833 Metro Drive, Lebanon, PA 17042 Monday, September 13, 2010 marked the Lebanon
County Career and Technology Center’s annual Parents’
Night. This event provided an opportunity for parents or
guardians of current students enrolled in the CTC to meet
with instructors, counselors, and administrators to discuss
school procedures, curriculum, grading, employment
opportunities, availability of earning college credits, and
opportunities for further training.
A representative from PHEAA provided a seminar on
financial aid to interested parents and guardians. In
addition, over 20 postsecondary institutions had displays in
the cafetorium. Parents and guardians had the opportunity
to register for access to the Parent Portal, which will provide
them with access to their child’s grades, attendance records,
and schedule information.
Parents and students could also purchase and order their
CTC spirit wear.

Six-thousand HOSA members and guests. Forty-seven
event areas in which a HOSA member could compete.
Exciting general sessions complete with inspirational
speakers and laser shows. Educational and social learning
activities. Exhibits presented by professional healthcare
associations. An opportunity to meet people from across the
continental United States, Alaska and Puerto Rico with
similar career goals. Six exciting days in Disney World in
sunny Orlando, Florida.
All of this is what greeted the five HOSA members from
the Health Careers Technology program and the Allied
Health Science program as they participated in the annual
National HOSA Leadership Conference held June 22-27.
Receiving medals at the Pennsylvania HOSA State
Leadership Conference earned them the honor of competing
with the “Best of the Best” from across the nation. With the
greatest number of competitors in the history of the HOSA
organization, our five competitors knew they would be facing
very tough competition. Our delegation celebrated with
Ashley Beare and Alexis Brown, both recent Cedar Crest

Annville, spending countless hours on researching material,
creating an eye appealing display board, collaborating with
students in the Commercial Art and Design program at the
CTC and their instructor Wayne Hagy, writing and rewriting
their speech and practicing their speech with great stage
presence earned them the medal. Ashley echoed the
feelings of Alexis when she said, “We were up against 72
other teams. We knew that we had done all that we could
prior to and on the day of our actual presentation. Some of
the display boards were awesome and we thought that we
didn’t stand a chance of placing. This just goes to show you
that dreams can and do come true!”
Local Advisors Joann Biever, Health Careers Technology,
and Janet Nelson, Allied Health Science, accompanied the
students. Additionally, Mrs. Biever served as Event Manager
for the event of Home Health Aide and Mrs. Nelson served
on the National Competitive Events Management Team as
the Chairperson for all the Health Science and Recognition
Events.
The mission of HOSA is to enhance the delivery of
compassionate, quality health care by providing opportunities
for knowledge, skill and leadership development.
This Conference truly provided our five local
HOSA members all of these opportunities as they
experienced all that HOSA has to offer.
The CTC held its 2nd annual volleyball
tournament in September. There were three
divisions: AM, PM, and Full Day. The programs
in each division played against each other in a

On September 22, 2010, the students of the
Culinary and Pastry Arts program took a class
trip to Sycamore Spring Orchard & Farm
Market. The Orchard is a family owned and
operated business of the Hess Family for four
generations. The Orchard is currently owned
by Bob and Shirley Hess.
The orchard grows many varieties of
vegetables and fruits including eleven varieties
of apples; black raspberries, sweet and sour
cherries and pumpkins. In addition, the
business features hayrides for visitors to tour
the orchard. A tour guide explains the apple
business as well as some history of the
orchard. They also give a tour at the market of
the polishing and sorting machines. If weather
permits, you can enjoy a wagon ride and sit
around a campfire and enjoy a doggie/
marshmallow roast for a minimal charge.
The students took a tour, picked their own
apples and visited the market and bakery shop.
The bake shop features pies, cakes and
cookies. They also sell soups, Wisconsin
cheese, maple syrup, jams and jellies, as well
as a variety of fresh farm items. Many students
purchased their specialty item—apple
dumplings, some even had
seconds.
The educational trip was
inexpensive and worthwhile. The
class recommends Sycamore
Spring Orchard for families to
enjoy some time together and pick
apples. All agreed it was a
wonderful experience.
Commercial Art
The theme for the van was Laurel and
Hardy. They were the most popular comedies in the 1920’s. The first film they did
together was “The Lucky Dog.” After that
they became the great comedian team
that they are known for to this day.
Here’s the other side of the van. On
the left there are goblins and a clown.
In the middle there is a broken heart,
and on the right there is another clown
and a pumpkin.
Here’s the back with bats and skulls.
Here’s the one side of the van. On the
left there is Laurel and Hardy of course,
a Werewolf, Frankenstein, and the
Mummy. In the middle, there are tombstones and on the right there are skulls.
Here’s the front with Happy Halloween
and pumpkins.
