7th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan
Please allow me to take this opportunity to offer my warmest congratulations on the holding
of the 7th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan.
In the rapidly changing world of the 21st century, activities for nurturing and retaining
the next generation of engineers are of critical importance for Japan to fully develop its
competitive strength on the international stage and sustain its preeminence as a scientific
and technological nation.
However, we are facing several pressing issues to achieve this goal, not least the gradual
retirement of the generation of highly skilled engineers that have suppor ted Japan’s
monozukuri efforts in the past and the reported growing distance between young people

and the sciences.
Under these circumstances, this competition plays an extremely significant and practical role in raising the type of
engineers that will support Japan’s industries in the future. It gives them the opportunity to improve their engineering
skills in a comprehensive monozukuri contest through testing evaluations related to vehicle performance, concept,
design, and cost management.
By planning, designing, and building a vehicle, it is a valuable opportunity for students to discover the enjoyment and
difficulty of monozukuri and the pleasure and importance of working in a team toward a common goal. In the process,
they will also gain valuable and applicable knowledge of practical problem solving and applied skills, enterprising
leadership abilities, and management expertise, far exceeding what can be gained in normal studies. This is a priceless
experience for their future success in society.
This is the 7th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan, and 80 teams from both inside and outside Japan are
planning to take part. I am delighted to say that the competition is growing in popularity year after year, which goes to
show just how highly regarded it is in Japan and around the world.
I wish the best of luck to all the teams, academic advisors, and related university personnel participating in the
competition, and I would like to express my gratitude to the Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan and everyone
responsible for helping to plan and organize this event.
Welcome to the 7th Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan
Started in 2003, the Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan is a public-interest event
for nurturing students with innovative and comprehensive monozukuri abilities. This year is
the seventh event, and a record 80 teams have entered from both inside and outside Japan.
The Japanese contingent includes six teams from specialist colleges, and the overseas
contingent contains twelve teams, mainly from Asia.
As was introduced last year, careful document screening will be performed, taking into
consideration items such as safety and management scope.
This competition evaluates
each team’s vehicle design documents, placing specific importance on the Design Report
and Design Specification Sheet, and it is planned to allow only a maximum of 66 teams to
pass this screening stage.
For those teams that fall short of the requirements, we will be
implementing a follow-up program to prepare for next year’s event.

With the aim of cultivating top-class engineers for the future, the engineer training activities
that have improved team capabilities year-on-year and make up one part of this competition are very highly regarded.
While learning the essence of monozukuri through the processes involved with actually manufacturing a vehicle, by
working as a single unit, each team member has to overcome a variety of entirely new difficulties, and experiences
hands-on, the attendant intensity, excitement, and joy.
In addition, with an eye on organizing a formal event in a few
years time, this year we will also hold an EV formula prototype vehicle driving demonstration. In line with the times, we
would like to provide students with an opportunity to study electric drive-system monozukuri and intend to take the lead
in cultivating engineers rich in creative ability.
As a final note, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the same support, cooperation and sponsorship as
was provided last year, regardless of the current tough economic situation, from representatives of industry, government
and academia, everyone involved in planning and organizing the competition, and everyone in Kakegawa and Fukuroi in
Shizuoka Prefecture where the event is held.
The Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan brings together students from
universities, junior colleges, technical colleges and other institutions from all
over Japan to compete in a comprehensive monozukuri contest using formula
style vehicles that they have spent approximately one year planning, designing
and manufacturing. Complying with rules established by Formula SAE in the
US, the teams compete in terms of vehicle concept, design, cost analysis, and
presentation. Driving performance is contested after a strict safety-related vehicle
examination. The main aim of this competition is to provide an opportunity and
stage to invest students with the engineer spirit of taking up challenges through
striving, creative, and challenging teams.
General Policy Operation Competition
The biggest priority of this competition is safety and ensuring there are zero
accidents. To achieve this, we will be operating within an organizational structure
capable of guaranteeing safety.
Also, after screening the Design Reports and Design Specification Sheets prior to
the start of the competition, up to 66 teams are set to take part. For the teams
that were not able to pass this stage, we will be implementing a follow-up program
in the event hall to prepare for next year’s event.
We will also be promoting interaction between Japanese and overseas team
members and the organizing staff.

Vehicle safety and conformance to design requirements as stipulated in
the rules; Brake test: Four-wheel locking; Noise tests: An exhaust noise of
110 dB or less under prescribed conditions; Tilt table tests: Checking that
no fuel leakage occurs when the vehicle is tilted at 45 degrees, and no
rollover occurs at 60 degrees.
Cost
The intent is to encourage the participants to learn that budget and cost
are critical elements that must be taken into consideration in any production activity. The accuracy of costs in a report submitted by a deadline in
advance, and the degree of agreement between the costs identified in the
report and the actual vehicle are judged. A “real case” scenario where
students will have to respond to a challenge related to cost or manufacturing of the student vehicle.

Presentation
Presentations are made under a scenario that the developed vehicle has
been designed to meet market demands for a weekend car race for
amateur drivers, and to persuade officials from manufacturing vendors
that the vehicle can be profitably produced and sold. The students'
presentation skills are evaluated.

Design
Based on design data that has been submitted by a deadline in advance
and also on the vehicle itself, evaluation is made in terms of what technology is adopted, what innovations have been made, and whether the
adopted technology is appropriate from the standpoint of marketability.
Specifically, an oral examination is conducted to probe the appropriateness of the design of the vehicle and components, innovativeness, and
ease of manufacturing, repair, and assembly.

Acceleration
Acceleration from 0 to 75 m. On each team, each of two drivers drives
the car twice for a total of four times, and performance is judged in terms
of time.

The vehicle's cornering performance is evaluated in steady state turns
over a figure-of-eight course. On each team, each of two drivers drives
the car twice for a total of four laps, and performance is judged in terms of

Vehicles are driven over an approximately 800 m course comprised of a
combination of straights, turns, and slaloms. On each team, each of two
drivers drives the car twice for a total of four laps, and performance is
judged in terms of time.

Endurance and
fuel economy
Vehicles are driven over an approximately 22 km course comprised of a
combination of straights, turns, and slaloms. On each team, each of two
drivers drives the car by taking turns, switching at the mid point of the run,
and performance is judged in terms of time. Fuel economy is evaluated
in terms of the amount of fuel consumed in the endurance test.
