As we end one fiscal year and start another one, we do
so with great anticipation. It is exciting to look back at
last year’s accomplishments, always dreaming of
reaching even loftier heights during the New Year.
Being the second-largest children’s wish-granting
organization in the United States is not something we
take lightly. We feel a great responsibility to our dream
kids and families, our donors, and our members to
follow our core values established in our founding year,
1980. We continue to maintain an all-volunteer
membership. This grass-roots approach consistently
allows The Dream Factory to dedicate over 80% of our
funding directly to our mission of granting dreams.
In 2012, 90% of our total funding was used for this
purpose. We pride ourselves in being fiscally responsible in all of our decisions, and in keeping the needs of
our dream children front and center in all we do.
Last year our organization, made up of 38 chapters
throughout the United States, granted the dreams of 242
critically and chronically ill children. Thanks to the very
generous efforts of the Missouri State Charter of the
Fraternal Order of Eagles, 29 dreams were sponsored.
Additionally, Something mAAgic Foundation, a
volunteer arm of American Airlines, in collaboration
with Give Kids the World Village, sponsored Central
Florida dreams for 14 of our children and their families.
The financial assistance of all three of these
organizations was significant. However, any of their
members would tell you they received much more in
return when they were able to speak to some of these
children and realize that the value of a dream is so
much more than the actual price.
In 2012, a Long Range Planning Committee was
established to set goals and objectives for the next three
years to address the growing needs for additional marketing strategies and resources, national sponsorships,
increased organizational effectiveness and
increasing our presence in the digital and social media
world. Many goals have already been met with anticipation of several others being met within the next year.
A brief summary of these accomplishments and near
future accomplishments are listed in this Annual Report.
Additionally, The Dream Factory was offered the
opportunity to be a part of the Giving Library (giving
library.org ). Through in-depth video interviews,
philanthropists have an opportunity to explore and
compare hundreds of non-profits and connect with
charitable organizations on their own terms.
We are also very proud of the fact that
The Dream Factory has been awarded a 4-star rating
with Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent
charity evaluator. We are working very hard to continue
the growth that is necessary to maintain this rating in
future years.
What will next year bring? We know it will bring
more sick children - these terrible illnesses just don’t
quit. But, it will also bring more volunteers, more
donors, and more of the joy and excitement of seeing
dreams come true. Please join us at whatever level you
can as we continue to put smiles on the faces of these
precious children.
Respectfully submitted,
Janice Harris, President

M i sso u r i state fraternal order
of t h e ea g les g rants 2 9 dreams !
When Missouri State Fraternal Order of the Eagles
Presidents Tim Marler and Leslie Franklin chose
The Dream Factory as the state charity for the
2011-2012 fraternal year, their dream was to put smiles
on the faces of 20 Missouri children who were critically
or chronically ill.
Because of the generosity and hard work of Eagles
across the state that included golf tournaments,
auctions, raffles, travel shops and donations,
Missouri Eagles were able to raise over $131,000 and
grant 29 dreams!
These dreams included trips to New York City;
Chicago; Yellowstone; the Bahamas; Washington, D.C.
and Central Florida to visit Disney World; cruises;
shopping sprees; and participating in baseball
spring training.
In the end, it does not really matter what dream
the child chose. The Eagles volunteers will always
remember touching the lives of 29 children and their
families -- providing a reprieve from their daily medical
problems and giving memories that will last a lifetime.
The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an organization
that lives its motto of “People Helping People.”

Long-time KMBC News Anchor Larry Moore -- also
known as “Mr. Kansas City” -- has been a volunteer for
the Greater Kansas City chapter for 28 years.
He helped co-found the chapter in 1984 and has been a
major supporter ever since.
Larry was instrumental in developing a
Dream Factory partnership with the Kansas City Royals
and Chiefs. Each week, the Royals baseball and Chiefs
football teams invite a Dream Factory family to come
see a home game. The families receive VIP treatment,
spending the night before the game at a local hotel,
traveling to the game in a limo and meeting with Larry
at the game to conduct an interview that is aired on the
10 pm news. The family also personally meets with the
players of the teams.
Larry also routinely spotlights Dream Factory
children and fundraising events during his evening
broadcasts. The visibility Larry Moore has brought to
The Dream Factory of Greater Kansas City has been
a key factor to the chapter’s success, which routinely
raises over $400,000 annually to grant dreams to
seriously ill children in the Greater Kansas City area.
Additionally, The Larry Moore Scholarship grants
three $5,000 scholarships per year to past dream
recipients.

Larry’s significant contributions to The Dream Factory
have been acknowledged over the years with several
awards. Most recently, he received the Lifetime
Achievement Award from The Dream Factory.
Larry says his passion for The Dream Factory and
the children we serve is a “labor of love”. Of all his
achievements and journalism awards received during his
career, Larry is “most proud” of the work he has done for
The Dream Factory. Since its founding, the chapter has
granted over 5,500 dreams. He says, “Dreams coming
true have changed lives for the good and today a number
of past recipients are now doctors, nurses, executives,
business owners, lawyers and physical therapists.”
Next year, there will be more dreams to fulfill and
we know Larry will continue to do his best to make
dreams come true.

Attention all runners! In an attempt to raise funds and awareness,
The Dream Factory Marathon Team and Dream Factory Racing Team
were formed! Racers participate in one of hundreds of races around the
country representing The Dream Factory and not only achieve a
personal goal of reaching the finish line but also join a team that runs
to help change the life of a sick child!
In the summer of 2011, a long range planning committee was formed to make strategic recommendations to the Board
of Directors that would guide our organization over the next three years. The plan was approved by the Board in
September 2012. Five major goals were identified. The objectives achieved in 2012 and anticipated results in 2013
are as follows:
I.
Maintain financial stability by growing gross revenues and program services by at least 5% each year through an integrated, diverse resource development program.
1. Create generic “benefit” speech (2012)
2. Establish a collective and comprehensive database of all the existing corporate sponsorships each chapter
currently receives (2012)
3. Conduct comprehensive grant research for all chapters (2013)
4. Develop training manual and generic grant writing form for chapter use (2013)
5. Conduct semi-annual mailing appeal. Evaluate effectiveness of purchasing and utilizing donor lists (2013)
6. Develop annual signature fundraiser on national basis for all chapters (2013)
II.Grow and maintain effective marketing and public relations programs, building long-lasting alliances within the healthcare and business communities in which we serve.
1. Achieve four-star rating in 2012 and maintain thereafter (2012)
2. Design, produce and distribute a new six-minute National/Chapter DVD for use in fundraising efforts (2012)
3. Create a core marketing presentation tailored to individual and corporate donors including DVD’s, slide
presentations, Power Point presentations and PSA’s (2013)
4. Develop and conduct a chapter survey to determine current use at health fairs and conferences to solicit
referrals (2013)
5. Assemble and distribute promotional packets for use at doctors’ offices, health fairs and conferences (2013)
III. Maintain an efficient and dedicated human resource all-volunteer base to enable and drive the
corporation’s mission and strategic plan.
1. Conduct succession plan review of key National and chapter positions (2012)
a. Succession plan is in place for key National positions
b. Determine succession plan for smaller chapters (2013)
2. Develop and conduct a chapter survey to determine best methods for volunteer recognition (2013)
IV. Maintain and efficiently utilize information technology enablers.
1. Solicit input for web site redesign (2012)
2. Analyze and project the resources and support required to effectively manage a new
information technology platform and future long-range needs (2012)
3. Design and implement improvements to current national website (2013)
4. Design and implement improvements to current chapter websites (2013)
5. Develop and conduct a chapter survey to determine current use of social media (2013)
V. Maintain a high level of organizational effectiveness.
1. Specify and communicate individual chapter compliance criteria (2013)
2. Identify chapters with negative or minimal growth and analyze for cause (2013)
3. Set up budget per previous years’ performance, not straight-line
calendarization (2013)
