Coaching - Spooky Nook Sports
About Us
Nook Basketball is a highly organized, nationwide competitive AAU network designed for athletes to enhance their
basketball skills, compete at high-level tournaments, showcase their abilities to recruiters and individually train to
achieve any developmental goals they have for the sport. We look to match all basketball players with a team at their
skill level to advance their love of the game. The Nook Basketball Academy was created to provide an opportunity for
aspiring basketball players to receive the training they need to accomplish their goals. Our coaches have a wide range of
experience and knowledge to help players reach new levels.
NEW STANDARDS
Our club is striving to set new standards in Academy Basketball. Our goal is to be the leader in:
• Developing professional and kind discourse between clubs
• Facilitating an equitable tryout process
• Providing value in line with the cost of play
• Contributing positively to the overall environment of our AAU region
• Setting a course for the highest ethical standards of behavior
Our organization has two main goals. First, we will provide quality basketball and athletic instruction to any youth
athlete who desires it. Optional basketball programs include youth development programs, private and semi-private
lessons and seminars. We will support parents and provide top-notch guidance for teams in competition.
Second, we will provide quality education to our coaches, players and parents. This will constitute content-based
publications, workshops, seminars and reviews. This education will serve to increase understanding of how to do things
the right way, as well as to motivate a spirit of collaboration and communication.
Simply stated, we want to provide as much value as we can while fostering an environment of honesty and integrity,
passion and enthusiasm, strong values and a familial experience.
Whether you are looking to obtain a college scholarship, win medals, or get better at the sport you love, we are here to
help you achieve your goals. We look forward to making you a part of The Nook family.
Coaching
The Nook coaching staff will contribute to the success of many of the area’s
top basketball players. Our academy program gives girls and boys the
opportunity to gain instruction from coaches that are not always available to
them at their local schools. Our coaching development program will educate
coaching staff to sharpen their skill set and broaden their knowledge,
ensuring our athletes are getting the best training possible. With great
training comes great success!

ORTHOPEDIC ASSOCIATES OF LANCASTER
With a full-service office located on site, Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL) and Spooky Nook Sports partner to
provide athletic trainers during all home practices, tournaments, games and sessions. This is included in players’
academy tuition. Both OAL doctors and trainers are vital to the prevention of injury. Should an injury occur, athletic
trainers also serve as the first-responders. A doctor is on-call if the injury requires urgent care. Additionally, OAL’s expert
staff serves as the team physicians for the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey team. The team makes their home at
Spooky Nook Sports.
SPEED & AGILITY TRAINING
A program for speed and agility training sessions is included in academy tuition.* The focus of the program is athletic
explosion and form, foot speed, agility, body control, acceleration and deceleration, proprioception and kinesthetic
awareness. These sessions will help the athlete in all phases of their game.
*Programs vary depending on team placement and age group.
2
YOUTH MEMBERSHIP
A seasonal Nook Fitness Center Membership is included in Nook Basketball tuition for all players over 11 years of age.
This membership allows players use of our 10,000 square foot fitness center, which offers 36 pieces of Life Fitness
cardiovascular equipment, strength/functional training machines and free weights. Ages 13 and over are allowed
unsupervised use of the area and equipment.
FOR PARENTS
Our Nook Academy parents no longer need to sit on the bleachers and watch every practice. Parents receive preferred
pricing on fitness memberships with no initiation fee and no time commitment. A fitness membership includes access to
our state-of-the-art cardiovascular equipment, strength-training equipment, free weights and functional training
equipment. Parents will have access to the group exercise studios, group cycling studio and men’s and women’s locker
rooms and showers. Parents will also have access to the parent’s lounge during practice days. * The lounge is a quiet
place to get caught up on work, read a book or get away from the noise.
*When available.
Additional Support
The following positions will provide support in addition to our coaching staff:
RECRUITING COORDINATOR
Nook Basketball has added a new position to the staff this year. The Recruiting Coordinator will assist our athletes in
contacting the colleges of their choice, creating player profiles and providing college coaches with player information and
schedules. The Recruiting Coordinator will be running a clinic to provide a basic overview of the recruiting process and
can meet with players and parents to understand their individual situations and goals.
Nook Basketball is committed to providing our players with maximum college exposure by playing in high profile
tournaments when available and appropriate, promoting athletes via website, email, direct calls, video links and
providing our athletes with support from our Recruiting Coordinator. *
*Personalized services will be available for an extra fee for those who desire more individual attention.
SUPERVISOR OF PLAYER DEVELOPMENT
The Supervisor of Player Development will be in charge of staffing and running basketball clinics that are geared towards
specific skill sets to help players gain better technique. The Supervisor of Player Development will also attend as many
practices as possible to assist the coaches in giving each player individual attention. Through working with each team’s
coach and seeing the players in practice, they will have a better understanding of what aspects of the game needs
improvement for individual players and for the team as a whole. Our Supervisor of Player Development will coordinate
any private lesson a player wishes to set up.
SUPERVISOR OF COACHING DEVELOPMENT
Our Supervisor of Coaching Development is a valuable tool for our academy coaches. This person will be tasked with
creating coaching standards for everything from teaching the fundamentals to more advanced techniques. We want our
coaches to take the same approach across all age levels. Coaching standards include approved drill sets and practice
plans to ensure our athletes are receiving the same message. Clinics for coaches will be offered throughout the season
to help our coaches stay up-to-date on instruction methods. Clinics will help coaches become better at what they do and
will provide a resource for them when struggling in certain areas.

2014 Tryouts
March 1 & 2 (please attend both sessions)
2:00pm - 4:00pm: Boys and girls in grades 2 - 5
4:00pm - 6:00pm: Boys and girls in grades 6 - 8
6:00pm - 8:00pm: Boys and girls in grades 9 - 12
Tryout Fee: $35.00 (includes reversible practice jersey)
All tryouts will be held at The Nook and will consist of two 2-hour sessions (one each day). These professional and
focused tryouts will have a team of evaluators assigning players onto appropriate level teams. We feel strongly that being
on a team at the appropriate level will make a player’s experience the best that it can be. Understanding that we will
have a wide range of players with different backgrounds and unique future plans, we will do our best to assign players to
the appropriate teams. All tryouts will be CLOSED to parents.
Teams will be decided and based off of two main skill levels called Nook Black and Nook Green. There will also be an Elite
level offered to age groups with teams capable of competing at a higher level. The decisions on team placement will be
unbiased and final.
PLAYING TIME PHILOSOPHY
At the Nook Basketball Academy, we believe that every player who is attending practice and is part of a team should play
in each individual half of the game, and a minimum of 25% of the game. Coaches will be aware and held accountable for
this guideline.
PRACTICE TIMES & DATES
Practices will be held on a combination of Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 11 through the end of the
tournament season, typically in June. All practice schedules will be released well in advance.
TOURNAMENTS
AAU/Travel tournaments exist all over the area. Many of our tournaments this year will be played on our Spooky Nook
campus, cutting down the need for overnight stay and travel time. We are hosting 3 of our own events here at The Nook.
This year one of the largest East Coast tournaments will be moving from Valley Forge to Spooky Nook Sports. We will also
be hosting an AAU Super-Regional event! These are exciting times to be a part of our Nook Basketball Academy!
PLAYER EVALUATIONS
After the season, each coach will be required to fill out an evaluation sheet for each player. They will then meet with the
player for a few minutes to discuss the evaluation report. The report will address the strengths and positive
performances of the player, as well as areas the player could improve on before next the next season. This is a critical
component of our program so that each player understands what to focus on during the off-season.
