All Saints builds Leaning Tower of Pizza for Munn Park
WINTER HAVEN – All Saints Academy engineering students are building a scale
model of the Leaning Tower of Pisa – out of cardboard pizza boxes.
Students will erect “The Leaning Tower of Pizza” in Lakeland’s Munn Park for the 6
p.m. Food Truck Rally on Thursday, Nov. 13. The engineering class includes
students in grades 9-12.
“We are building the next generation of creative and innovative students, who are
encouraged to maximize these efforts while pursuing excellence,” said Dr. Rod
Brame, who teaches the Engineering Technologies class. Project partners include
Paint Along Studios, Palace Pizza, and Lakeland Downtown Development
Authority.
For several weeks, ASA students in the Engineering Technologies class have studied
the original Tower of Pisa; designed prototypes, modified components; and built
sections with pizza boxes donated by Palace Pizza. The tower is being constructed in sections, which are being prepped for paint.
Design and construction are being documented by Lakeland TV (LKLD TV). On Thursday, painted sections will be transported to
Munn Park for final assembly.
“We hope everyone will come watch our students complete the installation of the Leaning Tower of Pizza during the Food Truck
Rally on Thursday,” said Brame.
Several ASA student groups and teams have taken part in STEM-related events this fall. A seventh grade team won second place in
the Florida Polytechnic Pumpkin Chunkin’ Challenge, competing against college students. A team of high school students presented a
thesis to improve the performance and precision of da Vinci robotic surgery machines at the RAMSES Conference, hosted by Florida
Polytechnic. This week, a team of FIRST LEGO League elementary students met with a national software company Vice President to
provide feedback about improvements to the company’s educational software.
