de verdad
en los prejuicios, pero no mucha. Es mejor pasar unas
semanas en un país y conocer a la gente y la cultura
para formar nuestra propia opinión de un país.

Cádiz, donde nace la sal…
Este año hemos hecho un intercambio con alumnos españoles.
Primero vinieron los españoles a Graz y pasamos
una semana fantás ca junto a ellos. Fuimos a la
montaña, nos ramos bolas de nieve y comimos
muchísimo chocolate en Zo er.
¡Y después de tres semanas por fin era nuestro
turno! Fuimos a Andalucía, a un si o que se llama
San Fernando, en la provincia de Cádiz. Cádiz es una
ciudad muy bonita con muchas casas blancas, muchas
endas, playas maravillosas y gente muy amable que
siempre se ríe. También visitamos Sevilla. Era propio el
período de la famosa Feria de Abril. Vimos los trajes
picos para bailar flamenco y también intentamos
bailar. Allí comimos algodón de azúcar, que estaba
riquísimo. Dimos una vuelta y también fuimos a la
Plaza de España.
¡No queremos saber cuántas fotos sacamos! Exageramos comprando comida que no hay en Austria
y nuestras familias de acogida nos dieron de todo
para probar.
Fuimos a la playa y, aunque no hacía mucho calor,
nos bañamos. También tomamos el sol, disfrutamos

de la arena y algunos chicos incluso se quemaron.
Además hemos aprendido muchas palabras en andaluz. Entender el acento de los españoles fue un poco
di cil al principio pero en poco empo ya entendíamos casi todo. Y ahora ya sabemos que los andaluces
se comen las palabras, que “po sí” significa “pues sí”
y que cuando dicen “ma o meno” lo que realmente
quieren decir es “más o menos”.
Fue una experiencia que nunca vamos a olvidar. Lo
pasamos superbién y no podemos esperar más para
hacer otro intercambio.

Intercambio 2015 GRZ-BCN
Este año, el grupo de las clases 5A y 5B fue a Sant
Cugat, un pueblo muy bonito cerca de Barcelona.
Primero, en marzo, vinieron los alumnos de Àgora
Sant Cugat Interna onal School a Graz y pasamos
una semana estupenda con ellos. Y un mes después
fue nuestro turno a visitarlos. El 21 de abril empezó
el viaje y las familias de acogida nos recibieron con
los brazos abiertos. Eran muy graciosos y mostraron
mucha hospitalidad.
Durante la semana hicimos muchas excursiones.
Empezamos con la visita del Parc Güell, el parque
del famoso ar sa Gaudí, donde vimos muchas casas
y murallas coloradas y terminamos con los monumentos culturales de Barcelona, como la Sagrada
Familia – otra obra de Gaudí- la Plaza Catalunya con
su bonita fuente o El Mercado de la Boquería con
comida riquísima.
oportunidad de pasar empo con nuestras parejas de
intercambio y de par cipar en las clases. Por ejemplo, par cipamos en una clase de Educación Física,
donde jugamos a juegos muy diver dos. Fue muy
interesante ver la diferencia entre nuestro colegio y
el colegio español.
Finalmente podemos decir que fue un viaje genial,
que nos mostró mucho sobre España y la gente. Y
ahora tenemos muchos amigos nuevos que echamos
de menos.
Muchas gracias a todos los que hicieron de este
viaje una experiencia estupenda.

Una excursión que nos gustó muchísimo fue cuando viajamos a la Costa Brava. Primero visitamos Girona, allí vimos muchos barrios judíos, casas an guas
y una iglesia muy bonita. Después fuimos a la playa,

Impresiones del País Vasco
Como todos los años, un grupito de alumnos de
la 7A, 7B y 7C pasó una semana inolvidable en el
País Vasco, España. Alojados en el pueblo pequeño
de Andoain a unos 20 min de San Sebas án, disfrutaron del caluroso recibimiento de sus familias de
acogida, degustaron una variada selección de platos
vascos, llegaron a conocer la fuerza de las olas del
Mar Cantábrico armados solamente de tablas de surf
y pusieron a prueba su sen do del equilibrio con el
paddle surf. Y no sólo consiguieron ponerse de pie,
sino que también lograron, en todos los sen dos de
la palabra, sacar el máximo provecho de los siete días
que estuvieron allí ¡Qué semana de ensueño! ¡Qué
bien nos lo pasamos!

EUROLINGUA Y SWITCH 2015
El 16 de marzo de 2015 tuvo lugar el concurso
SWITCH en el que nuestros alumnos Lea Kreiner
(8b), Thiago Eisenberger (8b) y Lana Blagojevic (8c)
pudieron poner en prác ca las destrezas aprendidas
durante todos estos años. Y así, Thiago Eisenberger
(8b) ganó la medalla de oro en la modalidad de
inglés-español y Lana Blagojevic (8c) recibió también
la medalla de oro defendiéndose en inglés, español
y croata.
Pero las victorias conseguidas nos supieron a
poco, así que al día siguiente, 17 de marzo de 2015,
nuestros alumnos Ines Kirsten (6a), Niko Jeromin
Raic (6c), Maria Rissner (8a) y Nina Reitbauer (8a)
se presentaron al concurso de EUROLINGUA que tuvo
lugar en WIFI Steiermark.
Se habían estado preparando durante muchas semanas, intercambiando ideas y opiniones, pero todo
ello con un toque de diversión. A pesar de los nervios
y el cansancio tras un día largo y agotador, nuestros
alumnos supieron defenderse de una manera espectacular ante el jurado demostrando las habilidades y
el nuevo vocabulario adquirido durante nuestro curso
de preparación.
Y como dice un proverbio, “todo esfuerzo ene su
recompensa”: Nina Reitbauer (8a) y Niko Jeromin Raic
(6c) consiguieron la medalla de oro; y Maria Rissner
(8a) recibió la medalla de plata.
Además, Nina Reitbauer (8a), quedó campeona de
Es ria (Landessiegerin) y fue a Viena para representar
a Es ria en el Bundeswe bewerb, consiguiendo el
primer premio y siendo así campeona de toda Austria
en español.

Несмотря на сложную политическую ситуацию,
группа учеников из 7 ABC в октябре 2014го года
съездила к нашим партнёрам из гимназии Но
397, г. Санкт-Петербург. Их приняли сердечно, и
наша группа провела интересную неделю в этом
блестящем городе. Они видели практически все
достопримечательности и познакомились с русской культурой.
В марте 2015го года наши друзья из Питера
приезжали к нам в Грац. И хотя некоторые уже
второй раз были у нас в гостях, программа была
интересна всем. Некоторые даже ходили в поход
на Плабуч. Мы очень надеемся, что они ещё часто
будут ездить в Грац и поводить с нами интересное время. Спасибо нашим друзьям и особенно
госпоже Пфистермюллер за прекрасное время!

The Importance of the European Youth Parliament
in the Decision Making of the European Union
Year 7: Trip to Rome
At the end of September 2014 the La n students
of Year 7 arrived in the eternal city on an overnight
train from Bruck.
A ended by the teachers Ms. Schatz and Ms. Uray
they spent five days exploring Rome´s sights. They
could see into the history of ancient Rome by visi ng
i.a. the Forum Romanum, the Colosseum, St. Peter´s
Basilica and the catacombs in the outer districts of
the city.
A er an exhaus ng but hilarious and interes ng
week, they all arrived home again safe and sound,
but with a be er idea of "Roma aeterna".

We don’t turn a blind eye on our past
It’s a year for everyone to pause and remember
the millions of people who were murdered or whose
lives were changed beyond recogni on during the
NS-regime.
At GIBS we closely
cooperate with Centropa to keep the memories alive and enable
our students to get in
touch with survivors of
the Shoah. Year 5 GIBS
students met a group of
Holocaust survivors in Vienna to listen to their stories
and have coffee with them. This was a wonderful and
enriching opportunity for our students. It was very
emo onal to hear stories from a past that Austria
s ll has to come to terms with. Cafe Centropa (www.
centropa.org) is a regular event in Vienna in which
survivors meet young Austrians for an exchange in a
relaxed cafe atmosphere. We also hosted an exhibion called „Jewish Life in Central Europe“ which was
opened by Edward Serrota, the founder of Centropa.

Elfriede Jelinek’s play “Der Würgeengel von Rechnitz”
the case has gained interna onal a en on.
In addi on, 5c also went on a „Gedenkspaziergang“
to visit a few of the „Stolpersteine“ in Graz, which
have been installed to remember vic ms of the NS
regime in Graz (www.stolpersteine-graz.at).
As every year GIBS students from the History/
German elec ve course “Na onalsozialismus und
Holocaust - Gedächtnis und Gegenwart” visited the
Gedenkstä e Mauthausen and Schloß Hartheim in
the cold dark month of January, a gripping experience
that students will remember for the rest of their lives.
Furthermore, year 7 GIBS students went on a field
trip to Szombathely and Rechnitz to gain insight into
the fate of the Hungarian Jews who were imprisoned
and sent on the death marches in 1945. Both, Hungarian and GIBS students
followed traces left by
the once thriving Jewish
community of Szombathely and beyond

the infamous Rechnitz

A month later, the Hungarian students came to
Graz to go on another painful walk down memory lane
to find out where the death march of the remaining
Hungarian Jews led. Astonishingly most of the popula on of Graz is s ll unaware of what lies under many
tennis courts, schools and gardens, namely vic ms of
the NS-regime. To name just a few places: graves at
the Feliferhof, bomb craters in the Grünanger estate
in Graz-Liebenau. A commemora ve society called
Refugius has been established in Rechnitz to find out
more about the fates of the Hungarian Jews. Its head,
Paul Gulda, also a ended the memorial event Yom
HaShoa „70 Jahre Holocaust in Liebenau - 70 Jahre
Befreiung von Auschwitz“.

83 people, 39 na ons, 1 Olympiad. The 23rd Interna onal Philosophy Olympiad (short IPO) turned out
to be one of the most interes ng and fun experiences
all of the par cipants ever had.
Gathering in Tartu, a small town in Estonia (and a
quite unusual tourist des na on) young people from
all over the world – the only two con nents that did
not send representa ves were Africa, which one can
normally count with, and Australia – discovered that
philosophizing would help them overcome cultural
differences and that five days may be enough to build
up friendships that are predes ned to last for a long
period of me.
Interes ng workshops and discussions followed
by one or the other night out consuming the one or
the other glass of beer to really dive into the Estonian
culture with all its unique tradi ons helped to ensure
intercultural communica on on a level that today’s
poli cians can only dream of. I am very happy that
I had the honor to be part of this awesome experience and I advise every single student to seize the
opportunity and to par cipate in future Philosophy
Olympiads because four hours of essay wri ng are
nothing compared to five days of fun.

Für das Religion Department war das heurige
Schuljahr in vielerlei Hinsicht ein Neuanfang. Der
evangelische Teil musste nach dem Weggang von
Barbara Hyll vollkommen neu besetzt werden (Chris an Graf und Michael Kamauf); für den katholischen
Teil war es das Jahr 1 nach der Ära Franz Liebich. Mr.
Liebich, der sich nach 40 Jahren im pädagogischen
Dienst schweren Herzens in den verdienten Ruhestand verabschiedet ha e, war in den vergangenen
beiden Jahrzehnten zusammen mit Ulrike SaringerMaier dafür verantwortlich, dass der Religionsunterricht bei SchülerInnen, Eltern und KollegInnen
der GIBS stets ein hohes Ansehen genoss. Um diese
große Lücke füllen zu können, wurden zwei neue
Lehrer für diese Stelle verpflichtet: Florian Mi l und
Markus Trofaier versuchen unter Ms. Saringers umsich ger Führung mit frischem Wind, neuen Ideen
und Tatendrang ans Werk zu gehen und gleichzei g
Bewährtes zu erhalten.
Als Team sind wir davon überzeugt, dass wir mit
dem Religionsunterricht einen essen ellen Beitrag
zur Persönlichkeitsentwicklung von Jugendlichen und
jungen Erwachsenen leisten können. Es ist unser Ziel,
mit einem bunten Mix aus ethischen und konfessionellen Themen SchülerInnen dabei zu unterstützen,
ihrem Lebensalltag freudig, offen, aber auch kri sch
zu begegnen und sich im Bewusstsein ihrer eigener
Stärken konstruk v mit ihrer Lebensgestaltung auseinanderzusetzen. Das Evangelium wollen wir vor
dem Hintergrund des Wissens über Tradi on und
Kultur im 21. Jahrhundert deuten und die ewigen
Werte Verantwortung, Toleranz und Respekt immer
wieder neu begründen. Darüber hinaus möchten wir
unsere Verantwortung innerhalb der Schulgemein-

scha wahrnehmen und sind somit in zahlreichen
Arbeitsgruppen (student admission, yearbook, GIBSCARE) vertreten. Selbstverständlich pflegen wir auch
weiterhin eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit anderen
Gegenständen. So haben wir heuer zusammen mit
dem History Department den ersten Menschenrechtstag an der GIBS ausgerichtet, mit dem English
und Deutsch Department diverse Literaturthemen
und Persönlichkeiten bearbeitet, sowie gemeinsam
mit dem Art und French Department karita ve bzw.
künstlerische Projekte verwirklicht.
In unserer Unterrichtstä gkeit setzen wir vor allem
auf einen ganzheitlichen Lernansatz, Vernetzung und
eine ak ve, prak sche Beteiligung. Schon seit Jahren
leitet das Religion Department die interreligiöse Wienexkursion der 5.Klassen, unterstützt die Vinzi Werke
von Pfarrer Wolfgang Pucher, lädt die Maturaklassen
zur spirituellen Einkehr und organisiert quer durch
alle Oberstufenklassen Exkursionen zum Thema Kunst
und Kultur.
Seit heuer haben wir es mit dem Projekt GIBSCARE
auch noch gescha , sämtliche soziale und karita ve
Events unter ein Dach zu bringen. Mit dieser Pla orm
haben wir nun eine Schni stelle zwischen unserer
Schulgemeinschaft und Instituten bzw. Personen
aus karita ven Bereichen geschaffen. Wir konnten
unser Praxisnetzwerk sogar erweitern und blicken auf
erfolgreiche Projekte mit dem Ins tut für Menschenrechte und Demokra e, der An diskriminierungsstelle, dem Pfarrverband St. Andrä/Karlau, der Young Caritas und vielen anderen zurück. Die überaus posi ven
Rückmeldungen der gesamten Schulgemeinscha
sind Mo va on genug, um unsere Bemühungen im
nächsten Jahr weiter zu intensivieren.

Opera on “Christkind”
Every year, Year 4 students invite parents, teachers,
guests and fellow students to share the Christmas
joy and to show love, compassion, and solidarity
with people in need. At their fund raising stand at
the Christmas party, this year’s Year 4 collected dona ons for “Haus Rosalie” and “VinziLife”, the two
housing facili es for women run by “VinziWerke”
Graz-Eggenberg.
This past Advent, students of 2B took part in
“Opera on Christkind, ” filling 21 shoeboxes with
Christmas presents for the children a ending the
“Re et das Kind” preschool in Eggenberg. The 2b
students donated, wrapped and delivered the gi s
to the three-to-eight year olds there. The project
was a huge success on both ends and we would like
to con nue taking part in the years to come.
Their work and the audience’s generosity paid off.
Within a couple of hours they had collected € 565
euros. Students of 4C met with Mathilde Unterrieder
(chairwoman of Soeur Rosalie-VinziHelp) at the end
of January to present her with the money they had
raised.

So begrüßte Rom 25 SchülerInnen aus der 8ABC
einen Tag nach der schriftlichen Matura bei der
allerletzten gemeinsamen Reise im Rahmen der
Schule. Vier Tage Auszeit wartete auf sie. Zeit zum
Entspannen und Energie tanken: am Meer, beim Kaffeetrinken und Eis essen, bei intensiven Gesprächen
und Gesangseinlagen. Zeit um Neues zu entdecken:
Roms Unterwelt, riesige prunkvolle Kirchenbauten
und kleine mys sche Go eshäuser, Hochkultur im
Museum und Alltagskultur der Straßenkünstler. Zeit
um Erfahrungen zu sammeln: Essen zu bestellen in
einem römischen Cafe, mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln in einer fremden Stadt zu fahren und leider auch
eine Diebstahlsanzeige bei der Polizei zu machen.
Nach vier Tagen hieß es früh am Morgen am Grazer
Hauptbahnhof endgül g Abschied zu nehmen von der
Schulzeit und sich auf die nächste Sta on vorzubereiten – Prossima Fermata: Mündliche Matura.

Comple ng the Circle
Trip to St. Lambrecht Oct 22/23
Monas c life is an interes ng counterpart to our
o en overloaded and hec c daily rou ne. In Year 8,
a short retreat permits us to dive into this fascina ng
atmosphere. A er a bit of historical and theological
background on evolu on, purpose and goals of monas c life in class, 8abc had the chance to spend two
days with the monks of the Benedic on monastery
of St. Lambrecht.
A er a warm welcome by Gastpater Alfred Eichmann, we moved into our nice rooms and a ended
the sext, one part of daily liturgy of the hours. Even
though most of the monks were absent due to numerous responsibili es, we were impressed by the
profound and beau ful spirituality of the monastery.
A er an excellent meal where we served each other,
the prior took me to answer our ques ons. Abbot
Benedikt Plank turned out to be a dedicated, openhearted and intelligent monk who did not try to play
down the “hot topics” of the church. The rest of the
day was filled with a guided tour of the abbey and its
museum, as well as a thought-provoking service of the
word. A er dinner, we took a torch walk and Ms Saringer read the story “The wise son” – a story which also
played a role in the torch walk in Year 1 and helped
us to put the eight years of school into perspec ve.
Spontaneous singing concluded a perfect day.
The next morning a few of us got up very early
to take part in the laudes. A er a rich breakfast, we
took me to reflect on our approach to ourselves,
faith, family and our futures in the course of three
workshops, and after another beautiful sext and
another wonderful meal, we thanked our hosts and
went back home.

Year 2 Rewiring Our Idea of Junk
E-shirts instead of t-shirts? Spectacular instead of cellular?
This spring GIBS students from year two had the
opportunity to take part in the regional talents program Schro y project, funded by the FH Johaneum.
GIBS was granted 1000 euros to spend on materials
for the project, as well as an in-service seminar for
the four cra s teachers involved.
The kick-off event on May 11th and 12th offered
students the chance to learn about electronics and
electronic waste in Graz and around the world. A er
an introduc on from Gerhard Sprung from the FH Johanneum, year 2 students were given everything they
needed to create some unusual electronic circuits.
Using the materials provided, they had the opportunity to learn hands-on how circuits work, what circuit
resistors and conductors are and what is necessary
to allow electricity to flow. A few LED lights lost their
lives in the process, but all in all, the circuit crea ons
were a treat for everyone involved.
Students also created e-shirts: t-shirts with lightup or sound-making circuitry sewn into them. Using
exis ng t-shirts, students took what they had learned
about conduc vity in order to create one-of-a-kind
e-shirt designs.
The enthusiasm for the project was electrifying—
the year 2 students also showed what they learned
by displaying the results of the project at the school
party and giving interested visitors the opportunity
to try out electric circuits themselves.

The remaining cra s lessons in the semester were
then used to dismantle broken cell phones and use
their inner workings to create jewelry, artwork and
even motorized creatures. Some of the vibra ng
motors could be removed from the cell phones and
transformed into animals and other creepy-crawlies
buzzing around.

What is architecture? How do I perceive my architectural surroundings? How do they influence my
emo ons, moods and well-being?

small groups and each group looked for a space
somewhere on the school areal that they thought
would be a good space for a certain ac vity. In order
to build models of their “found” spaces, each group
measured, sketched and inventoried their space.

completely sure if it was going to work out, we tried
our best and prac ced hard, so we could perform
it in summer. “The White Winter Hymnal” was the
second song we chose, however we wanted it to be
something more special so we took a cover of that
song by Pentatonix and also learned a li le percussion
choreography to challenge ourselves.

This year the senior choir started off with more
than 40 people who were interested to join, however
due to me management problems we ended up with
just over 25 students that came together every week
to sing. Our first big show was the Christmas party
in December, where we sang two famous Christmas
songs for which we gained lots of good feedback.
Then we could decide what we wanted to sing next.
We tried out different things and decided to prac ce
two songs for the gradua on ceremony at the end of
the year. “Blackbird” from the Beatles was the song
we started with and despite the fact that we weren’t

The GIBS Junior Choir had a fantas c turnout of
over 40 members this year! We prepared songs for
the Holiday Concert in December and in combinaon with the Drama group put on the show Mary
Poppins in May. A string orchestra made up of 18
students from years 1-4 was featured in the song

and Paul Kaddu played drums. Several other vocal
and instrumental soloists from the lower school were
also featured.

Year 1 students sat in on a rehearsal with the Graz Opera Ochestra and had a special ques on and answer
session a erwards with Opera Director Dirk Ka an! Year 2 visited the Stefaniensaal to watch an open rehearsal
of Mozart’s Piano concerto 21. Year 3 a ended the Graz Jazz Weekend hosted by the Kunst Universität Graz.
Year 8 music students heard the KUG Jazz Orchestra perform at the WIST. Year 8 students also had a tour of
the Vienna Opera house and were treated to a private jazz concert featuring vibraphonist Flip Phillip at the
Vienese jazz club ZWE.

Chemistry Olympics
The compe on itself was challenging, but we did
our best and it brought out the team spirit in all of us.
Though we have grown smaller in number since last
year, our enthusiasm s ll lives on! This turned out to
be a unique and fun experience and we can‘t wait for
it all to happen again next year!

Styrian Bowl Winners 2015: Flag Football Tournament 2015
On the 13th of May the boys of our class (5b)
joined in an American Flag Football tournament on
the field of ASKÖ stadium. Our class had been praccing for the event for a few sessions beforehand
since our sports teacher Mr. Lassnig had organised
two coaches from the “Graz Giants” to join us in our
PE classes leading up to the event.
At the tournament we were split up into two teams
– “Blue Tomatoes” and “Blue Hawks”. Our opponents
were very strong, experienced as well as very well
prepared for the event, had studied and prac ced all
kinds of “plays” as they call them in football.
Nevertheless, our teams did extremely well and
we even managed to win the tournament and receive
the tle of “Styrian Bowl Winner 2015” in the end.
Our second team came 4th. Obviously, we made up
for our lack of experience with ambi on, enthusiasm
and dedica on.

schools although the match against our classmates
was the most exci ng. We are very grateful for the
valuable experience we gained and would be very
happy to take part in such an event again.

Like every year the “Ballarina Football tournament” for girls was played by ten girls from the
second year. Ajap, who was the top scorer, Marie
Eigner, our great goalie, Antonia, a very good
defender, and Jojo, the quick one. Also Amelie Cooke,
Valerie, Erin, Marie Krä ner, Amelie Friedl and Nora
and finally Lilith which all fought hard and with great
dedica on. We performed extremely well and even
made it to the Styrian finals – and came 13th out of
60 teams.
We are very proud and as our coach Mr. Lassnig
was also very happy with the results, he treated
everyone to an ice-cream! We would like to thank all
of the organisers of this fun and exci ng tournament.

School World Orienteering Championships in Turkey 2015
We four GIBS students, Rosa (5A), Elena (5A),
Johanna (8A) and Georg (6A), got the opportunity to take part in the School World Orienteering
Championships in Turkey (18th- 24th April). It was the
first me for all of us to compete in a compe on in
Turkey and it was a great experience.
We flew on 18th April we took the plane from
Vienna. We were all looking forward to meeting
other na ons and old friends from other countries
all over the world. A er one day of hard training and
ge ng to know the terrain, we had our compe ons:
Long- Distance and Middle- Distance. The last “race”
was a Friendship Team Event,for which people from
different backgrounds and different countries mixed
to form teams.
It was a blast and we had a really brilliant good
me. And we’re looking forward to the next School
World Orienteering Championships in Italy, 2017.

Sherwood Forest Games
Following the formidable success of last year’s
Sherwood Forest Games, this year’s 3 A B and C
again responded to Robin Hood’s call and set out to
compete with each other on the historical grounds of
resistance and bravery (in our gym). 76 brave knights
from 3 A B and C partook in various contests as diverse
as jous ng, s lt and sack racing as well as displaying
adeptness with a bow and arrow, a slingshot or a
crossbow. Furthermore, they were confronted with
a variety of challenges, such as a deadly obstacle
course, tug o’ war and an exhaus ng ba le to conquer
and cross a bridge.
All four teams, the Bravehearts, the Dark Knights,
The Greenhood Gang and Robin’s Twi er Squadron
VWA
enjoyed the contest as much as Robin Hood and his
men. Everyone had a great me!

But … we did it!!! Everyone fought and conquered
his weaker self and was awarded not only with a
cer ficate but with a be er fitness and a good feeling
of redness!

On the grounds of the World Cultural Heritage Site
of Eggenberg Castle all students of classes 6 ABC parcipated in a boot camp organized by Vibes Fitness
Studios. A er a warm-up in front of the scenic castle
an exhaus ng outdoor workout started. “We bobbed
un l we almost dropped”: sit-ups, sprints, push-ups,

Basketball Schoolcup 2014/15 – Austrian Finals / Salzburg
GIBS Boys Win 3rd Place !
This is the best result ever achieved by a GIBS team.
Stefan Rauch was top scorer of the tournament
and definitely MVP of our team. He scored 16 points
per game on average.
GIBS was also winner of the ‘Fair Play’ award (only
7 fouls/game).
