Williams, P.E., DEE “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you have imagined.” By Henry David Thoreau Since October of 2007, RADM Bob Williams has served as the Acting Deputy Surgeon General of the United States, serving as the principal assistant and advisor to the Surgeon General regarding the development and implementation of programs, priorities, and initiatives. As Deputy Surgeon General, RADM Williams maintains effective relationships and collaborations with executive leadership within the federal government and serves as Chief Executive Officer of the 6,000-plus members of the USPHS Commissioned Corps. Prior to assuming the duties as Acting Deputy Surgeon General, RADM Williams served as the Chief of Staff, Office of the Surgeon General, since 2003. As Chief of Staff, he provided direction and oversight to 110 personnel constituting six offices (Commissioned Corps Operations, Force Readiness and Deployment, Civilian Volunteer Medical Reserve Corps, Reserve Affairs, Military Liaison and Veteran Affairs, and Science and Communications) and advice and council to the Surgeon General. RADM Williams is a friend of HOSA’s as he spoke at the joint meeting of the State Advisors and State Presidents attending the Washington Leadership Academy at the White House Briefing in Washington, D.C, in September, 2008. At that very special meeting, RADM Williams commended HOSA for having many of the same priorities of the Surgeon General – disease prevention, public health preparedness, eliminating health disparities and health literacy. He shared, “To me, the value of HOSA is it provides a framework to bring your passions to life through leadership development, motivation and recognition of your individual value to the future of health care and public health.” RADM Williams understands the necessity of HOSA and its members as an integral part to the future of the health care and the public health workforce. He knows that the future of health care begins with each member of HOSA – working together as we move from a treatment-based society to a prevention-focused society. “You only have to have the desire and the belief that you can make a difference, and then do it! The success of health care in this nation begins with those who have the courage to make a difference …. and, I believe these are the qualities in each member of HOSA.” 16 The Honorable Tim Webb Commissioner of Education Commissioner Webb joined the Tennessee Department of Education in 2003. Before his appointment as commissioner in July 2008 by Governor Phil Bredesen, he served as deputy commissioner, overseeing the daily operations of all divisions of the department. HCA’s commitment to a healthy work environment encompasses an unwavering focus on five key areas – culture, leadership, voice, rewards and staffing. This unique healthcare provider knows that if they do well in the areas that contribute to a healthy work environment, that employees will be able to provide the safest, highest-quality and most compassionate service to patients and their families. In short, HCA takes care of the people it depends on to take care of its patients. On rare but unforgettable occasions, HCA associates have been called to offer healing and comfort to communities experiencing crises and disasters. They have been asked to go “above and beyond” normal patient care to ensure the care of human life during times of tragedy. These rare occasions - when companies do the right things for their communities and their employees—are the things that make good companies great! The nearly 110,000 future health professionals of HOSA are honored and privileged to recognize the magnificent men and women who are part of a great healthcare provider because HCA Cares – with a corporate culture that is committed to “Leaving No One Behind!” Hurricane Katrina was a defining moment for HCA and all involved acted above and beyond what could have been asked of them. Each person contributed directly or indirectly to the saving of countless lives. And, after all, this is ultimately why health providers do what they do in the midst of crises and disasters, like Katrina, Columbine, bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, as well as each and every day. John Steele Senior Vice President Human Resources HOSA members are proud to prepare themselves to be future health professionals when they witness a remarkable commitment of a healthcare provider to its patients and employees to ensure their safety regardless of the cost involved! She has also opened for such artists as The Warren Brothers, Chris Cagle, Martina McBride, Faith Hill and, of course, Tim McGraw. Catherine recorded “All The Pretty Little Ponies” that was featured on the soundtrack for the motion picture, Flicka. Currently, she is working on her first album with the help of producers Tim McGraw and Byron Gallimore. Performing with Catherine is the famous band, “The Dancehall Doctors”. The Dancehall Doctors record and tour with the country music legend Tim McGraw. They are one of the few touring bands in the music industry to also serve as the studio musicians on Tim’s albums. The program provides information, resources and support for onsite influenza (flu) vaccinations at schools and community-based organizations. HOSA is a supporting organization of this health initiative. Your HOSA chapter now has the information, resources and support to host a flu vaccination clinic at your school or in another community setting. By scheduling a Let’s Fight Flu Together! clinic, you can help prevent the spread of influenza in your community. The Statistics Are Important: - Children are attacked more frequently and are a major source of flu transmission than any other age group - In an average year, students miss approximately 38 million days of school due to influenza and parents missed more than 10 million work days to care for these children: 83 children died from influenzarelated diseases; of this number, 58 were children who had not received a flu vaccine as recommended by the CDC Using the information available on the /Let’s Fight Flu Together!/ website (www.pta.org/flushotclinics), you have everything needed to plan, schedule, promote and host a flu vaccination clinic. Once you have selected a time and date, and obtained the approval of school officials, a Flu Busters representative will work with you on scheduling. Help PTA reach its goal of vaccinating 1 million people this flu season! Get started now by visiting our website www.pta.org/flushotclinics or calling toll free 1(866) 782-3014.
