LETTER TO PARENTS
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Thank you for considering Silver Lake as an option for your child(ren) this
summer. In an era of specialty camps (science, engineering, gymnastics, hockey
etc.) we’re proud to offer a traditional summer camp experience where kids
can simply be outdoors enjoying a variety of activities.
As parents ourselves, we understand the level of trust and confidence you
need when sending your child(ren) off to camp. Here’s some information that
might help you make your decision (and rest easier ).

STAFF: All our staff have graduated from our two year leadership program,
CILTs. In addition, many of them grew up attending camp at Silver Lake and
know first-hand the positive impact they can have on the lives of campers –
they’re here to give back. Our onsite, camper to staff ratio is 2:1 and all staff
have Standard First Aid with CPR C. All swimming and waterfront activities
are supervised by certified lifeguards.
FACILITIES: Over the past 7 years, we have invested over one million
dollars in our facilities and property including a new Dining Hall, renovated
Commercial Kitchen, five new Camper Cabins, new Washrooms and plenty of
program equipment from a new Archery Range and an expanded Low Ropes
Course to a Water Trampoline and Sailboats.
F OOD: Quality, homemade food is culturally significant to Mennonites, and
campers will experience that first-hand while at camp! Our head cook makes
freshly baked bread, homemade mac and cheese, soups and sauces from scratch
and the list goes on.
P ROGRAM: We’re constantly visiting other camps, Outdoor Education
Centres, and attending conferences all in an effort to provide solid
programming. At Silver Lake we dedicate each week of camp to a different
age range to ensure your camper is there with others of similar age. That also
allows us to tailor the programming to their specific age range. See the next
page for a list of camper activities (you’ll want to come too!).

CAMPERS LOOK FORWARD TO:
Swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, tetherball, gagaball, volleyball, arts and crafts,
nature, Quest (exploring faith), Polar Bear Dip, camp-wide games, Low Ropes Adventure
Course, campfires, music and singing and quiet time for reading and writing.
EXPLORING FAITH
The Quest & Missions programs are the foundation of our Christian camping experience.
Through Mennonite-Anabaptist values and beliefs our Quest program explores the
foundations of faith including Bible stories and teachings, all conducted in a supportive
environment. In partnership with Mennonite Central Committee Ontario (MCCO), the
Missions program offers campers a chance to actively participate in missional service
projects such as building health and/or school kits, knotting comforters and other MCCO
mission oriented initiatives.
A PLACE FOR EVERYONE
The Inclusion Program facilitates the inclusion of children with special needs into the
program with campers their own age. It gives an opportunity for those requiring more
attention and care to participate and allows for learning and growth within the entire
camp community. Please note our facilities are not wheelchair accessible.
Silver Lake Mennonite Camp has a Campership Fund that provides financial assistance
for children who would otherwise be unable to attend camp because of financial
constraints. There is an application / dispersal process. Please contact the camp office
for further details.

Online: Visit www.slmc.ca/camp to register and pay online. It’s simple, easy, quick and convenient.
You’ll see real time availability and receive instant confirmation once registered.
Snailmail: Complete the attached registration form (CILT and Family Camp forms are on-line).
Please ensure you have included all information including your email address which will be used to
send the confirmation package. Include two cheques:
Cheque #1; $100 deposit (if paid prior to March 31)
Cheque #2; Balance of camp fees postdated for March 31
Note: If you are registering after March 31, please send full payment in one cheque.
OTHER IMPORTANT REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
Bring along a friend! If you recruit a friend, we’ll do everything we can to ensure cabin mate
requests are honoured.
Snailmail applications are processed by the post office stamp date.
A 10% discount is available to families registering 3 or more campers. Once your child is registered,
you will receive a confirmation package which includes additional information about the camp.
All Fees include 13% HST.
Summer Camps
MINI CAMP & CAMP 1 (Ages 6-10)
These sessions offer the perfect opportunity for children to experience camp life! Mini
Camp is three days and two nights while Camp 1 is five days and four nights. During
these camps, we increase our counsellor to camper ratio to ensure your child receives
all the attention needed to make their first camp experience amazing! We even plan
a special “homesick proof” menu and keep a special eye out for picky eaters – we’ll
make sure they find something good to eat. As with all our camps we make every effort
to accommodate all bunk-mate requests, so bring along a friend and we’ll make sure
they’re together in the same cabin. Tip to Parents: For a first time camp experience,
we recommend Mini Camp on its own, and for the second year Camp 1 is a good bet.
However, if your camper is super keen you can register them for both Mini Camp and
Camp 1 which run seamlessly into each other.
CAMP 2 (Ages 9 -14), CAMP 5 (Ages 7-12) and SKILLS CAMP (Ages 9-14)
For those with a busy summer schedule where one week is the only option, these
sessions allow campers to participate in all the activities camp has to offer including
canoeing, kayaking, crafts, low ropes adventure course, nature, archery, quest, field
games and worship/campfire. As a cabin, campers determine what each day will look
like by picking their activity schedule. Skillz Camp is very similar to Camp 2 and Camp 5
but campers can chose one specialty session to join, in addition to the cabin activities.
Tip to Camp 2 Parents: You have an option to register your camper for one week or two
weeks. For two weeks, register for Camp 2 as well as Young Explorers Hike (seven day
experience with three days and two nights camping and exploring at Cypress Lake at
Bruce Peninsula National Park) or Young Explorers Canoe (seven day experience with
three days and two nights paddling along the Saugeen River).
➤ REVAMPED FOR 2016!
ARTS & ADVENTURE CAMP (AGES 9-14)
You asked and we listened. Arts & Adventure Camp has been completely overhauled
for 2016. Week one is dedicated to building strong relationships within each cabin with
cabin groups doing all traditional camp activities together. Within the first week each
cabin group also heads to the Bruce Trail for a three day, two night camping adventure
in Bruce Peninsula National Park, near Cyprus Lake which will no doubt be the highlight
of the two weeks! The second week is dedicated to specialty sessions lead by an
assortment of guests. Please see the opposite page for a complete list of sessions.
The following sessions have been confirmed for 2016: Culinary Arts, Mountain Biking,
Wilderness Survival, Sailing, Water Sports, Music-making, Photography, Drama,
Beading, Stained Glass, Wood working, Construction and Adventure Course
(low-ropes and team initiatives).
Prior to arriving at camp, campers will be asked to select four specialty sessions.
Campers will spend three hours a day, for six days, participating in those chosen
activities. We intentionally limit the number of campers for this camp to 70 to ensure
small group sizes and to provide accommodation for guests leading sessions.
Tip to Parents: Please note, early registration for Arts & Adventure Camp is
recommended due to the anticipated high demand.
TEEN CAMP (Ages 13-16)
This camp is a must for any teen and will undoubtedly be the highlight of their summer!
The programming is tailored to teens and features lots of creative activities such as
concerts, coffee houses, movie nights, day hikes, ultimate Frisbee, survival games,
woodworking, mountain biking, beach party and late night star gazing to name a few.
Don’t worry, there will be plenty of time for the traditional camp activities as well! This
year we have instructional coaches coming from the Ontario Disk Sports Association to
run Frisbee sessions! These guys are good and will demonstrate techniques and tricks
and lead games of Ultimate Frisbee and Frisbee Golf. Tip to Parents: You have an option
to register your camper for one week or two weeks. For two weeks, register for Teen
Camp as well as Teen X Hike (seven day experience with four days and three nights in
Algonquin Provincial Park) or Teen X Canoe (seven day experience with four days and
three nights on the rivers and lakes of Massasauga Provincial Park).
CILTS (CAMPERS IN LEADERSHIP TRAINING) (Ages 15-17)
CILTs is a two year leadership program designed to equip and train campers to be
effective leaders at camp and beyond. CILT 1 is for 15 year olds (as of January 1, 2016)
who are interested in learning valuable leadership skills that can be used in all aspects
of their life. Participants are encouraged to develop a sense of self as they grow in
understanding of leadership styles, group dynamics and communication skills. Openended spiritual discussion will provide opportunities for spiritual growth. Participants
will get a chance to build hard skills as they lead their own three day backpacking trip in
Bruce Peninsula National Park. Space is limited to 12 participants per session
(24 participants in total). Please complete the CILT 1 application form found on our
website – www.slmc.ca/camp – before March 30, 2016. Acceptance letters will be sent
out April 15, 2016.
CILT 2 is a leadership program for teens, who completed CILT 1, with a specific focus on
developing counselling/staffing skills for use in the context of Christian Camping.
FAMILY CAMP
All inclusive camping on the August long weekend! Join us for a weekend of great
programming and fun. Campers, both young and old (parents – that’s you!), can enjoy
all that SLMC has to offer. We provide the food, staffing and programming which allows
you to spend a relaxing weekend at camp. Visit www.slmc.ca/camp to view the 2016
Family Camp schedule and get a sense of what the weekend is all about. Prices shown
on brochure are per family.
Adventure Programs
Looking for some adventure this summer? Hiking, canoeing and kayaking trips, led by
qualified and experienced staff are available for campers ages 9-16. We’ve carefully
selected the best routes based on age of participants. These trips provide the perfect
opportunity to forge new friendships and gain practical outdoor skills while exploring
God’s amazing creation. SLMC will provide all necessary outtripping equipment.
Space is limited so register early!
WHAT TO EXPECT
Both Young Explorers and Teen X are one week adventures. Campers spend the first
few days onsite doing team-building excerises, enjoying traditional camp activities and
preparing for the trip. They start their off-site adventure mid-week and return to camp
in time for showers and banquet on Friday evening. Campers can opt to stay at camp for
an additional week (Young Explorers would stay for Camp 2 and Teen X campers would
stay for Teen Camp).
YOUNG EXPLORERS HIKE OR CANOE (Ages 9-14)
Hike – One week adventure with three days and two nights off-site hiking the Bruce Trail
in Bruce Peninsula National Park.
Canoe – One week adventure with paddlers exploring a carefully selected section of the
Saugeen River on a three day, two night trip between Hanover and Southampton.

Often Young Explorer participants stay for Camp 2 to create a two week camp
experience.
TEEN X HIKE OR CANOE (Ages 13-16)
Hike – One week adventure with four days and three nights off-site hiking the trails in
Algonquin Provincial Park.
Canoe – One week adventure with four days and three nights off-site exploring the rivers

Often Teen X participants stay for Teen Camp to create a two week
camp experience.
We just wanted to say that we thank everyone from the bottom
of our hearts for such wonderful camp experiences over the years
for all of our three children. As we have said in the past, SLMC is
by far the best investment we have made for our childrens’ future‚
lifelong memories, friendships and personal growth experiences.

Thanks again to you and all the staff (especially Barrett, Jake
and Mary) for making Cam’s first experience at Silver Lake so
positive and memorable. He had a great time and in fact, was
crying at supper time tonight because he missed camp so much!
(We had to set up his sleeping bag on his bed and I had to read
him his bedtime stories in the dark with my headlamp…because
“that’s what the counsellors do!”)

Steve had a great time at the mini camp! He did say he was a
little homesick the second night and cried a bit but when asked
if he wants to do it again next year, he didn’t hesitate at all to
say “yeah”! He loved everything about it. He had been there last
year for the violin day camp and loved it then as well. He is very
excited to be going again this week for day camp. From what I
can see so far, you guys run a great program there and we are
delighted that you are close to home for us and that our kids are
able to go there. We are also very happy that it is a Christian
camp and that the kids will have that influence as well. We are
spreading the news locally, we know lots of people that are
looking for a great camp close to home. Keep up the good work!!

All medications will be collected by the nurse/medic at registration. All medications must come in their original container.
Prescription medications must be for the child indicated on the label and all labels must have proper dosages detailed.
CONDITIONS AND WAIVER
1. T he parent(s) or guardian(s) submitting this registration is/are those having legal custody over the named camper. Signature on the
registration form signifies that both parents/guardians are in agreement with the conditions of enrollment. Conditions of custody,
if applicable, will be fully communicated in writing to the Camp, including a photocopy of the section of any court order referring to
visitation rights.
2. W
hile every precaution shall be taken to ensure the good welfare and protection of the camper, Silver Lake Mennonite Camp, its Directors,
staff members, employees, or facilities outside of the camp grounds are hereby released from any liability in the event of any accident or
misfortune that may occur to the applicant. Each Camper must be covered by Provincial Health Insurance or equivalent medical insurance.
3. In the event that a camper requires special medical, x-ray or treatment beyond that which is available at Camp, the signature of
parents/guardians on this registration shall give the Camp Director and/or the nurse/medic the right to arrange for any special services
and/or medical attention necessary for the camper’s welfare and good health. In such a situation, the Camp will attempt to notify the
parents/guardians as soon as possible. The parents/guardians are responsible for any additional expense that may result from such services.
4. P arents/guardians agree to permit reasonable use of photos and videos or other pictures of the applicant camper in promoting the
Camp or its activities and programs.
