HOSA Welcomes
Special Guests
The Acting Deputy
Surgeon General
Rear Admiral Robert C.
Williams, P.E., DEE
“Go confidently in the
direction of your dreams, live
the life you have imagined.”
By Henry David Thoreau
Since October of 2007, RADM Bob Williams has served as the
Acting Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, serving as the
principal assistant and advisor to the Surgeon General regarding
the development and implementation of programs, priorities, and
initiatives. As Deputy Surgeon General, RADM Williams maintains
effective relationships and collaborations with executive leadership
within the federal government and serves as Chief Executive Officer
of the 6,000-plus members of the USPHS Commissioned Corps. Prior
to assuming the duties as Acting Deputy Surgeon General, RADM
Williams served as the Chief of Staff, Office of the Surgeon General,
since 2003. As Chief of Staff, he provided direction and oversight
to 110 personnel constituting six offices (Commissioned Corps
Operations, Force Readiness and Deployment, Civilian Volunteer
Medical Reserve Corps, Reserve Affairs, Military Liaison and Veteran
Affairs, and Science and Communications) and advice and council to
the Surgeon General.
RADM Williams is a friend of HOSA’s as he spoke at the joint meeting
of the State Advisors and State Presidents attending the Washington
Leadership Academy at the White House Briefing in Washington, D.C,
in September, 2008. At that very special meeting, RADM Williams
commended HOSA for having many of the same priorities of the
Surgeon General – disease prevention, public health preparedness,
eliminating health disparities and health literacy. He shared, “To me,
the value of HOSA is it provides a framework to bring your passions to
life through leadership development, motivation and recognition of
your individual value to the future of health care and public health.”
RADM Williams understands the necessity of HOSA and its members
as an integral part to the future of the health care and the public
health workforce. He knows that the future of health care begins
with each member of HOSA – working together as we move from a
treatment-based society to a prevention-focused society. “You only
have to have the desire and the belief that you can make a difference,
and then do it! The success of health care in this nation begins with
those who have the courage to make a difference …. and, I believe
these are the qualities in each member of HOSA.”

Corporate Leader Award
HCA
Hospital Corporation of America
HCA, the nation’s leading provider of healthcare,
has 185,000 affiliated employees located in 166
hospitals and 112 outpatient centers in 20 states
and England.
HCA’s commitment to a healthy work environment
encompasses an unwavering focus on five key
areas – culture, leadership, voice, rewards and
staffing. This unique healthcare provider knows
that if they do well in the areas that contribute to
a healthy work environment, that employees will
be able to provide the safest, highest-quality and
most compassionate service to patients and their
families. In short, HCA takes care of the people it
depends on to take care of its patients.
On rare but unforgettable occasions, HCA associates have been called to offer healing and
comfort to communities experiencing crises and
disasters. They have been asked to go “above and
beyond” normal patient care to ensure the care of
human life during times of tragedy.
These rare occasions - when companies do the
right things for their communities and their
employees—are the things that make good
companies great!
The nearly 110,000 future health professionals of
HOSA are honored and privileged to recognize
the magnificent men and women who are part of
a great healthcare provider because HCA Cares
– with a corporate culture that is committed to
“Leaving No One Behind!”
Hurricane Katrina was a defining moment for
HCA and all involved acted above and beyond
what could have been asked of them. Each
person contributed directly or indirectly to the
saving of countless lives. And, after all, this is
ultimately why health providers do what they do
in the midst of crises and disasters, like Katrina,
Columbine, bombing of the federal building in
Oklahoma City, as well as each and every day.

Opening General Session Entertainment
Catherine Raney has always had a passion for singing. Starting at an early age, she decided to pursue
a career in music. This led to the Opry and Festival circuit in Texas and Louisiana. Since 2001, she has
performed at Tim McGraw’s annual Swampstock in Rayville, Louisiana and was an opening act on the
“Live Your Voice” tour in 2008. She has also opened for such artists as The Warren Brothers, Chris
Cagle, Martina McBride, Faith Hill and, of course, Tim McGraw.
Catherine recorded “All The Pretty Little Ponies” that
was featured on the soundtrack for the motion
picture, Flicka. Currently, she is working on her first
album with the help of producers Tim McGraw and
Byron Gallimore.
Performing with Catherine is the famous band, “The Dancehall Doctors”.
The Dancehall Doctors record and tour with the country music legend Tim
McGraw. They are one of the few touring bands in the music industry to
also serve as the studio musicians on Tim’s albums. The band is led by
guitarist Darran Smith and features eight talented musicians. It is indeed a
treat to have Catherine Raney and The Dancehall Doctors join us at this
year’s National Leadership Conference. You will want to arrive early to the

Conference Information
Sleeping Rooms
Competitive Events Orientation and Scheduling
A good reputation enables members to take pride in their
organization. HOSA members have an excellent reputation.
Conduct at any HOSA function, whether it is a general
session or in the cleanliness of a sleeping room, should
make a positive contribution to the reputation that has
been established.
Each student competing is responsible for being prompt to
the Orientation Session for his/her event and for the time
period for which they are scheduled. Read the conference
agenda carefully. You must be on time or risk disqualification. If you are not certain, go to the Competitive Events
Headquarters or locate your chapter or state advisor. It is
the responsibility of competitors to attend the Orientation
Session or make arrangements for someone to attend in
his/her place. HOSA is not responsible for errors in communication between the competitor and his/her designated
representative at the Orientation Session. Due to testing/
preliminary rounds, a proxy is not permitted in several of
the events. Be sure you know the rules or ask questions!
Please check rooms before departure from the hotel to
ensure that they are left in a reasonable condition.
Delegates are responsible for any vandalism and will be
expected to pay any and all damages.
Conference Message Center
A message board is available at all times for any schedule
changes, special announcements, and messages for individuals by state at the Conference Headquarters located
outside the Delta C Reg Desk.
Conference Name Badges
Conference name badges must be worn at all times while
at the Conference. The name badge serves as the entry to
all official conference functions including general sessions,
business session, workshops, and for bus transportation to
competitive event sites. For security purposes, do not wear
the conference badge while touring the city, etc.
For conference activities, wear your name badge in plain
sight to ensure your admittance to conference functions.
Replacement badges are $5 and can be obtained at the
Conference Headquarters with proper identification.
Admission Tickets
Delegates must have tickets to attend the Opening General
Session, Recognition Session, and the Awards Session. Only
registered delegates and guests may attend the General
Sessions and entertainment activities. A name badge must
be visible at all times. Tickets are NOT required for admittance into Educational Symposium workshops and seating
is on a first-come basis. We encourage you to attend each
workshop for which you have an interest.
HOSA Competitive Events Information
Fifty-seven competitive events will be conducted in six
program areas at two levels at the National Leadership
Conference. HOSA competitive events are conducted as
incentives for HSTE students to be recognized for
achievement related to career and leadership development.
Competitive events are designed to complement the health
science technology education programs through application of the instruction received. This practical experience
assists the HOSA member in developing the knowledge,
skills, and attitudes required to deliver quality health care.
28
Competitive Event Judges and Personnel
Competitive event personnel and judges are asked to read
the agenda carefully. It is essential that all personnel be at
the event site in advance of the posted times. It should be
remembered that event judges and personnel are “very
important persons” at the National Leadership Conference.
When opportunities arise, please tell these volunteers how
much we appreciate the contributions they are making to
HOSA and the 2009 NLC
National Officer Campaigning
Verbal campaigning may begin after the national
officer candidate slate is announced by the Nominating
Committee.
Local and State Advisors’ Orientation Meeting
All local and state advisors are encouraged to attend the
orientation meeting on Wednesday from 2:30 – 3:30 PM
in Hermitage CD. All conference chairmen will be present.
Any changes in the program will be given at this time.
This orientation is provided to ensure a smooth-running
competitive events program and conference.
Courtesy Corps & Host Committee
Each state selects students and advisors to serve on the
Conference Courtesy Corps. Members of the Courtesy
Corps and Host Committee will assist in all aspects of
the conference. The success of the National Leadership
Conference is due in large part to the efforts of the Courtesy
Corps. Thanks to all Courtesy Corps members.
Voting Delegates
Each voting delegate will receive a voting delegate ribbon
from his/her state advisor. All voting delegates or alternate
must attend the Voting Delegate Orientation or have a
representative as his/her proxy. Voting Delegates must be
seated in the voting delegate area at least ten minutes prior
to the start of the Business Session on Thursday at 3:00 PM.
Official HOSA uniform must be worn. On Thursday, June
25, the National Executive Council will host a breakfast for
Conference Information
voting delegates and national officer candidates. This will be an
opportunity for the voting delegates to meet the national officer
candidates on an informal basis.
Conference Delegate
Responsibilities
Curfew
All HOSA members are asked to abide by curfew times and not
leave their rooms after the published time in the program book.
• Adhere to the official conference code of
conduct as signed by each delegate.
Conference Insurance
• Wear your official HOSA uniform correctly and
proudly.
Conference insurance has been secured for all conference delegates. Protection can extend up to three days before and three days
after the conference. Coverage begins when the insured delegate
leaves his/her residence, and continues until he or she returns
home (within the three-day extension).
Gaylord Radisson Hotel and Hampton Inn Shuttle
• Be prompt in attending all sessions.
• Stay until the end of each session.
• Always show the utmost respect to the
person(s) at the podium.
HOSA has arranged for there to be a conference shuttle from these
Hotels to the Gaylord Opryland. The shuttle will begin running at
6:30 AM and will pick-up and drop off every thirty minutes until 30
minutes after the last scheduled event.
• Be a mature HOSA representative. Loud
talking, boasting, vulgarity, profanity, and
horseplay are not becoming of a HOSA
member.
Conference Attire
• If you take pictures in any session, respect
those in back of you by “remaining low” before
and after the picture is taken.
Conference delegate attire should be proper and appropriate
since it reflects directly upon the State Association and National
HOSA. Conference delegates are strongly encouraged to wear
HOSA uniforms or appropriate business attire to business sessions,
general sessions and other conference activities. There are many
special guests in the audience and it is to everyone’s advantage to
dress appropriately for all conference functions.
Under no circumstances will blue jeans, shorts, or other casual attire
be accepted at any Conference function (with the exception of
tours, HOSA’s dances, and other recreational activities). Delegates
dressed in such casual attire will not be permitted to participate
in official HOSA conference meetings. The official HOSA uniform
is required of voting delegates and national officers. Please
note the guidelines of individual competitive events for specific
instructions for students competing in certain competitive events.
An official uniform policy for HOSA was approved by the Board of
Directors and is described in Section B of the HOSA Handbook.
• Periodically check the bulletin board near
the Conference Headquarters for messages,
program information, and state delegate
instructions.
• HOSA members are not confined to the hotel,
but they do need advisor and/or chaperone
permission to depart the property.
• It is your responsibility to attend and be
prompt for the activities in which you are
involved.
• Read your program carefully. If you do not
know – ASK!
Attire for Recognition and Award Sessions on Friday and Saturday is as follows:
Females – A “dressy” short or long dress, official HOSA uniform, or
business attire.
Males – Business attire or official HOSA uniform.
Reproduction of Photographs
As a delegate to the National Leadership Conference, permission
is granted to make photographs, videotapes, broadcasts, and/or
sound recordings, separately or in combination, available for
reproduction for educational and promotional purposes by
National HOSA unless you put in writing this exception.

Let’s Fight Flu Together! is a program of Flu Busters, National PTA and the National Association of
Elementary School Principals (NAESP) that began in July 2008. The program provides information,
resources and support for onsite influenza (flu) vaccinations at schools and community-based organizations. HOSA is a supporting organization of this health initiative.
Your HOSA chapter now has the information, resources and support to host a flu vaccination clinic at
your school or in another community setting. By scheduling a Let’s Fight Flu Together! clinic, you can help
prevent the spread of influenza in your community.
The Statistics Are Important:
- Children are attacked more frequently and are a major source of flu transmission than any other age
group
- In an average year, students miss approximately 38 million days of school due to influenza and parents
missed more than 10 million work days to care for these children: 83 children died from influenzarelated diseases; of this number, 58 were children who had not received a flu vaccine as recommended
by the CDC
Using the information available on the /Let’s Fight Flu Together!/ website (www.pta.org/flushotclinics),
you have everything needed to plan, schedule, promote and host a flu vaccination clinic. Once you have
selected a time and date, and obtained the approval of school officials, a Flu Busters representative will
work with you on scheduling.
Help PTA reach its goal of vaccinating 1 million people this flu season! Get started now by visiting
our website www.pta.org/flushotclinics or calling toll free 1(866) 782-3014.
