About the
Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center
The Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center will be
located on the same site as the new Lakeland Continuing
Care Center on Cleveland Avenue in Lincoln Township –
approximately one-quarter mile south of the intersection of
Glenlord Road.
The 18,400-square-foot facility will feature large, private
patient rooms with provisions for family to stay overnight,
large and small gathering rooms, and a comforting
environment. The patient rooms will offer adjoining private
baths and decor that is comfortable, calm, and peaceful.
Each room will have natural views or a small private patio
area where patients and families can enjoy companionship
in an open-air setting. The grounds will invite walks and
quiet time in nature, with walkways accommodating beds
so that patients can be included in this comforting activity.

Ann Dahmer and Kevin Geiser of St. Joseph, along with Ann’s
father, Roy Dahmer, have committed a major financial gift toward
the Merlin and Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center. The donation will
support the facility’s family room, which will be dedicated in honor
of Mr. Dahmer and to the memory of his wife, Marguerite, and in
memory of Kevin’s parents, Elaine and Dale Geiser.
For Ann and Kevin, who are married and have lived in the area
for over 25 years, the gift holds personal meaning: both of Kevin’s
parents were placed at a hospice residence in Holland, Michigan,
and Ann’s mother received hospice care in her home in Florida.
“A hospice residence wasn’t available for Ann’s mother. While
she received excellent care, we saw how much more such a facility
was able to deliver to our family when my parents received that
level of care,” Kevin said. “We’re ecstatic that the Merlin and
Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center is about to become a part of the
community, completing the hospice experience here. I know our
community will benefit greatly.”
Ann, a long-time board member of Hospice at Home, explained
that once she and Kevin saw the plans for the hospice residence,
supporting the family room was an easy decision.
“This project has captured our hearts,
and we urge others to join us in fulfilling
this need in our community,” Ann said.

Where Do You Work?
It’s a very common question. I’m sure
you’ve been asked it many times. Have you
ever wondered what kind of a response
you’ll get?
Well, that crossed Heidi’s mind as her
cashier at Martin’s in Niles stopped midscan and asked, very specifically, if she
worked in the Emergency Department at
Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles. Since
Heidi Dickson is a registered nurse at our
ED in Niles, she answered, “yes.”
The cashier promptly burst into tears.
Heidi was shocked. The first thought
that crossed her mind was, “Oh, no, what
did I do to make her this upset?”
What happened next caused Heidi to
feel “a little freaked out.” The cashier came
around the counter, and in the middle of
a busy grocery store, gave Heidi a big hug
and a kiss on the cheek!
I don’t know about you, but when I
tell someone where I work, I invariably
get a story about their last experience at a
Lakeland facility or maybe with one of the
physicians on our medical staff. Fortunately
the majority of those stories are very
positive. I haven’t been hugged very often.
I’ve never been kissed.
The cashier explained herself: “You’re
the nurse that took care of my boyfriend
the other night. If it wasn’t for you and the
other people that work in the Niles ED, he
would be dead.”
Then it all came back to Heidi. The
boyfriend presented with lower extremity
numbness. Dr. Vincent Blum completed
a thorough workup and diagnosed a
life-threatening condition. The patient
was transferred to Lakeland Regional
Medical Center, St. Joseph for emergency
vascular surgery.
The cashier gathered the other cashiers
in the store as she recounted her story. She
asked Heidi to pass along a “big thank you”
to all the staff and to tell them that
they were “angels.” She particularly
wanted to thank Dr. Blum and to tell him
that she and her boyfriend would be
“forever grateful.”
As Heidi told the story, she shared
that she had never felt so proud of
where she worked and the difference
she can make in people’s lives. Despite
all the stress and difficult situations our
emergency department staff encounter
every day, being part of such a positive
experience had made it all worthwhile.
When I heard this story, I could
hardly wait to share it with you. What
an example of Lakeland’s TRAITS. It’s a
good example of “Accountability” and
certainly of “Teamwork.” It’s a great
example of “Inspiration.”

Andrea Godfrey: New Manager of
Ortho/Neuro in St. Joseph
Andrea Godfrey, RN, joined Lakeland HealthCare a little over a
year ago as a Clinical Performance Coordinator for Performance
Support. She enjoyed working with the different service lines to
help them develop process improvements to reach their goals,
but something was missing.
“...it’s always rewarding to know that you’re helping
them get through a challenge and making that
period of their life better.”
After years of interacting with
patients and their families, Andrea
yearned for that personal and social
connection that comes with providing
care. She’ll get that back in her new
role as patient care manager of the
Ortho/Neuro unit at Lakeland
Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.
“I’m really excited about this new
opportunity,” Andrea said. “I’m looking
forward to spending more time with
Andrea Godfrey
our patients and their families.”
Prior to coming to Lakeland, Andrea worked for the University
of Michigan Health System on the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit.
She served as a staff nurse, charge nurse, and a preceptor, someone
who helps train and mentor new nurses.
Andrea holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and another in
Biopsychology, the study of the effect of biological influences
on mental processes. At Lakeland, she’s been involved in the
Geriatric Hip Fracture Program, Primary Stroke Center Committee,
and the Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection Committee,
among others.
“I hope that my experiences and background are quite helpful
to me,” Andrea said. “I’ll rely on them to help us reach our goals of
improving outcomes and providing exemplary patient experiences.
This can be a challenge because our unit cares for a wide variety of
patients, but it’s always rewarding to know that you’re helping them
get through a challenge and making that period of their life better.”
Andrea oversees approximately 60 associates. She reports
directly to Debbie Lull, Division Director of Patient Care Services.

Journeying into Old Age
Are you struggling to help your parents manage the
delicate balance of aging gracefully? If you’d like some
extra support, the Area Agency on Aging Region IV is
hosting a free educational program entitled, “Journeying
with Your Parents into Their Old Age.”
The program covers practical solutions to common
problems facing our older family members. Information will
be provided on basic medical and legal topics, stress and the
caregiver, and understanding family dynamics.
The class is held in two-hour blocks over three

How to Properly Dispose of
Unused Medications
Is your medicine cabinet filled with
expired drugs or medications that
you no longer use? Use these tips,
approved the by the Food and Drug
Administration, to safely dispose of your
unwanted/unused medications.
• Follow disposal instructions on the
drug label or patient information
that accompanies your medication.
Do NOT flush prescription drugs
down the toilet, unless this information specifically
instructs you to do so.
• Take advantage of community drug disposal programs
that allow you to bring unused drugs to a central
location for proper discarding.
• If no instructions are provided on the drug label and no
disposal programs are available in your area, throw the
drugs in your household trash.
When placing prescription drugs in your household trash,
remember to take them out of their original container and mix
them with an undesirable substance such as coffee grounds
or kitty litter in a sealable bag or other container. This makes
the medications less appealing to children and pets and
unrecognizable to anyone intentionally sifting through your trash.

awareness seminar and free prostate cancer screenings

Prostate Cancer Awareness Seminar
Benjamin Stockton, MD, Lakeside Urology, the area’s
only fellowship-trained da Vinci® robotics surgeon, will lead
a discussion about the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment
options for prostate cancer. He will provide an overview of the

Changes to Rapid Response Process Recognizing Early Signs
Activate Team through Vocera
of Alzheimer’s
Associates at Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles and Lakeland Regional
Medical Center, St. Joseph can now quickly and conveniently activate Rapid
Response, formerly known as SWAT, through Vocera.
Please note that the Vocera command for associates at each location is
different. Here’s how to activate the Rapid Response Team at your site:
Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph
Press the call button, wait for the genie to respond, and then say,
“Broadcast to Rapid Response.”
Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles
Press the call button, wait for the genie to respond, and then say,
“Broadcast to Niles Rapid Response.”
Once the call is open, be sure to indicate your location, including the
room number and unit, and identify the situation. The Rapid Response Team
will respond to the patient’s bedside in five minutes or less.
These are specially trained clinicians that will collaborate with the
primary nurse to assess the patient’s condition and develop a treatment
plan. The goal of Rapid Response is to prevent codes, decrease patient
mortality, optimize communication during critical situations, and enhance
the decision-making skills of nurses.
Associates at Niles and St. Joseph may
continue to activate Rapid Response using the
paging system. The Rapid Response process at
Lakeland Community Hospital, Watervliet will
not change at this time.

Free Program Open to the Community
If you or someone you know is experiencing
memory loss or behavioral changes, it’s time to
understand the early signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
This free program, hosted by Jan Trapani, RN,
Lakeland Parish Nurse, will help attendees learn to
identify the warning signs and symptoms of dementia
and Alzheimer’s. It will also include information about
where to go for diagnosis, understanding the changes
that you can expect as the disease progresses, and links
to community resources.
