GENERAL PATRON
The World Packaging Organisation is a non-profit, nongovernmental, international federation of national packaging institutes and associations, regional packaging
federations and other interested parties including corporations and trade associations.
Founded September 6, 1968 in Tokyo by visionary leaders from the global packaging community, the purposes
of the organisation include encouraging the development of packaging technology, science, access and engineering, contributing to the development of international trade and stimulating education and training in
packaging.
Primary activities of the organisation today are to
promote education through meetings, special activities
and publications, to sponsor an international packaging
design awards program and to facilitate contact and exchange among the various national institutes of packaging.
One of the major events of the World Packaging Organisation is the The WorldStar Competition. The pre-eminent
international award in packaging, WorldStar illustrates
the continual advancement of the state of packaging
design and technology and creates a living standard of
international packaging excellence from which others
may learn. WorldStars are presented only to those packs
which, having already won recognition in a national or
regional competitions, are compared by an expert panel
of judges to similar packs from around the world. Awards
are based on the judges’ consensus that a pack is superior
in its category and market and better in its class in execution or innovation by comparison to others. Since 1970,
the World Packaging Organisation has given awards to
numerous new packs from all around the world.
The vision of the World Packaging Organisation
is“Better quality of life, through better packaging for
more people”. This vision focuses on packaging as vital to
the success of products and services, industry and trade,
and society as a whole. By stimulating packaging science
and development and contributing to the further development of the international packaging trade the World
Packaging Organization has over the years developed
into a truly global organization.

WORLD PACKAGING DAYS 2012
Welcome to World
Ladies and gentlemen,
Welcome to World Packaging Days 2012, organised in cooperation
with the World Packaging Organisation. We have set the event in the
beautiful sorroundings of the Adriatic Sea and ancient monuments
of Split town, wrapping it up with a traditionally warm Croatian and
Mediterranean welcome to make you feel comfortable as our guests
and business partners, hoping you will enjoy all what is ahead of you.
By accepting the challenge to organize the World Packaging Days
2012, we accepted great responsabilities and numerous organizational obligations which such a demanding and important event brings
along, but also a great sense of pride that in these hard times of crisis we got the opportunity to be hosts of packaging producers and
users as well as numerous related professionals within the domestic,
regional and global packaging industry.
Drena Milijević,
This year’s World Packaging Days have an exceptionally rich conManaging
Director
tent, with the main aim to deal with the changing needs of desiInstitute of Packaging and
gners, marketing professionals and the packaging industry on a
Graphic Arts - IAT, Croatia
global level, focusing especially on sustainability and environment
protection. These issues are more important now than ever, when the economic changes are almost impossible to predict mostly because of the impact of the global crisis, which hasn’t failed to affect the packaging
users, producers and all related professionals. All levels of packaging production and packaging distribution,
which are an inseparable part of the product itself, are under increasing demands for greater efficiency, but
with respect to every day more strict regulations, safety standards, as well as standards of consumers and
environment protection. The packaging industry must respond to these demands in all parts of the World,
coping with the various differences and specific requirements.
The World Packaging Congress “Packaging and Sustainability” will feature eminent speakers who will use
their experience and expertise to offer meaningful insights and practical advice concerning development,
design, production and use of packaging, all focused on sustainability. Although each lecture offers an important value, the main strenght of the Congress lies in the opportunity of creating a general overview of
packaging and packaging related processes on a global level.
The regional Round Table with the topic “Packaging and Packaging Waste Management – Legal Framework”
will give answers to questions about the terms of packaged products placement on markets of six regional
countries, defined by law regulations, with the goal of all-encompassing environment protection.
The CROPAK 2012 and REGPAK 2012 Awards Ceremony will distinguish and reward the persistent efforts and
results of packaging users, producers and designers who take part in the creation and comprehensive realization of packaging. Their educational efforts and responsability in the field of environment protection are
especially noteworthy, as well as the work synergy of professional design, socially responsible companies and
educational institutions in Croatia, which was rewarded through the Student Creative Workshop 2012, whose
results we will present proudly.
The culmination of the entire event, of course, will be the WorldStar Awards Ceremony and Gala Dinner,
where the representatives of the crème de la crème from the global packaging level will be awarded. We would like to congratulate all the winners, passing on a message for them to continue their the development of
packaging, following the highest standards of packaging profession and sustainability.
Last but not least, in a more relaxed atmosphere during the excursion for all participants on June 7th, we
will present you some of the most known sceneries of our country, hoping that the places you visit will remain
as treasured memories which you will carry back to your countries and your homes and a great motivation to
visit us again, wether during a new business visit or a leisure tourist journey. Which ever the purpose of your
next visit will be, you are always more than welcome in Croatia!
With warmest regards,
Drena Milijević

Packaging Days 2012
Ladies and gentlemen,
Thomas L. Schneider,
President
World Packaging Organisation
The current situation in the packaging industry on a global level is
very positive. Packaging has developed over the last 20 or 30 years
from a position of marginality to being a strategic tool in achieving
the safety of a product. Packaging performance along with packaging
cost have become an important item on income statements of most
companies. Consequently, packaging professionals now have the opportunity, through quality education and training, to earn better salaries and achieve more important status in their companies.
During my three-year term as a president of WPO I plan to work with
my colleagues to build on the excellent work of my predecessor Keith
Pearson and to continue creating new initiatives that will benefit the
world packaging community.
One of the main focus points of my work will be identifying packaging education programs and institutes around the world that need
funding or assistance. Professional training in the packaging sector
should be “fit for purpose”, meaning that basic training in North America or Europe might be different from basic training in Ghana or Sri
Lanka.
Another focus point will be creating outreach programs in order
to bring together national and regional packaging organisations for
the common good of the Packaging Community. We will also be focusing on increasing the number of entries in our WorldStar Awards
and WorldStar Student Awards programs and encouraging more WPO
board members to become actively involved in WPO programs/activities. In a general sense we will promote the importance of packaging
as a strategic social, economic, and commercial tool. My message to
the packaging professionals in Croatia and the region is open your
eyes to fresh ideas that are outside your standard frame of reference. Educate yourselves to expect and use the unexpected ideas. Take
time to understand how those new ideas can be applied and then
apply those new ideas to your present circumstance. You will likely
find uncommon success that will be good for you, your company, and
for society.
Best regards,
Thomas L. Schneider

PRESENTATIONS SUMMARIES
Keynote Speech - Global Packaging
Industry - Current Situation and
Perspectives up to 2020
Because packaging impacts the whole of society, the elements that impact
packaging are therefore, broad and inclusive, too. It is difficult to cover all
of them in a short time, so we will talk about a few that may be of interest.
We will briefly discuss material design trends in flexible packaging, energy
conservation related to packaging materials, product protection in the supply chain and technology developments for safer food, especially track and
trace methods. The issue of sustainability will be discussed from a business
perspective.
Thomas L. Schneider, WPO President
Croatian and Regional Packaging
Industry Potential
The presentation will offer a view on macroeconomic environment in the
republic of Croatia. It will present statistical data on production of packaging
in Croatia as well as export and import data for packaging industry in the
country. It will also provide an overview of consumption of packaging in tons
for the period from 2006 to 2011. Finally, the presentation aims to describe
the main challenges packaging industry in Croatia faces by dealing with the
most common business issues encountered by packaging manufacturers.
Enis Kancelir, President of Affiliation of Packaging Industries,
Croatian Chamber of Economy, Croatia
How Packaging Contributes to
Sustainability
Packaging has been seen as a burden for the environment by green NGO’s
and the public. During the past 20 years, the packaging industry has successfully developed packaging by down gauging individual packages and
adaptation of new technologies in order to become more environmentally
efficient. Packaging has been optimized across the delivery chain including
secondary and tertiary packaging. Vast environmental efforts are put into the
production of any product, especially foodstuff. Recent studies have proven
that packaging constitutes only a fraction of the total environmental burden
of any product system. At the same time, packaging preserves the product
and the environment and thus contributes to Sustainability. Packaging also
makes it possible to distribute food to aid famine across the world as the WPO
charter points out.
Roger Bagge, Finnish Packaging Association (WPO Member)
Packaging and Food Safety - Global
Approach
Today, ofi is one of the largest research and testing institutes for packaging
and food safety in Austria and an international accepted member of the
European Packaging Institutes Consortium (EPIC) and the Word Packaging
Organisation (WPO).
Approximately 2/3 of all packaging materials are used for foodstuff. Thus,
packaging materials for food, call for special attention. Especially the interaction between packaging materials and foodstuff is a delicate issue and the
object of many researches.
14
The focus is on the growing and changing requirements in the fields of safety
and design of packaging and materials, as well as related test methods (e.g.
migration). In addition to the survey of the scientific and legislative situation
the need of establishing a WPO working group will be evaluated.
Johannes Bergmair, OFI, Packaging Institute at Austrian Reserch
Institute (WPO Member)
Economical, Social and Ecological
Aspect of Packaging and Chinese Market
Potential
Environmental issues are widely concerned by countries around the world,
packaging industry has its responsibiltiy to contribute to the sustainable development of the world. Different regions and countries may have different
strategies and norms in terms of sustainability, which based on their various
status of development. However, since environmental protection is the common goal of our global society, international standards on packaging and
environment are expected by the industry, and in fact they are already under
developing process now.
In this presentation, I will introduce:
- Background situation of developing International Standards on packaging
and environment;
- why those standards are needed and what were the triggers for developing
them at international level;
- The current working structure and progress of those standards;
- How will those standards impact packaging industry, and specifically the
Chinese market, after they are officially published by ISO (International Organisation for Standardization) in the near future.
Xu Ting, National Export Commodities Packaging Research Institute
- CEPI, China (WPO Member)
Economical, Social and Ecological Aspect
of Packaging and American Market
Potential
The outlook for the packaging industry remains strong. Consumer demands
continue to drive brand owners toward more innovative, user-friendly designs which best fit the American lifestyle. We will discuss a few of these
trends, and explore how packaging suppliers and CPG companies can use
these trends to their advantage
Patrick M. Farrey, Institute of Packaging Professionals, USA (WPO
Member)
Economical, Social and Ecological Aspect
of Packaging and Indian Market Potential
The presentation will cover the following aspects :
- Brief about the Institute.
- India- profile, social and economical
- India-ecological aspects.
- Indian Consumer behaviour.
- India- changing trends & its impact on packaging.
- Packaging Scenario in World & India.
- Role of Packaging & Challenges.

WORLD PACKAGING DAYS 2012
Packaging and Marketing - Global
Approach
What is your market strategy?
The marketing strategy of a brand has to be materialized to consumers through its packaging.
The macro-economic scenario brings a bigger challenge to the FMCG industry
to have winning products in such a competitive market. At the same time, the
global competitiveness puts a huge pressure over costs making it necessary
to explore all the effective tools to add value to the product, call consumers’
attention and overcome the rational decision with emotional values.
In this context, packaging has a huge role for being at the same time intrinsic
of fmcgs, and for having a strong communication power. Knowing how to
explore it is a key factor for marketing people.
But different bullet points have to be taken in to consideration, such as consumer
polarization, their behaviors and demands, demographic and cultural aspects,
society’s new value on sustainability and the impacts of the virtual network.
What are the key points to make your packaging bring to light the benefits of
your products and differentiate it before consumers?
Luciana Pellegrino, Associação Brasileira de Embalagem (ABRE),
(WPO Member)
Packaging Design - Economical, Social
and Ecological Aspects
Sustainable packaging design often fixates on only one dimension of sustainability, generating environmental benefits (and perhaps even more narrowly
on only carbon footprint reductions), while neglecting the other demands of
a package. In a presentation focused on the broader aspects of package design, Dr. Abramowicz will explore how to create an effective and sustainable
solution by addressing all three dimensions of sustainability: environmental,
economic and social dimensions. Using brief case histories representing a
variety of market segments and package formats, Abramowicz will explain
how packaging helps brands reduce their environmental footprint, support
economic success through self-differentiation and value-added features on
the retail shelf, and satisfy the social needs of consumers by accommodating
their changing lifestyles.
Daniel A. Abramowicz, Ph.D., Crown Holdings Inc, USA
Are your designs working hard enough?
As a brand owner or retailer you know that the recognition and perception
of a brand is highly influenced by its visual presentation. Your product packaging must communicate the value of your brand while still fulfilling its
practical role. It is the ultimate form of relationship marketing and you have
invested heavily in designs that maximise shelf impact.
But are your current print production processes allowing you to gain maximum return on that design investment or could your designs be working
harder for you? The good news is that it may not take a major redesign to
significantly improve the shelf impact of your flexographic printed flexible
packaging. The answer lies with choosing a flexographic printing plate that
can give you greater process ink densities and smoother solid areas, without
compromising the reproduction of your design. Listen how Kodak Flexcel NX
Plates use award winning technology to significantly improve the ink transfer
of solvent inks on films, resulting in more vibrant colours, higher contrast and
cleaner print. And when the time does come for a product re-design or a
new product launch, take full advantage of all that the latest in digital plate
technology has to offer. Not only can designers rely on more vibrant print
and whiter whites, they can also achieve more photo-realistic reproduction
and confidently include complex graphic designs with subtle detail, or even
consider brand new elements in the design. Kodak’s plate technology enables
designs to be produced with fewer spot colours, allowing greater flexibility
and significant reduction in manufacturing costs.
David Croft, Kodak Graphic Communications Group, Belgium
Plastic Packaging and Sustainability Global Approach
SABIC is engaged in sustainability as a key element in our growth mission.
During the development of new Polyolefin products for packaging applications, SABIC focuses continuously on sustainability by concentrating on down
gauging, recycling & consumer health.
The SABIC presentation on World Packaging Congress in 2012 shows practical
SABIC value offers in the field of food and non-food packaging with a clear
link to the reduction of the environmental footprint in the value chain involved. Recent developments are presented in the area of recycled HDPE dairy
bottles, thinner polyolefin packaging films and ultra-light weight foams.
Gert Coun, SABIC, The Netherlands
Glass Packaging and Sustainability Global Approach
Vetropack Group is committed to the three-pillar model of sustainability:
economical, social and ecological responsibility. To this end, better energy
efficiency, lighter and more robust glass packaging forms the foundation of
our model.
Energy consumption for melting will be drastically reduced by a new technology of preheating raw materials and cullet. In Vetropack’s Straza plant in
Croatia an initial pilot unit operated successfully.
A revolutionary glass packaging tempering process results in further weight
reduction and a significant increase in breakage resistance. In late 2012, a
pilot tempering line will be installed in Vetropack’s Pöchlarn plant in Austria.
Both technologies outlined here are investments in the future through which
everyone will benefit – manufacturers, the food and beverage industry and
consumers.
Günter Lubitz, Vetropack Group, Switzerland
Flexible Packaging and Sustainability Global Approach
How can flexible packaging contribute to reduce the growing waste of food
products. It is estimated that 179kg food is wasted per capita per year in the
EU. A significant part of this is because the packaging is not optimised for
the consumption pattern of the consumer, or because it is not technically
optimised for the packed products. I will present examples on how flexible
packaging can be used in an optimised way. In particular I will focus on a
novel technique for extending shelf life of fresh cut produce.
Atle Flom, Kobusch, Germany
Infraredesign® - Protection of Product
Originality in Flexible Packaging
INFRAREDESIGN® is an invention unique in the world, patent awarded with
over 30 prizes from US, across Europe to Taiwan. It is invention that enables
creating double image in the same picture: one visible in daylight and other
independent hidden image visible in near infrared light. INFRAREDESIGN®
provides superior brand protection with easy identification of security, enriches design and provides added value to the packaging and the final product.
One of the most important advantages is simple application in printing process using standard inks, standard printing techniques, standard printing surfaces. It can be easily detected and validated using any camera with infrared
source, by infrared cameras or security cameras and also by standard bar
code readers.

Advanced Plastic Technology Discovering the Goodness of Plastic
There is mounting public concern about the longevity of plastic which gets
into the rivers, oceans and landscape and cannot realistically be collected for
disposal.
Symphony Environmental is a specialist in Oxo-biodegradable plastics, which
degrade in the open environment by a process of oxidation. The d2w additive
included at manufacture turns ordinary plastic at the end of its useful life in
the presence of oxygen into a material with a different molecular structure.
At that stage it is no longer a plastic and has become a material which is
inherently biodegradable in the open environment in the same way as a leaf.
A report published by the UK Environment Agency in 2011 showed that oxobiodegradable bags have a better LCA than paper or compostable plastic, and
better than cotton bags unless the latter are re-used very many times.
Symphony’s d2w Oxo-biodegradable additive will cause most plastics made
from PE, PP or PS to degrade after their useful life in a pre-set approximate time span from as little as six months onwards, leaving no fragments or
harmful residues. Because degradation is automatic in the presence of air,
the plastic will degrade even if discarded as litter, and it will not emit methane even when buried in a landfill. Plastic made with d2w is also recyclable
in a normal waste stream - see http://www.biodeg.org/position-papers/
recycling/?domain=biodeg.org
Over the last decade consumers, NGOs and Governments have been highly
critical of the plastics industry because its products will lie or float around for
decades if they get into the open environment, and it has now been made
compulsory in the Middle East to use oxo-biodegradable plastic. The time is
now for the industry worldwide to protect itself by using d2w. For a video of
plastic film degrading, visit: http://degradable.net/play-videos/4
Symphony has also introduced a new product called d2p, to protect human
health. This is a suite of additives which give plastic products anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Its applications are enormous, for example
food packaging, computer keyboards, telephones, door handles, toilet seats,
etc. 2010 was also the year in which Symphony launched the d2Detector
- a portable xrf machine that checks the true content of plastic packaging
and can also be used to detect the presence of counterfeit goods. Symphony
also has tracing and tagging technologies to protect almost anything against
counterfeiting.

Xerox Automated Packaging Solution A New Way of Thinking
Xerox Automated Packaging Solution Powered by Stora Enso is a joint
venture between a number of leading vendors. This allows a customer
to deliver short run full color automated packaging solutions. The in-line
process means maximum productivity for packagers. For example, blank
packaging boards are placed in the feeder and finish in the output stacker
completely printed, coated and die cut - ready for folding and gluing. Print
providers can produce customized, variable data on each package cost effectively with minimal operator use. The solution is ideal for retailers looking to test prototype product with a variety of different packaging. It also
helps minimize the impact on the environment by printing on demand to
reduce waste and using packaging board that is renewable and recyclable.

PRO EUROPE s.p.r.l. , Belgium
PRO EUROPE s.p.r.l. (PACKAGING RECOVERY ORGANISATION EUROPE) is
the umbrella organisation for 34 packaging and packaging waste recovery and recycling schemes of which 27 use the “Green Dot” trademark
as a financing symbol; 33 are seated in 33 European countries and 1
member is seated in Canada. PRO EUROPE acts as the authoritative voice
and common policy platform representing the interests of their members; moreover PRO EUROPE organises the exchange of best practices
especially with regard to the collection, sorting and recycling of household packaging.
These national recovery organisations are pursuing similar goals, essentially finding themselves and their stakeholders in a similar situation.
They have set themselves the task of relieving industrial companies and
commercial enterprises of their individ-ual obligation to take back used
sales packaging through the operation of a scheme which fulfils these
obligations on a nation-wide basis on behalf of their member com-panies. The aim is to ensure the recovery and recycling of packaging waste
in the most economically efficient and ecologically sound manner. Apart
from requiring the co-ordination and alignment of individual member
positions, the task of safeguarding common interests involves the projection of a coherent, unified policy and image to the outside world.
24
The “Green Dot” has evolved into a proven concept in many countries as
implemen-tation of Producer Responsibility. Industry in twenty–seven
nations is now using the “Green Dot” as the financing symbol for the organisation of recovery, sorting and re-cycling of sales packaging. Private-sector compliance schemes working toward this objective are today
in place in twenty-two EU member states, viz., Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary,
Ire-land, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden as well as additional countries include Norway (as an EEA member), Croatia, Macedonia, Serbia and
Turkey. Moreover, systems from the UK (VALPAK), Italy (CONAI), Finland
(PYR), Netherlands (NEDVANG), Iceland (IRF), Ukraine (UkrPec) and Canada (Stewardedge) complete the membership within PRO EUROPE.
The members of PRO EUROPE wish to demonstrate that the recycling of
used pack-aging is an important step on the path towards the sustainable development that is necessary to safeguard our planet for future
generations. Their work in Europe and world-wide is both successful and
transparent.
Incorporated as a private limited liability company under Belgian law
(société privée à responsabilité limitée, s.p.r.l.), PRO EUROPE is headquartered in 1200 Brussels, Rue Martin V 40. The Managing Director is Joachim Quoden and the President Luis Veiga Martins from the Portugal
