There is a little over one month to go before the Groundbreaking event on Friday, May 11th for
The Guttman Family Science Wing. It has been extremely gratifying to see so many parents, alumni and
friends of TanenbaumCHAT open their hearts and wallets to help expand and upgrade the Wallenberg
Campus. But, the work is not yet complete.
The TanenbaumCHAT that the community currently enjoys was built by generous donors who in past
gave their time, money and efforts to ensure that Jewish students receive a first rate secular and Jewish
education. There is an urgent need for the physical plant to be improved to match the superior education
received and the additional skills gained in time-management, volunteerism and multi-tasking. The time is
now for our generation to propel the school and our community forward. If not now, when?
The Together Campaign is an important community initiative. Although we have raised $7.2 million to
date, there is still a ways to go to reach our ultimate goal of $10 million. We would like to advance our
campaign significantly before the Passover break.
We now have an online pledge form. Click here to complete it online. If you prefer, please contact
Frances Bigman, Director of Advancement, at 416-636-5984 ext. 230 or [email protected].
In so doing, you will be joining our community of generous supporters.
Chag Sameach.

On March 6th over 50 business professionals
gathered at a fundraising event hosted by
David Matlow and Stephen Bloom in the boardrooms
of Goodmans LLP. Over lunch, the group heard
from TanenbaumCHAT Director of Education
Paul Shaviv who emphasized the value that the new
Guttman Family Science Wing will bring to the school.
Together Campaign chair Leanne Matlow
delivered a comprehensive presentation highlighting
the features and benefits of the wing. Finally,
CFO/Executive Director Rhona Birenbaum explained
the financial position of this fundraising endeavor.
An impressive $450,000
was raised from the room
The personal stories and appeals from the hosts – David
and Stephen – clearly hit home. At this time, an
impressive $450,000 and counting was raised from
the room, with more discussions underway.

Essential elements of the Together Campaign
Grade 9 science students (left to right) Shira Eisen, Adam Levin, Max Librach.
There has been much excitement about the
Science Learner’s Wall, a new fundraising
initiative which will provide permanent
recognition for donors who give $5,000 to the
Together Campaign. The Science Learner’s Wall
is an artistic impression of the Periodic Table
of Elements and features 118 recognition
opportunities. So far, nearly 33 percent of the
elements have been sold.
With our school’s graduation just around the
corner, in June, the Science Learner’s Wall is a
wonderful chance for families to both honour their
Class of 2012 graduate and to make a significant
gift to TanenbaumCHAT. Their philanthropic
support of the Together Campaign will ensure
that all current and future students have access
to a state-of-the-art facility and innovative
science programming.

“I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the
successful completion of TanenbaumCHAT than by
supporting this worthwhile cause,” says Leanne
Matlow, Together Campaign Chair. “We invite
all families to make their donation to the Science
Learner’s Wall and give back to TanenbaumCHAT,
where their children thrived, and to strengthen
the school’s position in the Jewish community.”
New science wing will lead to better learning
The Guttman Family Science Wing will
enable greater investigative, hands-on learning.
Students will work at custom-designed pods at
the perimeter in five new labs, providing more
flexibility and enriched, collaborative experiences.
This new set-up creates better flow for the
science teacher to move around, demonstrate
larger experiments from the middle of the lab,
conduct smaller ‘discovery moments’ and offer
students more individualized attention at each pod.
The pods will be equipped with gas, water and
equipment used regularly which will save time
in over 40 science classes. “Right now each
student has to get equipment and supplies from
a cart, which can be a bit chaotic, but they will
soon have everything right at their fingertips,”
explains Paula Sousa, Head of Science. “It will
also be easier to take stock of what we have,
upgrade our supplies and generate an organized
inventory system. We will be able to offer our
students the best resources possible.”
Since the wall between the labs slide open to
create a double classroom, teachers will be able
to “team teach” with each other or it can serve
as an ideal space for a guest speaker.
“The new science wing will impact
students’ learning, not only in science, but
throughout the school. The wing will foster a
greater synergy among hundreds of students, staff,
parents and the community,” says Helen Fox,
Principal, Wallenberg Campus. “In these 21st
century facilities, we will now have the
possibilities for exploring curriculum to its depths
with the most innovative space, equipment
and technology.”
